This slick video of "organ origami" is a hilarious account of Simon Morley & David "Frendy" Friend's act that premiered in Melbourne, Australia. These two well-endowed wonders twist their willys into all sorts of shapes from a hamburger, hot dog, snail, pelican, wind surfer, to the Eiffel Tower and Loch Ness Monster! YOUCH! I bet that smarts! Unabashedly and unshamefully honest, this duo does live on stage, totally naked what some guys only imagine or do behind closed doors. The DVD also includes a "how-to" chapter that illustrates the fine art of genital manipulation. Learn how to do the infamous hamburger, snail, 3 wood, and other wonders of willydom! This is a non-sexual presentation even though there is total male frontal nudity and genital manipulation. Presented in documentary form, this film recounts the story of the origins of the act up to present performances with road companies at major festivals throughout the world. Not for the easily-offended, embarassed, or faint-of-heart, this video is hilarious and leaves you wondering two things: 1.) How'd they do that? & 2.) What are they going to do next? A few re-enactments borrowed from "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert", shows Simon dressed only in a Silver lame cape standing on top of his Combi as Frendy drives through the Australian Outback and him and Frendy standing at the edge of King's Rock au naturel. A true camp classic, a great edition to the collection of rare and unusal DVD's....

(More customer reviews)I need not proclaim or laud Hayes for his musical talent or artistic evolution. It is 2008; either one knows of Darren and finds him a genius or, as has been the case with most of my peerage, he's an undiscovered gem. For those in the latter category, this is an *excellent* stone from which to step. On this superbly captured closing night of The Time Machine Tour, Darren Hayes does that which so many of his fans thought wholly impossible: he improves upon perfection.
My advice to you?
Buy this DVD; see the man in all of his glory; build your own time machine (or, if you'd rather, simply put the disc on "repeat") so that you can relive the wonder.

IMAX: Coral Reef Adventure (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)As a half-century scuba diver who has been diving Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, Moorea and Tiputa Pass in Rangiroa over the years, I can vouch for the authenticity and genuine beauty of this splendid documentary, as well as for the unfortunate reality of the threats to these areas. In particular, we have been diving Fiji's Bligh Waters for years, most often with Rusi Vulakoro (also an excellent singer) who appears prominently in this production. Rusi and Jean-Michel Cousteau demonstrate some of what they are doing to preserve this paradise.
The McGillivray-Freeman production and Michele and photography is top notch, and our friends Rob and Cat, owners of the liveaboard dive boat NAI'A used for the filming, guided Howard and Michele Hall to all our favorite sites - their cinematography is superb, in spite of the major problems faced by using the huge and unwieldy IMAX system. Those interested in scuba diving, some of the world's best dive spots and the state of the ocean will love this DVD - and come away convinced we should never have called this planet, 70.78% of which is covered by the world's oceans and water, "Earth."

Wolf Creek (Unrated Widescreen Edition) (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)As per usual, there have been a great many moronic things said about this movie. Some critics have been offended by it, but don't let that make you think this is some sorta gorefest. The violence is intense and reasonably graphic, but it's certainly not gory in the conventional sense. I find it amusing that those who were offended by the film have more or less said that it was too horrifying, cause ya know, god forbid that someone actually be horrified by a horror movie. They've also said it is misogynistic, just like they've said about every other slasher movie ever. (Slasher movie isn't entirely appropriate for describing this, but it's as good as we'll get.) This is a particularly irritating complaint, first because they always say this, second because it's a bullcrap non-argument evasion intended to avoid any real analysis, and finally because it isn't true. In fact, it's even less true here than it usually is, cause the film doesn't make the killer into the hero. Yes, bad things happen to the women in this film, but we AREN'T supposed to be happy about it. And, of course, very bad things happen to men in the film as well, but who the hell cares about them anyway? Everyone knows that women are much, much more important than men. I also think it's interesting that the killer is a fat, greasy dude from out in the country, as they so often are in this sorta movie, yet it has not been accused of being bigoted against rural people, nor has any horror movie I've ever heard of. What a bizarre coincidence. Wonder why critics don't seem to care about those sorts of people. Maybe they really think that they all are killers. I dunno.
But, critical idiocy aside, this is a very nicely done horror film. The plot is simplicity itself- 3 youths are captured and tormented by a backwoods psychopath while vacationing near Wolf Creek in Australia. Subplots are rarely of interest in slasher films, and 'Wolf Creek' fortunately has none of them. Still, with the very small cast we get to know these characters quite a bit better than we usually would in a slasher film, and they are certainly far more likable than the hot young teens of the American slasher revival. (Of course that doesn't mean much, as said hot young teens are usually loathsome.)
'Wolf Creek' was really made on the cheap, only about 1 million bucks, I hear, and it's certainly got a rough, gritty look. Some people claim that grainy, DV films with handheld cameras are more realistic, which makes precisely no sense as life is not especially grainy, and I tend to hold my head fairly still. However, this technique can allow for a greater sorta intensity and physicality, which works well here. Despite the generally rough visuals, it's still got some rather beautiful cinematography at times, and the great Australian deserts are a fine backdrop for such events.
Yeah, the film does take a while to get going, certainly longer than is necessary, but seriously, are you guys all 3 years old or what? Go out in the lobby and drink your juice and then go potty, and then it'll almost be time for the killing to start. The acting is extremely good for a film with this kinda budget. The 3 leads all do a fine job, with some fairly authentic, if not exactly fascinating, casual banter in the first half of the film. Still, the second half is much more important, and they play it a bit different from most horror films, which is largely why this bothers so many critics. In most horror movies, none of the characters are ever authentically terrified. They're pretty nervous and jumpy and may let out a scream before they die, but they're pretty much in control. Not so here, as Magrath and Morassi spend much of the latter part of the movie in near hysterics, and are utterly convincing, with two of the finest performances of this sort since Marilyn Burns' classic turn in the original 'Texas Chainsaw Massacre'. John Jarrat is also excellent as the killer. They use a trick which is fairly common, in that we are introduced to him as if he were a normal character, who seems amiable enough, if a bit odd, and we then slowly see his violent side revealed. It's an old trick, but a good one, and it works especially well here, aided by his Australian accent, which are always inherently non-threatening to me, for some reason. He does get to be a bit wisecracking at times, but never to the point which he becomes the hero of the film.
Many will say this has an anticlimactic ending, and while I can't help but agree with this to some degree, it's also kind of interesting in that it is so different from what you'd usually see in this sorta film. The small cast also makes it quite a bit less predictable, as most slasher movies have the few central characters who will obviously survive, along with plenty of cannon fodder. With only 3 main characters there just aren't enough people to allow any meaningless little kills stuffed in at the beginning, and it's tougher to predict the order in which they will be offed.
Though I'm sure many of you are sick of hearing this, `Wolf Creek' really is a throwback to the more intense horror films of the 70's like `The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' and `The Hills Have Eyes'. It's got an intensity and seriousness that is almost inevitably lacking from later slasher movies, and the old rough and violent feeling. As such, it certainly isn't for everyone, as many people seem to only like gentle, feel-good horror or conventional gorefests. But, it you've got a taste for something darker and more intense, `Wolf Creek' is definitely worth a look.
Grade: A- (This is after watching it again on DVD, and determining that it was even better than I'd thought initially. I'd change the rating to a 5, if I could.)

Pink: Funhouse Tour - Live in Australia (2009) Review

Let me start this off by making it clear that I'm not like most others that would be reviewing a Pink cd or concert video.
I am a middle-aged man in my 50s. I'm not exactly her demographic and I'm not a dirty old man either. I'm a retired musician and still make a buck or two as a writer and I wrote Pink off as another of the cookie cutter pop princesses that have littered the music business ever since Madonna first got watered down by Brittany Spears. Then I heard/saw the video for "Don't Let Me Get Me" and realized that she was anything but cookie-cutter. It was her Declaration of Independence from what the music industry wanted her to be. I bought the cd the next day and heard "Family Portrait." From that point on I was a fan. Good music is hard to find and Pink makes some VERY good music.
Now, on to the Blu-Ray concert. It doesn't look like Pink knows what she wants to be when she grows up. The first handful of songs she performs are in the standard diva mode we've seen from hundreds of others from Cher on down. With a big flashy stage and a heavily choreographed dance troupe she bounces and bops through some pretty generic modern dance music. In the midst of this is "Don't Let Me Get Me" and another of her big hits, "Just Like a Pill." Although the original rock arrangement sneaks in here and there the songs are designed to get her target audience of teenaged girls jumping and happy. There isn't anything wrong with any of this section if you're in the age group that likes that sort of thing. Understand, it's just not the sort of thing I'm into. It's also the sole reason I docked the video the 1/2 point in my subject header.
BUT!
No matter how old you are - even if you're an old coot "enduring" this video with your kids or grandkids, DO NOT LEAVE THE ROOM. There is an absolutely gorgeous extended piano movement that is placed to allow Pink time for a costume change. When she re-emerges the pianist (who is also the musical conductor) and the violinist join Pink for a slightly altered and riveting version of "Family Portrait." From this point forward you are in for a rare feast to the ears and eyes. There is a very personal acoustic mini-set in which Pink plays several songs dealing with the heartache of the failure of her first marriage. They are sprinkled with some lengthy banter with the audience that is just a touch too long in parts, but the songs themselves are nothing short of gorgeous. The fact that her voice isn't pure and perfectly pitched makes the emotional tone of them all the more vital and real. As a performer myself, I wondered how she was going to be able to transition back into giving her audience more of what they came to see. She does it by a lesser-known Led Zeppelin song that interweaves gentle vocals with sudden explosions of the heavy metal that made the Zep legendary. She handles the very difficult transitions in vocals extremely well, doing Robert Plant proud, disappearing during the final extended solo for another costume change. From that point forward she and the band kick into high gear. As others have mentioned, she does indeed perform "Bohemian Rhapsody" in its entirety only unlike Queen, she and the band remain on stage and sing through the very difficult operatic central section. The song is subtly enhanced with some of Queen's original vocal tracks but the live singers MORE than hold their own. Just when you begin to wonder if Pink isn't human at all, her voice breaks for a brief moment toward the end. She smiles over at the drummer with a brief, "what can you do" look and then finishes the song perfectly. Almost any other performer would have been finished at that point, knowing they'd taken it as far as they could. Pink is literally still getting warmed up.
In addition to kicking up the energy even further, you should keep in mind that Pink also (well harnessed because of insurance requirements) executes a fairly intricate single trapeze act some 25 feet above the floor WHILE SINGING. Although lip synching is rampant amongst female vocalists nowadays, Pink does NONE of it. You can hear her gasping for breath as the songs and athletics progress. She even tosses off a joking threat that she's going to start lip synching so she can do 9 shows a week with matinees.
The lady performs for almost 2 solid hours and never once lets up. Her voice only falters once or twice during the entire night and more than once she performs lengthy acrobatics high above the stage and audience. This is a woman at the absolute peak of her performance capacity and she is one of the few people I've ever seen that could pull a show like this off once, let alone for an entire world tour.
The extra features range from being valuable glimpses behind the scenes to a somewhat silly explanation of the history of "shredding the nar." (Pinkspeak for playing face-melting guitar) Make no mistake. This lady is an artist at a time when most of her contemporaries are either complete studio-enhanced frauds or so self-obsessed with their own talents that they become intolerable. Pink is the real deal and (despite some four-letter language in her lyrics that might make you a little careful viewing the show around small children) this concert video is worth three times what you will pay for it. I don't care if you're a young teen lion or one of the tame and toothless tabby-cat baby boomers, this blu ray concert joins Stop Making Sense and The Last Waltz as one of the three absolute best concert videos on the market. It is a MUST see.
So is Pink a teeny-bop pop icon or a hard-edged rock queen that will help bring back the rock sound that has been dead for well over a decade? I don't think she knows. She shows both personalities at various points in the show.
I'm convinced that she doesn't know what she'll be when she grows up.
After watching her talent, athleticism and musical diversity in this concert I deeply hope she never finds out.

Summer Heights High (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Australia has given us some excellent character actors: script-ripping stagemen who can become larger than life caricatures. Think Crocodile Dundee, or -- better yet -- Dame Edna.
But Chris Lilley has come along and surpassed them all. Indeed, his versatility and roaringly off-putting humour surpasses any of the dark humour in 'Little Britain' or other such countrywide satires.
Now we in North America can enjoy 'Summer Heights High', one of the truly wicked and funny send-ups of a secondary school mini-universe, its cliques, turf wars, and teachers (who are barely more mature than the students).
'Summer Heights High' deserves proper sequential viewing -- one cannot simply dive into a later episode and acquire the plot. Lilley's immense talent for character-forming deserves close attention and patience as he lays down, through improvisation, innuendo, and sheer brilliance for skit acting, three distinct narratives (which amazingly never cross paths) in a suburban Australian school. Details of these three personas which he takes on can be found widely, so I won't repeat the background stories here. I just want to state that Lilley's ability to assume different characters is positively uncanny. I mean, uncanny. Take an excellent method actor and combine it with a razor mouthed pirrahna of improv and quick-thinking, and you get a sense of just how kooky and unpredictable Lilley is.
For my money, it surpasses the muti-headed hydra pranks of Cohen (of 'Borat' fame). Because Lilley can deliver sinister and scathing satire on racism, drugs, and just about every other taboo -- but just when you wonder if he's a nihilist, out comes a breathtaking moment of magnificent spirit and heart. The final scenes involving Jonah Takalua are simply headshakingly good, without any hint of that 'very special moment' that usually mars most dramas supposedly about teens.
Chris Lilley, you're brilliant, mate.

Australia (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I love Howard Hawks' films...Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, Red River, and Rio Bravo are amazing pieces of entertainment. As I was watching Australia, the new Baz Luhrmann movie with Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman, I kept thinking...man, Baz must really love Hawks' movies, too.
As evidenced by the films above, the mismatched couple who fight and fight until they realize they're perfect for each other (see Much Ado About Nothing, Taming of the Shrew, and Moonlighting as other examples of the form) and the group of underestimated misfits who come together to fight evil are two big elements used again and again by Hawks. Throw in a bit of John Ford's The Searchers and its hard look at racism leading to inhuman deeds and mix well and you have...Australia.
The problem modern audiences may have with Luhrmann's new movie is it's very, very earnest. This is straight ahead epic storytelling with its heart on its sleeve and hat and boots with never a wink to the crowd in the theater to say "ain't these people quaint". You either buy in or you don't. If you do, like I did, you're in for a hell of a ride.
This, I feel, is the flip-side to The Dark Knight. Good and evil are trapped in something akin to a battle and an embrace in Nolan's Gotham City. You root for Batman, but he does stuff that is on the wrong side of freedom and civil rights. The Joker is pure crazy, but he's the most mesmerizing character in the film. In Australia, there are good guys and bad guys and you are either really good or twirl your mustache evil. The main villain actually may be a bit too two-dimensional in that aspect, but it didn't hurt my overall enjoyment.
Why? Well, epic melodrama is hard to pull off...I'm talking about the real stuff here. The recent BBC production of Bleak House is a great example. There are very good and very, very bad people in that story, but the acting is so fantastic you rarely if ever catch yourself rolling your eyes (like whenever I've watched Smallville...see: bad epic melodrama). Kidman and Jackman sell their characters...the displaced Englishwoman and the rough-hewn "Drover". They are thrown together just to, initially it seems, thwart a nasty cattle baron from monopolizing the beef industry in the country. But the other big story, the main one in fact, centers around Australia's "lost generation". These were Aboriginal children who were fathered by white men who didn't claim them. They were taken by the government, the mothers had no rights, and handed over to the church to be taught to "act white" and then work in the servant class. Nullah, played by the fantastic child actor Brandon Walters, is one of these "creamies" who has been hidden on the ranch now owned by Lady Sarah Ashley (Kidman). Lady Ashley discovers what is going on, is horrified by the law, and works to keep him hidden as well. Why the Drover cares so much about Nullah becomes clear later in the film (no, it's not what you think...that would be too easy) and Jackman's experience with stage and musical work does him proud here. He can do earnest better than almost any actor alive when he needs to and his later use of the f-word (the only curse I can remember from the entire film) hits so hard, in just the right emotional moment, that it kills. Russell Crowe was originally cast as the Drover but backed out. If Crowe had done the film, and I have liked him in other things...the Napoleon-era British navy film that I can't remember the name of right now, it would not have worked. Crowe never loses that bit of edge and the Drover, at one point, really has to fully break down and become completely vulnerable. Jackman shines at that point.
Anyway...a warning, the movie is long 2 hours and 40something minutes, but I didn't realize that until I had left the theater. I saw it alone...I was out of town at a pediatrics meeting...and that's a good thing. I didn't have to hide from Holly the few times the movie hit me a bit too hard and do that cough-throat clearing thing we dudes do to cover up a stray tear.

(More customer reviews)I caught this series in the middle of series 2. I watched it to the end of series 3, when WE stopped carrying it.
I purchase series 1 from amazon, and it is very good, because it is about the girls and the ranch and daily travails.
Later in the series, boyfriends and whatnot intrude and it becomes more complicated. I am hoping to buy series 4 someday, but it is being released very slowly. They are finished with series 7 in Australia, so we are behind.
Highly recommended for moms, daughters, and anybody who loves Australia.

(More customer reviews)I have to say I was a bit dissapointed with season 4. This doesn't mean I didn't watch or enjoy it, but the show really is not the same without you know who.
Like a good book you can hardly put down, I couldn't wait to find 39 minutes to fit in an episode of McLeod's Daughters from Seasons 1-3. (My mother loaned me all three seasons at once, talking about starting an addiction and feeding it at the same time!!!) Anyway, I got through the first three seasons at a ridiculous pace.
Then came season 4. It started off kind of wierd (after the ending of season 3, you know...). But...I did enjoy it. However, with season four I was not obsessing over when I'd be able to fit in the next episode in, or having an eight episode marathon Saturday. It just wasn't that captivating.
One thing that is odd, Drover's run just doesn't seem to be on the financial brink at all times in season 4. There used to be talk of bills, or payments, or sales, or contracts on practically every episode of seasons 1-3, all of a sudden in Season 4 financial problems are mentioned only once in a blue moon.
I have pre ordered season 5, and will probably order every season and watch till season 8. However, there was no way i could give this 5 stars, after giving seasons 1-3 5 stars. It is still a great show, and we've got nothing like it on American tv, but it's not as good as before.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this latest season of McLeod's Daughters as a gift. This is not a well known series in America, rather it is an Australian made series. My friend used to watch this on one of the cable channels here until it was canceled in the USA. I located seasons 1-6 on eBay for a steal and then this Christmas I found season 7 right when it went on sale on Amazon. If you are looking for a new epic series that will keep you entertained, this may be one to take a look at. My friend swears by it, and she has gotten a few of her friends hooked on it as well.

(More customer reviews)PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS was an unexpected hot ticket in London and New York--a fifty minute comedy act that involves to two men who give a new meaning to the phrase "show and tell" by stripping buck naked and twisting their genitalia into, well, object d'art. So to speak. And this DVD offers the show before a live audience, so you can sit in on the twisting and pulling in an up-close and personal sort of way.
This sounds a lot more bizarre than it really is, as any man who ever spent part of their teenage years in the highschool locker room can tell you. Yes: it really is teenage boy humor, and Austrailian comics Simon Morley and David Friend have snatched it out of the locker room and plunked it on stage for all the world to see. There's "the boomerang," "the eye," "the Loch Ness Monster," "the baby bird," and a host of other penis impersonations--all of which are good for a giggle and some of which are downright hilarious.
Although the show is done in the nude, it isn't in the least erotic, so if that's what you're looking for you had better go some where else. And in truth, this is a show that probably works much better on stage, where there it no doubt has an "in your face" factor that leads the audience to embarrassed hilarity--and indeed, the camera spends almost as much time on audience reaction as on the performers.
Now, this is never going to make any one's short list of "must own live comedy shows." After all, the material will only stretch so far... but taken in the right spirit, it is quite amusing, and it might be the perfect video for that next party you're thinking about giving--just imagine the possibilities! The DVD package also includes a documentary on the creation of a second PUPPETRY OF THE PENIS performing company, which is also amusing in a bizarre sort of way, and a small booklet that will let viewers follow along at home if they are so inclined. An entertaining bit of fluff.

(More customer reviews)I very much enjoyed Season 6. I was so dissapointed with season 5 (i gave it only 2 stars) because it seemed very soap-opera-ish. And I really thought it would all go downhill from there. However, I still wanted to get season 6 but didn't want to wait till it came out in the US, so I got a hold of an AU region 4 copy. I also found season 6 on youtube, and it was so good I had already watched a third of the season on youtube before my copy came in the mail. I just couldn't help myself.
If you are a Mcleod's fan, this was definitely a great season. As I said in my Season 5 review, the show is getting to be more about the people on the show than the running of the farm, but that is ok because this season there were many interesting twists and turns in the plot. the Nick/Tess thing, the Jodi/Matt thing, I don't want to say too much other than it was a great season and definitely worth the price to add it to your McLeod's collection.

(More customer reviews)This is U2 at their creative highpoint. Zoo TV was far ahead of it's time, and is captured very well on this release. Disc 1 is the same as the 1994 VHS release. The video has been cleaned up to todays DVD standards, and is worth getting for that alone. However, the sound has been upgraded as well, and will not disappoint.
The sound is available in Dolby Digital 2.0, Dolby
Digital 5.1, and DTS.
Extra Disc:
'Tryin' To Throw Your Arms Around The World' (4:19) is an edit of several concerts from the ZooTV Tour.
Bonus track 2 is 'Desire' (5:18) from the well-known 'Zoo TV Special' filmed in New York's Yankee Stadium, recorded to promote the ZooTV-Tour.
The Fly' (4:37) and 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' (4:23) are recordings from the Stop Sellafield Concert from 19 June 1992 in Manchester. Both songs have only recently been released on the single for 'City Of Blinding Lights'.
Documentaries:
'A Fistful of Zoo TV' (7:50) is an edit of various scenes from the ZooTV era, while a text tracker informs about the materials used for the stage, PA and
so on. Brief snippets of Mr. MacPhisto are included in the mix, as well as a reference to the ZooTV Confessionals, which are another extra on the DVD.

While you are in the Main Menu on the second disc,
move the cursor onto "Extras".
Using the arrow keys on your DVD remote press "right" once (nothing will
happen) and then press "down" once.
This highlights the ZOOTV logo at the top of the tower.
Hit "enter" on your remote and it will take you to a screen with ABORT
written on it.
Slowly hit the numbers 2, 7, 1, 1 using your DVD remote (make sure your
pause between each number) and the egg will start. (27/11 was the day of the show: Nov. 23rd)
This egg shows the assembling of the ZOOTV stage/the show/and taking down

Rain Shadow: Series One (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Six episodes are not enough. It's that good. The views of the rain shadow country alone make the viewer desire to experience the ruggedness, even overcome the hardships. This Australian drama was filmed in southern Australia, rain shadow country. A rain shadow is an arid region on the lee side of mountains allowing little rain to cross, like Nevada. It creates a setting as tough, as desperate, and as determined as the veterinarian Kate McDonald living in fictional Paringa.
Dr. Kate (widowed 10 years) is played by Rachel Ward. Ward turns from her more recent directing and writing activities to lead the cast with her superb acting portrayal of a woman who has taken charge of her life caught up in extreme harshness located an arid region and a struggling community. Driving into Paringa, is the newest arrival in a long string of attempts to secure an assistant, in the person of Dr. Jill Blake (Victoria Thaine). Her own extraordinary performance adds to the off-again, on-again, personal and professional relationship between the two vets that have a community animal health situation to deal with as well as their own secret lives. It's a powerful combination as intriguing as the interacting lives of the rest of Paringa's citizens.
Move aside, James Herriot, make room, as Rain Shadow has rekindled interest in a country veterinarian's life. Dr. Jill is new, not nearly as tough as Dr. Kate McDonald--YET! And the viewer is as confused about the history and personality exchanges of Paringa as Jill. The community seems to have it's own definitions for integrity and law. For example Larry Riley's (Gary Sweet) unexplained wealth in a struggling location. And, why were so many other newly arriving vet assistants driven off so fast?
This is a contemporary wild country, gritty, survival-of-the-fittest story; not altogether unlike some old tales of the US Wild West. Rain Shadow is gripping drama that, although it ends satisfactorily, it leaves itself open for a reunion and an additional series. Hopefully writers Tony Morphett and Jimmy Thomson will comply. I for one would like to spend another six hours with the lady vets' adventures.
Viewing ladies will like the assertiveness (to the point of big, bad, boldness) of the pair of female Paringa vets. Men will wonder if they would have the fortitude to stick it out, like the courageous young and old men of the Rain Shadow. At what lengths would you go? At what point of endurance would you fold it in? IN REALITY, how much longer can you wait to see this stunning story of those determined to live through the drought, persevere, and conquer the outback?
Each of the 6 episodes of Rain Shadow is equal to a 5-star movie.

(More customer reviews)McLeod's Daughters is an Australian soap opera that has played on WE (Women's Entertainment) TV for the last couple of years up until a few months ago when they decided to discontinue showing it. It is now at the end of its 6th season in Australia and WE had played seasons 1-3. Of course, being a soap opera, it is addictive, and not being able to watch the rest of the seasons is killing a lot of the fans who don't have region free DVD players (or $80 to fork over per season).
The plot at the beginning of the first season is basically two half-sisters (Claire and Tess) who have lived apart for most of their lives (same father, different mothers) come together to save Claire's ranch after their father dies. Claire has lived on the ranch all her life and Tess has lived in the big city with her mother most of her life. Tess, being from the big city, is not too keen on living on a ranch, but she helps her sister, and ends up staying at the ranch to help run it.
Along with the sisters there are other characters who liven up the place, as only soap opera characters can do. There's the two brothers, Alex and Nick, who help run their nearby ranch and who become love interests for just about any girl who is on the show. There's Meg, and her wild daughter Jodi, who help at the ranch. Another ranch help, Becky, who has a troubled past, but is a hard worker. And Terry, a ranch hand at Alex and Nick's ranch, who has an on-again, off-again, relationship with Meg. There are other regulars who have come and gone over the course of the six seasons, but those are most of the main ones from season 1.
The actors in this series are very good, and as we all know, many famous, well-renowned actors have started on soap operas. If they have been in anything else in the U.S. I don't know about it, but as far as I can tell from IMdB, most of them have been in a lot of Australian productions. Recently, John Jarrett, who plays Terry, was in the movie Wolf Creek. His portrayal in that movie was totally different than his role on McLeod's Daughters. It shows he has quite an acting range.
It is nice to finally have this fine and addictive series available in our region for a reasonable price.
