Nurse Betty (2000) Review

Nurse Betty (2000)

(More customer reviews)
A young waitress in a small town in Kansas witnesses an act of violence so unspeakable that her mind refuses to accept it; instead, like a ray of light reflected through a prism, she takes a detour within herself and enters a reality in which things are just a little bit better and nicer, one that fuses with the world of her favorite soap opera wherein resides the "doctor" of her dreams. Renee Zellweger stars in "Nurse Betty," a satirical comedy/drama with some serious psychological overtones from director Neil LaBute. It's an objective look at, among other things, small town life, the aesthetics of professional hit men, an unhealthy (?) obsession with soap operas, and the ethics of car salesmen. One thing is certain: After the aforementioned incident, Dorothy isn't in Kansas anymore. And her story becomes an odyssey of sorts, one that is both exhilarating and hilarious, and by turn somber and disturbing. Since those with whom Betty comes into contact do not realize that she is dwelling within a reality of her own design, it creates moments of absolute side-splitting hilarity as they try to figure out what is going on with her; is she putting them on, or is she in fact, deranged? But at the same time, even as you're laughing, there is an element of discomfort about it, because you know the truth of it all, and what a sad and serious situation it really is. You feel, not only for Betty, but for all of those involved with her as well, and it's like manic depression; you ride the wild highs, but come down just as hard. As Betty, Renee Zellweger gives what just may be the best performance of her career; there is such a gentleness of nature about her, a winsomeness and pacificism that makes her such a wonderfully sympathetic character. Early in the film LaBute establishes what kind of a person Betty is; she's easy to like and someone you care about instantly, someone you want to see good things happen to. And it makes the impact of the violence with which she is visited all the more profound (and be advised, the scene is shockingly reminiscent of the torture scene in "Reservoir Dogs;" somewhat graphic, but because of excellent directing and editing, you get the illusion of seeing more than you actually are. It is definitely one that you will not soon forget). These are things that should not happen to someone like Betty; it just doesn't seem fair somehow, and the connection that she makes with the audience underscores what a brilliant job Zellweger has done. Equal credit, of course, has to go to Neil LaBute, for creating the perfect atmosphere through which the desired results are so impeccably delivered. The serene, almost lilting essence of Betty's reality, this kind of "Pleasantville" into which she has entered, contrasts so vividly with the thread of violence and menace laced throughout that it heightens the emotional response to it all. He has successfully managed the perfect balancing of the pure with the despicable and enhanced it all with pace, timing and some memorable performances. Besides Zellweger, Morgan Freeman is outstanding as Charlie, the aging hit-man out to finish one last job before retiring. He brings a commanding demeanor to the role, coupled with a maturity and intelligence that adds so much to the depth of the character. And Greg Kinnear, as Dr. David Ravell/George McCord, gives a definitive performance as the soap opera star of Betty's dreams. It is a character Kinnear was born to play and he covers all the bases, leaving no doubt as to just exactly who and what this guy is all about. Notable performances also are turned in by Chris Rock, as Wesley, Charlie's protege; and by Aaron Eckhart, as Del, Betty's sleazy, neglectful car salesman husband. Rounding out the supporting cast are Tia Texada (Rosa), Crispin Glover (Roy), Pruitt Taylor Vince (Ballard), Allison Janney (Lyla) and Kathleen Wilhoite (Sue Ann). Rarely are there so many truly memorable performances in a single movie, and again, LaBute must be given credit for bringing out the best in his actors; it adds a polish to the finished product that is inestimable. Another reason for the success of this film is that the humor is natural and true; rather than being forced or contrived it issues from real situations and the characters reactions to them, and LaBute plays everything straight, which makes it all real. The laughs (and there are many) are born of their own merit; each one is honest and earned. And again, because of that purity of delivery, it makes the drama all the more effective. Well made and delivered, "Nurse Betty" is highly entertaining and certainly memorable; a funny, emotional movie that will have you alternately gasping and cheering. Check this one out; it's a motion picture experience you do not want to miss.

Pootie Tang (2001) Review

Pootie Tang (2001)

Don't let the title lead you astray! This is NOT one of those gross-out sex movies that are all the rage at the metroplex. In fact, the title is the only offensive thing about the whole picture!
I went into this movie thinking it was going to be one of those "so bad it's good" movies. So you can imagine my surprise when I started laughing and couldn't stop until the final scene of the movie. It's nonsense. It's a joyful, daffy comedy. I mean, can you resist a movie with lines like, "Nobody could ever understand what Pootie was saying, but man, he sure was cool"? The characters and situations are over the top, but the actors are 100% committed to line after ridiculous line that it SOARS. It's one of those comedies that makes you think, "Why don't they make em like this anymore?"
The REAL star of this show, however, is Wanda Sykes who plays Pootie's gal Biggie Shorty, who "dresses up all nice and dances on the street next to a buncha ho's" (but that doesn't mean she's hookin'). She walks away with the whole picture. Chris Rock gives her some tough competition as a radio DJ and as Pootie's father, as does Jennifer Coolidge who plays the super-ho Ireenie, but in the end, Biggie Shorty is the star.
I'm speechless. This is one of my favorite movies of all time. And this coming from a guy whose favorite movies are CITIZEN KANE and CASABLANCA.

African American Lives 2 (2008) Review

African American Lives 2 (2008)
Average Reviews:

If you have followed the PBS 4 hour mini-series "African American Lives 2" this February, then you will want to purchase the DVD I am certain. This amazingly well documented and directed expose of 12 "black" people, including the likes of Pop Diva Icon Tina Turner, comedian Chris Rock, everybody's favorite narrator Morgan Freeman, actor Don Cheadle as well as historians, preachers and Harvard Professors, whose racial identity is disclosed to them through court documents, wills, ship manifests and the newest advances in DNA technology yielding surprises beyond belief to them as well as myself!!!
Who we are is simply not that easy to say.Where we come from is not as simple as black or white. What is being "black" anyway? What is being "white"? What do you do with information when culture tells you that you are one "race", but DNA tells you either way more or the opposite? These are the complex questions that are answered in great detail for these 12 people, identified as "black" or "African-American." (Frankly, this is so interesting that any "race" will benefit immensely from this documentary film!)
This documentary brilliantly is non-biased and quite moving.See how Don Cheadle reacts when he finds that his family was owned by Native Americans!!!! Tina Turner is one third European and NO Native American blood! Chris Rock is 1/5 "white"! There is even the authoress Briss Bryson who has always been "white" who discovers that she has more African blood than most "negroes"!!!! What do we do with such information? Does it change who we are,or does it complete who we are? Henry Gates,Harvard Professor is 50% Irish, and yet has always identified as "African." African-American Radio personality Tom Joyner is overwhelmed when he sees a painting of his 5th-great grandfather, a white Supreme Court Judge who has the exact same grey eyes. This stuff is overwhelming! Lots of myths are dispelled about certain long held beliefs about slavery.Others are confirmed.Did all blacks come from slavery? No.Did "free blacks" live in the Old South-overwhelmingly! Anyone interested in their heritage, whatever it may be, will be touched and challenged to dig into their past and ask questions about whence they came. Will what you find, though, affect where you are going?
A fascinating companion film to this would be Frontline By PBS ; Jefferson's Blood, and African American Lives.I cannot give a higher recommendation for purchase than this documentary.LOOK FOR THIS TO AIR AGAIN IN THE NEXT WEEKS ON PBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Osmosis Jones (2001) Review

Osmosis Jones (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Osmosis Jones is one of those movies you almost feel like you have to apologize for liking. Well, forget about it, because this is a very funny and downright entertaining movie with no class whatsoever!
The scenes bounce between live acting and full animation, determined by whether we are outside or inside the body of Frank. The casting for this silly and peculiar movie was expertly chosen for both live and voice roles.
Live, we have Bill Murray as Frank, in his most disgusting character since Caddyshack. Chris Elliot plays his brother Bob, and manages to challenge Murray in the "disgusting slob" category. Murray eats a hard boiled egg that landed in monkey doodoo, and thus introduces Thrax into his body, a red-death virus determined to take over Frank and kill him. (voiced by Laurence Fishburne)
Inside of Frank, we go to the animation where Chris Rock is the voice of our hero, a white blood cell named Osmosis Jones. Jones is a detective for the City Of Frank, where William Shatner does the voice for Mayor Phlemming. Jones knows something is wrong, but the Mayor denies any illness could occur in Frank. But just to be safe, he "manually overrides" Frank and has him take a cold pill.
Meet Drix, the huge and snotty cold pill, whose voice is played by David Hyde Pierce (Frazier's brother Niles). Jones and Drix make an unlikely team as they hunt down Thrax and try to stop him from killing Frank.
Nothing is taboo here; they go to the nose and get caught up in the wave of snot when Frank's allergies act up, they travel to The Zit, Frank's hottest new club where Kidney Rock is playing (Kidd Rock), and Jones reminisces about the time he hit the "Panic Button" in Frank's stomach, causing him to vomit all over his daughter Shane's teacher. (played live action by Molly Shannon)
Boogers, snot, vomit, farts, and zits; its all here. Ron Howard even does a guest voice as Tom Colonic, running for Mayor against Phlemming, who broadcasts his campaign commercial from The Bowels.
This is visceral entertainment with a squishy feel to it, riotously funny and well endowed with toilet humor; silly campy comedy at its very best. In David Litton's excellent review below, he mentioned that this was a "Fun Time-waster". Indeed it is, David. Enjoy!

Good Hair (2009) Review

Good Hair (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Comedian Chris Rock takes a look at the lengths some people in the African-American community, especially women, go to for "good hair". Near the beginning and end of the movie Rock visits the Bronner Hair Show in Atlanta, Georgia, a huge trade convention for the manufacturers of black hair products. Here he highlights four stylists competing for the title of champion platform performer, an elaborate stage show featuring music, dance, costumes and, of course, hairstyling. In between Rock discusses all the time and money spent using relaxer and getting weaves as well as the possible psychological and cultural reasons behind this obsession with hair.
Rock's take on the subject seems to be that it is more important what's in your head than on your head. But it also recognizes the pressures placed on black women to fit in with society's beauty standards and understands why these women forsake their natural hair for perms and extensions. The film delves into serious subjects but maintains a funny and playful tone throughout. I certainly found myself laughing more than I did at the usual Hollywood comedy. And I even left the theater feeling a little smarter about a topic I knew almost nothing about. One of the better documentaries of the year.

Everybody Hates Chris - The Second Season (2005)

This 2nd season is not as hilarious as the 1st, but it still has it's moments, the show has also grown with recurring roles from Whoopi Goldberg, Jackee Harry, Todd bridges, Ernest(Raj)Thomas, Loretta Devine, Antonio Fargas and more. Not that much editing has been done, even some of the original music has been left in. Some standout episodes are "Everybody hates Thanksgiving" "Everybody hates skipping school", "Everybody hates DJs" In overall, this is still some of the best writing a sitcom has seen in quite some time, if you enjoyed the 1st season, you'll enjoy the 2nd seaon as well.

Everybody Hates Chris - The First Season (2005) Review

Everybody Hates Chris - The First Season (2005)
Average Reviews:

This is one of the funniest shows around. I really love it. Chris Rock narrates, while actors act out the story of his childhood when he was 13 years old. It's about Chris and his family moving out of the projects and making a new start. Chris goes to school by himself to a good school in an Italian neighborhood (a real long haul) while his two siblings (younger brother Drew and younger sister Tonya go to their same school) so he has to learn to fight new battles as he tries to fit in. His first day there he faces a bully but also makes a new friend Greg (who couldn't win a fight if he tried). Back at home there is his dad Julius (played by the hilarious Terry Crews) and his take-no-nonsense mum Rochelle. His dad is really tight and tries to save money wherever he can and however he can.
All the episodes are called Everyone Hates The ... and each episode keeps getting better and better. To me, my favourite is episode 7 called Everyone Hates The Babysitter. Julius and Rochelle decide to have a date night and hire this girl to babysit the three kids. She always leaves the house to take care of her business. That in itself is funny but then Julius and Rochelle are at a restaurant that doesn't accept their coupon and the restaurant gets robbed.
It's such a great show and you will be in stitches watching it. Chris Rock narrates perfectly and you can see his life coming to life in each episode. I love it and hope you enjoy it and are as entertained by it as much as I am. I can't wait to get my copy.
