Soundstage Presents Chicago - Live in Concert (2004) Review

Soundstage Presents Chicago - Live in Concert (2004)

As noted in other reviews, this DVD, which features a live performance of the supergroup Chicago that aired on PBS, is recommended highly over their other live DVD, "Live by Request" which was shown on A&E. The less-than-excellent sound and visual editing on the A&E disc has been corrected on the Soundstage production and makes this DVD a worthy document of one of the great rock bands of all time. The vocals are tight and well mixed and the horns, those all-time great horns, sound fat and up front in the mix. The video editing is crisp and professional. The selection of songs finds a nice, if not usual, set of hits, blending ballads and rockers that display this group's eclectic abilities. Highlights include a blazing version of "I'm a Man" from the band's very first album, "Chicago Transit Authority". In this rendition, they've added a horn part to this tune-that-has-no-horns and the group simply, cooks. "Free" is another upbeat rocker that is given excellent treatment in this set. Original founding member Robert Lamm is especially good on this DVD, with pop evergreens, "Beginnings" and "Saturday in the Park" sounding as fresh as if they were written yesterday, not 30 or more years ago. This DVD, "Soundstage Presents Chicago-Live in Concert" is highly recommended for all Chicago fans and all fans of popular music. Nice work, Chicago!!

One of the most loved bands in rock history, as well as one of the most commercially successful-with 50 hit songs in the U.S. alone, 18 gold records, a Grammy, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame-Chicago have maintained the unflagging devotion of millions of devoted fans throughout their 37-year career. Begun with the goal of incorporating the diverse musical range of their hometown Chicago, and incorporating the big-band aesthetic that included horns which had been virtually left behind in the world of rock and roll, Chicago went on to create a sound that remains unparalleled in rock music. Incorporating rock as only one genre among the many that they drew from, the band courageously rejected the trappings of celebrity in order for the music to stand on its own. This DVD documents a live show that was broadcast on PBS in June of 2003 where they play many of their hits from throughout their long career, including "25 or Six to Four," "You're the Inspiration," "Saturday in the Park," and "Beginnings," among many others.

Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire: Live at the Greek Theatre (2008) Review

Check it OUT~! I purchased this live DVD to watch Chicago take over Los Angeles. I had been to several Chicago concerts through the years and was wondering if Chicago could still reach the high notes.
I have never seen such a pumped-up session by Chicago until they performed with Earth, Wind and Fire. I could see that the baby boom generation (yep, that's me) in the audience were trying to keep up with Chicago and EWF. Bill Champlin and Jason Scheff struggled on many notes, but they looked happy as ever while performing. It was worth every penny to watch them. Jimmy Pankow and the horns, and Tris Imboden and the percussion, gave tremendous performances. My highest accolade goes to Robert Lamm when he comfortably sang `with soul' "Does Anyone Know What Time It Is" with full support from my leading man Verdine White and EWF.
Step it OUT~! I had only heard of Earth, Wind and Fire. The closest I got to their music was hearing the Tomorrow Land Band at Disneyland play the tune "Let's Groove" through the years. I also didn't realize I was that old. :(
The first person I could not avoid from the beginning to the end of the DVD was Verdine White. I stared at disbelief at this absolutely crazed dancer. On the other hand, was he an absolutely crazed bass guitarist? OK, which is it? His attitude from the get-go was "We are the Greatest, You are the Greatest, let's Dance Together and be the Greatest Together!" He hypnotized me. :)
Earth, Wind and Fire is one of the most talented bands in the World, at any level. The singing of Philip Bailey and Ralph Johnson is absolutely superb. I was dancing like an absolutely crazed fool on the couches, on the tables and on the walls of my living room (it can be done) trying to keep up with Verdine White. As I was gasping for air, I listened to all the hits of Earth, Wind and Fire for the first time in my life. Over and over again, this band performed each song with class, style and charm. The graceful and talented Ms. Krystal Bailey gave a wonderful performance while trying to maintain Verdine White (who am I kidding).
BUY IT NOW~! You must buy this DVD. You will fly on Fire to the Windy city of Chicago for weeks after you get it. This is one of the most spectacular live performances on DVD. The ambience at the Greek Theatre with the combined sounds of both groups musically sharing their hits together was eclectic. Here is a secret. You have to see Verdine White shake it up with Robert Lamm and Philip Bailey when both groups play "September." When you play this DVD at a party, there will be M A G I C in the room. Let's Groove Together and Don't Care What Time It Is with this DVD. Did I mention that Verdine White is one of the greatest performers in the World? We Wanna Be Free - Peace.

This was one of our favorite shows and will be again as soon as Fox brings it back for Season 2!! Based in Chicago, "Thesis" (as his boss calls him) gets a job in upper management for an airline company right out of college (thanks to his thesis work)... he tries to be responsible, but things somehow always go awry... his friends have a few screws loose, his co-worker (an older woman) is constantly making advances toward him, and his boss... well, I guess you'll have to watch for yourself, because can't come up with a good way to describe him! Overall, this is a very smart and very funny fresh new comedy and definitely worth the money for the entire first season! I just checked the Fox website and Season 2 begins June 10th... I can't wait!

The Mind of the Married Man - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

The Mind of the Married Man - The Complete First Season (2001)

I didn't give this show much of a chance when it first came on but ended up watching a few and got totally hooked. I had missed much of the first season, so recently I bought the 2 DVD set.
I must say that this series has gotten many very negative reviews and only lasted two seasons, but one thing I didn't know till I got the DVDs and listened to Binder and Walgner talk about the show was that it premiered on 9/11/2001, it never had a hope. It was upstaged by the biggest event of the new century.
After watching the whole DVD series I can say that this show did have a lot of heart. This struggle for a married man (of which I am one) to remain happy and loyal when opportunity runs rampant in his life is one I can relate to. Mickey has it all, a good job, smart perky wife who he obviously loves, but he is constantly tempted and pushed into outside relationships by his friends, hot young assistant, and his own insecurity.
I think Binder did an effective job of getting us married men thinking about all the crap that goes around in our heads every day. I'm not saying the acting or writing were Emmy quality, but it was a good, intriguing show and should be recognised as such.

Wright Stuff (2005) Review

Wright Stuff (2005)

This "American Experience" documentary of the Wright Brothers is superb. The assembled band of historians and family members provide matchless insights, and the rare archival footage and evocative musical score help capture this fascinating story in a way that the printed page alone simply cannot do.Even if you're familiar with the Wright Brothers you will go away from this with an even deeper appreciation and affection for these two humble but brilliant men and the era in which they lived. While at all times factual and perceptive, the "Wright Stuff" is full of humanity and subtlety. Garrison Keillor's narration is deft and utterly appropriate, and David McCullough's brief introduction gives the production added weight and impact. Great for Wright Brothers aficionados as well as those wanting to take stock in what these two great Americans achieved not so very long ago.

I have enjoyed this show since they first started airing it! Being a Cubs fan from Illinois, it was nice to have a show that hit closer to home. Most shows like this are set in NY, but not everyone lives there!!! The characters are more developed in these seasons and I find myself identifying more with PJ. There isn't really much to say but i like watching this show and am ready for more!
