Teen Titans - Trouble in Tokyo (Original Movie) (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I've loved everything about the Teen Titans series since episode 1, and I must say, this movie succeeded in living up to what made the show so enjoyable to watch. Trouble in Tokyo was exciting, funny, and all around a blast to watch. It's especially a must-have if you're a big Teen Titans fan!
I will admit that the plot was a bit Robin-heavy, though I get the feeling that was intended. Despite this, the amusing antics of the other Titans (specifically the loveable green joker, Beast Boy) in a strange new place make for a fun-filled adventure of a movie. Starfire and Robin also finally manage to sort through their feelings while in Tokyo; definitely not something to miss, especially if you've been a fan of these two.
The music was also beautifully done, and some of the art was especially captivating. The characters singing their own mangled version of the theme song in the ending credits was also quite a treat, and left me in stitches by the time it was done playing.
Overall, an enjoyable film that's definitely worth buying. Here's to hoping that the Titans get more Direct-to-Videos (or even better- more episodes)!

Teen Titans - The Complete Second Season (DC Comics Kids Collection) (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)This is season 2 of the Teen Titans series, and is notable for adapting the "Judas Contract" story arc from the comics. Terra is introduced, and Beast Boy is given something else to do other than play the comic relief. In other episodes Starfire is blasted to the future and meets Nightwing(!), Robin takes Killer Moth's daughter to the prom, and the Titans compete in a tournament of heroes and gain new allies. The obligatory "fractured" episode of the season is just that, with an imp named Larry breaking reality and causing chaos for everyone. The only blemish is the tail end of the season finale, which seems to take the easy way out after all the built-up character drama.
So we get another nice, compact, affordable collection of episodes. Half of this season was already released under the subtitle "Fear Itself," but this is the only place to pick up the remaining 7 episodes. Since Warner Bros. doesn't seem to be releasing another single disc for those who bought the first one, the smart (only) bet would be for fans to grab this set and sell the single disc. The prices are comparable, either way.

Freakazoid: Season 2 (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)One of the prizes of the Cartoon Network/ Warner Bros. late '90s merger was that some of the best cartoons from Warner Bros. found a new home and ready audience on Cartoon Network. That round-up brought in a roster of well-known 'toons that began with the masthead, "Steven Spielberg Presents" which, like the Looney Tunes logo, promised unbridled zaniness. The flagship series was Animaniacs, soon eclipsed by the smartest and subtlest segment, Pinky and the Brain. Mix the two and you might get Freakazoid!
The show only lasted two seasons on WB. Unlike these other Tom Ruegger shows, this one never really hit its stride, from the first peaking higher and crashing harder than most shows on the schedule. Season two might be more even, but that's also a misnomer. There are more stock characters to play off of from season one, the writers have carte blanche to do just about anything they can think of, pop culture references go whizzing by at dizzying speeds, while the shows themselves may seem to drag if you don't get the joke.
The show doesn't take itself seriously, but cartoon fans, movie buffs, and animation afficianados will have a field day pointing out parodies and tracking down tributes. One show starts with a parody of Bob Clampett's '60s series, Beany and Cecil. Another plays off the musical Hello Dolly. The show is constantly referential, as when Freakazoid, the Brain and Wacko all go see Spielberg to ask who has the best show. In the five minute bonus commentary, one of the writers remarks that the storylines are somewhat non-linear, revealing a gift for understatement. One could also say the episodes are metafictional, were one writing a thesis, or one could just enjoy the show.
Animation in general is an undervalued art form, so it may not be immediately apparent how amazing this show was when wedged into the schedule of normal linear and fictional cartoons. Animation buffs will appreciate the commentary, a bonus appearing more and more on cartoon DVD sets. Freakazoid! was also unusual in that like The Simpsons, each show was one long episode (rather than two or three). This well-packaged single case includes 11 episodes (shows) on two one-sided DVDs, along with bonus commentaries and a trailer for Saturday Morning Cartoons, the first two sets in a DVD series of SatAm Hanna-Barbera cartoons from Yogi to the Jetsons, as seen on CN's Boomerang channel. The first disc also starts with a preview that is almost a mini-documentary on the animated Green Lantern from DC Comics and Warner Bros.
Arguably, this sort of humor may not be everyone's cup of tea, but the audience for it has long been underserved. The arguments rage on as to which is the best show, but fans of Animaniacs and Pinky and the Brain may find a third contender to target the funny bone in Freakazoid!

The adult fans of these shows already know to wait for the inevitable box sets. This is aimed squarely at kids, who don't have the ability to discern what a bad deal it truly is. Shame on you, Time-Warner.

Kids WB! Brings you a new series inspired by the DC Comics legend Superman. In LEGION OF SUPER HEROES, a team of superheroes from the 31st century heads back in time to enlist Superman's help in battling their nemeses, the Fatal Five. But when they arrive in the Man of Steel's hometown, Smallville, they discover that they've miscalculated a bit. Freakazoid - The Complete First Season (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)If you're a fan of the spontaneous humor of the Animaniacs, then you'll love this show. Dexter Douglas uses the power of cyberspace to become the superhero Freakazoid (this was in the early days of the internet, so it seemed like a mysterious thing at the time). Unfortunately, Freakazoid isn't your normal superhero. Yes, he has superpowers (the funniest being when he flies by stretching his arms out and making wind noises as he runs around). Yes, he has supervillains. But he's not Batman by any means! He's fun and frantic and full of humor.
Each episode usually had one skit running throughout the show, with tiny sketches built into it like little commercial breaks. One of the best was "Frenching with Freakazoid", in which he would teach a French phrase. Most of them wouldn't be something you'd use in a normal conversation however ("Who cut the cheese?"). The frenetic pace of the show keeps it from being boring, and I'm so glad to see it finally make it to disc.
Superman has Lex Luthor, Batman has the Joker, and Freakazoid has Mo-Ron (yep, just like it sounds). Like I said earlier, if you're a fan of Animaniacs and Pinky & The Brain, this show will be a perfect fit for you. Never boring!

Legion of Super-Heroes, Vol. 3 (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I was going to hold out on buying these LSH DVDs until they release them in whole seasons... but then, with the disappointing early cancellation of the show after Season 2, I realized it might never happen. So I am glad I finally bought them... even though there are no extras, it is great to have these on DVD, commercial-free.
Legion of Super-Heroes Vol. 3 contains the final five episodes of the first season... which were pretty good, especially for longtime Legion fans. They are:
- "The Substitutes" (the Legion of Substitute Heroes makes it to the animated world!)
- "Child's Play"
- "Chain of Command" (Cosmic Boy returns, hooray! He was sorely missing, as one of the original 3)
- "Sundown, Part 1"
- "Sundown, Part 2" (the fate of Ferro Lad, animated style)

Loonatics Unleashed - The Complete First Season (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Loony Tunes have ventured (at least) twice into the future. The first time was with the brilliantly funny "Duck Dodgers". The latter time was with this ... um ... effort. "Loonatics Unleashed" isn't without merit, and might be considered a good product were it not that it isn't up to Warner Brothers quality. WB cartoons are noted for their cheeky humor, appealing at least as much to adults as to children. These pedestrian superhero episodes, on the other hand, cannot fail to convince adults to pass them up.
The premise of the series is that 6 ordinary individuals (2 bunnies, a Tasmanian devil, a duck, a roadrunner, and a coyote) live on the "city-planet" of Acmetropolis and acquire super powers when a meteor strikes the planet in 2772. What's confusing is that the titles section features these individuals with a count-up to 2772 from the 21st Century. Cute, but frelling stupid.
In each episode, the super sextet - amid mildly amusing but essentially banal banter - fight various super villains. For the most part, these are types that appear in every mediocre superhero adventure series and even some of the better ones. Like many mediocre superhero series, this one takes its villains far too seriously for the context. And of course these guys are the only characters that laugh - the usual evil laugh, of course. Why is it that villains in predictable superhero adventures always - ALWAYS - laugh evilly at every opportunity? Animated material of this sort seems to leave laughter exclusively in the province of villains and (occasionally) their henchpeople and/or henchthings.
In point of fact, the makers of this series missed their best bets right from the get-go. The superpowers of the characters are sometimes based on their previous normal abilities, but sometimes not. The problem here is that we don't see enough WB looniness. Lexi and Ace have fairly ordinary biologically generated energy weapons and have virtually no personality traits one could describe as "Bugs-like". What we have here is basically the silly and drekish "Teen Titans", including its overly "modern" animation "look", but with animals. Feh.
The other misstep by the program's creators is (or are) the villains. As noted before, these are not terribly imaginative and do the evil-laugh bit excessively. Amazingly, the writers totally missed the obvious technique of making villains from stock WB characters as well as the protagonists. Adding to the fun could have been, say, Jupiter Sam - as well as The Fudd, still hunting wabbits - as well as Tech E. Coyote converted into a really neurotic villain - and so on. Ah, the sadness of missed opportunities....
Sadly, this whole production has gone into too much overtime (that is, a 2nd season). Nevertheless, we can rejoice that there's something new out there for the 14-going-on-9 crowd. The rest of us can hope for a 3rd season of Duck Dodgers.

The Batman - The Complete Second Season (DC Comics Kids Collection) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)The second season of KidsWB's new The Batman series is much improved over the first season. The show seems more confident of its identity now, and knows how to deliver exciting, fun, stories with less emphasis on outright pandering to the kiddie demographic. Notable episodes include the introduction of the Riddler, Hugo Strange, and a new take on the Solomon Grundy legend. Patrick Warburton makes a fun guest appearance as Yin's new partner, and Joker even dons the cape and cowl to fight crime for an episode. Ragdoll and Spellbinder's appearances make best use of the show's visual energy, and the season finale marks the introduction of a classic Batman supporting character and the setup for season 3. Best of all, there is a dramatic Clayface story that really makes viewers feel for this tragic villain in the vein of the old B:TAS series.
Among other fixes: The new Joker finally comes into his own, and Alfred ditches his nagging, season 1 attitude. Yin has more to do as Batman's partner, and the overall acting is much better from everyone. Penguin and Freeze still do nothing for me, but even they seem slightly improved from their season 1 offerings.
Season 2 of The Batman works for me. It's still not a deep show, but there's finally enough right here that I can enjoy the episodes without constantly making the B:TAS comparisons. Try this set, and you might find yourself having fun too. Recommended.

(More customer reviews)I know the rules state that as a male in my mid 30's I'm required to dislike any animated Batman outside the Timm/Dini universe. I held up my part of the agreement at first. I gladly purchased every DVD from the first episode featuring Manbat all the way to the Batman Beyond S2 and Justice League "S2" sets that came out recently. I'm already planning on getting the fantastic last season of JLU as well. I am as absolute a fan of the Timm/Dini universe as any other fan I've met. But, I broke the rules and began to like The Batman series. It isn't only fantastic, it sets a new kind of standard in animation quality for a serialized show. The Batman's animation is consistently and reliably stunning. The style of the animation helps create a DVD picture quality that is so good, it is what I often use to demonstrate my home system to friends. But, there is more than just great production values to the show. They have clearly been very thoughtful in coming up with fresh designs for many characters, while remaining faithful to the critical elements. Batman's cape and cowl, along with the rest of his costume looks fantastic. Rino Romano does a great job as the voice (and I'm a diehard Kevin Conroy fan). Commissioner Gordon is also perfect both in form and voice. The new Joker is refreshingly different while keeping the same level of insanity that makes him The Batman's ultimate foe. Above all this, there are the stories themselves. For cryin' out loud, they got Paul Dini to write the show's introduction to Harley Quinn. Their episode with a new villain, Ragdoll was clever and ended with one of the best comedic-timed three-way fight I've seen. What I also like about the show is how they took some of the newer concepts introduced in the last show and made them their own. I don't know how many people liked the Gotham Knights use of Batman and Batgirl working together more, but I loved it. They did the same here and with nice original elements, even introducing her well before Robin (and they could have kept it that way as long as they wanted as far as I'm concerned). Their version of Clayface has a fantastic overall story. The relationships between Batman and Alfred, Batgirl, and Gordon all hit the right tone. The third season showed a continued increase in story quality, which was already good in season 2. If they keep this up, I'll be watching to the end. Obviously, I highly recommend the show.

Several brand new villains for the series are introduced this season: Cosmo Krank/Toymaker, Prank Joker's response to Batgirl's addition to Batman's family, Temblor and D.A.V.E., a H.A.R.D.A.C.-like super computer created by Hugo Strange to emulate the worst villain minds in Gotham.
