Lewis Black - Unleashed (2003) Review

I first became familiar with Lewis Black from his appearances on the "Opie and Anthony" radio show before ever seeing him on "The Daily Show" or his comedy performances. I finally got a chance to see one of his specials on Comedy Central and was laughing hysterically. This guy is extremely full of anger and energy, and knows how to take no prisoners. "Lewis Black Unleashed" is a fine introduction for those who aren't yet familiar with his stand-up.
The DVD contains four half-hour specials that broadcasted on Comedy Central (one of them being called, "Taxed Beyond Belief"). He's a very topical comedian that doesn't do the "usual" stand-up gig. He talks about politics, the state of the country, scandals, idiotic people and much more. Once he gets going on a rant, he never stops. And the great thing about this guy is that he attacks EVERYONE. This isn't a democratic comedian who only attacks the Republicans; nor is he a Republican who attacks only Democrats. He attacks ALL OF THEM--regardless of who's in which party.
Lewis Black reminds me a lot of the late Bill Hicks (and that's a good thing). He definitely has a "Hicks" influence in him--not saying that his delivery isn't original. On the contrary, he has a certain style that works for him and would not work for anybody else. He's always on target and never misses a beat when it comes to delivering the goods.
Aside from the four half-hour features, the DVD also includes Black's commentary on the Democratic National Convention and the Republican National Convention. While there's not a lot of extras, that's to be expected with a DVD like this. It's a lot more impressive than most. Hopefully he will come out with a full hour special that's uncensored sometime in the near future.
"Lewis Black Unleashed" does a superb job of showcasing this very funny comedian's talents. He's mad, he's bitter--and he's downright hilarious! If you've never seen him perform before, be sure to give this DVD a try. While the specials are only a half-hour long each, it still makes an entertaining viewing. -Michael Crane

Lewis Black - Black on Broadway (2004) Review

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to realize that our world has gone to hell. We have an inferior health care system, high unemployment, a war in the Middle East that no one wants and natural disasters that kill hundreds of thousands of people. Basically, we're screwed. So what can we do about it? Lewis Black has a solution: get ticked off.
Black's shtick is to start most jokes in a conversational tone of voice and punctuate the punch-line by yelling it angrily. After all, he's the angry guy who's angry at the world. Think of Sam Kinison in terms of style of delivery and Bill Hicks in terms of social and political commentary. Black works the crowd with all the skill and experience of a veteran stand-up comic. He does a good job of going off on tangents and then laying on a zinger that references an earlier joke. He has a good sense of timing. He knows just the right amount of beats between the set-up and punch-line of a joke.
If you can tap into Black's misanthropy (and in this day and age who can't?) he is quite funny with some genuinely laugh-out bits. On soy milk: "They couldn't sell soy juice so they called it soy milk because any time you say soy juice you actually start to gag." It's not just his jokes that are funny but how he delivers them-in an angry, exasperated way of someone in danger of having an aneurysm. What makes Black's comedy work is that its core there is a ring of honesty that he exaggerates for comic effect. He understands and acknowledges that the world is supremely messed up and that there may be nothing we can do but at least we can have some fun complaining about it.

I bought this DVD mainly for Mitch Hedberg, but it's a perfect mix of different comics. You get eight comics for a half hour each. What a deal! My family has watched it three times already. I highly recommend this DVD if you enjoy watching stand-up.

Jamie Kennedy's Blowin Up (2006) Review

Jamie Kennedy's Blowin Up (2006)

A scripted reality show which is a little too notciable at times but is actually worth the watch. Being a fan of the music Jamie Kennedy does I enjoyed when they would take a break from the show and just drive around listening to their music in the hummer. The show itself has plenty of celebrity cameos (ice t, jason biggs, bob sagget) none of which ever is less than hilarious.
Also the chemistry between Stu and Jamie is wonderful, altho Stu's constant bitterness torwards the fact that Jamie isn't focusing on just rapping but also on acting that pays for both of their lives does get quite annoying by episode 3. Stu just begins to come off as ungratefull for everything Jamie's money has got them cause in the show Stu is the jobless friend that lets Jamie pay for everything.
The extras are great and the only thing that's dissapointing about the release is that the show only lasted 7 episodes. Worth the time to check it out tho, bought it on amazon used and the price was well worth the laughs.

BLOWIN’ UP is a "comedic reality" series for the MTV Network, following actor Jamie Kennedy (The Jamie Kennedy Experiment, Malibu’s Most Wanted) as he attempts to achieve his lifelong dream of becoming a rapper. As Kennedy tries to launch his rap career, against the wishes of his agents, managers and parents, he is joined by sidekick Stu Stone.Together, the pair struggle for respect, resent each other, totally ignore common sense, and find out that while rappers have no problem breaking into acting, it isn’t so simple the other way around. BLOWIN’ UP is driven by the duo’s original music, which they write, record, perform, and hope to release as a quadruple triple platinum album.
