This series is a regular on PBS in NYC. Having moved to another state, I was extremely disappointed that it is not on our PBS cable channel. This is a wonderful, wonderful series that incorporates classical dance into lovely storylines. What I liked best was that the dancers are both female and male, thus appealing to boys and girls. It is filmed live on a set (no audience) and the music is classical. The sets are basic, but the characters use their imaginations and colorful props to play out a storyline. If I remember correctly, there is a narrator and the characters do not speak. My son watched this until age two. It was the only t.v. he was allowed to watch. I am so thrilled to find this on dvd as it is not played on PBS (to my knowledge) outside the New York metropolitan area.

First of all, I am as big of a MJ supporter as you can get...I have website, and promotion to show that he innocent...however..that can't take away from the fact that THIS SUCKED!
First of all....why the hell did he put a CBS special on a DVD? I mean....leave it on TV, the special wasn't that good in the first place. It didn't show my favorite MJ material, that were number ones...including : We Are The World, Remember The Time, In The Closet, You Are Not Alone, Earth Song, and You Rock My World.!
Only 39 minutes!? How ridiculous.

James Brown: Live in Montreux (2005) Review

James Brown: Live in Montreux (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Here is the best James Brown concert available, not for the repertoire, which has no songs (save for two non-listed interjections) not found on the many other DVD/VHS JB offers, and in fact does not contain "bonus tracks" *or* the listed "Hustle (Dead On It)" - the 1975 Disco-Soul semi-hit I'm sure was a major selling point for buyers. If it's here then it's possibly in the form of a very familiar sequeway - maybe a few notes from the tune validate its' listing.
What makes this item standout is the fine technical direction, lighting, sound, and more significantly, the chance to watch a great artist, obviously up for the occasion and in great voice. On "Please, Please, Please" he jumps into the audience (noticeably short on lady fans for some reason) and gets down deep on the classic that put him on the road.
There is some consolation for fans here in that "It's A Man's...World" incorporates "Lost Someone" and "Fever" - the only segment which collectors can really enthuse over.
This is an excellent companion to the '79 Comeback show ("The Lost James Brown Tapes" aka "Bodyheat") and the '83 show with B. B. King at the Beverly Theatre in L.A., which are better musically but do not have the production values of this '81 event.

"Soul Brother No.1", "The Godfather Of Soul", "Mr Dynamite" are all titles that have been applied to James Brown over the years. A hugely influential figure in black American music, he was a driving force in the development of soul music in the early sixties and funk in the early seventies. He has had more R&B hits in the US than any other artist, and has charted singles in countries around the world. One of the defining elements of James Brown’s career has always been his electrifying live show and his performances at Montreux give ample evidence of this. This DVD focuses on his choice as the best of them all from 1981. It’s a string of hits from start to finish delivered with all the flamboyant style and showmanship for which he is rightly famous.Tracklisting: 1) Payback 2) It’s Too Funky In Here 3) Gonna Have A Funky Good Time 4) Try Me 5) Get On The Good Foot 6) It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World 7) Prisoner Of Love 8) I Got The Feelin’ 9) Hustle (Dead On It) 10) Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag 11) I Got You (I Feel Good) 12) Please, Please, Please 13) Jam 14) Sex Machine

I Got the Feelin': James Brown in the 60's (2008) Review

I Got the Feelin': James Brown in the 60's (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
May I respectfully say, "James Brown Live At Chastain Park", take a rest.
Here we have two transcendant excursions into Soul Music history, 1968 concerts made within about two weeks of each other, one at the Apollo, the other at the Boston Gardens, and whether or not the proverbial floodgates will be opened, at this point it doesn't matter. The concerts are amazing: Soul Brother Number One at the very top of his form, a singing, dancing, band-directing, audience mesmerizing phenomenon. His renditions of the ballads "Try Me", "Bewildered", the gospel-jazz expositions like "Get It Together", "There Was A Time", and "Cold Sweat" are of course the best out now on DVD.
The earlier TV Special called "Man To Man" appears to be the final TV cut, no extras. The video quality is not what it should be for an artist of his stature, though let's remember that it was done on videotape by Metromedia in New York, not by a network. The viewer should not be upset with some of the trendy kaleidoscope effects, and some hard edits.
We have the much-discussed, much-requested concert from Boston, telecast one day after the assassination of Doctor Martin Luther King. The atmosphere is naturally tense, involves Mayor Kevin White, who delivers a powerful speech.
As ticketholders were offered a refund so as to stay at home and watch the taping, the audience is comparatively sparse. Yet the consummate showman is still able to elicit audible screams on his passionate, intense, sometimes whispered, sometimes belted "It's Man's, Man's, Man's World". He's also able to excite those patrons...the initiated already know the story of those who rushed the stage on a night that all were asked to remember Doctor King and enjoy James Brown in Peace. It was on outpouring of Love but the camera lens can distort. And Brown knew it.
There are two songs live from the Olympia, 1966 and 1967, though the jacket says 1968 and 1967. The latter was totally unexpected by this Brownologist: the Live At The Apollo, Volume Two arrangemet of "It's A Man's....World"! Not gonna give it all up at this juncture - suffice to say, it's way better on this DVD than on the recent, expanded CD reissue.
The Documentary on Disc Three is surely worth an Oscar.
The bits and pieces of that 1968 concert now form into an amazing whole, which the Documentary Producer duly notes was long, long overdue for commercial release. To support his backstory, is the sensuous Marva Whitney, his 1967-1970 Diva (Disc Two should have included some of her performance); and Charles Bobbitt, his Manager, who tells the story of how he became James Brown's Manager - and how he had to watch the turnstiles that night...and the safety of his friend and client.

Katt Williams Pimpadelic (2009) Review

Katt Williams Pimpadelic (2009)
Average Reviews:

For a lot of fans of stand-up comedy when you hear that Katt Williams is coming out with a new DVD you get quite excited. In fact, if you're just a Katt Williams fan and not so big on other comedians the idea of a new Katt Williams video is awesome. But this particular DVD isn't exactly "new" if you've seen a lot of Katt Williams's material. In fact the footage is much older then some of his previous entries. The material is simply recycled with other footage off the stage.
Don't get me wrong. The material in the video is extremely funny, but if you already have "Katt Williams Live" DVD(which is also on Netflix online streaming) you do not need to pick up this DVD unless you need to own everything Katt Williams. Of course every comedian uses material over again. But the jokes have "all" been heard before(a few slightly altered). Not to mention the crowd from Cincinnati in "Katt Williams Live" is much better then the crowd from Washington DC in this video.
The idea that some guy in the crowd thought a peripheral was a car is funny, not to mention the joke seems improvised. Not this time around.

The very basic packaging tells you that this is a no frills DVD. Many of MJ's best videos are presented and that is all you get. No fancy menu or insert. No live performances, interviews, commercials or still gallery. Nothing. Not even a discography. This doesn't cut it in this day and age of DVD. The videos are great, but this is hardly a difinitive collection. Expecially since all of these (save "You Rock My World") are already available on other discs. And why do video collections keep getting released with shortened or re-edited videos? We want the FULL original video ok! Is that too much to ask?
It's hard to go wrong with an MJ music video and these are all great. But this DVD could have (and should have) been definitie. Instead it's just yet another collection of videos collectors already have.

This was a great documentary of the Classic album "Resonable Doubt. You are not a true Jay-Z have until you have this DVD. What makes this so cool, is hearing Jay explain the process of making this incredible album with each producer. This album is arguably the greatest hip hop album of all-time. He explains the struggles, experiences of his drug dealing days in his music. I love this album because it's so real, in a sense just hearing Reasonble Doubt is almost like hearing a movie on audio. This a great watch, and it's something every real hip hop head should include in their collection. ....A MUST HAVE!

Jay-Z has been one of the most influential figures in Black American music since the mid-nineties. Initially as a performer racking up an incredibly successful string of hit singles and albums and latterly as an executive, having taken on the presidency of Def Jam Records in 2004. "Reasonable Doubt" was his debut album and is still considered by many to be his finest achievement. A much harder hitting and edgy record than his later more polished and pop orientated releases it announced to the world that a new rap star had arrived. This latest addition to the Classic Albums series sees Jay-Z take us back through the whole creative process behind this stunning first release."Classic Albums: Reasonable Doubt" will be airing on VH-1 Classic this fall.Features excerpts from: Can't Knock The Hustle (with Mary J Blige) Can I Live Dead Presidents II D'Evils Ain't No Nigga (with Foxy Brown) Coming Of Age Bring It On Regrets & more...Bonus Features Additional interviews and demonstrations not included in the broadcast version. Pootie Tang (2001) Review

Pootie Tang (2001)

Don't let the title lead you astray! This is NOT one of those gross-out sex movies that are all the rage at the metroplex. In fact, the title is the only offensive thing about the whole picture!
I went into this movie thinking it was going to be one of those "so bad it's good" movies. So you can imagine my surprise when I started laughing and couldn't stop until the final scene of the movie. It's nonsense. It's a joyful, daffy comedy. I mean, can you resist a movie with lines like, "Nobody could ever understand what Pootie was saying, but man, he sure was cool"? The characters and situations are over the top, but the actors are 100% committed to line after ridiculous line that it SOARS. It's one of those comedies that makes you think, "Why don't they make em like this anymore?"
The REAL star of this show, however, is Wanda Sykes who plays Pootie's gal Biggie Shorty, who "dresses up all nice and dances on the street next to a buncha ho's" (but that doesn't mean she's hookin'). She walks away with the whole picture. Chris Rock gives her some tough competition as a radio DJ and as Pootie's father, as does Jennifer Coolidge who plays the super-ho Ireenie, but in the end, Biggie Shorty is the star.
I'm speechless. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. And this coming from a guy whose favorite movies are CITIZEN KANE and CASABLANCA.

Afro Samurai (Director's Cut) (2007) Review

Afro Samurai (Director's Cut) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's no doubt that Afro Samurai has a cool and simple concept and a very bloody style. In this future world of feudal Japan nothing seems to matter but two headbands that represent the two best fighters. To get to the number one fighter you must go through the number two and to get to the number two you must go trough everyone else. This way of life that nobody should have to live especially a child who has nothing but the headbands and revenge on his mind. As a child Afro saw his father who was the number one fighter at the time get massacred by a man named Justice. After the fight is over Justice takes the number one headband off of the head of Afro's father, which was not too far away from his body. Justice tells Afro something similar to what Uma Thurman said to Vivica A. Fox's daughter in Kill Bill, that if he wanted revenge he would fight him when he came for him.
Afro took those words very seriously and took a few things of his fathers including his very cool Katana. Afro immediately went from an innocent child to an almost emotionless man with a ton of weight on him as he begins his vengeful journey. Afro Samurai is a unique anime or story for that matter. You don't see too many people willing to put out a story with basically nothing but very bloody fight scenes for about two episodes before a really good story starts up. Especially in a 5 part series where the episodes are only between 20 and 30 minutes long. I can't lie because I love stuff like that and it made Afro Samurai all the more tempting to finish watching. The second is that this was a pricy anime to make costing $1 million per episode so I'm sure a few viewers from the Hip hop community were expected to watch this. Even if you're an action film fan you have to admit when there's too much action and not enough story Even in a revenge tail like Kill Bill with a certain scene that this anime could relate to 88 times over it had a mystery and story.
Afro was on the verge of being in the too much and not enough category and then a cool story hits you somewhere around the end of episode two. Flashbacks of Afro's life are showed, you see him as a kid again and the people who took him in and gave him his gritty skills. All throughout the 5 part series you see that the money was well spent because the animation is amazing and beautiful. The things that Afro does with his skills are crazy and this animation was a giant step up for anime samurai fight scene, it was flawless. The voice actors are great including Sam Jackson who is great for co-producing this and putting his foot in it.
I think it would have been cool to actually give Afro a real name, it's cool for people that take him on to call him Afro but I think he should have had a name for his other life before he became the Afro Samurai. In other words I kind of wish the story went just a bit deeper with a little bit more complexity. I think that Afro Samurai is a great series that everyone should see especially to view its beautiful quality.

Old School Soul Party is another one in a series of the T. J. Lubinsky productions that seek to capture R&B greats in live performances for posterity. This release blends mostly very recent shows with shows from earlier years and does it wonderfully. The picture quality is great. As for the sound I found the 2 channel Prologic 2 preferable to the 5.1 surround. Regardless, the DVD is excellent overall with a very generous offering of songs that could easily have been issued as vol. 1 and 2 releases.

This has got to be one of the greatest performances ever available on DVD. The incredible originality and talent of James Brown and his players are on full display in this 1968 concert. You can read elsewhere about the social setting and great contribution made by these musicians (and dancers); as well, rest assured, this is one of the greatest live performances you'll ever experience. James Brown is in his prime; totally confident, totally in sync, like his successor Prince an extraordinary singer, dancer, showman; his band is fully up to his standard. Step Up 2 The Streets (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The fellow below me is, in all aspects, correct. If what you look for in a dance movie is to be highly distracted by a shabby plot. Me, I loved Step Up 2 for this very reason...
Most dance movies aim too high: they want killer dance scenes -with- an excellent plot. What do most wind up with? Trite, familiar plots they still try to execute even though we've seen them before (so we know well enough to follow along) while still delivering a sliver or two of dance sequences... but nowhere near the amount the usual viewer wants to see.
Now, Step Up 2 says a big "yeah right" to that entire idea.
There is next to NO plot. Yeah, it's there, barely. Enough to pretend that it's not one long music video. But, it really IS like one long music video--and that's wicked awesome. The dance scenes are long and intricate, the music is great, and it delivers on everything I want to see in a dance movie: less talking and more dancing.
So if you're into these sorts of movies for the chick flick value, it might be a skip or a rent. But if you're into it for, well, the dancing--I give it 5 stars.

It is an inside look into the Hip Hop video industry. A must have if you are curious about what goes on behind the curtains! It's not a pro-Karrine Steffans at all although it is very fair in balancing the point of view of the video vixen. Lots of sex going on and Wendy Williams should give up her day job and narrate docs! The title sequence is halarious. The DVD extras are great as well and unless you are a total prude you'll really enjoy this.

Reenactments show how Karrine sexed her way through the hip-hop world, climbing her way up the ladder before crashing to the bottom. "Second verse, same as the first!"
Yes, it's the return of the "Robot Chicken: Star Wars"! It's full of thrill, spills, chills, and maybe a little bit of love. (aw)
SEE: AT-AT races on Hoth!
SEE: A stormtrooper's version of Take Your Daughter to Work Day!
SEE: Jar Jar Binks pitching insurance!
SEE: Boba Fett being a total jerk!
SEE: The Emperor getting a haircut!
NOW with extra footage not seen on TV!
SEE: The notorious Q-wing!
SEE: Yoda and Obi-Wan's long-lost musical number!
SEE: The Endor holocaust brought to life on your screen!
SEE: Dengar's customized spaceship!
In every way surpassing the original "Robot Chicken: Star Wars", this one brings you everything you've come to expect from one of the most hilarious and bizarre programs on TV! Yes, it's the kind of hyperbolic insanity you can find only here, on this DVD! Well, and on [Adult Swim].
In addition to the program itself, there's a whole raft of extra features, including multiple commentary tracks, deleted scenes, trailers, bumps and oodles of other nonsense!
It's one heck of a show, and only someone with a midicolorian count in the negative numbers would... would...
Ah, hell, I can't keep this up. It's a good disc. If you liked the first, you'll like this. Buy and enjoy! I certainly did. :)

Robot Chicken: Star Wars 2 brazenly combines the satirical sensibilities of Seth Green and Matthew Senreich's (Stoopid Monkey Productions) Robot Chicken with the unforgettable moments and favorite characters of the Star Wars universeamong them, its creator himself, George Lucas. Transformed into the stop-motion animated characters that are the hallmark of Adult Swim's Robot Chicken, and in conjunction with ShadowMachine Films (Alex Bulkley/Corey Campodonico), the Star Wars galaxy takes on an entirely different attitude.
