Joe Rogan Live (2006) Review

Joe Rogan Live (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Joe Rogan, best known as the host of the outrageous reality show Fear Factor, also happens to be a damn fine comedian. In his own words he confesses that probably only 10% of his fans know him from standup, and that the other 90% know him only as the host of Fear Factor.
This doesn't stop Rogan from speaking his mind for 55 minutes in a filmed standup show on a small stage in the Tempe Improv comedy club in Tempe, Arizona. And this doesn't stop Rogan from being jaw-droppingly, gaspingly hilarious. Like a more honest, more dangerous version of Dane Cook, or a testosterone-addled David Cross, Rogan takes the stage with a manic energy and an incredibly quick (and gloriously offensive) wit.
Rogan addresses the Fear Factor fame quickly in order to clear the air. Covering such topics as the story of Noah's Ark, the three magic words in the English language, the proliferation of dumb people, and an interesting solution to the war on terror that involves a certain illicit drug, Rogan is not afraid to tackle complicated subjects in an honest, realistic, and bitingly satirical way.
In his novel Self-Reliance, Ralph Waldo Emerson says that "In every work of genius we recognize our own rejected thoughts." Never is this more applicable than with comedians, and never more than in these 55 minutes with Rogan. As he addresses the vastness of space, the intricacies of relationships, and the gradual realization that there are no "real" grownups, he seems to be speaking the mind of the audience's collective unconscious, albeit in a more clever and literate way.
Like a true professional, Rogan keeps us laughing, but also keeps us prepared to be shocked by the next phrase he's going to utter or topic he's going to address. Do yourself a favor and check out Rogan's new DVD Joe Rogan Live. If you're not easily offended (a disclaimer posted outside Rogan's standup), be prepared to laugh out loud for a straight hour. The behind the scenes documentary included on the DVD (Joe Rogan: Beyond Fear) offers a glimpse behind the making of a standup tour, and the making of a man named Joe Rogan. Rogan candidly discusses his estranged father, his relationships, and his Ultimate Fight Championship hosting. Joe Rogan lays it all out on this DVD, and audiences couldn't be luckier.

Demetri Martin. Person. (2007) Review

Demetri Martin. Person. (2007)
Average Reviews:

Demetri Martin's low-key, child-like comedy is an awful lot of fun to watch. One part Zach Galifianakis, one part Mitch Hedburg and with a dash of early Pee Wee Herman on Ritalin, Demetri performs as though he's a talented but strange kid putting on a show for his parents. Through stand up ("I like to stand around ATMs, wait until someone punches in their PIN number and say, 'Got it!" and run away."), odd train of thought music, graphs and pie charts of observations he's made ("This graph represents how cute a girl is vs. how long I'll listen to her talk about how intuitive her cat is..."), "Art", and even some animation, it's laugh out loud hilarious and worth watching twice.
Criticism? The stage play of "Where my comedy goes" could have been cut, or at least cut down. It's amusing, but goes on a bit too long, hence, I give the DVD 4 instead of 5 stars. An excellent show by perhaps the next superstar comic!

Martin Lawrence Live - Runteldat (Widescreen Edition) (2002)
Average Reviews:

With any profession there is a certain level of inspiration that allow an individual to grow from. You can tell by the long list of achievements, along with a long list of obstacles, Martin Lawrence has come a long way and I am very proud of him. By looking at his act, I see the real life points he makes in his scenes like Bill Cosby. The profanity used to get attention like Richard Pryor. I can go on, but the bottom line is he has perfected a talent that no one can deny. As an African American female, I get really disgusted on how we hate on each other. Since I have a stressful life, I need to laugh sometimes. There are comedians on cable who are not African Americans, but are really corny and do not have any comical creativity. But, they are given so many more opportunities to advance because they appeal to the mainstream. With everything against him, Martin Lawrence has proved himself again that he is not just another comedian but a true entertainer. He reminds me that no matter how much money, power, or talent someone may have, no one is more important than GOD. I feel GOD does not put us through anything we can not handle and looking at Martin on the big screen only showed me how a person can achieve anything if they put their mind to it!

In this poor excuse for a comedy DVD, 6 no-name female "comics" stumble over poor writing, poor delivery, and general awkwardness on stage. Watching this trash felt like rubbernecking a car accident on the freeway. The audience isn't into the material, and no one looks happy to be there. Important Things with Demetri Martin: Season One (2009) Review

Important Things with Demetri Martin: Season One (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Entertaining, fun... Demetri Martin's "Important Things" is probably one of the best and most complete Comedy Central DVD releases that I have watched!
The DVD release is a show hosted by comedian/musician Demetri Martin. In February 2009, "Important Things with Demetri Martin" scored Comedy Central's most watched premiere for the network with 2.4 million total viewers since 2003 ("Chappelle's Show" drew 2.5 million). The show is produced by Jon Stewart's Busboy Productions and One Verse, Inc. and is probably one of the freshest comedy half-hour comedy show I have seen in a long while.
Demetri Martin, known for his deadpan humor starts off his show with jokes (stand-up comedy) but then integrates sketch comedy segments with other actors, animation and he's also a talented musician who can play the guitar, keyboard, harmonica and who knows how many other instruments and also, you get actual sketches, word play and other things that you probably would never imagine seeing in a show. Sure, "Saturday Night Live" may also have similar type of things that we see on "Important Things with Demetri Martin" but its the execution that makes this series quite entertaining and fun.
The show is built around a certain topic and for the first season, there are a total of seven episodes (each episode are 21 minutes long) that are featured on this DVD. Included are (spoiler-less summaries):
* Timing - The topic of the episode is timing and stand-up comedy that revolve around timing. Sketch comedy include a scene featuring Amanda Peet and Demetri Martin in which Martin has trouble showcasing his anger during a drama scene but off-camera he has a lot of anger, a police officer who raids the wrong home, "What?" Slam Poet Champion, Jerry Pappas: Time Gigolo (a gigolo who uses a time machine and using his knowledge to get with women in the past), a guy early to a rave and two guys in a dungeon. Also, included are Demetri's drawings and one of the coolest music performances by Demetri Martin (playing a guitar, harmonica, bells, keyboard, tambourine while showcasing jokes on a tablet).
* Power - The topic of the episode is about power and stand-up comedy revolving around power. Sketches include Parking War - two men arguing over a parking spot, a yellow belt opening a package of headphones and another with the yellow belt fighting depression, a superhero sketch titled "Revenger", Creedocide (how to kill rats in your home) and Demetrocles. Drawings plus a musical performance by Demetri.
* Brains - The topic of the episode is about brains and stand-up comedy revolving around brains. Sketch comedy include a man who gets to eat at T.G.I.F. with Benjamin Franklin, Shakespeare and Galileo, "What?" Slam Poet Champion, Dadz, a genius and an idiot, Early Important Fairy Tales - The Royal Food Taster and Demetrocles.
* Games - The topic of the episode is about games and stand-up comedy revolving around games. Sketch comedy segments include Devin Cottonfield - Emotional Escape Artist, Annihilator board game, Men's passive aggressive race, humans pranking birds in "Nuthouse" and Da Mici.
* Chairs - The topic of the episode is about chairs and stand-up comedy revolving around chairs. Sketch comedy segments include Employees talking bad about their bosses at the urinals (while their bosses are in the toilet overhearing them), a yellow belt trying to relax on a beach chair and another segment with the yellow belt fighting gravity, a man who must make a decision - sit with the beautiful woman or next to old man, Demotrocles and the origin of gum found under a chair.
* Safety - The topic of the episode is about safety and stand-up comedy revolving around safety. Sketch comedy segments include Spring Haven - Home for the Elderly, An S&M Couple whose safe word is..., pube-safe home security, Health Class 1231 A.D., a man with a neck brace, a scientist who needs to deactivate a proton accelerator but forgot to bring his security ID and Early Important Fairy Tales - The Royal Food Taster.
* Coolness - The topic of the episode is about coolness and stand-up comedy revolving around coolness. Sketch comedy segments include Hoodwinkers Inc., dadz, man with a dragon tattoo on his face, the shower cap with hair, Da Mici and two men in a dungeon. Also, a musical performance by Demetri Martin.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
"Important Things with Demetri Martin" is featured in full screen and audio is in Dolby Digital.
Video quality is a mix bag as some scenes are shot with a variety of video. But for the most part, the video quality is well-done and the audio is clear and understandable. For audio, my preference for my receiver setting was stereo on all channels and as a comedy DVD, it was good to see the audience responsive to the jokes.
There are no subtitles included on this DVD.
SPECIAL FEATURES:
"Important Things with Demetri Martin" comes with a good amount of features. Included are:
* Brain Injuries
* Parking War Outtakes
* Basketball 1
* Basketball 2
* Cult Leader in Love (with commentary)
* Killing Someone with Kindness
* Killing Time in the Studio
* Dinner with Hero Outtakes
* A Tiny Guy Helps Find a Contact Lens
* A Yellow Belt Breaks his silence
* Safety Dummy
* Early Production Graph
* Early Production Lineup
* Audio Commentary for Timing, Power, Coolness and Games with Demetri Martin, Michael Koman (Supervising Producer) and Dan Mintz (Writer).
* Free Tiny Poster

JUDGMENT CALL:
This is probably one of the most entertaining Comedy Central DVD's that I have had the opportunity to review.
What I enjoy about Demetri Martin's comedy is his deadpan humor. The man is a quick thinker and for those who have caught his comedy routines, his improvisation on stage is very cool. But what makes "Important Things with Demetri Martin" is that he and his writers really think outside of the box in trying to present a show that is different from what anyone has seen before. Granted, I'm sure coming up with topics can be challenging but for the most part, he is able to pull it off.
The whole execution of the show was fun to watch. The stand-up comedy, the drawings, the music and of course the sketch comedy segments are hilarious but also included are these short segments that take place before or after a commercial which are cool and also during the stand-up comedy, you will see text written on the audience. It's just something that is quite different and for the most part, the presentation is quite fresh. Even the sketch comedy, these are topics that you won't see on "Saturday Night Live" or other shows.
The DVD is full of bonus features and after watching the bonus features which some include outtakes, I was surprised to find commentary for many of the episodes and that was pretty awesome. One of the things that surprised me was listening to the commentary and hearing that some jokes are conceived on the show within minutes of the show starting or created during a break. But also to hear some of the behind-the-scene commentary on how the sketch comedy scenes were conceived was quite fun to listen to. Especially learning why Demetri Martin wears the same clothing, mainly because some segments work with the audience and some don't and they can shuffle scenes around for different episodes if needed. And some of those scenes that didn't go so well with the audience make it into the special features segment. Another interesting thing, maybe not so major but pretty cool to see, is that the menu is interactive (which Demetri Martin makes comments during a selection) which was pretty cool.
"Important Things with Demetri Martin" is definitely one of the best Comedy Central DVD's that I have ever seen (and I have seen many). Seven solid episodes, a lot of special features and bonus items and pretty much, a complete DVD that doesn't really skimp on anything.
Fans of Demetri Martin or those curious about this DVD, you will not be disappointed and frankly, you'll be getting your money's worth with this DVD release. "Important Things with Demetri Martin" is highly recommended!

Whoopi - Back to Broadway (The 20th Anniversary Show) (2005) Review

Whoopi - Back to Broadway (The 20th Anniversary Show) (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I worked the entire run of Whoopi's Broadway Debut on the theatre staff, and I remember it vividly. It was Broadway's Lyceum Theatre, the same stage used for another historic TV special, LIZA WITH A Z.
First of all, a correction to what I've read above... this was never called The Spook Show. She may have done something earlier with that title but on Broadway it was just WHOOPI GOLDBERG. This show was far more than standup comedy, it was Performance Art. Sure, she made you laugh, but she also worked your other emotions and made you think.
The show consisted of six great characters: Act I - Fontaine the Junkie, The Surfer Chick, and The Disabled Girl. Act II - The Raisin Lover, The Old Entertainer, and The Little Girl with the Shirt on her Head. The show ran just about two hours. No costume or makeup changes were used... just Whoopi's own face, body... and TALENT.
When her name went up on the marquee, neither the public, nor the theatre staff, had any idea who this person was. After watching one performance, we were fans. Before her second performance, Whoopi got a nice note from one of the ushers. After the audience left, she looked into the house, figured out which usher it was, walked to the edge of the stage, and called out to him. She held out her hand, but gave more than a handshake. She pulled him onstage and said "come meet Mike," then introduced him to her producer/director, Mike Nichols. A few weeks later the same usher sent a little gift from the show home to Whoopi's mom. Before the house opened for next show, he was summoned to the stage for "a message from my mother" which turned out to be a warm hug.
The entire production staff was three people: A Stage Manager, A Spotlight Guy, and an Unknown Star. So who was this down-to-earth talent going to hang with? Seven ushers. After meeting her, we were all in her corner, and she, in ours.
Whoopi usually hung in the seats with us before the house opened. With the backdrop up, you had a clear view down the hall to the stage door. One afternoon, an usher arrived late, and tried to slip along the stage wall to the usher's room. Whoopi spotted him, and called out "Look, there's X coming in late, trying not to be noticed!" When told of a common mishap with patrons sitting in the wrong seats, Whoopi added a "be kind to your ushers" message to her curtain speech. Another night, while hanging with the staff, the stage manager told Whoopi that a certain well-known pop diva was coming backstage after the show, and wanted some extra "security." Remember, this was a small theatre and there were only a handful of us. "Tell her we'll lock the door" she laughed.
Early in the run, a lady called the stage door and asked, "So Vhat's a Vhoopi Goldboig?" The Doorman described her as very talented, but the next detail (black) made the lady hang up. The story was passed on to Whoopi, and that lady became a funny little character in her curtain speech.
The opening of her show firmly established that there was no fourth wall, and that Whoopi was more than willing (and totally able) to improvise in character with whatever happened. She did that often, but we don't see much of it here.
One night, an embarrassed usher tried to avoid eye contact with the stage as he escorted three successive groups of latecomers to their seats. He noticed that the theatre had fallen silent, and realized the star had focused her attention into the house. Knowing her spontaneous nature, he ran back and ducked behind the seats. Silence. After a long pause, he peeked up and saw her staring right at him. In mock indignation (and in complete character) she said "Don't bring no more people down here!" Not an official complaint, just a spontaneous funny moment in her show. At other times she might address latecomers directly: "Where the hell have you been?" She was master of that stage, and held court with engaging skill.
Word of mouth quickly made this enormous talent the darling of Broadway, with celebrities in the house nearly every night.
Through eight shows a week, over several months, she never missed one performance, even when she was so sick she could barely speak. We never saw a trace of star attitude, or bad humor from Whoopi... except one night during her curtain speech, when someone tried to bait her with a question on a topical human rights issue. We saw just a quick flash of anger: "What do you THINK I think of it? "You want to talk about this? We'll do it later," then directed her attention back to the rest of the audience and said a gracious goodnight. When the curtain came down, we were quietly told not to let anyone backstage that night. That's it.
She came to the theatre staff Christmas party with her mom, daughter and a big stack of presents: huge, extra thick silver-gray beach towels that had the show's logo silk-screened in red. Months later, when she heard that the ushers were not invited to the closing night party (which was all producers and theatre execs) she said "F--- 'em, we'll have our own party!"
On the last show, Whoopi held it together until the last scene, the Little Girl with the Shirt on her Head. It must have hit her right then. Her voice wavered through that last character as she fought back tears. At the curtain call she called "my ushers" onstage to stand behind her. When she said goodbye, she asked that the curtain not come down, then walked offstage with us. Later on, the closing party for WHOOPI GOLDBERG on Broadway was just Whoopi sitting on the edge of the stage, with her ushers, and simple take-out food.
The next day, an HBO crew took over. They wanted only a one-hour show, with extra bits of the individual characters backstage. Instead of shooting the show in its entirety and editing later, Whoopi was directed to speed up, and cut and censor her material live in front of the cameras! The Old Entertainer character was dropped entirely, and cue cards were held up to bridge the cuts they wanted.
I was in the audience, which was now lit for television, and the whole vibe was different. Accustomed to months of her successful free-form delivery, this was obviously jarring to Whoopi. Professional, but uncomfortable, Whoopi stopped at one point, and said something like "I don't want to freak y'all out in the video truck, but... I've been doing this for months, we closed last night, I boo-hooed, and now y'all are holding up signs at me, so this is not easy..."
Some great material, (about half the show) was lost in the process. More material survived in the (studio recorded) album, but what was presented on HBO as "WHOOPI GOLDBERG-Direct from Broadway" had actually detoured through a lot of ill-advised editing. The result does not do justice to Whoopi's formidable talent, and how amazing her debut performance was.
The Anniversary Show was in the same theatre, which looks huge due to camera magnification and extra lighting. The opening isn't quite as strong as the original was, because you don't see the curtain go down and back up as she restarts the show... this audience knew how to respond on her first entrance. The new show does seem less character driven and more of a standup platform for making statements, but her message is on the nose, and still thoroughly entertaining.
It's a shame we don't have her all of Broadway Debut, but I'm glad to at least have what's left of it, along with the new Anniversary Show. Whoopi is a terrific talent, even better when experienced live, spontaneous and unedited. This set is just a glimpse of what she is capable of. I Highly Recommend it

Smart, savvy and sassy, Whoopi Goldberg exploded onto the show-biz scene in 1985, when her one-woman Broadway show wowed live audiences and, later, HBO subscribers. One of the worlds most beloved and honored acting and comedy stars -- the multiple award-winning Goldberg performs in her first solo HBO special in over 13 years. Taped before a live audience at the Lyceum Theatre in New York City (the same venue for her historic 1985 inaugural HBO special). Its really hard to review a standup comedy routine "critiquingly". If it's GREAT, like this one is, I would have to resort to the overwhelming non-lack of cliches plastered on the covers of movie boxes and posters across the Land.
What it boils down to, is this (and its very simple): This is one of the funniest and most tallented stand-up acts I have ever seen. You have your all-time greats like Pryor and (fill in your fav here) but did they hold three-way conversations at lightning speed and legibly conveying three unique voices with three different personalities? Either he has incredible tallent or he's related to Emily Rose.
In short, its fantastic - Excellent - pullamuscle funny - and man does it deliver. Highly recommended for you adults who need a change in pace. ~saos~

The Henry Rollins Show: Season One (2006) Review

The Henry Rollins Show: Season One (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Rollins' show is a thoroughly engrossing mix of no-audience one-on-one interviews where the interviewer actually listens to his guests and holds a genuine discussion with them, along with sharp, no-holds-barred commentary pieces from Henry himself.
And then, there are great musical performances from artists you would rarely see on the usual late night talk shows, and it's the musical part where I give this DVD a huge star-off deduction. Pretty much every musical act does two numbers, but Rollins informs the viewers that the second number can only be viewed on the website. Sorry, I like to enjoy musical performances on my big-screen TV and multi-speaker audio system, not sitting in my office watching them on my computer, and it's mind-boggling--especially in light of Rollins being a musician himself--that this obvious extra of putting both songs on the DVD so fans could at least buy them and enjoy each artist's pair of songs together wasn't done. Instead, we get the straight show as it aired.
Great show; frustrating missed opportunity. How about it next season, guys?
