When this arrived I threw it on just to quickly check the image quality, intending to watch it when I had some free time. Almost two hours later, unable to turn it off at any point, I'm compelled to sit at the keys for a quick review...
I've never bought into the label of Greatest British Female Vocalist as applied to Dusty. To me, quite clearly and beyond argument, she was and remains the Greatest Female Vocalist of All Time, period, and this superbly crafted DVD I think frames that conclusion in gold and hangs it so high on the wall that it can't be reached.
This is Dusty naked - no interviews interrupting old clips, no guest stars, no bogus sets, and every note is sung and played live. Just Dusty, three backup singers and a great orchestra offstage, and crazy, very receptive audiences.
Dusty is in great spirits, she's funny, clever, very playful, chatty and Dear God could this woman sing. From that breathy intimate voice that sounds like it's coming from the pillow next to you... to that rockin', belting, jazz drenched powerhouse voice that knocks every ball out of the park be it Motown or supper club standards... this girl could seemingly do anything.
Only the extras are in color - the central body of the disc is in glorious, crystal clear and razor sharp black and white, and she's never looked better. That hair, those eyes, that smile... she's simply stunning. Still photos never did her justice - Dusty was a beautiful woman.
Great camerawork thoughout, with tons of lingering closeups and a genuine understanding of what the slower songs are all about.
This leaves all the other Dusty DVD's far behind. It's the one you've been waiting for, it really is. If you're a serious Dusty fan, imagine what you'd want in a live disc... well, this is better. You'll laugh, a few songs may put a tear in your eye, but you'll mostly be reminded of what a gigantic talent this woman was. Sit in the dark and watch her sing "If You Go Away"... and you may find the earth stops turning for a couple of minutes.

If I could change anything on this concert, I would allow Blue Magic and The Manhattans as well as the other performers to sing more of their hits. I am very excited about this concert and can't wait to have friends in so they can enjoy it with me. This concert was very well done. Thank you.

(More customer reviews)Although this DVD is from a Christmas program on PBS the majority of songs here are good old traditional southern gospel. The entire show is terriffic but if you want around 45 minutes of non stop goose bumps and high energy from guys old enough to be your grandparents or great grandparents skip directly to their stunning version of Amazing Grace and hold on tight to the very end of the show. Lead singer Jimmy Carter (no not that Jimmy Carter thank goodness) is one of the most charismatic performers in the history of show business. When he is led into the audience while performing Look Where He Brought Me From he brings the house down or more appropriately way way up again and again. I only paid $2.50 for the DVD but in the short time I have had I have gotten $1,000 worth of enjoyment from it

The Blind Boys of Alabama have spread the spirit and energy of pure soul gospel music for over 60 years, ever since the first version of the group formed at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in 1939. This DVD should be used in video production classes...as an example of how NOT to mix video!
Every trick in the book is thrown at a pace nobody could possibly like or enjoy. It is a dizzying ridiculous production. Unfortunately it completely spoils any hope of enjoying this DVD. What is the point of all the blurry shots, ridiculous close-ups and sweeps? It is amateurish as it can possibly get. What a shame. This is not a matter of taste, this is just plain BAD. Again, of the 60+ music concert DVDs I own, this disc by far has the worst video production.
I mean the crime is huge. Joss is having a great set. Her band is cooking. The bass player and drummer are great...setting a sweet pocket groove for the rest of the players to glide on. The background singers sound good (although the video shows clearer shots and more footage of them than Joss! Huh?). The crowd is diggin it. Joss is giggling like a schoolgirl at how much fun she is having. The vocals are soulful and inspired.
But the &%*%#@ video producer killed the disc. I can't even watch it after the first few songs; I had to turn my TV off. Again, what a crying shame. They robbed everyone of what could have been a great keeper 5-star disc.
I guess we will all have to wait for Joss' Austin City Limits set to come out on DVD. They just started producing some of their sessions. The Susan Tedeschi one is excellent.

I Got the Feelin': James Brown in the 60's (2008) Review

Here we have two transcendant excursions into Soul Music history, 1968 concerts made within about two weeks of each other, one at the Apollo, the other at the Boston Gardens, and whether or not the proverbial floodgates will be opened, at this point it doesn't matter. The concerts are amazing: Soul Brother Number One at the very top of his form, a singing, dancing, band-directing, audience mesmerizing phenomenon. His renditions of the ballads "Try Me", "Bewildered", the gospel-jazz expositions like "Get It Together", "There Was A Time", and "Cold Sweat" are of course the best out now on DVD.
The earlier TV Special called "Man To Man" appears to be the final TV cut, no extras. The video quality is not what it should be for an artist of his stature, though let's remember that it was done on videotape by Metromedia in New York, not by a network. The viewer should not be upset with some of the trendy kaleidoscope effects, and some hard edits.
We have the much-discussed, much-requested concert from Boston, telecast one day after the assassination of Doctor Martin Luther King. The atmosphere is naturally tense, involves Mayor Kevin White, who delivers a powerful speech.
As ticketholders were offered a refund so as to stay at home and watch the taping, the audience is comparatively sparse. Yet the consummate showman is still able to elicit audible screams on his passionate, intense, sometimes whispered, sometimes belted "It's Man's, Man's, Man's World". He's also able to excite those patrons...the initiated already know the story of those who rushed the stage on a night that all were asked to remember Doctor King and enjoy James Brown in Peace. It was on outpouring of Love but the camera lens can distort. And Brown knew it.
There are two songs live from the Olympia, 1966 and 1967, though the jacket says 1968 and 1967. The latter was totally unexpected by this Brownologist: the Live At The Apollo, Volume Two arrangemet of "It's A Man's....World"! Not gonna give it all up at this juncture - suffice to say, it's way better on this DVD than on the recent, expanded CD reissue.
The Documentary on Disc Three is surely worth an Oscar.
The bits and pieces of that 1968 concert now form into an amazing whole, which the Documentary Producer duly notes was long, long overdue for commercial release. To support his backstory, is the sensuous Marva Whitney, his 1967-1970 Diva (Disc Two should have included some of her performance); and Charles Bobbitt, his Manager, who tells the story of how he became James Brown's Manager - and how he had to watch the turnstiles that night...and the safety of his friend and client.

That is not to say the Diva is not as high energy as always, but that you can see her true beauty and grace in this tape filmed at the beautiful Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. If you've never seen Patti, she's a rare performer who takes you to the clouds with her first note, and doesn't let you back down until two days after the show is over. Patti starts the show in the back of the house, belting out the classic I Believe. Act I concludes with a performance of You Are My Friend/Lord's Side that'll make you swear you see Jesus clappin' his hands. Act II is Patti at her best! Backed by a full orchestra, Patti covers songs from Edith Piaf, Dionne Warwick, Ashford & Simpson and others. She closes out with a powerhouse performance of Over the Rainbow/I Believe I Can Fly. Even superstars Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey join in the fun. You'll laugh, you'll cry and then you'll start the show all over again just to experience it one more time. My only concern. . .can your soul and your speakers handle the performance?

(More customer reviews)Truly an extraordinary DVD package which includes the very essence of the Temptations!
Most of the performances were lip-synched, but just to see them perform on these classic clips, you can truly feel the magic either for the first time if you haven't seen them during their glory days or if you are a nostalgic fan revisiting the past! Groovy shows such as the Hollywood Palace, The Ed Sullivan Show (of which I have many video clips of the Tempts on VHS) and Murray the K features the Tempts doing what they are known around the world for...doing their precise movements, singing their tight harmonies AND looking good doing it!
For me, the extras are what impress me, especially viewing the Tempts hard at work on SORRY IS A SORRY WORD, a taping for the CBS News segment, THE MOTOWN SOUND.
Otis's interview throughout the DVD and during the bonus feature is also another highlight for me. He was there through it all and is still around to tell us about the magic of the Temptations!
The acapella section on 15 of their biggest hits continues to awe and astound me! It is like they didn't need a rhythm section...the harmonies were that tight!
Complete with never-before released photos and another excellent essay by Rob Bowman, this is a must have!

(More customer reviews)Old School Soul Party is another one in a series of the T. J. Lubinsky productions that seek to capture R&B greats in live performances for posterity. This release blends mostly very recent shows with shows from earlier years and does it wonderfully. The picture quality is great. As for the sound I found the 2 channel Prologic 2 preferable to the 5.1 surround. Regardless, the DVD is excellent overall with a very generous offering of songs that could easily have been issued as vol. 1 and 2 releases.

(More customer reviews)As usual PRINCE is great in concert, and here is the DVD to prove it. Whether or not you were onboard with his last CD THE RAINBOW CHILDREN, there's plenty here to keep fans interested. It's gorgeously filmed, and very funky. Throw in Sheila E on percussion and Eric Leeds on horns, and you have a reason to dress in purple paisley once again. Straight up this is just a live performance with no frills. But interestingly enough it's priced low enough to make it more affordable than seing Prince live. He seems laid back and happy to be on stage, and he works his magic on every track from "Pop Life" to a blistering rendition of Led Zeplin's "Whole Lotta Love". One interesting thing I noticed was that the sound varied a little. As he moves around the stage the vocals seem to get louder or softer. It may not bug you since this is pretty much a natural thing live, but audio purists may wonder why they didn't adjust the levels to keep it all uniform for home viewing.

Once The !!!! Beat was only a legend. Fans and collectors heard that there was a television show in the mid-1960s that captured the absolute very best of the soul and R&B singers of the day. Some said it was made in Nashville and some said that it was made in Dallas. Musicians remembered working on the show and a few people remembered seeing it, but no one seemed to know what had happened to it. Did the tapes still exist? How many shows were there? (More customer reviews)Every once in a while a premium priced DVD set comes along that it worth every dime of its list price. Such a set is The !!!! Beat, a long-forgotten music show from 1966 that is absolutely unbelievable in its scope and quality. The DVD's of this important series are released by Bear Family Records, long known for their quality re-issues of entire catalogues of some of the most revered artists in roots music.
The !!!! Beat, which followed hot on the heels of The Night Train, the first all-black music television show, began production in January 1966, and was the brain-child of famed radio disc-jockey William "Hoss" Allen. The !!!! Beat did The Night Train one better; it was produced in full-color, and guest-starred a who's-who of national and regional stars from the world of Blues and R & B. The six-volume DVD series contains all 26 episodes, and was shot at WFAA in Dallas Texas, one of the few Southern stations to have color facilities at the time. Interestingly, all of the performers were recruited from one of four cities; Nashville, Dallas, Chicago or New Orleans. Most of the performers were managed by "Hoss" Allen or his associates.
The video quality is generally excellent, although there are some imperfections in the source tapes due to the age of the materials. Each DVD contains 4 or 5 half-hour episodes; the performers range from some of the biggest names in R & B or Blues of the time to relative unknowns. Even so, the performances are generally spirited and of the highest artistic quality. Although a number of the performances are lip-synched to any given artist's hit records, many songs were taped "live" with the show's excellent house band. According to the notes in the 20-page booklet which accompanies each DVD, "live" takes outnumber the lip-synched performances about two to one. Each booklet contains the fascinating story behind the show, and a brief bio of each artist! Take a chance on any one volume, and you may find yourself buying the whole series, which is exactly what happened to me.
Volume Three includes performances by Jimmy Church, Wanda Rouzan, Gatemouth Brown, Louis Jordan, Charles "Charlie" Hodges, Howard & the Commanders, The Mighty Hannibal, Little Gary Ferguson, Johnny Taylor, The Beat Boys, The Dolls, Bobby Powell, Rodge Martin, Maurice & The Radiants, and The Poppies.
Highly recommended.
