(More customer reviews)I need not proclaim or laud Hayes for his musical talent or artistic evolution. It is 2008; either one knows of Darren and finds him a genius or, as has been the case with most of my peerage, he's an undiscovered gem. For those in the latter category, this is an *excellent* stone from which to step. On this superbly captured closing night of The Time Machine Tour, Darren Hayes does that which so many of his fans thought wholly impossible: he improves upon perfection.
My advice to you?
Buy this DVD; see the man in all of his glory; build your own time machine (or, if you'd rather, simply put the disc on "repeat") so that you can relive the wonder.

Bowie and Peter Gabriel made the blueprint for this type of rock theatre and although it sounds morbid, doing a show like this was one of my before I die wishes. I simply had to do something like this once in my life and I couldn t think of a better moment than this period to try'', Hayes said.Costume design stitched by makers from the Royal Shakespeare Company and set pieces by the folks who put U2 in a Lemon and George Michael in front of the largest video screen ever built the show was a spectacle that had to be seen to be believed.

IMAX: Coral Reef Adventure (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)As a half-century scuba diver who has been diving Fiji, the Great Barrier Reef, Moorea and Tiputa Pass in Rangiroa over the years, I can vouch for the authenticity and genuine beauty of this splendid documentary, as well as for the unfortunate reality of the threats to these areas. In particular, we have been diving Fiji's Bligh Waters for years, most often with Rusi Vulakoro (also an excellent singer) who appears prominently in this production. Rusi and Jean-Michel Cousteau demonstrate some of what they are doing to preserve this paradise.
The McGillivray-Freeman production and Michele and photography is top notch, and our friends Rob and Cat, owners of the liveaboard dive boat NAI'A used for the filming, guided Howard and Michele Hall to all our favorite sites - their cinematography is superb, in spite of the major problems faced by using the huge and unwieldy IMAX system. Those interested in scuba diving, some of the world's best dive spots and the state of the ocean will love this DVD - and come away convinced we should never have called this planet, 70.78% of which is covered by the world's oceans and water, "Earth."

One Tree Hill: The Complete Fifth Season (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been an avid viewer of "One Tree Hill" since the very first episode. I started watching the show as a replacement to the great "Dawson's Creek" (which ended several months prior to the release of Tree Hill), but I wasn't hooked for almost the entire first season. But then in the second season the writing got sharper (and franky more "out there,") the cast gelled together, and the rest is more or less television history. But to be perfectly honest this show should not have been the hit that it has become. But there is just something about watching these 6 teenagers live out the lives of adult, while the amazing dialogue that captures people and refuses to let go.
As a DVD reviewer once said: "High School Dramas are not made for high schoolers, they are made for the people that didn't have the high school experience they wanted." And "One Tree Hill" is the epoch of this discussion. And this is what makes the fifth season so special. After focusing on the groups High School years from seasons 1 thru 4, Season 5 fast-forwards the action 5 years, with all the kids living their own lives, much seperated (and grown up) from their 18-year-old alter-egos.
Whereas many believe the show would have out-right failed had season 5 progressed into the groups various freshman year of college experiences, it instead shines. The cast is allowed to play their own ages, and the viewers are able to see what happens when the real world comes into play. Every character has learned the harsh lessons that come with college and finally moving away from your parents/home town. The characters have finally learned how life can be without a security blanket. But alas I don't want to give away too much.
The start of season 5 finds Brooks as a very famous and wealthy fashion designer, Peyton as a struggeling record assistant, Lucas as a writer turned basketball coach, Haley starting her first year of Teaching English, and Nathan realing from a crippeling accident. But as fate (and the television producing gods) would have it, within three episodes the entire cast is back in Tree Hill for various reasons, and the series begins to progress from there.
The fifth season DVD include all 18 episodes from the strike-shortened season that aired from January until June 2008 (including the 100th Episode), with Unaired Scenes, Three Featurettes (one focusing on the 4 year jump, another on the 100th episode, and an other on the music), two episode commentaries (the season premier & 100th Episode), a gag reel, as well as a digital copy of each episode to watch on your computer/IPod. The episodes are spread across 5 discs and are presented in 1.78:1 Widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround sound.

Jane Goodall's When Animals Talk (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a wonderful documentary about animal communication. It tells the anecdotes of pet owners and others who have managed to communicate with animals, as well as the amazing abilities of those animals. Even for those of us who already understand that animals can communicate, this film is a powerful reminder of how much we do not know about animals and how much we have yet to learn from them.
One of the most amazing studies was with dogs who had the ability to sense tumors. The dogs accurately identified which tissue sample out of seven had cancer over 95% of the time. The dogs even correctly indicated that a tissue sample from a supposedly healthy patient did have cancer. Since the doctors had cleared that particular patient, the dogs probably saved his life.
Another great scene involved a Grey Parrot who not only talked, but conversed. He seemed to understand what to say to people at certain times and had garnered a vocabulary of over 1,000 words. Upon meeting Jane Goodall, he even asked her if she brought any chimps (and subsequently made chimpanzee grunts).
As with many documentaries of this nature, I found this to be a bit too short and sometimes too much filler (too many dog owners saying how much they love their pets). However, don't let that discourage you - there's still a lot to learn from this documentary.

The Shield - The Complete Fourth Season (2002) Review

As the fourth season opens, the Farmington precinct meets their new captain in Monica Rawling (Glenn Close), and it's not long before she makes herself noticed. With Aceveda (Benito Martinez) on his way to political office, Rawling makes her presence felt re-organizing the force with Vic as her right hand man, and they both put their sights on charismatic drug dealer Antwan Mitchell (Anthony Anderson). In the meantime, Vic's ex-partner Shane (Walt Goggins) works vice, and gets in way too deep with Mitchell, which leads to the reformation of the strike team in an effort to save Shane, and themselves, before it's too late. Sub-plots throughout the season include Aceveda discovering a dark side he never knew he had, Julian (Michael Jace) looking to be transfered as he opposes Rawling's approach to the seizures, and Dutch (Jay Karnes) finding romance with Vic's ex-wife (Cathy Cahlin Ryan) while trying to get both his partner (CCH Pounder) and himself out of the doghouse with the DA. Many agree that the third season was a step down compared to the landmark first two, and the fourth season delivers firing on all cylinders. Glenn Close is perfect casting as the no-nonsense new captain, while Michael Chiklis is excellent as always as crooked cop Mackey, who this season, appears to be searching for redemption. The Shield is back on track, and it's once again the best original drama on cable TV. By the end of the season, there is a big change for all the main players, and it will leave you salivating for what's coming next.

The Whitest Kids U' Know: The Complete Second Season (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I recently ordered this on Amazon and I am currently awaiting its arrival via UPS this afternoon. I became a Whitest Kids fan immediately after I caught an episode on Netflix. From that moment on, I have been watching any and every episode that I can get my hands on. I am glad to see that IFC is not afraid to let a cutting edge comedy show try to be bold and daring. I have seen every episode available of Instant Watch on Netflix, but I will re-watch Season 2 again when it arrives. I high recommend this to people who like bold and often times cringe inducing humor. If you have ever enjoyed shock jock radio then this is a must see.

Resurrection Blvd - The First Complete Season (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)This outstanding series gives PBS's "American Family" a run for its money as the finest series about a typical, all-American family. Superbly acted across the board, from proud, tough-love Patriarch Roberto (the excellent Tony Plana), struggling sister-in-law Bibi (Elizabeth Pena - why isn't this woman a star?) and her loving son Tommy (the underrated Douglas Spain) to always-reliable veterans Rita Moreno and Glynn Turman... this series strikes gold on all counts, from the fine acting and directing to the smart scripts and warm designs. Let's hope Paramount resurrects seasons two and three on DVD in the not-too-distant-future. It's impossible not to fall in love with these characters. Bravo!

Masters of Horror: Dance of the Dead (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Fans of SF or horror who can wrap their heads around stories (and the films based on them) like Orwell's 1984 and Burgess' A CLOCKWORK ORANGE, who understand that such stories are meant as cautionary comments on contemporary society more than they are predictions, will appreciate Tobe Hooper's nihilistic "Dance of the Dead," the auteur's first-season entry for Showtime's MASTERS OF HORROR series. Hooper updates those classic cautionary tales to give the world a fresh glimpse into the post-apocalyptic future, this time through a computer-age lens tinted with goth and punk sensibilities.
Hooper's tight and visionary direction is supported by the outstanding cast and crew. Portraying Peggy, the audience's window into the grim future, beautiful Jessica Lowndes exudes unvitiated innocence as her character's eyes are newly opened to the reality of her world. Actor Jonathan Tucker is perfect as Jak, a brooding, introspective black-marketeer who struggles with guilt over the questionable ethics of his vocation. And horror icon Robert Englund's delightfully over-the-top performance as a grizzled, cynical nightclub MC--a sort of post-apocalyptic re-interpretation of Joel Grey's performance in CABARET (1972)--is itself worth the price of Anchor Bay's DVD. The script by Richard Christian Matheson, based on a short story by his famous father, is a literate, frighteningly nihilistic speculation on the post-nine-eleven possibilities that threaten our world. And the frenetic, multi-layered cinematography of Jon Joffin (enhanced by Andrew Cohen's the top-notch editing) perfectly complements the horrific, chaotic atmosphere and lifestyle of the potential future Hooper here depicts.
Any moviegoer who comprehends and enjoys SF-based horror will certainly come away satisfied after watching "Dance of the Dead." While not necessarily the best entry from the first season of MASTERS OF HORROR, it is a great mini-movie nonetheless, and it proves that director Tobe Hooper is, indeed, a master of the genre.
The excellent DVD from Anchor Bay is well worth the price of admission. It offers a pristine digital anamorphic transfer of the flick in its original aspect ratio of 1.77:1. In addition, there are over three hours of cool extras, including two commentary tracks (one featuring director Hooper and one with scripter Matheson), interviews with Tobe Hooper and the main actors, a behind-the-scenes featurette, and more! A fine addition to the film collection of any SF or horror fan.

Clatterford: The Complete Season One (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I saw the English broadcast of this series and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a heartwarming view of small village life complete with all of the quirky types of characters you might expect. Think Calendar Girls, with its focus on the local Women's Institute (called the Women's Guild in Clatterford). I read one review that aptly compared it to Northern Exposure. The BBC has done the series as much harm as good by promoting it as "by the creator of Absolutely Fabulous," Jennifer Saunders. This is not AbFab and one shouldn't expect anything like that. But Jennifer Saunders continues to be a master at taking common events, situations, or conversations and embellishing them to the brink of absurdity. This series can provide plenty of smiles, but don't expect hilarity. It wasn't written that way.

Welcome to Clatterford, a small town big enough to have a good cross section of people, local shops and a late night convenience store. It's also small enough where everyone knows everybody's business but doesn't talk about it unless asked. Cue the Women's Guild, who aren't afraid to ask. Their topical meetings -- ranging from 'How to solve world poverty' one week to 'the benefits of using marrow in jam' the next -- are the center of village life, like it or not.

The Anna Nicole Show - The First Season (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)If you're an Anna Nicole Smith Fan, the Anna Nicole Show season 1 is a must own! It really shows Anna at her finest. It has an eating competition between Kimmie, Daniel, Howard & Anna; The infamous Bobby Trendy who designed her bedroom; Howard K. Stern dressed up as Bobby Trendy - my personal favorite; and an extra Christmas special that has Chyna Dolla, Kathy Griffin, Anna's cousin Shelly from Mexia, TX and even Anna Nicole's driving instructor from a previous episode. It even shows Anna's softer side where she invites over 30 underpriveleaged young girls into her home & went swimming with them, painted with them and just hung out with them like a normal loving person. Anna was a great and amazing beauty who died far too young. This is a great way to remember her, even though this was filmed in her heavier days, she was still comfortable in her own skin and showed how much she loved life and having fun.
