(More customer reviews)Great selection of artists and songs,BUT: Eric Burdon should've sung his hits with the original arrangements and this show should have been recorded with better sound equipment. The sound on this DVD is only in stereo and TERRIBLE at that!
I'll still watch it from time to time, but the above mentioned 2 items take away from my full enjoyment of this disc.

Launched by the Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964, the British Invasion brought an exciting new sound, the latest fashions and mopish hairstyles that made parents cringe. A wave of British bands came stateside and dominated the American pop charts, setting the tone for an entire generation. (More customer reviews)This DVD features the show held in Nov.,2005. Many major talents are represented here, like veterans Jimmy Dickens and Bill Anderson to newer stars like Brad Paisley and Trace Adkins. Great songs such as Ricky Scaggs' "Black Eyed Suzie" and Trisha Yearwood on "She's In Love With The Boy" and many other popular favorites from such artists as Vince Gill, Charley Pride, Martina McBride and Alan Jackson. The shining gem of the evening though, is Alison Krauss & Union Station's performance of the Patsy Cline tune "She's Got You". Alison's crystal clear voice will give you chills.
This show was well produced and recorded, it's a keeper!

Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I was a little bit shocked that this version of the Documentary "Fillmore, the last days" isn't even the complete film.
Rhino what in the world possessed you guys to elminate the best performance in the movie? Was it money? It certianly wasn't due to a time constraint.. Did Boz Skaggs not want any involvement? I find it hard to understand that aspect as there where announcements regarding the release of this months ago on his website.. Why the sudden disappearce of his footage and involvment? The movie itself is just O.K. but when you take out argueably one of the better performances it doesn't make it any more attractive to purchase..There were so many better performances that week that got captured on audio, Only the visuals are lacking.. (where is "Brother can you spare a dime" w/t Tower of Power horns" ... damn what a shame... Rhino.. I guess this probabley is the main reason this release was held up and pushed back..Money , Money , Money, not art.
Also this would have been the perfect type of release that would have cried out for extra bonus footage and important talking heads going on and on about the Fillmore and what it meant to them..Oh well another missed opportunity..I hope Rhinos other ventures into films and their preservation at least have the sense to realize that a film is a piece of art no matter how big or small and deserves to be seen as the director intended..Not cut for time or money concerns..put it out like it was meant to be seen..truly dreadful Rhino..

Old School Soul Party Live (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Old School Soul Party is another one in a series of the T. J. Lubinsky productions that seek to capture R&B greats in live performances for posterity. This release blends mostly very recent shows with shows from earlier years and does it wonderfully. The picture quality is great. As for the sound I found the 2 channel Prologic 2 preferable to the 5.1 surround. Regardless, the DVD is excellent overall with a very generous offering of songs that could easily have been issued as vol. 1 and 2 releases.

British Invasion - 1960s & 1970s (2005) Review

The Beatles (1964)
The Rolling Stones (1964)
The Yardbirds (1965)
The Animals (1965 & 1966)
The Moody Blues (1965)
The Zombies (1965)
The Searchers (1965)
Herman's Hermits (1965)
John Lennon (1972)
The song list is accurate. The approximate run time is 45 minutes not 60 minutes.
This is a very enjoyable DVD for 60's music fans (there is only one 70's song, "Imagine" by John Lennon). Below are some points of view:
Pros
* These are rare showcases of the songs listed. Two very rare performances in particular are "Go Now" by the original Moody Blues led by Denny Laine (about 7 years prior to joining Paul & Linda McCartney in Wings) and "She's Not There" by The Zombies. For many years "Go Now" was the biggest selling song in British history.
* The line-up on this is great representations of that periods British Invasion. Too bad some Dave Clark Five and Gerry and the Pacemakers weren't included.
* The John Lennon sections on this DVD are very cool. He sings on the only color performance of the disc on the Mike Douglas Show (the audio and video is not quite as good as the Dick Cavett show of the same period) and there are 3 interviews with John's sister Julia Baird on the Bonus section. She discusses not only John's early years but also the Beatles.
Cons
* The picture quality on most are very poor. Unfortunately, this is about as good as it gets for these particular shows (i.e.: Hullabaloo). There are other DVD's with many of these songs by the same artists sung the same year that are much better (i.e.: The Ed Sullivan Show, The Beatles Anthology, Imagine).
* Same goes for sound quality. Very poor for the same reasons.
* Overpriced [...] for 11 songs and 45 minutes in length.

The '60s Rock Experience Live (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)My experience with the PBS concert series has always been a good to great one. Unfortunately, this is the first one I have been slightly disappointed with. This December 9th, 2004 event definitely does not compare with others such as the many Soul, Doo Wop and Pop events. I expected the 60's Rock Experience reunion to be one of my favorites but I must agree with the last reviewer that the "fake or canned" applause is annoying. Below is my observation:
Pros
----
* Audio: 5 stars (excluding the older footage); 5.1 audio
* Video: 4.5 stars (only due to the stage lighting; clarity is fine on new performances)
* 142 min. long with 29 songs/performances (old and new).
* Good mix of Rock, Folk Rock and Pop artists. Good line-up.
Cons
----
* Fake applause. One example is Scott McKenzie's performance of "San Francisco. A wonderful performance ruined by this annoying "canned" crowd cheer. Same goes for Martha Reeves performance (Rock Experience??) and Eric Burdon. It's not as evident on the pre-taped performance of "Whiter Shade of Pale" by Gary Brooker and Procol Harum.
* Mixed results on old footage. Some pretty good (The Doors), some rare but severely chopped (The original Moody Blues with Denny Laine on lead vocals singing "Go Now") and some just poor.
Still a fun DVD just to see these artists on a nationally televised event. Some voices have aged well (i.e.: Rob Grill, Chuck Negron) and others have suffered slightly but still a good time.
