(More customer reviews)On July 4, I stood in line outside Parc des Princes for 3 hours before the start of the show. I made the trip to Paris mostly to see Mika's first stadium performance. Once I stood in the coveted front-row center place, I knew I was in for a treat. This was my third Mika show, and I knew what to expect.
The decorations were second to none - the whole stage was a clown head! Each song had the support of a full-blown circus act - acrobats, clowns, orchestra, dancers, outrageous costumes, Chinese dragons, you name it!
Mika's performance was sublime as ever - you have to see they guy live to appreciate his amazing talent. The music is fantastic, we all know that.
Still, the best part of the show was the atmosphere - the 50,000 people stadium felt very intimate, with everyone singing along to every line, and Mika really created a very familiar atmosphere and gave the audience every imaginable treat. He is a superb performer and will only get better.
After two very successful years, this show was arguably the highlight of it all! Well done, Mika, and thanks for signing my ticket afterward!

Gaelic Storm - Live in Chicago (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Since I "discovered" Gaelic Storm a bit over three years ago, I have made it a "must" to be in the crowd anytime this exciting and talented crew is anywhere in my area (West-Central Ohio). So I have been privileged to hear GS live 15 - 20 times.
Let me promise that the performance captured in Chicago on this DVD is the REAL THING. It captures the spirit, and the lively, and lovely, enthusiasm and driving Irish music that Gaelic Storm presents every time out! Watching that DVD in my living room (I wasn't in Chicago when it was recorded) frequently has me on my feet clapping (and yeah, sometimes even jumping up and down)with their amazing music. Gaelic Storm is the ONLY band that has the power to make me jump up and down since I was 17 - - - and I am now 72. The magic of their music ALWAYS draws me to the front of the stage with the teens (and some others)who comprise a most enthusiastic, yet gentle, mosh pit. I just cannot keep from jumping with the kids on such GS bell-ringers as "Courting in the Kitchen" or "The Hills of Connamara", or "Tell Me Ma", or "Beggarman" and so many others.
Yep, this DVD presents a true picture of the electric atmosphere that is generated by a Gaelic Storm concert. I wouldn't part with my copy for $100.

Max Raabe and Palast Orchester: Dance & Film Music of 1920s (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Max Raabe may not be everyone's glass of schnapps...still, since founding the Palast Orchester in 1986 as a 24-year-old music student who discovered he loved the popular music of the 1920s and 1930s, especially the songs written during the Weimar Republic, he has gone from success to success in his native Germany. He is a tall, reasonably handsome man with a trained baritone who can manage sustained high notes better than most tenors. This can give a rather odd, noteworthy texture to his singing...just like that of so many male singers of the period. His orchestra has 12 members, all male except for the gorgeous blond violinist. They always dress in formal attire, with Raabe changing from tux and wing collar to, after the intermission, full formal evening wear of white tie and tails. If he and his orchestra look like the classic, high society dance orchestras of the era he obviously loves and respects, it's because he chooses to. Most of the orchestra have been with him from the start.
While Raabe concentrates on the popular songs of the Twenties and Thirties, usually using the original orchestrations, he also writes songs himself and does pop covers of contemporary songs using the old orchestration styles. You can sample his stuff on YouTube. Britney Spears' "Oops, I Did It Again" is especially, ah, noteworthy. In other words, Raabe has a sense of irony and humor...and I suspect he doesn't think much of a lot of contemporary pop songs. So is he an old man of 44, living in a past he never had? Hardly.
In this concert piece, filmed at a packed outdoor amphitheater before 20,000 Berliners, Raabe and his orchestra demonstrate why they are as good as they are. Raabe believes less is more, and he does nothing to dispel the illusion that while he himself is contemporary, what he does comes with a clever blending of respect and humor from the past. He is dry and good-natured, but will use a cocked eyebrow or a glance as often as he'll use words. He is amusing (and brief) in his song introductions, and he notes the composer and lyric writer of each song he sings, as well as the year it was written. The pattern most often then is Raabe fronts the orchestra and sings, then he immediately steps back and leans casually against the grand piano while the orchestra pays the song again, then he steps forward for a reprise...then he steps back, applause, a bow...and he moves on to the next song with a slight smile. You need to watch carefully because quite often the orchestra will be up to something unobtrusive and amusing, but always in character.
For those who already like Raabe and the popular music of that period, or might just now be getting to know him, this DVD is a bargain at the price (and it's not cheap). Even with the applause pared down considerably, the disc runs nearly two hours. There are 32 numbers and Raabe sings each one. The audience loved it. When a downpour occurred for 20 or so minutes, no one left their seats. The songs are mainly from Germany of the period. There are four or five American songs. You'll hear irony, romantic opportunity, rueful experience and joy, even love and tenderness...and seldom much sentimentality.
The DVD has a fine, sharp color transfer. The case includes a 12-page booklet. There are three short extras showing Raabe and the orchestra preparing for concerts in New York, Tokyo and Rome. Unless you understand German, the optional English subtitles are essential.

Digimon - The Movie (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Three great short films from Japan based on the popular series come together in edited form to make 90 minutes of entertainment. And having Kari, one of the characters, narate the story gives the appearance of one story, which adds to the strength of this movie
The first movie is approximately 10-15 minutes long and details what happened four years before the first season of the show. Tai and his sister Kari see a digi egg exit from their computer screen and a small Digimon is born. Kari becomes attached to this creature. Eventually, the Digimon digivolves to Greymon and protects the city from Parrotmon.
The first movie has it's moment. Young Kari is adorable and even in young Tai we already begin to see Tai the leader of the Digidestined that we see in the first season of Digimon. The friendship between Kari and Agumon also adds a touching element to the story. It's almost heartbreaking when, after the Digimon disappears, Kari yells out, "Don't you wanna play with me anymore?"
We fast forward four years later. The second movie takes place after the first season of the show. It's unclear exactly when. Izzy, one of the Digidestined, joins with Tai to try and defeat this strange Digimon who is invading the internet. With the help of their Digimon, Agumon and Tentomon, they try to battle this strange Digimon. But this Digimon keeps digivolving at an accelerated rate. So Izzy contacts the other Digidestined and manages to get Matt and TK to help along with their Digimon...Patamon and Gabumon. Agumon and Gabumon are able to digivolve to their Mega level...and eventually join together and defeat this evil Digimon....or so they think...
The second movie has a lot of action...but every few minutes, the action goes down a bit so we can have some humor. The main subplot of the second movie involves a silly argument between Tai and Sora. Tai tried to give Sora a hair clip for her birthday and Sora thinks this is Tai's way of criticizing her hairstyle. :) Women! They always have to analyze everything. Anyway...the battles are intense and the music just great. Many songs from the tv show are played during the battle and you can't help but sing along...if you like the music, of course.
The third movie takes place four years later...Sometime during the second season. (Actually, the second season still hasn't reached the point at which this part of this movie is set. This is clearly seen because in the show, Patamon and Gatomon don't have the ability to warp digivolve yet, an ability they clearly have in this movie.) Anyway...in this part of the movie, we learn that the evil Digimon four years ago was created by Willis and is actually a computer virus. And it wasn't really defeated. It somehow escaped into the real world and has infected one of Willis' digimon. Willis is also a Digidestined and has twin digimon. Anyway...for the past four years, one of Willis's Digimon was infected with the virus and making Willis' life miserable. But with the help of Davis and the other Digidestined, they manage to defeat the virus again and free Cocomon from the virus' control.
The third movie, while not as charming as the first two, has some moments. Humor is one of it's strenght. The plot is a bit vague...but it doesn't hurt the movie in general.
So, if you are a fan of the show, you will not be dissappointed by this movie.

MPD Psycho: The Complete Miniseries (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)The third personality of a schizophrenic detective escapes his body, possesses others, and sets in motion a series of murders and dismemberments throughout a city. This is a 6-part (5 hour) miniseries directed by Takashi Miike, and is one of the weirdest, quirkiest films ever made (i.e., personality transfer, wacky detectives, stolen fetuses, people killed and planted in soil, bar-coded eyeballs, etc.). The greatest contribution is that the storyline is essentially a brainteaser that gives clues to many events that occur offscreen. Luckily, this is sharply intelligent and successfully executed since things make sense after the viewer works things out. In addition, the character of Nishizono Shinji is perhaps one of the more intriguing murderers in cinema. On the negative side, there is a noticeable lack of action and suspense sequences, but this series is very interesting for its massive quantities of originality as well as its seemingly endless layers of complexity.
It's debatable whether or not Miike intentionally used pixellations to cover up some of the gore. I think he did it on purpose because what little can be seen outside the pixellation range looked very fake. I seriously doubt that Miike would use a cheap plastic model for someone's brains. He probably used the pixellation to disturb the viewer by forcing them to use their imagination.
Buy this series. It's really good. And if you have difficulty figuring out what exactly is going on, head over to the IMDb message board for some explanations.

Mama Mirabelle's Home Movies: It's Movie Time (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)My 2.5 year old son absolutely loves this DVD. Even his little brother (8 months) enjoys watching it. It's educational and a good mix of cartoon and live footage. It's also nice that each episode is only about 15 minutes. That way I can allow him to watch the video for shorter segments, without having to interrupt in the middle of an episode.

Condor Hero: Complete TV Series (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This series starts off a little typical and a little slow (as in not good at getting you really involved) but that soon changes. I'm now a prisoner of this series until I get to finish watching it. I am so sucked in. I'm sucked in as much as usually only the Korean shows can make me.
Condor Hero is a perfect blend of love story and kicka** wuxia. Wow. It's perfect to watch with your guy/gal--both will be pleased.
The subtitles aren't so bad as others have mentioned here. They're fine. The picture quality is great. (I never saw fire look so good.)
Only problems I have with the show is the repeated insertion of music from the movies "Aliens" and "Terminator 2". Umm, they don't think we're gonna recognize it? Anyway, it's distracting.
There are a lot of CG beasties in this show too, which is pretty cool except for a fake-lookin' leopard(cougar?) and these crocodiles that have the ability to pounce 12 feet out of the water and then look rubbery. Ha! But don't let that stop you. The giant CG condor looks great!
There's lots of action, romance, characters, plot twists, surprises (one episode had so many I--I couldn't take it!)
It's just a damn good show. And the leading lady is a hottie.
