(More customer reviews)Rescheduled to October 2, 2001 -- less than a month after the September 11th attacks -- this live event became urgent in a way its organizers probably hadn't planned. For me, it was a profound part of the post-9/11 healing process; I've watched it repeatedly since it originally aired, and it never fails to inspire.
The concert recalls the transcendent messages of a great fallen poet, and is a fitting tribute to his music. The diverse collection of popular musicians and entertainers mirror John Lennon's pure, powerful words and honest expression. As a result, this was one of New York City's best and most-earnest responses to the 9/11 attacks -- far better than the "Concert for New York City" which aired three weeks later, despite the fact that Paul McCartney does not appear here.
Truth be told, a few musical performances are a bit uneven, and the all-star band occasionally overwhelms the vocals... but Kevin Spacey's street-smart hosting skills and his astounding performance of "Mind Games" are not to be missed.
Come Together is an essential contextualizer for anyone who connects with John Lennon's ideals. Given our place and time in history, this concert is a wonderfully sublime guide to the days that lie ahead. Highly recommended.

Good Rockin' Tonight - The Legacy of Sun Records (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm not big on writing negative reviews on things, but I am gonna rain on the parade here a bit.
I was excited about seeing this documentary, quite excited actually. I'm a big fan of the music that came out of Sun Records, but oddly enough I really never read or watched much about the history of the legendary studio. I knew the basic story, but was eager to learn a bit more. Books have been written-which I will get to eventually-but a documentary was too good to pass up.
Well, I learned basically doodly-squat from this 2 hour documentary. The famous Sun artists are briefly introduced and talked about, but are whisked out of the film almost as quickly as they arrive. I know most of these artists can(and do)have their own documentaries, but I would have expected a little more to be said about these people. These people made Sun! Aside from a brief photograph, Roy Orbison isn't even mentioned!
On the good side, the film does devote a lot of time to Billy Lee Riley(RIP) and Sonny Burgess, two excellent artists who's promising careers got shafted. It's nice to see them, listen to their stories, and even see them perform.
Now for the down side. At the time this film was being made, a Sun Records tribute album was being recorded, and it features more contemporary artists covering Sun songs. A big chunk of this documentary comes across as a commercial for this album as it shows numerous musical numbers being done by modern bands(okay, Paul McCartney, Mark Knopfler, Robert Plant and Jimmy Page aren't exactly "contemporary", but many of the bands are). This irritated the hell out of me. Seeing the balls removed from raw, rockin' songs and(some of them)turned into whiny emo crap is frustrating and sad. I had to have the FF button handy at all times, especially when Kid Rock came out rapping. Kid Rock isn't qualified to be a custodian at Sun Records, let alone cover any of their songs. It makes me wonder if half of these bands are truly Sun Records fans or just along for the ride coz they happen to like one or two Johnny Cash songs.
Sorry if I sound bitter, but I am bitter. If you happen to like these reworkings, that's all fine and dandy as they are obviously intended, not only as tributes, but to appeal to a younger generation as well. But I don't see why your age should require a filter to process older music. But I can't say that ALL of the performances were bad, coz they weren't. In all fairness, there were some decent covers. I would have much rather have seen classic performances by the original Sun artists is all.
And of course the main player in this film is Sun founder Sam Phillips, and he's not at a loss for words. He's portrayed as a pioneer but certainly not a saint as he screwed a few of his artists over. He seems to think he's hot poop, but considering the legacy of Sun, it's easy to see why.
I honestly can't recommend this if you're looking for a good documentary on the Sun story, as this is a very abridged version. I don't claim to be an expert on Sun, but I'd hoped the film would have at least put me on the path. Looks like I'll be searching out those books now.

Walnut Creek (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)To respond to the previous viewer, it isn't a coincidence that the band released a show from summer rather than 11/22, or any other date on the fall tour. Summer shows at outdoor amphitheaters usually involve extra video production to feed to those large screens usually beside the stage. You don't get that at Phish's indoor shows.
I won't attempt a song-by-song review since that's so, so subjective. Everyone has not only their favorite songs, but often their favorite arrangements of songs, or their favorite jam elements. Suffice to say that this is easily, very easily, the best performance so far that Phish has released in its entirety - the IT DVD is more of a retrospective than a live show, in my opinion. No disrespect to the folks that enjoy Brooklyn, Vegas, or Woodbury (google it if it's not ringing any bells), but this, at last, is something that captures the band on their game.
And capture the band it does. Because the video is taken from those projection screens, it features many, many close shots. That's the point of those screens - to bring the band members closer. You don't watch a video screen to see the stage show when you've got the actual stage in front of you :) Which is a roundabout way of saying that Kuroda fans may be disappointed. You can sort of get a sense for what was going on . . . but not really. You don't get any lightning shots, and you don't get those fantastic, sweeping crowd shots like those on the IT DVDs.
There's no mistaking the fact that this is a bare bones release. Right down to the bare-bones price. For what you'll pay for this, and what you'll get, it seems ridiculous to complain. And I'm not complaining. This is a 100% must-have release. Just don't expect it to be some grand production. It's a chance to view some very well-preserved stage presentation video, which is a treat in itself, but it obviously wasn't filmed with the intention of releasing it commercially.
My take? Just be glad they did.

Plus the second disc is loaded with features that really give you insight into the band and the making of the DVD itself. One Cold Winter's Night was recorded on February 11th, 2006 atthe historic Rockefeller Musichall in Oslo, Norway. Kamelot enlistedrenowned film and video director Patric Ullaeus to chronicle the night'sevents. Arriving with him from Gothenberg, Sweden, Patric had a large crewof professionals and equipment including 18 cameras that would be used inand around the concert grounds. The title for the band's first DVD (basedon an earlier Kamelot song title) was chosen long before the actual shoot.Ironically this winter turned out to be one of the longest and coldest inthe country's history, with enormous amounts of snow and numerouschaos-causing blizzards. John Prine - Live from Sessions at West 54th (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)John Prine is one of those rare artists who both define and occupy a niche in pop music. I've been a fan of John since the mid-1970's in Chicago, where you could catch Prine and Steve Goodman on a double bill - or just sitting in on each other's acts - at The Quiet Knight for a two drink minimum. His catchy, eclectic and highly personal songs are always interesting and sometimes extraordinary.
But not until this DVD have you been able to catch the spirit of a John Prine concert. I don't know why it has taken so long, but I'm grateful that it is here at last. It's not quite the same as being there, but it's a treat even so.
I bought the DVD after a concert here in Fairbanks, just last week. Except for not having Iris Dement for the cuts from "In Spite of Ourselves" (John sang both parts himself), this DVD captures the spirit, the goofy sincerity and charm, of John Prine very well. The camera work is quite good, the editing is crisp and smooth, and his band, Jason Wilber and David Jacques, are nearly perfect.
Life hasn't treated John all that well. He's had his woman problems ("All the Best" was written for his ex-wife's wedding), his best friend died, he's had a hip transplant and scary brush with cancer. But it hasn't affected his music or his evident joy in life. He seems to live his life and write his music with the message of "Bruised Orange" in mind: "It don't do no good to get angry, believe me, I know."
John Prine fans: this DVD belongs in your collection. You will savor it for years to come. For those who don't know John, get "Souvenirs," his latest CD release, and this DVD, and see what the fuss is all about.
And thanks, John. It was a great concert. It's a great DVD. Keep up the good work.

(More customer reviews)I need not proclaim or laud Hayes for his musical talent or artistic evolution. It is 2008; either one knows of Darren and finds him a genius or, as has been the case with most of my peerage, he's an undiscovered gem. For those in the latter category, this is an *excellent* stone from which to step. On this superbly captured closing night of The Time Machine Tour, Darren Hayes does that which so many of his fans thought wholly impossible: he improves upon perfection.
My advice to you?
Buy this DVD; see the man in all of his glory; build your own time machine (or, if you'd rather, simply put the disc on "repeat") so that you can relive the wonder.

(More customer reviews)This is Janet so of course I had to give this 5 stars and its worth it. If you saw the concert you know its amazing. If you haven't read on. The concert starts off with janet running around the beach and under the waterfall topless and then she enters the stage fully clothed, amazing how does she do it. She plays the songs "If, That's the way love goes, All for you", and more of the classics and the new ones but nothing compares to the stage performance of "Would you mind". She has way out done her performance of "Rope Burn". In "Would you mind" she of course gets a guy out the audience and she puts him on this table specially made for a person that moves around and that's all I can tell you about it. The features are even better. It has a photo gallery, rehearsel, and a series of performances of "Would you mind" around the United States. The only bad thing I have about the DVD is that the crowd in Hawaii were not as wild as the New York crowd. The crowd had their burst of excitement but not full shouting like the New York crowd. The DVD is worth the money, the concert also last way over 2 hours long.

Willie Nelson and Friends - Live & Kickin' (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a strange bird of a DVD. For one thing, it contrasts the problems with watered-down, blown-up, and talent-lacking country music industry of today, with the rich talents of yesterday's country music scene, as well as the wealth of talent in other genres of new and current music. And for another thing, it's very entertaining to see Wyclef Jean freestyle rapping in front of a room full of mortified country fans.

It starts off well enough, with Willie performing an adequate rendition of one of his standards. And one would think a duet with Shania Twain doing "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" would be at least passable. But instead, Shania comes off sounding more like Celine Dion. Willie was completely unable to keep up, due to this very strange, overdone, and bland style of singing. Contrast that to Norah Jones who can sing with Willie incredibly beautifully and works with his style like a musical instrument in of itself. And she isn't even a country singer!

I would also like to know exactly how many Kenny Chesney fans will buy this DVD. The guy looks like a gay porn star. He actually makes me appreciate the originality of Garth Brooks. Sorry Garth, that was a bit cruel. In school one day, a couple of students said they liked country. Our teacher immediately asked "Willie Nelson?" They said "No, he's too old. We like Kenny Chesney!"

Notwithstanding, there are some great songs. When Ray Charles sang "A Song for You," I was crying right along with Willie. The Ray Price songs are fantastic and show Willie still has it after all these years. Paul Simon sings "Homeward Bound" in near perfect duet with Willie, not to mention a great guitar solo via Trigger. And although I may think Toby Keith has about as much charisma as Larry the Cable Guy, "I'll Never Smoke Weed With Willie Again," is thoroughly decent. But an up-beat country song in "Beer for My Horses" about terrorism is downright nauseating and horrifying. We certainly aren't all back at the saloon yet and probably never will be.
As far as the bonus tracks go, one can and cannot see why certain songs were cut. Willie's original opener of Whisky River was somewhat anemic. Kris Kristofferson can be an acquired taste. Sheryl Crow borderlines the same problem Shania has, but her song is pretty good. What was mindboggling was why they cut the other Norah Jones song which was just as outstanding as the one they kept in the show.

Now, finally the greatest specticle of them all. Leon Russell singing "Jumpin' Jack Flash." All the audience and Willie are very confused and don't know what to do. Even Leon seems a little surprised at what's coming out of him. And the biggest shock of all, the song is incredible. It burns the house down. But everybody stands around very uncomfortably. This alone, is worth the price of the DVD. I never thought I would hear a version of the song that would rival the Stones and then see everyone looking at their watches.

The same can be said of the Steven Tyler number. I wasn't even going to watch it, but I had to, just out of morbid curiosity. Going against all logic, reason, even physics, Steven makes a great country singer. He sounds very similar to Janis Joplin. It pains me to think of the missed opportunity of hearing him sing "Me and Bobby McGee" with Kristofferson. All I know now is that if Steven Tyler released a country album, I would certainly buy it and three copies for my friends.

So, all things considered this is a rather fascinating show. Sure, most country fans will give this one listen, complain about the chances it took, praise Twain and Keith, and forget it. But if you look and listen deeper you'll hear a completely original, strange, and satisfying showcase of talent doing what they do best, and sometimes trying something completely new and different.

Celine Dion - All the Way... A Decade of Song & Video (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)"Oh My God!" I couldn't stop watching this DVD once I got it. Celine is so spectacular, and this DVD sure does show it! I love all the old videos, "new" videos, and live performances! Who says teenage guys can't LOVE Celine?
Here's my run-down:
1. Program start: This is just a short "into" clip. About 30 seconds long. Short and sweet.
2. The Power of Love (Music Video):
I may not be "your lady," but I bet after seeing this video, and hearing this song, every guy wants to be Celine's "man." It's so amazing. She hits the high notes perfectly.
3. If You Asked Me To (Music Video):
This may be an old vid, but it's so great! Celine looks so beautiful, and the video made me feel as if I were in a dream. Great job!
4. Misled (Music Video):
Okay, maybe the video was kid of..."so, so." The song has kind of like a "funky" beat to it. Not what we're used to from Celine. But it's something different, and we don't here it all the time. And if it was a single, then it's gotta be good, right? Nice job.
5. Beauty and the Beast (duet with Terry Bradford) [LIVE]:
If it's a Disney song, then ya know it's great! Trust me, this is the song you want to be stuck in your head all day. It's live and from the "Falling Into You" concert, in Memphis. Not bad Celine, not bad at all.
6. Because You Loved Me [LIVE]:
No, it's not the music video. But it's just as good, (maybe even a little better). I LOVE this song. It's so pure. Celine... you know what we want. Thanks.
7. It's All Coming Back To Me Now [Single Version] (Music Video):
Now here's a side of Celine we don't see often. WOW! This video blew me away. So amazing! I loved it from the start till the end. Uh... what can ya say? It's G-R-E-A-T!
8. Love Can Move Mountains (Music Video):
I know everyone loves this song! It just makes you want to get up and dance, and just have a good time. And when you look beyond the fun, it has an outstanding message! Great song, fun video, positive message... what more can you ask for?
9. To Love You More (feat. Taro Hakase) [LIVE]:
A hit not only in Japan, but all over the world! Celine knows what she's doing! This song is amazing, and even features a very special guest! This is a wonderful performance!
10. My Heart Will Go On (Love Theme from Titanic) (Music Video):
Okay! Now you cannot get any bigger than Titanic! Oh, yes you can, just have a hit show in Las Vegas! This video is AMAZING! Celine is sooo beautiful in her dress, and I know everyone's head this song, and I know everyone LOVES it! No matter you are!
11. I'm Your Angel (duet with R. Kelly) (Music Video):
WOW! This is such a pure song, and is just so inspirational! Celine, doing her best as always, and a side of R. Kelly we hardly ever see. Just so heavenly!
12. That's the Way It Is (Music Video):
Seems almost impossible! Celine is so down-to-earth in this video. It's like she's one of us! We all love her, and we'll love her even more after this! I promise!
13. If Walls Could Talk (Music Video):
This is one of my most favorite video of ALL TIME! How can you pass this by! I cried when I saw this video! The setting is so calm and peaceful, Celine looks gorgeous, and song is so soothing! Bravo Celine, bravo!

Ahhh... wonderful. A love song that can't get any better. And only Celine can sing it like Frank Sinatra. This is one of the BEST songs of all time... All the way.

I love it! Celine performs this song, in a way that no other could, or can ever reach! This video is so cool! It has a mystery about it, the kind that makes me get chills every time I see it! Oh gosh! Just spectacular!

This is such a beautiful music video! Is that beach in there real? It looks gorgeous, and... If only I could have been there with Celine. I just adore this video!

This video is sort of like in a dream, that you never want to wake up from. It just absolutely takes you away to a land where everything may just be perfect. This video... better than a dream.

(More customer reviews)The 2003 DVD release HEART: ALIVE IN SEATTLE is one of the best video recordings of a live performance of a rock band, and it is especially impressive when considering that it documents a recent performance from a band that has been playing kick-*ss rock for nearly 30 years (their debut album, DREAMBOAT ANNIE, was released in 1976).
The performance was recorded at the Paramount Theater in Seattle (Heart's hometown) on Aug. 8, 2002, the last gig on the band's 2002 "Summer of Love" tour. The response to the tour was tremendous, with longtime fans and newbies alike enthusiastically welcoming fronters Ann and Nancy Wilson and their new back-up band--an ensemble that includes former Ozzy Osbourne and Alice In Chains bassist Mike Inez and Lovemongers drummer Ben Smith. The tour was so successful, in fact, that they turned right around and toured again in 2003 (the "Alive in America" tour) playing basically the same song set. So fans who missed either or both of those tours can still experience that concert atmosphere vicariously with the HEART: ALIVE IN SEATTLE disc--but with much better "seating"!
The Wilson sisters made an excellent choice for the set list, which includes the band's very popular pre-`80s hard-rock standards like "Crazy on You," "Straight On," "Magic Man," and "Barracuda," as well as some great post-70s tunes such as "Alone" and "These Dreams." In addition, the band does a fantastic job on covers of Led Zeppelin's "Battle of Evermore" and "Black Dog," the Elton John ballad "Mona Lisas and Madhatters," and an old garage-band ditty called "The Witch."
Dark-haired Vocalist Ann Wilson, as beautiful as ever, proves that she still has what it takes to belt out the band's old hard-rock standards, and she still sounds as angelic as ever on the softer melancholy favorites like "Dog and Butterfly" and "Dreamboat Annie." When Heart plays their classic stuff, Ms. Wilson sounds exactly like she did when the songs were first recorded--which is a lot more than you can say for most rock vocalists from the '60s and '70s, who can no longer hit those high notes. But she and sister Nancy (who mainly plays guitar and other strings) also easily keep up with the newer, younger artists when they perform some of their latest compositions like "Heaven," "Sister Wild Rose," and the really cool hard-hitter "Break The Rock." Both women are certainly in top form and prove they can go the distance in the studio and on stage. And with HEART: ALIVE IN SEATTLE, they leave no doubt that they are still two of the most talented and creative women in rock.
The picture quality on this DVD is crisp and clear, with great color saturation and nice contrast, and the cinematographer does a top-notch job of capturing the energy of the artists and the spirit of their performances. The Dolby sound quality is also excellent, and a sound system that takes advantage of the DTS Surround Sound can really make viewers feel like they are at the live performance.
No longtime fan of HEART will be disappointed with HEART: ALIVE IN SEATTLE. And the DVD will certainly give newbies a taste of just how powerful and emotive this band and the talented duo that drives it can be.

Those that haven't and think they know and have heard greatness, you can't even imagine.
Even if one isn't into this genre of music, you owe it to yourself to purchase this DVD and experience some of what so many of us have had the pleasure of for what's approaching now 50 years! I tell you, you will become magnificently enlightened because there's been no other vocalist to date that can come close. Yes, she IS that much better than any other.
You will hear the message in every song, every expression. A message of truth and passion from an artist who must have been inside the heart of every songwriter whose songs she has interpreted through her soul and her magnificent vocal instrument. There can be no other answer to how she is able to convey the depth and meaning of a song, all the while commanding you to listen to the lyrics and feel the meaning the way the composer had intended, and all without you even realizing it. You will find yourself waiting to exhale after every powerful note, but the greatest power is in her ability to deliver a note so softly, so gently, as nearly a whisper--it will leave you breathless. I'm sorry, but you don't need to scream and high-power through every song to show you can sing, like so many today. The true artistry is in the nuances, the subtleties.

(More customer reviews)I swore I would not open this DVD until after seeing L. Cohen in Oakland the Monday after next. But I'm so glad I broke my vow.
This is one of the most wonderful concerts I've ever seen captured on DVD.
The band and Leonard's singers are top-notch, and one senses that they feel as though they are a part of something special.
The songs span nearly 40 years of a canon that is second to none.
Most amazing of all,though, is how a digital disc can cut through its own technology and exude so much warmth and passion. Even when the camera shows a close shot of Cohen, one can still sense the warmth, love and admiration coming from the ecstatic London audience.
As for Leonard Cohen...if he were to do nothing but sing, that would be enough given the wonderful breadth of material performed at this concert.
However, his gentle and gracious command of the stage provides this show an added depth and dimension. Within the span of minutes he can be hilarious, self-deprecating, humble, poignant, appreciative...and I could easily go on with the superlatives to describe his on-stage demeanor.
Very often I make a point of remembering to trust the art and not the artist. In the case of Leonard Cohen, I tend to trust both. His warmth seems genuine. Unlike so many of his stature, his humility comes across as real. His spoken words are every bit as powerful as those that are sung. Given the way that the barriers are broken down between the singer and the band and the audience...to the point where it feels as though they are all part of one celebratory evening...such humility, graciousness and warmth cannot be anything but genuine.
The highlights are too many to mention: "Suzanne" sounds as fresh as it did 40 years ago. "Anthem" sounds more urgent today than when it was first penned. "The Future" & "First We Take Manahattan" are even more biting now in the 21st Century than when they were first penned. Cohen's increased age gives songs such as "Boogie Street," "Tower of Song," & "Democracy" a world weariness that makes these songs all the more penetrating. His lovely "If It Be Your Will" sounds as much like a prayer as it does one of the loveliest songs ever written. If I don't stop now, I'll wind up writing accolades about every song on this DVD. Yes, it is that wonderful!
I've been fortunate to see so many of the greats in my lifetime - legends whose works will be remembered for decades to come. Some have been surly and stand-offish. Others have been appreciative and welcoming toward their audience.
It is refreshing to see the best of everything embodied in this Leonard Cohen concert. Songs that are amongst the best ever written, still performed with a passion (as well as with the added wisdom that comes from Cohen being 74 years young), with a band & audience & singer all equally committed to one another.
There are moments when I laughed out loud at Leonard's deadpan, wry humor. There were times when tears welled in my eyes from the sincerity of the words that came out of his mouth, either spoken or in song.
In a day and age where so much seems packaged and perfunctionary, it is refreshing to see & hear someone such as Cohen whose observations can warm the heart or cut like a knife to get to the heart of a matter. He is the real deal. No airs, no faux modesty...just a man with four decades' worth of majestic material, with an excellent band whose respect for Cohen is reciprocated by their singer with his respect for their talents & abilities, along with a genuine warmth & sense of humanity that allows Leonard Cohen to turn a large London venue into a setting that is as intimate as being in one's living room.
Without a doubt, one of the finest, most moving and most satisfying concert DVDs I've ever seen.
I'm glad that I opened this prior to April 13. Seeing this makes me look forward to seeing Cohen in a small Oakland theater even more so than I already was.
However, had I not been fortunate enough to have gotten a ticket for his upcoming concert, I have to say that this DVD would have been a more than fine consolation. It is worth every cent. The staging, lighting, musicianship, song selection and sound are painstakingly stellar, obviously given great care & much thought.
This is a true gem, a most worthy representation of one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

There are wonderful DVD exclusives.
-Backstage footage, a music video type documentary cut to a remix of "By Your Side". It's a real nice thing to see the band have unity & love beyond the stage.
-Message to Sade, a real hilarious look at Sade fans directed by the Polish Brothers. Sade should come out more often. These people are NUTS! It's a great piece to have on a DVD because it shows how Sade affects her fans & how sincere her fans are.
-B&W photographs, I wish there were more! They should have made a music video with these stills.
-King of Sorrow Video, sexy-sexy-sexy. The best Sade video from Sophie Muller. This alone is worth the DVD.
SADE LOVERS LIVE is a truly a wonderful DVD, Sade embraces her fans and delivers a concert of honesty and respect.

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire: Live at the Greek Theatre (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)Check it OUT~! I purchased this live DVD to watch Chicago take over Los Angeles. I had been to several Chicago concerts through the years and was wondering if Chicago could still reach the high notes.
I have never seen such a pumped-up session by Chicago until they performed with Earth, Wind and Fire. I could see that the baby boom generation (yep, that's me) in the audience were trying to keep up with Chicago and EWF. Bill Champlin and Jason Scheff struggled on many notes, but they looked happy as ever while performing. It was worth every penny to watch them. Jimmy Pankow and the horns, and Tris Imboden and the percussion, gave tremendous performances. My highest accolade goes to Robert Lamm when he comfortably sang `with soul' "Does Anyone Know What Time It Is" with full support from my leading man Verdine White and EWF.
Step it OUT~! I had only heard of Earth, Wind and Fire. The closest I got to their music was hearing the Tomorrow Land Band at Disneyland play the tune "Let's Groove" through the years. I also didn't realize I was that old. :(
The first person I could not avoid from the beginning to the end of the DVD was Verdine White. I stared at disbelief at this absolutely crazed dancer. On the other hand, was he an absolutely crazed bass guitarist? OK, which is it? His attitude from the get-go was "We are the Greatest, You are the Greatest, let's Dance Together and be the Greatest Together!" He hypnotized me. :)
Earth, Wind and Fire is one of the most talented bands in the World, at any level. The singing of Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson is absolutely superb. I was dancing like an absolutely crazed fool on the couches, on the tables and on the walls of my living room (it can be done) trying to keep up with Verdine White. As I was gasping for air, I listened to all the hits of Earth, Wind and Fire for the first time in my life. Over and over again, this band performed each song with class, style and charm. The graceful and talented Ms. Krystal Bailey gave a wonderful performance while trying to maintain Verdine White (who am I kidding).
BUY IT NOW~! You must buy this DVD. You will fly on Fire to the Windy city of Chicago for weeks after you get it. This is one of the most spectacular live performances on DVD. The ambience at the Greek Theatre with the combined sounds of both groups musically sharing their hits together was eclectic. Here is a secret. You have to see Verdine White shake it up with Robert Lamm and Philip Bailey when both groups play "September." When you play this DVD at a party, there will be M A G I C in the room. Let's Groove Together and Don't Care What Time It Is with this DVD. Did I mention that Verdine White is one of the greatest performers in the World? We Wanna Be Free - Peace.

Pink: Funhouse Tour - Live in Australia (2009) Review

Let me start this off by making it clear that I'm not like most others that would be reviewing a Pink cd or concert video.
I am a middle-aged man in my 50s. I'm not exactly her demographic and I'm not a dirty old man either. I'm a retired musician and still make a buck or two as a writer and I wrote Pink off as another of the cookie cutter pop princesses that have littered the music business ever since Madonna first got watered down by Brittany Spears. Then I heard/saw the video for "Don't Let Me Get Me" and realized that she was anything but cookie-cutter. It was her Declaration of Independence from what the music industry wanted her to be. I bought the cd the next day and heard "Family Portrait." From that point on I was a fan. Good music is hard to find and Pink makes some VERY good music.
Now, on to the Blu-Ray concert. It doesn't look like Pink knows what she wants to be when she grows up. The first handful of songs she performs are in the standard diva mode we've seen from hundreds of others from Cher on down. With a big flashy stage and a heavily choreographed dance troupe she bounces and bops through some pretty generic modern dance music. In the midst of this is "Don't Let Me Get Me" and another of her big hits, "Just Like a Pill." Although the original rock arrangement sneaks in here and there the songs are designed to get her target audience of teenaged girls jumping and happy. There isn't anything wrong with any of this section if you're in the age group that likes that sort of thing. Understand, it's just not the sort of thing I'm into. It's also the sole reason I docked the video the 1/2 point in my subject header.
BUT!
No matter how old you are - even if you're an old coot "enduring" this video with your kids or grandkids, DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM. There is an absolutely gorgeous extended piano movement that is placed to allow Pink time for a costume change. When she re-emerges the pianist (who is also the musical conductor) and the violinist join Pink for a slightly altered and riveting version of "Family Portrait." From this point forward you are in for a rare feast to the ears and eyes. There is a very personal acoustic mini-set in which Pink plays several songs dealing with the heartache of the failure of her first marriage. They are sprinkled with some lengthy banter with the audience that is just a touch too long in parts, but the songs themselves are nothing short of gorgeous. The fact that her voice isn't pure and perfectly pitched makes the emotional tone of them all the more vital and real. As a performer myself, I wondered how she was going to be able to transition back into giving her audience more of what they came to see. She does it by a lesser-known Led Zeppelin song that interweaves gentle vocals with sudden explosions of the heavy metal that made the Zep legendary. She handles the very difficult transitions in vocals extremely well, doing Robert Plant proud, disappearing during the final extended solo for another costume change. From that point forward she and the band kick into high gear. As others have mentioned, she does indeed perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" in its entirety only unlike Queen, she and the band remain on stage and sing through the very difficult operatic central section. The song is subtly enhanced with some of Queen's original vocal tracks but the live singers MORE than hold their own. Just when you begin to wonder if Pink isn't human at all, her voice breaks for a brief moment toward the end. She smiles over at the drummer with a brief, "what can you do" look and then finishes the song perfectly. Almost any other performer would have been finished at that point, knowing they'd taken it as far as they could. Pink is literally still getting warmed up.
In addition to kicking up the energy even further, you should keep in mind that Pink also (well harnessed because of insurance requirements) executes a fairly intricate single trapeze act some 25 feet above the floor WHILE SINGING. Although lip synching is rampant amongst female vocalists nowadays, Pink does NONE of it. You can hear her gasping for breath as the songs and athletics progress. She even tosses off a joking threat that she's going to start lip synching so she can do 9 shows a week with matinees.
The lady performs for almost 2 solid hours and never once lets up. Her voice only falters once or twice during the entire night and more than once she performs lengthy acrobatics high above the stage and audience. This is a woman at the absolute peak of her performance capacity and she is one of the few people I've ever seen that could pull a show like this off once, let alone for an entire world tour.
The extra features range from being valuable glimpses behind the scenes to a somewhat silly explanation of the history of "shredding the nar." (Pinkspeak for playing face-melting guitar) Make no mistake. This lady is an artist at a time when most of her contemporaries are either complete studio-enhanced frauds or so self-obsessed with their own talents that they become intolerable. Pink is the real deal and (despite some four-letter language in her lyrics that might make you a little careful viewing the show around small children) this concert video is worth three times what you will pay for it. I don't care if you're a young teen lion or one of the tame and toothless tabby-cat baby boomers, this blu ray concert joins Stop Making Sense and The Last Waltz as one of the three absolute best concert videos on the market. It is a MUST see.
So is Pink a teeny-bop pop icon or a hard-edged rock queen that will help bring back the rock sound that has been dead for well over a decade? I don't think she knows. She shows both personalities at various points in the show.
I'm convinced that she doesn't know what she'll be when she grows up.
After watching her talent, athleticism and musical diversity in this concert I deeply hope she never finds out.
