Joe Rogan Live (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Joe Rogan, best known as the host of the outrageous reality show Fear Factor, also happens to be a damn fine comedian. In his own words he confesses that probably only 10% of his fans know him from standup, and that the other 90% know him only as the host of Fear Factor.
This doesn't stop Rogan from speaking his mind for 55 minutes in a filmed standup show on a small stage in the Tempe Improv comedy club in Tempe, Arizona. And this doesn't stop Rogan from being jaw-droppingly, gaspingly hilarious. Like a more honest, more dangerous version of Dane Cook, or a testosterone-addled David Cross, Rogan takes the stage with a manic energy and an incredibly quick (and gloriously offensive) wit.
Rogan addresses the Fear Factor fame quickly in order to clear the air. Covering such topics as the story of Noah's Ark, the three magic words in the English language, the proliferation of dumb people, and an interesting solution to the war on terror that involves a certain illicit drug, Rogan is not afraid to tackle complicated subjects in an honest, realistic, and bitingly satirical way.
In his novel Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson says that "In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts." Never is this more applicable than with comedians, and never more than in these 55 minutes with Rogan. As he addresses the vastness of space, the intricacies of relationships, and the gradual realization that there are no "real" grownups, he seems to be speaking the mind of the audience's collective unconscious, albeit in a more clever and literate way.
Like a true professional, Rogan keeps us laughing, but also keeps us prepared to be shocked by the next phrase he's going to utter or topic he's going to address. Do yourself a favor and check out Rogan's new DVD Joe Rogan Live. If you're not easily offended (a disclaimer posted outside Rogan's standup), be prepared to laugh out loud for a straight hour. The behind the scenes documentary included on the DVD (Joe Rogan: Beyond Fear) offers a glimpse behind the making of a standup tour, and the making of a man named Joe Rogan. Rogan candidly discusses his estranged father, his relationships, and his Ultimate Fight Championship hosting. Joe Rogan lays it all out on this DVD, and audiences couldn't be luckier.

With the release of his Comedy Central DVD "Seriously, Who Farted?", Swardson takes on the following topics of enjoying things much more when he's drunk such as fast food, to topics of playing XBOX 360 with his buddies and cussing and people around the complex thinking he is shooting gay porn and weed. For the most part, a lot of the comedy is about having a good time and having fun with his friends, getting drunk and comedy that definitely targets the college and young adult crowd. The Austin, Texas crowd was very receptive and supportive and definitely Swardson fed off that that energy that night.

VIDEO & AUDIO:
Video is featured in widescreen. Swardson's comedy routine is well-lighted and although backgrounds are kept simple, the good thing thing is that the comedy does show quite a bit of audience reaction with good shots at the audience. Camera angles are either close up, body shot, at various positions towards the audience and way up high above the audience. Editing is well-done. Not dizzying at all. Camera angle stays on the comedian for most of the time.
Audio is featured in Dolby Digital. I opted to have my receiver set at stereo on all channels in order to have the audio all around me. But audio is understandable and clear. Audience laughter is also quite clear and doesn't disturb Swardson's performance.

JUDGMENT CALL:
Nick Swardson's comedy DVD "Seriously, Who Farted?" definitely showcases the comedian's love for beer and alcohol. He loves it, repeats it and his comedy routine definitely works. Especially for the audience who go crazy when he talks about alcohol or drugs. College humor at its finest, I have to admit that I was so used to seeing Swardson on film and television that I never really seen his comedy routine. I knew he was a funny guy but I didn't know he was a comedian.
But watching "Seriously, Who Farted?", I couldn't help but laugh repeatedly. His comedy is definitely understandable and can be easily appreciated by those familiar with the topics he discusses and the fact that he uses certain situations that reach a young crowd, discussions of XBOX 360 or Nintendo Wii is one thing, but for audiences who have been in a drunk stupor, are familiar with pot brownies, Asian massage parlors, UFC, ninjas and can laugh quite easily at monkeys, definitely will find Swardson's comedy DVD to be quite fun and refreshing.
Sure, there are many drunk comedians but Swardson's comedy is quite hilarious because he's like the guy next door, the guy you went to college with, the guy you partied with... And I think what makes him so different from other comedians is the wacky roles he plays on films such as the gay skater in "Reno 911', the guy who lives at home and never has success with women in "You Don't Mess with the Zohan" or the Dance Dance Revolution gamer in "Grandma's Boy". Supporting roles that are just hilarious to watch and Swardson himself is just a funny comedian that will definitely make you laugh, pee in your pants or make you feel that you're going to bust a gut. It's that hilarious!
As for a Comedy Central DVD, you get the good camera angles but it would have been extra nice if this DVD release had been given the treatment of an audio CD (like Comedy Central's Russell Peters DVD release) because this is the kind of comedy that you would want to listen to in long commutes.
Overall, Swardson's "Seriously, Who Farted?" is a hilarious comedy DVD worth checking out!

Wanda Sykes - Sick and Tired (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Highly recommended, SICK AND TIRED (2006) is comedic great, Wanda Sykes's first solo HBO special. Filmed in Seattle's Moore Theater before a crowd that howls with laughter for the entire 60-minute performance, it was directed by the legendary Keith Truesdell.
In it, Sykes perfectly delivers the hilarious persona she's developed over years of appearing on Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Chris Rock Show, to name just a few of her performances. Like a female curmudgeon, Sykes bemoans her unique frustrations with life, Medicare, politicians, scientists, old people, men and everything in between, including NASA.
In the craziest, cranky-baby voice, Sykes steps out of the traditional funny girl role played by popular comediennes like Ellen DeGeneres, Sarah, Silverman, Margaret Cho and Mo'Nique. Instead she offers the viewer an insider's look into a woman's mind - from an almost male perspective. But it's not like she's remotely masculine herself.
Supremely feminine, Sykes is a girl's girl: sassy, blunt, confident, practical and an extraordinary wordsmith. Naturally inclined toward confessing every disturbing thought a woman could ever have, she is a goldmine of information for men interested in decoding how women really think. And for women, she is the fantasy best friend: smart, chatty and undoubtedly a great chick to hit the town with.
Watching SICK AND TIRED makes me realize that getting to know Wanda Sykes is like learning to use the Internet. In no time at all, you wonder how you ever lived without her.

With an almost reality-TV improv feel, Curb follows the Seinfeld co-creator through his miseries and mishaps brought about by his George Costanza-like neuroses and over analysis of everyday situations.
As with previous years, Season 6 is tied together by a single overarching plot. In the first episode, Larry's wife convinces him to take in a family displaced by a recent hurricane. The Black Family (whose name mirrors their race, a joke not lost on Larry) work their way into each episode, as either an extra source of frustration for our perpetually exasperated hero or as a source for an alternative perspective when providing Larry with advice.In another example of art imitating life, a second extended plot develops involving the breakdown of Larry's marriage, just as he is going through divorce proceedings in real life. Cheryl's character doesn't seem as important in Season 6, also possibly the product of Larry's real life matrimonial problems. His frustrations with Cheryl take a meaner, more mocking tone (her absurd reaction to Larry and the Blacks desire to use non-recycled toilet paper being the best example). Larry's real life soon-to-be former wife is a champion of environmental and other causes, a trait she shares with Cheryl and one that Season Six paints as naïve and misguided.
Richard Lewis, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen continue their real life roles as Larry's friends and have no problems mocking their own image (where else can you see great moments like an uninvited drunken limo driver crashing a party and taunting Ted Danson by calling him "Becker"?). Season 6 adds Lucy Lawless, Senator Barbara Boxer and John McEnroe in small parts as themselves, each bravely portraying an exaggerated and ridiculous version of who they really are, but one that fits perfectly with Larry David's view of the world...and one that echoes the spirit of this irresistible show.

Created by and starring Trevor Moore, Zach Cregger, Sam Brown, Darren Trumeter, and Timmy Williams; The Whitest Kids U' Know is often inspired sketch comedy with an edge, and is reminiscent of early MAD TV (minus the laugh track or audience) or more so Kids in the Hall. All ten first season episodes are collected here, and feature hysterical moments such as Trevor Moore showing his musical side with "Hitler Rap", playing a guitar while telling kids how they can get a new daddy, and more besides. Also in the mix are rampant conspiracy theories, a horny deer, different takes on Abraham Lincoln, a demon watching girls play with a Quija board, and a courtroom that falls victim to "opposite day". While there are times when skits fall flat (the face off between the monster truck drivers comes to mind), The Whitest Kids U' Know is a hysterical blast that deserves to be checked out if you've been missing out on it so far. The only disappointment about the DVD set is that more extras weren't included, but despite that, this is still definitely worth picking up for those who have enjoyed the show so far.

(More customer reviews)One can expect sexually perversion at an all time high on this Comedy Central DVD. "Sex". Mitch Fatel's comedy revolves 100% around it and he never strays.
Known for his comedic delivery (ie. he sounds like he's mentally challenged), Mitch Fatel is a comedian who loves women, loves breasts and loves sex. In fact, he'll let you know several times about his love for women and their bodyparts and getting laid.
His comedy is literally uncensored and he spares no one from the audience as he will talk about his love for breasts, big and small. His love for the vagina, sexual positions, sexual garments, using his popularity to get women, and literally sex this and sex that.It's literally a sex-driven comedy act and again, for Fatel it has worked successfully for him. His popularity has led to two comedy albums "Miniskirts & Muffins" and "Super Retardo" and now, here we are with his comedy special on DVD extended and uncut!
Fatel shows no worries or hesitation about the things he will discuss. From bestiality, what he finds on the Internet to having sex with a woman having her period. Fatel is literally not afraid to discuss sexual taboos and not afraid to use himself as the guinea pig for his jokes and the crowd loves it.

"Mitch Fatel is Magical" is presented in Widescreen. Camera shots are either typically up front and some focusing on the audience in the front row (who will occasionally be used in Fatel's comedy routine). Another camera behind the audience but overall, several camera angles and good editing make the comedy fluid and smooth. No special effects or crazy use of editing during the whole hour.
As for audio, audio is presented in English Stereo and English 5.1 Surround. For the most part, dialogue is easy to understand and is front and center channel driven. I preferred to watch the the DVD with my receiver set to stereo on all channels for a better, more immersive sound with the audience.

"Mitch Fatel is Magical" comes with the following special features:
* Mitch is a Big Star - (:47) A deleted scene with Mitch Fatel getting upset with his water.

JUDGMENT CALL:
This is probably the raunchiest Comedy Central DVD that I have seen so far. But for the most part, I found it hilarious and entertaining.
Rarely do you find comedians who focus on sex only for their comedy act but Mitch Fatel has made it a career and it has worked. Most of the time, when a comedian gets into discussion about sex, the audience starts feeling a bit timid (especially for those that bring their kids to an adult comedy show) but in this case, this is strictly adult humor at its finest.
Mitch Fatel has no problems discussing his love for women and sex that nothing is left out. He'll get comedy about everything...the breasts, the vagina, the butt...you name it, his comedy routine has included it.
Needless to say, it all comes down to whether or not you're into this style of comedy. In a way, I was skeptical before because typically other comedians who have tried to do a comedy routine with more than 15-minutes based on sex, it just seems as if it didn't fit into their routine or that the audience was not feeling it. But the thing is, with Mitch Fatel...knowing that his comedy is 100% sex-driven, you know what you're going to get and just watch and have a good time.
Overall, "Mitch Fatel is Magical" is absolutely perverted...and satisfaction is guaranteed!

Is that a sparkle in his eye or is he just confused? With his innocence and friendly demeanor, Mitch quickly engages the audience and then catches them off guard with his mixture of mischievous dialogue and off color comments. While laughing at observations only Mitch can get away with we are left wondering if he truly understands what he just said. We never really know.

(More customer reviews)I recently ordered this on Amazon and I am currently awaiting its arrival via UPS this afternoon. I became a Whitest Kids fan immediately after I caught an episode on Netflix. From that moment on, I have been watching any and every episode that I can get my hands on. I am glad to see that IFC is not afraid to let a cutting edge comedy show try to be bold and daring. I have seen every episode available of Instant Watch on Netflix, but I will re-watch Season 2 again when it arrives. I high recommend this to people who like bold and often times cringe inducing humor. If you have ever enjoyed shock jock radio then this is a must see.

Worst Week is an outrageous comedy series about a guy, a girl, her parents and a side-splitting assortment of catastrophes. Freakazoid: Season 2 (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)One of the prizes of the Cartoon Network/ Warner Bros. late '90s merger was that some of the best cartoons from Warner Bros. found a new home and ready audience on Cartoon Network. That round-up brought in a roster of well-known 'toons that began with the masthead, "Steven Spielberg Presents" which, like the Looney Tunes logo, promised unbridled zaniness. The flagship series was Animaniacs, soon eclipsed by the smartest and subtlest segment, Pinky and the Brain. Mix the two and you might get Freakazoid!
The show only lasted two seasons on WB. Unlike these other Tom Ruegger shows, this one never really hit its stride, from the first peaking higher and crashing harder than most shows on the schedule. Season two might be more even, but that's also a misnomer. There are more stock characters to play off of from season one, the writers have carte blanche to do just about anything they can think of, pop culture references go whizzing by at dizzying speeds, while the shows themselves may seem to drag if you don't get the joke.
The show doesn't take itself seriously, but cartoon fans, movie buffs, and animation afficianados will have a field day pointing out parodies and tracking down tributes. One show starts with a parody of Bob Clampett's '60s series, Beany and Cecil. Another plays off the musical Hello Dolly. The show is constantly referential, as when Freakazoid, the Brain and Wacko all go see Spielberg to ask who has the best show. In the five minute bonus commentary, one of the writers remarks that the storylines are somewhat non-linear, revealing a gift for understatement. One could also say the episodes are metafictional, were one writing a thesis, or one could just enjoy the show.
Animation in general is an undervalued art form, so it may not be immediately apparent how amazing this show was when wedged into the schedule of normal linear and fictional cartoons. Animation buffs will appreciate the commentary, a bonus appearing more and more on cartoon DVD sets. Freakazoid! was also unusual in that like The Simpsons, each show was one long episode (rather than two or three). This well-packaged single case includes 11 episodes (shows) on two one-sided DVDs, along with bonus commentaries and a trailer for Saturday Morning Cartoons, the first two sets in a DVD series of SatAm Hanna-Barbera cartoons from Yogi to the Jetsons, as seen on CN's Boomerang channel. The first disc also starts with a preview that is almost a mini-documentary on the animated Green Lantern from DC Comics and Warner Bros.
Arguably, this sort of humor may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the audience for it has long been underserved. The arguments rage on as to which is the best show, but fans of Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain may find a third contender to target the funny bone in Freakazoid!

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, originally premiering on the FX network in 2005, revolves around four friends: Charlie (Charlie Day), Mac (Rob McElhenney), Dennis (Glenn Howerton), and his sister Dee (Kaitlin Olson); all of whom own and run an Irish bar in downtown Philadelphia. They get into all kinds of crazy hijinks through misunderstandings and just plain bad judgement, ranging from being mistaken as a gay bar to Charlie lying about having cancer. Yes, there's nothing really wholly original about the show's premise, but it remains hysterically funny throughout. The second season of the show finds Danny DeVito joining the cast as Dennis and Dee's father, who isn't the sanest of the bunch either. This DVD set compiles the first two seasons of the show, and is definitely worth picking up for viewers who turned it when it first premiered, as well as newer viewers who may be anxiously awaiting the upcoming and long awaited third season of this very funny show.

Stella - Season One (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I hate to just throw another five stars at Stella with the other reviewers, but it deserves nothing less! The comedy is brilliantly simple, which is hard to find in TV these days. The plots are simple and predictable enough that the ridiculousness of the jokes becomes the focus of each episode. It's amazing how few television shows take the absurdist route these days, but at the same time; I would have never guessed that three men in suits that act like toddlers could make me seriously laugh. The three main actors are hysterical in their unusual relationship with each other.
I watched much of the show's first season, and immediately decided that it was some kind of independant group that had come up with their own plots, and would stay away from the mainstream. However, they score huge credibility with great guest stars (Jeanine Garofalo, Paul Rudd I believe?), that play off of the absurdist comedy with some strange touch of realism. I can't recommend this show enough.

I didn't know what to get my husband for Christmas. This released at exactly the right time, and my husband was really happy when he opened this gift.
I normally don't laugh out loud at anyone, but George Lopez is seriously funny. I did a lot of laughing out loud with this one!
