(More customer reviews)I just got my copy of the Happily Ever After DVD and watched it with my Mom. I'm glad I got it! It is so rare to see real African American couples speaking so honestly about relationships. So often the only images of Black men and women are dysfunctional stereotypes of: pimps, players, angry Black women and hoochy mamas. So it was refreshing to hear bright, articulate conversation from Black men & women from all walks of life who are working together as partners and raising whole families together. Bravo! This film shows that the President and the First Lady are not alone in being an example of stable, loving married Black couples! Thank you to the film makers and the couples who participated.

Tell Me You Love Me - The Complete First Season (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)I love HBO shows so when I found this on sale for $19.99 I grabbed it. I wouldn't recommend paying more than about $30 for it - if I'd paid more I would have been very disappointed. I haven't had an experience with a show like this before - by the second episode I thought it was one of the best TV shows I'd ever seen, up there with "Six Feet Under". It was fascinating to see a very realistic view of four different relationships, shown very realistically, even including very real sex scenes. That somehow made the couples even more human. By about the seventh episode I got tired of the characters' slow, meandering everyday lives, and the whining. I started thinking the sex scenes were just interfering with the progress of the story, and I realized, it's difficult to maintain interest in very realistic lives when you're living one yourself every day. I guess I learned I enjoy more drama and excitement in a TV show than I realized.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this latest season of McLeod's Daughters as a gift. This is not a well known series in America, rather it is an Australian made series. My friend used to watch this on one of the cable channels here until it was canceled in the USA. I located seasons 1-6 on eBay for a steal and then this Christmas I found season 7 right when it went on sale on Amazon. If you are looking for a new epic series that will keep you entertained, this may be one to take a look at. My friend swears by it, and she has gotten a few of her friends hooked on it as well.

The Mind of the Married Man - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I didn't give this show much of a chance when it first came on but ended up watching a few and got totally hooked. I had missed much of the first season, so recently I bought the 2 DVD set.
I must say that this series has gotten many very negative reviews and only lasted two seasons, but one thing I didn't know till I got the DVDs and listened to Binder and Walgner talk about the show was that it premiered on 9/11/2001, it never had a hope. It was upstaged by the biggest event of the new century.
After watching the whole DVD series I can say that this show did have a lot of heart. This struggle for a married man (of which I am one) to remain happy and loyal when opportunity runs rampant in his life is one I can relate to. Mickey has it all, a good job, smart perky wife who he obviously loves, but he is constantly tempted and pushed into outside relationships by his friends, hot young assistant, and his own insecurity.
I think Binder did an effective job of getting us married men thinking about all the crap that goes around in our heads every day. I'm not saying the acting or writing were Emmy quality, but it was a good, intriguing show and should be recognised as such.

Royal Pains: Season One (2009) Review

"Royal Pains: Season One" follows the misadventures of a doctor who finds himself at their beck and call, and it has the right mix of everything -- luxurious living in the Hamptons, weird medical crises, and a fair amount of humor.
Hank Lawson (Mark Feuerstein) is a successful young E.R. doctor in New York... until the day when a wealthy trustee dies because he focused on saving a dying teenager. Trying to distract him from his woes, his brother Evan (Paulo Costanzo) whisks him to an exclusive party in the Hamptons, at the palatial mansion of the reclusive, absurdly-wealthy Boris Rabanisch (Campbell Scott).
Then a woman nearly dies at the party, and Hank manages to save both her and Boris' treasured privacy. As a result, he soon finds himself drafted as the new concierge doctor for the wealthy Hamptons residents, along with Evan and a physician's assistant named Divya (Reshma Shetty). And his work often brings him to see Jill Casey (Jill Flint), the administrator of a local hospital.
Among the cases: breast implant disasters, an epidemic at a "bark mitzvah," a mystery shark bite, a hemophiliac teenager and his "cyberchondriac" girlfriend, and mystery ailments afflicting a senator's son, a ballerina, a horseback rider, a restauranteur, and a bestselling illustrator. Since Hank cares more about curing people than making money, he also provides care for people who can't afford the best -- but the person who needs his help the most may also be the wealthiest.
I normally can't watch medical shows -- every time I try, I develop a massive case of "medical students' disease" and end up having to go watch "Psych" instead. Fortunately, "Royal Pains" is relatively light on the medical gore (despite the "flail chest" episode) -- the biggest problem is that Hank's McGuyveresque medskills sometimes stretch credibility (he makes a microscope out of jeweler's loupes?).
Despite all the deadly medical stuff, the writers also include a lot of light humor (the hot tub disaster) and fun dialogue ("She is my right hand AND my left hand, and occasionally my brain!"). But there are some heavier currents woven into the story, such as Jill's struggles to open a free clinic for the poorer people of the Hamptons. And there's a running mystery about what Boris is doing, and what his motivations might be.
Feuerstein is quite likable and endearing as a kind doctor with a conscience, who cares more about curing people than for money or politics -- and the on-off romance he has with Flint is rather cute, if complicated by Jill's ex-hubby. Costanzo's bumbling Evan can be a bit annoying at times (especially in the season finale), but he does seem to be improving. And Shetty's Divya is awesome: a sharp-tongued, sharp-minded young woman who is trapped into an arranged engagement by her arrogant parents.
And there are some great supporting actors as well -- Scott's elegant and mysterious Boris, Christine Ebersole's kindly but eccentric socialite, and Ezra Miller's neglected teenager Tucker (who becomes a sort of little-brother/nephew figure to Hank).
"Royal Pains" has some areas that need polishing, but the mixture of medical drama and guilty pleasure is pretty addictive stuff. Just don't make Dr. Hank detox you.

Masterpiece Theatre: Railway Children (2000) Review

charming as the original 1970 movie. If you saw this TV version and liked it, you owe it to yourself to see the young Jenny Agutter in the earlier film. In my opinion, the PBS remake lacks the warmth and civility of the original.

Station Jim (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)This is another charming British BBC film in the same genre as 'Goodnight Mr. Tom' and 'An Angel for May' that is certainly suitable for ALL ages.
With a cast of notable British character actors, including George Cole, Prunella Scales (as Queen Victoria), Timothy West and Frank Finlay, one can't help but be mesmerised by the simple, yet exciting story of a small dog who is found abandoned and then adopted by a village railway porter in the Victorian age of Great Britain. There's drama too, with an orphanage fire and an assassination attempt on Queen Victoria, but needless to say the dog saves the day.
Lots of terrific train shots for steam train enthusiasts to drool over. The anamorphic 16x9 transfer (not even mentioned on the DVD cover) is exceptional.
As the cover liner notes say, " . . . a heart-warming adventure of determination, hope, love and loyalty." (Something we could all embrace in today's dysfunctional world). Add this to you DVD library if you want 90 minutes of real entertainment!

Swingtown - The First Season (2008) Review

What initially drew me to this show was my love of the 70's (I was 13 in '76) and Grant Show.
Well, what I thought? was going to be nothing more than Summer fluff, turned into a much more complex, clever, original series. As a married woman, I can relate to the angst of these couples....as a 13 year old back then, I can also relate to the storylines of the teenagers.
CBS took a huge risk putting this show on and they had a hard time finding sponsors. That is a shame because the show had literally no more provocative scenes than you see everyday on your daytime soaps.
By the last episode we were completely gripped by this story and emotionally invested in these characters. It was soooo well written, acted, directed and spot-on as far as the styles, music and the whole depiction of the time.
I was saddened to see it end....however, I am holding out hope that (my favorite show) will be either picked up by CBS or another channel....so we can continue to see how these characters lives unfold.
I am definitely purchasing this when it comes out and would highly recommend it to anyone who didn't get a chance to see the series.
It would be nice to see some Golden Globe or SAG nominations for this cast, they are ALL good!
