Mika Live Au Parc Des Princes (2008) Review

Mika Live Au Parc Des Princes (2008)
Average Reviews:

On July 4, I stood in line outside Parc des Princes for 3 hours before the start of the show. I made the trip to Paris mostly to see Mika's first stadium performance. Once I stood in the coveted front-row center place, I knew I was in for a treat. This was my third Mika show, and I knew what to expect.
The decorations were second to none - the whole stage was a clown head! Each song had the support of a full-blown circus act - acrobats, clowns, orchestra, dancers, outrageous costumes, Chinese dragons, you name it!
Mika's performance was sublime as ever - you have to see they guy live to appreciate his amazing talent. The music is fantastic, we all know that.
Still, the best part of the show was the atmosphere - the 50,000 people stadium felt very intimate, with everyone singing along to every line, and Mika really created a very familiar atmosphere and gave the audience every imaginable treat. He is a superb performer and will only get better.
After two very successful years, this show was arguably the highlight of it all! Well done, Mika, and thanks for signing my ticket afterward!

NTSC/Region 0. Live at Parc Des Prince' captures Mika's biggest performance yet, when he performed his first stadium show to over 55,000 fans at Paris's iconic Parc Des Prince stadium. A visual and musical extravaganza, the show saw Mika bring his amazing cartoon world into Technicolor life. Featuring all his hits, along with new tracks and a few surprises, this was one of the most ambitious pop shows ever undertaken and included a host of twisted circus performers - flying clowns, tap dancing astronauts, a 100 foot Chinese Dragon, can-can dancing Big Girls and much, much more. With Bonus Material containing an exclusive documentary, detailing behind the scenes action and showing us how the dazzling costumes, stunning choreography and breath-taking production all took shape; additional bonus features include the outstanding animated video for 'Lollipop' and 'Grace Kelly' as performed on Jools Hollands Hootenanny.

Samba Meu ao Vivo (2008) Review

Samba Meu ao Vivo (2008)

Five BIG Stars!! Maria Rita is the award-winning young jazz and Brazilian Popular Music (MPB) diva, who carries the vocal and musical DNA of her mother, the late great Elis Regina, but quickly established her own vocal persona. Her debut CD Maria Rita stole the show at the 2004 Latin Grammys with multiple awards and she rips a few songs from that CD, as well as from the Segundo (Second) and Samba Meu (Samba Mine) CDs. This DVD shows she is in incredible shape, has a few new tattoos, and, having given up singing barefoot, now dances all over the stage in stylish heels and eye-popping dresses beyond her norm. For one who was thought to be the non-musical one of Elis' 3 children and who never sang a note in public until age 24, she returned from NYU graduation and a non-musical career in New York City to literally burst on the São Paulo, Brazil music scene blossoming into a true international star with an awe-inspiring repertoire that is deep and varied. (Milton Nascimento was rumored to have called her in New York saying ~"I don't know what you're waiting for, {you should begin singing}"~). She is backed up by an excellent group of cohesive musicians with a lot of rhythmic drive, some from her previous recordings: like bassist Silvio Mazzucca.
From gentle 'samba-canção' to thundering 'samba-school' batucadas to jazzy MPB, she puts on a singing-dancing virtuoso display of these great Brazilian musical forms, punctuated throughout by the unique sound of the 'cuica'. She sings a 20 song love-fest to a huge mosh pit that is so knowledgeable it sings the entire show with her. The 'best of the best' includes the incredibly beauty of "Trajectoria", the mega-hits "Cara Valente" (Brave Guy) and "A Festa" (The Party), "Corpitcho" ('Fine' Body), the Latin Grammy-winning "Caminho das Aguas" (Path of Waters), "Contra Otra" (aka Tell Me Another Story), and she nods to musical godfather Milton Nascimento on "Encontros e Despedidas" (Meetings and Farewells) and then nods to her namesake rock queen Rita Lee's song about the iconic lady "Pagu". Again, there are no Elis songs, a sign of great respect for her mother's legacy. All sung in emotionally vibrant Brazilian Portuguese, occasional English subtitles for some conversation in the 'extras', great cinematography. Bravo, Maria Rita!! My Highest Recommendation. Five ENJOYABLE Stars!!
(DVD-9 (region-free), 93 minutes, NTSC with Dolby Digital 2.0, 5.1, and DTS Surround. Extras: "making of" video, and two musical videos. One fleeting verbal "oops" in the first extra. It's high time for Warner Music Latina to give complete subtitled multi-language translations of songs and conversation (English & Spanish as a minimum) , as many other labels are doing on DVDs and liner notes. This would help expand her international fan base. Otherwise, this DVD is outstanding!)

Maria Rita is known as one of the best musicians in Brazilian music. Following the success of her album Samba Meu, Maria Rita and Warner Music are excited to release Samba Meu Ao Vivo, the live concert performance of songs off the album and other songs that represent the best in her collection. Recorded live in Rio De Janiero in June, this DVD is one of the most anticipated releases of the year. The live concert demonstrates the powerful voice of this amazing singer.

Live Revolution Rock (2008) Review

Live Revolution Rock (2008)

There's some great stuff here, to be sure, but VERY few complete performances. Songs get thru two verses, then get jammed into some lousy graphics or a voice-over that gives no real input into what we're seeing. Why cut off "White Man In Hammersmith" two lines from the end? Why not have the full performances from The Tomorrow Show instead of chopping them off right before the climax? There's already a perfectly good Clash documentary out there ("Westway To The World", highly recommended if you've not seen it), so the only real reason to pick this up is to see some new footage and hear how powerful the group's live performances were. And this doesn't achieve that. Hang on to your bootleg DVDs, your VHSs taped off late night TV, the clips downloaded from wherever... That's still (sadly) the only way to get the best of "the only band that matter".
So in short, the tracklist looks good, but the product falls very flat. Only for the true completist. Sad, but true.

Brian Kohler wrote: "how can there be 13 girls in the 12 girls band? Thats craaazzzy!!!!"
Not so craaazzzy. There are 13 doughnuts in a baker's dozen and the Three Musketeers had four members, Porthos, Athos, Aramis, and d'Artagnon. Gotta learn to think outside the box.
But, more to the point, the Twelve Girls Band is outstanding, especially, I think, for their masterful renditions of Bach and Beethoven. I had my doubts that European classical and baroque music could be played appropriately on Eastern instruments, but they quickly disabused me of that idea. I felt the same way about Bela Fleck playing Bach on the banjo, but he proved that good music could be played by talented musicians on any instrument and made to sound as though it had been written for that instrument. Terrific DVD...highly recommended!

The Time Machine Tour (2008) Review

The Time Machine Tour (2008)
Average Reviews:

I need not proclaim or laud Hayes for his musical talent or artistic evolution. It is 2008; either one knows of Darren and finds him a genius or, as has been the case with most of my peerage, he's an undiscovered gem. For those in the latter category, this is an *excellent* stone from which to step. On this superbly captured closing night of The Time Machine Tour, Darren Hayes does that which so many of his fans thought wholly impossible: he improves upon perfection.
My advice to you?
Buy this DVD; see the man in all of his glory; build your own time machine (or, if you'd rather, simply put the disc on "repeat") so that you can relive the wonder.
WHAT'S MASTERFUL --
+ Hayes's fantastically unique (and well-trained) voice
+ The tour's beautifully designed video projections
+ Darren's energy & enthusiasm
+ The simple yet stylish choreography
+ The crew's lighting design
+ The artist's larger-than-life (not to mention disco-fied) paper crane
WHAT'S MEDIOCRE --
- The disc's "extras"... or lack thereof
- The number of costume changes (one)
WHAT'S MISCARRIED --
X Darren's almost anti-climatic entrance
X The fact that Amazon.com doesn't post a set-list (I'll help you out with this one :D)
The Set-List (in order of performance)

After touring constantly for 12 months, Darren Hayes is about to release a stunning live concert DVD of his most ambitious and critically acclaimed concert tour to date : The Time Machine Tour.Quietly selling out London s prestigious Royal Albert Hall, Hayes audaciously toured a show that had more in common with Pink Floyd than American Idol. The show, designed by legendary U2 and Rolling Stones designer Willie Williams featured, amongst other things, a 24 foot animatronic steel and neon origami bird and set pieces straight from a Jules Verne novel. The DVD marks the completion of a project that has seen Hayes graduate from pop star to label head and CEO of his own independent record company.A year before the likes of Radiohead decided to snub major label EMI, Hayes had announced plans to go it alone via his own label Powdered Sugar releasing his double album This Delicate Thing We ve Made with little fanfare. Just great songs, intricate art piece music videos and a blistering live band.Accountants, managers and suits and ties advised him against spending so much of his own money on such a show. But Hayes famously ignored them and took the elaborate production all over the UK and Australia. The DVD was shot in his hometown of Brisbane Australia on the final night of the tour.''This was the tour I've always dreamed of. Bowie and Peter Gabriel made the blueprint for this type of rock theatre and although it sounds morbid, doing a show like this was one of my before I die wishes. I simply had to do something like this once in my life and I couldn t think of a better moment than this period to try'', Hayes said.Costume design stitched by makers from the Royal Shakespeare Company and set pieces by the folks who put U2 in a Lemon and George Michael in front of the largest video screen ever built the show was a spectacle that had to be seen to be believed.

U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky (2008) Review

U2 Live at Red Rocks: Under a Blood Red Sky (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's hard to believe it's been over 20 years since "Blood Red Sky" was filmed. As a couple of other people have posted who were there, it was an amazing event. It felt historic even at the time.
Although the weather is exactly why it's so dramatic with the fog and steam, the entire show was very nearly cancelled because of the conditions. Like one guy mentioned, it was about 35 degrees out at Red Rocks that night, after a full day of cold drizzling rain.
I was the music editor of the local alt.weekly paper at the time, and had been in on some meetings announcing the filming. Barry Fey, the concert's promoter, had been a very early supporter of U2 and booked them into a small 1400-seat theater in Denver when they first toured the US for "Boy." So they liked Fey and wanted to work with him for this Red Rocks gig.
Unfortunately it got cold in the days before the concert. They actually did officially cancel it -- both The Alarm and U2 agreed to play a second, make-up concert the next day in a local arena (DU, I think, or maybe Regis University). But they decided to do the Red Rocks performance anyway because they'd invested so many thousands of dollars for the shoot -- the pyrotchnics (there are normally no fires atop the dramatic sandstone rocks around the stage!), the camera equipment, the technicians.
I'm sure if the filming hadn't been planned, the performance would have been cancelled in a second. I don't remember if the show as sold out (I kind of doubt it), but in the 9,000-seat amphitheater, only about 3,000 people showed up for the filming. The movie does a great job of making it seem like a full house.
It's to Bono and U2's credit that they came out roaring, and to all music fans' benefit that this performance was caught on camera.
I alternated between the 5th row in the middle and the 2nd row over to stage left, and was in awe of what was going on on the stage. U2 simply took it over and made it their own showcase gig, as if they were playing an audition for entrance into heaven. Everything was (I'm sure) unscripted, including the bit with the flag and bringing the girl on stage. It was all natural, just like the setting.
This was just at the point, as some writers have mentioned, where the band was evolving from cult status to superstardom, and they were just hitting their stride.
One thing, though: their performance was hot, but not hot enough to help you forget the cold -- I froze my butt off that night!
As for why no DVD, I wonder how much of it is because of licensing and ownership rights. I don't even know if TTS, the Denver-based production company that managed the shoot, exists anymore. So I wonder who owns the rights to the film.
Perhaps U2, and maybe they don't want it on DVD ultimately because of the made-for-TV audio and video quality.
I happened to stumble on this series of reviews and I'm glad I stopped to read everyone's comments. It brought back a lot of memories, and made me want to root around my basement for my promotional copy of the film from TTS!

This guy is amazing. After selling 20million records came with an impressive change, the album SINCERO-2003, USA Grammy 2004 award nominee, plenty of beautiful ballads, crazy rythms an a magical superb catchy cumbia turns into steady-rock written by one of the best spaniard young songwriters of nowadays, Juan Mogica(the guy, now living between NYC, Madrid and Miami-I've searching his live-is a sort of crazy Nomad guy that has been written many of the greatest pop songs of the lately 10 years for the best latin artists and himself), and the album had an state-of-the-art production by Luis Ochoa, Rene Toledo(The producer of the best Julio Iglesias albums)and a couple of guys of his 90's era. After that amazing album that have sold more than one million records, Chayanne release a couple of personal and interesting as himself albums with great success. But now, this is a real musical revolution, maybe more for the latin audience, but I think that an artist that wait 30 years to release his first Live Cd-DVD looking for the perfection or is God or is too close.Only Peter Gabriel has that kind of artistic contemplation.
Chayanne is a very smart guy.And it's an unique artist. One between a million.I have bought and enjoy a lot of live albums and Dvd shows, but this is an unique one in a lifetime experience.
Recorded at River Plate, Argentina, land of rock and the latin country with more musical cultural level, and an audience mad because the impressive show than more than 60.000 people in HD quality with all his hits you can't doubt about it!!
ONCE IN A LIFETIME,CHAYANNE IS THE BEST.AN UNIQUE EXPERIENCE.
Mozart did, Beethoven did, Peter Gabriel did(And twice)AND CHAYANNE HAS DONE SOMETHING IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME IN THE LATIN MARKET:
A SHOW PLENTY OF MUSIC WITH BIG WORDS
I can't believe it and I'm one of the lucky guys that have both editions right in front of me!!This guy is amazing.
Excuse me ladies and gentleman, but I need to share with my neighboorhood this jewel again.

RUSH: Snakes & Arrows Live (2008) Review

RUSH: Snakes and Arrows Live (2008)

I've been a Rush fan since 1912... kidding, since 1976. The 'fossil' that I am, i've probably seen them at least 40 times live beginning with the 'Farewell To Kings' tour way back when. I have all their CD's and DVD's. I have played their LP's (vinyl records) on an old 'Fisher' tube stereo receiver with 'Realistic' (Radio Shack) speakers, and 8-track tapes back in the day (70's). As an older '40-something' audiophile now thankfully making more than a high school kid did back then, I can now listen to them via high-end McIntosh equipment and Magneplanar hi-res speakers. Rush never sounded better! That said, and with my high expectations, this 'Snakes & Arrows' live DVD is INCREDIBLE, visually and sonic-wise! THIS IS HOW A LIVE CONCERT DVD SHOULD BE DONE! The camera work is stellar, with a good mix of closeups, medium range, and whole stage shots. Audio is excellent, both in stereo and in 5.1. And best of all, Rush is in absolute top form, moving, playing, and singing as if they were 25 again! This is a MUST OWN concert for Rush and/or prog rock fans!

Filmed over two performances in Rotterdam, Holland in October of 2007, Rush's new DVD Snakes & Arrows Live captures the legendary band in peak form, performing classic Rush material and nine new songs from their critically acclaimed 2007 CD Snakes & Arrows. The 2-disc concert DVD is presented in both 5.1 audio and stereo, and also included is a bonus disc of four songs added for their 2008 American tour, including "Ghost of a Chance," filmed here for the first time.Since the release of their eponymous first LP in 1974, Rush has continually expanded the definition of "progressive power trio." Guitarist Alex Lifeson, bassist/keyboardist/vocalist Geddy Lee and drummer/lyricist Neil Peart combine dazzling virtuosity, laser-beam intensity and unbridled creativity to create a cohesive whole that's infinitely greater than its parts. The Toronto-based group has become one of Canada's leading exports, with a catalog of genre-defining releases including 2112, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, Vapour Trails and Snakes & Arrows and a live show which combines musicianship, showmanship and multi-media effects that engage all the senses. Following their previous best-selling DVDs Rush in Rio and R30, Snakes & Arrows Live presents a band not resting on its considerable laurels but still earning its reputation as one of the world's best live bands - one night at a time. Michael Jackson - Live in Japan (2009) Review

Michael Jackson - Live in Japan (2009)
Average Reviews:

I wanted to see concert footage other than the all too well known Bucharest dvd with footage that showed more of the audience than Michael and his band (except when they were doing dance moves.) While that DVD is good it's not the Michael I like to see performing nor the Michael I am used to seeing perform. This particular DVD concert footage doesn't have the familiar song lineup. Not too much out the norm but there are songs from the J5 days. Not just the cute little J5's medley (I'll be there, I want you back, The love you save, etc.) but the young adult J5's. Songs like 'It's the things I do for you', 'Shake your body down', 'Lovely one' and 'Heartbreak Hotel'.
This is more of the type of concert I like because he not only danced his butt off but he sings too. Many people forget he could actually sing...and well! He mixes up his dance moves but he doesn't forget to sing here and it's a real treat. Although, by the time he gets to 'Billy Jean' he's a little winded from all the dancing but quickly recovers for a very entertaining, loonngg 'Shake your body down'. In my opinion, I see him smiling more here than any other concert footage I've seen since he was a shorty. He seemed to be having a good time here, egging the audience on to participate in a Whoo hoo fest! Or having back and forth vocal exchanges with his background singers.
Now with all this praise you may be wondering why I didn't give this dvd 5 stars. Well, it's the clarity, plain and simple. The sound is okay but it looks as if someone recorded this onto a VHS tape, put that recording onto another VHS and then copied the copy onto DVD with stereo sound. If you feel you need clarity to enjoy your concerts, then this is definitely not the one you should buy. I must admit I was very pissed because I think the concert as a whole is great but to see it in such a 70's format in this digital age is ridiculous.
I don't know who thought this was good enough to put out on the market but who ever it is needs to be shot. Twice! I set out to purchase this before Mike's passing was announced. Although, I am not happy with the way this views I am glad I purchased it. Bottom line; After watching this concert, it's understood why the brother could self assuredly say, 'I'm Bad' and no one could argue that fact!
RIP 'MJ didn't play'

As soon as I ripped open my "Where the Light Is" Live DVD I watched it all the way through. John manages to capture the audience with new tweakings of his top songs. The man continues to amaze me because he is his own worst critic and he is never satisfied, which ends up being a treat for anyone willing to be a fan for years. This DVD contains numerous songs in which he expands and elaborates his vocals..top notch John, top notch. Buy this- you won't be disappointed.

Chris Botti: Live (With Orchestra and Special Guests) (2007) Review

Chris Botti: Live (With Orchestra and Special Guests) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After this magic night in L.A. with an all-star cast of guest vocalists, Chris Botti took the show on the road -- minus the great singers -- and on five consecutive nights stopped in as many Canadian cities, including this one. The all-instrumental show was, to my memory, even better (than this original show) because of the extended solos by Chris himself and his brilliant, accompanying musicians.
Botti told his Winnipeg audience that, when he toured with Sting, he was urged to "find yourself the best drummer in the world - and make him the heart of your band."
"So I Googled," he said, "for 'The baddest- *ss drummer in the world,' and up came the name Billy Kilson." Then Botti told us: "What you are about to see, you will not believe." He wasn't exaggerating. The drum solo (I forget the tune -- doesn't matter) was beyond any musical experience I've witnessed since Oscar Peterson last performed here 20 years ago.
I turned to the person next to me and said, "This is like watching a god." At one point Billy Kilson was performing with just one hand, multiple rhythms, with alternating shadings so subtle it sounded like he was using brushes, not sticks.
The entire band stood out in the front lobby of our "Burton Cummings Theatre" and signed autographs until every last patron had gone out into that good night. I wanted to talk to other members of this all star band, comprised of Grammy-winners, including pianist Billy Childs and guitarist Mark Whitfield. Instead, I went straight for Bill Kilson.
"Who are your heroes?" Billy thought about it a minute, (he has a modest, gentle demeanor) and said, "My teacher" (a lesser-known jazz drummer - but an influential artist whose name I can't recall six months later). When he'd mentioned just that one name, I asked: "Anyone else?"
"Max Roach," he said.
The solo Kilson performs on this DVD is impressive enough; but after seeing him 'in person' on a more extended solo, I would urge jazz fans to find a way to see Billy Kilson "live and in person," -- and be prepared to re-arrange your personal pantheon of greatest-ever drummers! Good to see that the Amazon.com editorial review (above) mentions his name and the word "remarkable" in the same sentence!
The "bonus track" on this DVD concert, also happened to be Chris Botti's lone 'encore' here in Winnipeg -- a gorgeous rendition of the Arlen/Mercer classic written for Frank Sinatra. The trumpeter told us: "I worked with Sinatra for two weeks at the start of my career -- when I was fresh out of college!" It was, he said, "the greatest musical experience of my life"
For the Winnipeg audience that gave him a standing ovation, his performance of "One for My Baby" -- ALONE -- was worth the price of admission!

My son is a Bob the Builder fan so I bought this for his 4th birthday. I didn't realize it was a live show - not a cartoon. It is people playing the characters in front of a live audience. I was disappointed at first but then I saw my kids' reactions: my 1 year old daughter was smiling and clapping along and my 4 year old son was completely giddy with excitement! It was a big deal for them to see the show "live" even on a video. I would recommend this video for any fan of Bob the Builder.
