(More customer reviews)If you have a few Clapton DVDs/Videos then you've seen small parts of some of these interviews. What is interesting here is you get the entire session on some of these. You see Eric interacting with the interviewers as if the camera is not on. Plus there's a few interviews, like some looney UK TV show, that people in the US wouldn't have seen.
The portrait displayed is of a genuine man. It's very cool, while I'm sure EC isn't entirely off his guard, he is very casual.
And while the only music is supplied by a 'TV show band' playing a bad rendition of Layla for 10 seconds, this is well worth it for the EC fan.
And yeah, it does say 'INTERVIEWS' on the box. Couldn't be clearer!

The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Beacon Theatre (2003) Review

Here The Allman Brothers Band present an uncut 2 Hour and 48 minute concert recorded in March 2003 at The Beacon Theater in New York. Although a few Allman Brothers classics like Ramblin Man, Jessica, In Memory of Elizabeth Reed, and Revival are not here they are included on other video releases and what is included here is excellent and worthy of 5 stars. The 5.1 sound and video quality are excellent and the band is as tight as they have ever been. This version of the Allman Brothers Band (Founding members Gregg Allman, Jaimoe, and Butch Trucks, along with longtime band members Warren Haynes, Marc Quinones, and Oteil Burbridge, and more recent addition Derek Trucks doing a good job filling Dickie Betts' shoes) seem to be really enjoying themselves on stage and it comes through in the quality of the music.
Besides the concert, the double DVD release also includes approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes of interviews and behind the scenes footage. There is a also a very good dressing room performance of Old Friend by Warren Haynes and Derek Trucks along with a photo gallery and discography.

(More customer reviews)With that being said, this dvd is incredible, with little faults.The cinematography is absolutely brilliant.At times I felt like I was watching "The song remains the same'and 'ladies and gentlemen..'It's that good.The band does not perform like a 'band', but more like an arsenal.Luther Dickinsen (I spell that right?)does a wonderful job on guitar,making me forget about 'Mr. Ford'for a bit.Rich Robinson=PURE menace.Chris Robinson is simply put, ON POINT.My sister came in when this was on and she asked me 'Is that Jesus?'I said no, but he's got him in him.'The audio on this is simply awesome, between the 5.1 and the stereo, this is worth repeated viewings and simply a MUST HAVE.

Last Days of the Fillmore (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I was a little bit shocked that this version of the Documentary "Fillmore, the last days" isn't even the complete film.
Rhino what in the world possessed you guys to elminate the best performance in the movie? Was it money? It certianly wasn't due to a time constraint.. Did Boz Skaggs not want any involvement? I find it hard to understand that aspect as there where announcements regarding the release of this months ago on his website.. Why the sudden disappearce of his footage and involvment? The movie itself is just O.K. but when you take out argueably one of the better performances it doesn't make it any more attractive to purchase..There were so many better performances that week that got captured on audio, Only the visuals are lacking.. (where is "Brother can you spare a dime" w/t Tower of Power horns" ... damn what a shame... Rhino.. I guess this probabley is the main reason this release was held up and pushed back..Money , Money , Money, not art.
Also this would have been the perfect type of release that would have cried out for extra bonus footage and important talking heads going on and on about the Fillmore and what it meant to them..Oh well another missed opportunity..I hope Rhinos other ventures into films and their preservation at least have the sense to realize that a film is a piece of art no matter how big or small and deserves to be seen as the director intended..Not cut for time or money concerns..put it out like it was meant to be seen..truly dreadful Rhino..

John Fogerty: The Long Road Home in Concert (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Released as a belated tie-in to the recently released Greatest Hits album "The Long Road Home", Fogerty and a top notch band of professionals rock out on this DVD. Having seen Fogerty at the Filmore when he played to promote "Premonition" and that video I found this to be an exceptional concert. I personally liked the "Premonition" DVD better although this one does include material from his last studio album including the single "Deja Vu (All Over Again)" (with a touch of humor it's included twice).
The direction is sharp keeping most of the focus on Fogerty. At 61 John can still belt these classics out and his guitar playing remains top notch (he's also quite good on dobro and slide). I would have liked to see more bonus material in the form of rehearsals or, perhaps, a couple of unusual cover songs that he might have played with the band during sound checks but overall the quality of the DVD is terrific.
Now that John is realigned with Fantasy (Saul Zaentz who went from John's friend to nemesis is gone having sold the company and the company made overtures to reestablish a relationship with its most famous musician)perhaps we'll see his second solo album "John Fogerty" (aka "Shep")released domestically with improved sound and bonus tracks. It would be nice to finally have this underrated classic available with bonus tracks (perhaps the pair of singles John released just before the album was released).
If you don't have "Premonition" or would like to add to your Fogerty live DVD collection (this is only the second offically released live DVD from Fogerty)this is a must have. If you're a CCR/Fogerty fan and want to have him performing the band's best material this is also a must have.

Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble - Live at Montreux 1982 & 1985 (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)After reading for years about Stevie Ray's rejection in 1982 at the hands of the Montreux audience, I was both excited and a bit apprehensive upon the release of this DVD, knowing it would afford me the opportunity to experience the realism of the event. I've forced myself to believe that the booing was directed more at what the crowd perceived as a pretentiousness on the part of SRV, with the cowboy hat, boots, chest tattoo, and the fact that Stevie was certainly not a conventional or mainstream blues performer. Being a relatively young, not yet 28 year old white man probably didn't help either.
But as I watch the 1982 show, I am absolutely dumbstruck by the crowd's reaction. Yes, there are obviously some players in the crowd who recognize the mastery of Stevie's technique, and they initially cheer rather boisterously and with great approval. The cheering only seemed to anger the "purists" who booed all the more loudly and who seemed to have made the final word by the conclusion of SRV's set.
If you can place yourself in the moment, the final shot of Stevie walking off backstage is heartbreaking, showing bewilderment, discouragement, anger - I can't imagine what was going through his mind - he had just played his heart out!
Most of us know the rest of the story and Stevie's incredible success at bringing his music to a mass audience. What '82 Montreux perhaps shows best is how difficult it can be for anyone to present a unique and original approach to a traditional musical idiom like the Blues.
I initially intended to write a scathing indictment of the Montreux crowd. I'll just leave it at this - Frank Zappa once said that most people wouldn't recognize good music if it bit them in the ass. This Montreux crowd wouldn't have recognized musical virtuosity if it slapped them in the face.

Robert Plant & The Strange Sensation - Soundstage: Live (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been pleasently surprise with Robert Plant's work since he decided to carry on with a solo career after Led Zeppeling. He has not followed the nostalgia road trying to do do the same Zep songs over and over. He has explored his interest and vocal possibilities taking advantage of the moment. His last couple of albums, Dreamland and Mighty Rearrenger are true gems. These albums have been covered in this concert DVD.
The main let down... this concert is only a hour long. I was glued to the TV after a couple of songs and I wished it was not over while looking at the DVD menu and DVD package for secret extra bonus performances that I may have missed! I just wish some marketing genius will grant us a chance to hear and see more concert footage from Robert Plan in the future.
It is true that his voice has aged and that he does not seem to be able to hit the notes as in his 20's... but his performance does not ever tries to sell you his past but the present and he does so with an excelent band and a true and sincere performance!

The man continues to amaze me because he is his own worst critic and he is never satisfied, which ends up being a treat for anyone willing to be a fan for years. This DVD contains numerous songs in which he expands and elaborates his vocals..top notch John, top notch. Buy this- you won't be disappointed.

Live from Madison Square Garden (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought the CD and the DVD versions of the Clapton/Winwood MSG as a combo from Amazon. The CD (which I reviewed in its listing) I gave four stars to - it's very good, but now that I've seen the DVD, I'd give the DVD five stars, mainly for what it adds to the equation: the visuals. While it might seem counter-intuitive to grade musicians of this caliber by `what you can see', the DVD added such a great dimension to the show, in terms of WATCHING them solo and seeing the interplay between them, and their excellent band (these guys have serious CHOPS), that I think the DVD ups the ante, hence I'm giving the DVD 5 stars. The musicianship is excellent (they make it look so EASY....i guess that's what the best guys do when they're on their game? Plus they're clearly having a good time up there), and it's great to be able to see who's playing what (namely, that Winwood plays guitar on the first two cuts, and then on several others toward the end - he's a very good guitarist, and holds his own with Clapton, sometimes trading solos. I wasn't exactly sure what SW was playing on, just from listening to the CD - Chris Stainton is the other keysman). The picture is very good, and the camera work/composition is excellent, with nice close-ups and some striking angles where they got both guys in the same shot, Winwood on keys and Clapton on guitar. Some have pointed out editing inconsistencies w/ the visuals, but I didn't really notice it, as I was enjoying the show so much. I listened to the sound in DTS-mode (as opposed to straight 2-channel stereo) and it was excellent - really good mix - much preferable to the CD mix. I guess if you couldn't be there, this DVD (with a good A/V system) is about as close as you can get.
As for the extras on Disc 2, they're good - interviews, some background on Clapton and Winwood's 60's exploits, their time together in Blind Faith, and behind-the-scenes prep for the MSG shows. There are also a couple of bonus cuts, which didn't make the `main' concert as presented on Disc 1 - I noticed in spots, there were synch problems (from watching the drummer) between audio and video, but the extra cuts are nonetheless good (including a 7 minute "Crossroads"). Overall, the disc set was definitely worth the dough, and if you're a fan of either Clapton or Winwood, and have any inclination to buy this, then absolutely do so. You won't be disappointed.

The instrumental performances that showcase his inimitable whammy bar mastery, tones, riffs and fretboard prowess include "Becks Bolero", "Where Were You'" Blast From The East," "A Day In The Life," "Stratus," "Scatterbrain," "Brush With The Blues," Big Block," and "Angel(Footsteps)." No other guitarist on the planet can strangle, coax and caress a universe of sounds from his instrument like the incomparable Jeff Beck. His guitar and bare fingers are fused and hardwired to his heart. Jeff Beck only uses his fingers and very few effects to summon majestic tones. There are sterling guest performances by Eric Clapton "Little Brown Bird," "You Need Love" and Imogen Heap "Rolling and Tumblin" and "Blanket", and a soulful Joss Stone rendition of "People Get Ready."
