(More customer reviews)Because if I ever hear of one that's out on DVD, I will be the first one to buy it. Frankly, I don't get it. I know people filmed them, and I know that people can remaster image and sound. I know that The Band, Crosby, Stills, and Nash, and even Hendrix has an access of footage that exists. If anyone is holding back on us fans, please cease. Anyway, this DVD is not as essential as you might think (well, the CREAM DVD is, it is full of nice info. and hilarious interviews), but that doesn't mean that you shouldn't buy it if you are a true fan. A musician here shows you how to strum and fingerpick a couple of Creedence tunes, although this is not a tuturial. I just wish the other band members, including its author John Fogerty, would've allowed themselves to be interviewed. Plus, I know there is studio footage somewhere. But in the meantime, just enjoy this "inside" look--it is a good film and it's nice to see Stu Cook today, but don't expect a great archive of unseen material and in-depth liner note-style comments. The film is more like an appreciation of them--but how can they help it? It is very difficult to slam a group that played this well and wrote so many wonderful and timeless songs.

Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Having purchased some really bad concert DVD's, I was not sure what to expect here. While you can definitely tell that this is old video, I was surprised and excited by the audio and video quality. Jim Croce brings a depth of emotion and warmth to his performances.
Three songs are not played live in concert, but show photographs and video footage of Jim with his family. This is deeply moving. The live recordings are not of one concert, but a variety of formats. Although it was obvious that some of these recordings were for TV, these recordings brought back memories of the coffeehouse era. Just two guys with guitars singing into microphones. Jim Croce talks before some of the songs. There is nothing to interfere with the enjoyment of the music. This DVD creates the experience of actually being there. There is direct access to every song. The 16 songs are 52 minutes long. The bonus features are 21 minutes long.
Ingrid gives a 52 minute commentary. She describes how she and Jim Croce met and how she fell in love with him. She talks about Jim's life and career. She tearfully describes their last conversation and reminds us that Jim Croce was not the only one to die in the plane crash, that guitarist Maury Muehleisen died with him. (Road manager Dennis Rast, booking agent Ken Cortese, comedian George Stevens, and pilot Robert Elliott were killed in this crash.) The 21 minute commentary by A.J. Croce discusses getting to know his father as a person through Jim's music and interviews of those who knew Jim. He talks about the bonus features included in the DVD.
Seeing Jim Croce brought back the profound sense of loss of this wonderful man and tremendous talent. This over 2 hour DVD is an intensely personal and intimate picture of Jim Croce the man, husband, father, and friend, and Jim Croce the musician. This tribute to Jim Croce is a reminder to us of how brief life is. "Have You Heard - Jim Croce Live" is a tremendous DVD and I highly recommend it.

Take Me Home (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)While it interesting to have some decent actors associated with this film, it is also very disheartening for any of Johns fans to see so many inaccuracies in this production. The songs are mostly all out of chronological order, and Chad Lowe trying to mime to Johns voice while "playing" unconvincing guitar, does not work. Kristen Davis does a nice job of portraying "Annie", but the film fails to capture the quality of John's music, or his deep commitment to the causes, that drove so much of his work. There is no attempt to analyse why his life became such a struggle for a man at the top of the world. If Hal Thau was indeed involved so deeply with this project, its a crying shame that so many of the production details were poorly researched. John was a highly intelligent and passionate man who spoke in Congress, and lobbyed politicians to help with his environment projects, but in this film he comes across as whinny and insipid - two things he was definately not.
The man deserved a better biopic of his fascinaing life than this tardy effort.

John Prine - Live from Sessions at West 54th (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)John Prine is one of those rare artists who both define and occupy a niche in pop music. I've been a fan of John since the mid-1970's in Chicago, where you could catch Prine and Steve Goodman on a double bill - or just sitting in on each other's acts - at The Quiet Knight for a two drink minimum. His catchy, eclectic and highly personal songs are always interesting and sometimes extraordinary.
But not until this DVD have you been able to catch the spirit of a John Prine concert. I don't know why it has taken so long, but I'm grateful that it is here at last. It's not quite the same as being there, but it's a treat even so.
I bought the DVD after a concert here in Fairbanks, just last week. Except for not having Iris Dement for the cuts from "In Spite of Ourselves" (John sang both parts himself), this DVD captures the spirit, the goofy sincerity and charm, of John Prine very well. The camera work is quite good, the editing is crisp and smooth, and his band, Jason Wilber and David Jacques, are nearly perfect.
Life hasn't treated John all that well. He's had his woman problems ("All the Best" was written for his ex-wife's wedding), his best friend died, he's had a hip transplant and scary brush with cancer. But it hasn't affected his music or his evident joy in life. He seems to live his life and write his music with the message of "Bruised Orange" in mind: "It don't do no good to get angry, believe me, I know."
John Prine fans: this DVD belongs in your collection. You will savor it for years to come. For those who don't know John, get "Souvenirs," his latest CD release, and this DVD, and see what the fuss is all about.
And thanks, John. It was a great concert. It's a great DVD. Keep up the good work.

It was very insightful covering what inspired John to write certain songs, what was happening in his life during the times he was writing them, and gave a well rounded perspective of his life and career taken from his own narratives as well as those who knew him personally or worked with him through the years. A definite "Must have" for any John Denver fan!!!

Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I was a little bit shocked that this version of the Documentary "Fillmore, the last days" isn't even the complete film.
Rhino what in the world possessed you guys to elminate the best performance in the movie? Was it money? It certianly wasn't due to a time constraint.. Did Boz Skaggs not want any involvement? I find it hard to understand that aspect as there where announcements regarding the release of this months ago on his website.. Why the sudden disappearce of his footage and involvment? The movie itself is just O.K. but when you take out argueably one of the better performances it doesn't make it any more attractive to purchase..There were so many better performances that week that got captured on audio, Only the visuals are lacking.. (where is "Brother can you spare a dime" w/t Tower of Power horns" ... damn what a shame... Rhino.. I guess this probabley is the main reason this release was held up and pushed back..Money , Money , Money, not art.
Also this would have been the perfect type of release that would have cried out for extra bonus footage and important talking heads going on and on about the Fillmore and what it meant to them..Oh well another missed opportunity..I hope Rhinos other ventures into films and their preservation at least have the sense to realize that a film is a piece of art no matter how big or small and deserves to be seen as the director intended..Not cut for time or money concerns..put it out like it was meant to be seen..truly dreadful Rhino..

James Taylor - Pull Over (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm a bit torn when it comes to this DVD. On the one hand, James Taylor is an extremely talented musician, especially in concert. The material on this DVD is everything a Taylor fan could hope for - the classics like Fire and Rain, a few less well-known songs such as Frozen Man (beautifully done on this DVD), and some stuff from October Road. But the production values on the DVD itself are a bit less than stellar. The quality of the picture is okay at best, and at times rather poor. Also, whoever did the camera transitions should be fired - call me picky, but the transitions between views were often poorly timed and lent absolutely nothing to the experience of watching the performance.
Still, despite all this, I give it five stars because I love James Taylor, and I love his music. Any fan who can say the same will surely like this DVD. The technical issues aside, I am very pleased with Pull Over. It's no substitute for seeing James perform in person, but it is nevertheless a must-have for James Taylor addicts.

Elton John - Dream Ticket (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I sometimes wonder when artists really seem to make a very good play at selling a item only at a exclusive shop. It sometimes seems to be a good idea, but otherwise it isn't that good to know that other stores don't actually sell it. That really is the case with Elton John. He recently pulled that jester off with Best Buy recently, as a way to promote his DVD box set Dream Ticket. It is unfortunate especially when other stores are only selling his Peachtree Road record. Only in their stores, not this DVD collection. Yet, many people really don't seem to know what is missing from the man who sang Take Me To The Pilot.
Elton John Dream Ticket is a four disc DVD box set, which fatures a series of different concerts Elton John performed in, throught many diferent areas around the world. The first disc was the live concert One Night Only: The Greatest Hits. This was the only concert released before. The songs here really stand out very well, and the performances also capture Elton in his highlights with so many great performances including Can You Feel The Love Tonight, Don't Go Breakin' My Heart with Kiki Dee, Candle In The Wind, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road with Billy Joel, and other landmark performances.
Disc 2: Live at The Royal Opera House is one of the 2 exclusive concerts highlighted here. The concert has a feel similar to his legendary 1986 live performance in Austrailia with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. This concert film has that same passionate feel. The songs here are just as rich and bold here as if you're in the studio with Elton. The perfformance pays tribute to Gus Dudgeon, Elton's longtime producer who tragically died at the time. The highlights here include great pop songs like Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, Tonight, This Train Don't Stop There Anymore, and his classic Sixty Years On.
Disc 3, is really the radical departure of all of the live performances that Elton John recorded. The performance was recorded at the Great Amhitheatre in Turkey. The live concert only features Elton without a band to backup, or a orchestra. Only by himself. This concert really is very bold and rich enough to show Elton's songs in a different light. The songs here sound much more different on this disc, especially tracks like Philadelphia Freedom, Burn Down The Mission, Crocodile Rock, and Circle Of Life. Yet, on this disc, some of the songs here are also performed more bautifully without any backup, especially tracks like Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, Mona Lisas & Mad Hatters, Sacrifice and Daniel.
The last disc: Elton in Four Decades is a reflection of Elton's career through his 35 years in the spotlight, with rare performances, and music videos finally being released on DVD for the first time. The DVD includes interviews from Elton, several producers and music video directors as well. The collection also includes some great music videos including the black & white masterpiece Believe, Are You Ready For Love, which was recently released as a hit in England, I Want Love, and Elton's first music video, I'm Still Standing.
All in all, Elton John's Dream Ticket is a remarkable DVD collection. Sadly, it really is unfortunate that only Best Buy is able to sell this exclusively, rather than other music and video stores. This is one exciting and dynamic DVD collections ever made, that really is worth it in the purchase and the performances here.

John Fogerty: The Long Road Home in Concert (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Released as a belated tie-in to the recently released Greatest Hits album "The Long Road Home", Fogerty and a top notch band of professionals rock out on this DVD. Having seen Fogerty at the Filmore when he played to promote "Premonition" and that video I found this to be an exceptional concert. I personally liked the "Premonition" DVD better although this one does include material from his last studio album including the single "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" (with a touch of humor it's included twice).
The direction is sharp keeping most of the focus on Fogerty. At 61 John can still belt these classics out and his guitar playing remains top notch (he's also quite good on dobro and slide). I would have liked to see more bonus material in the form of rehearsals or, perhaps, a couple of unusual cover songs that he might have played with the band during sound checks but overall the quality of the DVD is terrific.
Now that John is realigned with Fantasy (Saul Zaentz who went from John's friend to nemesis is gone having sold the company and the company made overtures to reestablish a relationship with its most famous musician)perhaps we'll see his second solo album "John Fogerty" (aka "Shep")released domestically with improved sound and bonus tracks. It would be nice to finally have this underrated classic available with bonus tracks (perhaps the pair of singles John released just before the album was released).
If you don't have "Premonition" or would like to add to your Fogerty live DVD collection (this is only the second offically released live DVD from Fogerty)this is a must have. If you're a CCR/Fogerty fan and want to have him performing the band's best material this is also a must have.

Bruce Springsteen with the Sessions Band: Live In Dublin (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Mix in hot jazz, a bit of gospel, blues, zydeco, bluegrass and country. Season with Bruce Springsteen and bake at high temperature in an Irish oven for what is perhaps the tastiest concert video of 2007.
This is not your anthemic, rock-til-you-drop, Born-in-the-USA Bruce. That energy is still there, but directed here into the American folk songbook, music written between mid 19th to mid 20th century and reflecting the concerns of the agrarian and working class, from the Oklahoma farmer of My Oklahoma Home, to the slave Old Dan Tucker, to African American dock workers of Pay Me My Money Down. This music was appropriated in the 1950's and 60's by politically active singer/songwriters such as Pete Seeger and Bob Dylan, and through them the music comes down to us in the 21st century through Springsteen.
Ten of the songs from the original 2006 Seeger Sessions disc are here, as are a handful of new numbers and songs from the extended Seeger Sessions release (How Can a Poor Man Stand Such Times and Live, When the Saints Go Marching In, This Little Light of Mine, American Land, Long Time Comin'), as well as new arrangements of some of Springsteen's less well-known songs (If I Should Fall Behind, Growing Up, Blinded By the Light, Atlantic City, and Highway Patrolman).
For long time fans the old songs in new-old clothes will be unrecognizable by the opening melody alone. It's not until Bruce starts singing that your mind begins racing to place that particular set of lyrics with a title. All of these newly outfitted tunes show some inventiveness, but the ones that worked best for me were If I Should Fall Behind and Highway Patrolman, quiet performances showcasing the lyrics, and Blinded By the Light, which like it's original rock incarnation is a wild, foot-stomping show closer.
In fact most of this show will have you tapping your feet and signing along. This is a joyous performance, and you can see that the musicians are enjoying themselves as much as the audience. If you have some room in front of your television, clear out that space and get ready to dance.
About the only downside to this release is that it's not a document of one evening, but a compilation of three. In itself that decision was not as critical as the one to delete all on stage banter, including song and band introductions, often one of the more enjoyable parts of any Springsteen show. The editing work is also noticeably poor at times with the action not in sync with the sound, presumably where the director chose to insert shots from nights other than those from which the sound was recorded.
Otherwise, this is a great DVD and watching it was the most fun I've had in front of the television in months.
