If I could change anything on this concert, I would allow Blue Magic and The Manhattans as well as the other performers to sing more of their hits. I am very excited about this concert and can't wait to have friends in so they can enjoy it with me. This concert was very well done. Thank you.

(More customer reviews)Please if any of you had read a review by a A J Wilson, claiming that this was a special edition with 3 discs, and an extra 17 performances. This is not true! it is exactly the same as the cheaper American version. Why they advertise this copy as the "Definitive DVD collection" as opposed to the American copy of "Definitive performances collection" is beyond me. I ordered this copy after seeing the review by A J Wilson, only to find its exactly the same as the cheaper American copy.

That is not to say the Diva is not as high energy as always, but that you can see her true beauty and grace in this tape filmed at the beautiful Hammerstein Ballroom in New York. If you've never seen Patti, she's a rare performer who takes you to the clouds with her first note, and doesn't let you back down until two days after the show is over. Patti starts the show in the back of the house, belting out the classic I Believe. Act I concludes with a performance of You Are My Friend/Lord's Side that'll make you swear you see Jesus clappin' his hands. Act II is Patti at her best! Backed by a full orchestra, Patti covers songs from Edith Piaf, Dionne Warwick, Ashford & Simpson and others. She closes out with a powerhouse performance of Over the Rainbow/I Believe I Can Fly. Even superstars Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey join in the fun. You'll laugh, you'll cry and then you'll start the show all over again just to experience it one more time. My only concern. . .can your soul and your speakers handle the performance?

Tina Turner - One Last Time: Live in Concert (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Well, Tina has done it for one last time! I sadly missed the actual concert tour, but I have the almost perfect VHS to make up for it. This concert took place in such a huge stadium, that it was amazing how Tina's voice overpowered the audience and the band.
This is the list of songs she did on the tape.
I want to take you higher, Absolutely nothing's changed, Fool in love, Acid queen, River deep Mountain high, We don't need another hero, Better be good to me, Private dancer, Let's stay together, What's love got to do with it, Help, Whatever you need, Try a little tenderness, I heard it through the grapevine, Addicted to love, Simply the best, Proud mary and Nutbush city limits
The sound and picture are as clear as if you were there in person. Tina and her band performed some songs faster than in the studio versions. These songs were Simply the best, Better be good to me and Nutbush. I liked the audience's approval and Tina's enthusiasm while ruling the stage for one last time. There wasn't a boring song in the programme.
Unfortunately, the DVD version has Xtra songs. The songs were edited from the VHS for no apparent reason. The editing is perfect though, because between songs, we don't wait long. Tina comes out for almost every song without a break! It shows Tina saved her best for last, and that she was a ball of pure energy on that stage.
The VHS is formatted for widescreen, just to let you know. A truly fantastic live concert and a memorable experience for any Tina Turner fan. I think this is the actual show that PBS took for their tv version a few months back, but nothing compared to this! After 4 decades of success, Tina Turner deserves to be titled "Simply the best"! A must have for everyone. Get it while it's hot.

Alicia Keys - MTV Unplugged (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)One of the most phenomenal DVDs in recent memory, "Alicia Keys: Unplugged" is one of the first MTV Unplugged DVDs released since Lauryn Hill's performance dating back to 2002. This DVD has proved to be the consummate entertainment experience. With a wide variety of music displayed in the contents of this video, which include Smooth Jazz, Pop, Funk, R&B, Blues, and Reggae, the genius of Alicia Keys & her band led by keyboardist/producer/musical director Onree Gill literally drive the audience into the past, present and the future of what true musicianship is all about. Every song is conveyed with strong skills and a sensational spirit. There is nothing but sheer quality seeping through this masterpiece! The album starts with an a capella prayer sung by Alicia which covers the traditional gospel pieces "Father, I Stretch My Hands..." & "Remember Me." As soon as the prayer posts, the band punctuated by a powerfully charged orchestra and strings team arranged by the great Ray Chew alongside resolute horn arrangements by Chops lend their staggering musical energy to the hit song, "Karma." One thing that's clearly understated with Alicia Keys is the fact that she is selfless, is always eager to get the crowd involved and offers the other performers an opportunity to access their creative intensity. Such is the case when background vocalist Jermaine Paul sings on "Heartburn" and harmonizes with Alicia on "If I Ain't Got You." Anaysha Figueroa, who sings background for Kirk Franklin, Sara Devine and Denise Stoudmire all blend their vocal talents in background and ad libs. Alicia has also really blossomed in her performance. Vocally, she digs deeper with more soul and vigor. She has so much fun with "Heartburn," "Unbreakable," and literally riffs like crazy on "How Come You Don't Call Me" [giving Prince a run for his money] and "A Woman's Worth," which slickly and gracefully covers the Isley Brothers' "Footsteps in the Dark." Other exclusive performances include, "Diary," [no need to explain that song lol!] "Every Little Bit Hurts," a reference to Nasir "Nas" Jones' classic from "Illmatic," "NY State of Mind" in her original poem "Streets of New York," (a.k.a. "City Life") which has a staggering jazz arrangement coupled with strong vocals that put you in the mindframe of Stevie Wonder's "Living for the City." "Stolen Moments" is one of my favorite songs as well as the fusion of Hip-Hop, Soul, & Reggae in the medley, "Love It or Leave It Alone/Welcome to Jamrock" featuring Common, Mos Def, Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley & Alicia's MBK team. Maroon 5's Adam Levine makes a surprise appearance with his acoustic guitar and amazing falsetto on "Wild Horses." This performance is a gem that has more than lived up to its hype and publicity. Get ready for Alicia Keys' upcoming tour & new album slated for release in the fall of 2006!!!

Sam Cooke - Legend (2003) Review

Written by Peter Guralnick and featuring spectacular interviews with many Cooke intimates like Bobby Womack, Aretha Franklin, brother LC, and Lou Rawls this documentary, that originally appeared on VH1 in a truncated form, gets to the heart of who Cooke was.
Many fans are familiar with Cooke's spectacular singing but few know of the important role he played in the Civil Rights Movement. We find out here that he was one of the first, if not THE first, artists to refuse to play to segregated audiences. We find out how he was one of the first prominent African-Americans to let his hair grow natural instead of slicking it down to appear white. We find out about the record company he started to help young African-Americans, who might be passed over by the majors, get a chance. We find out that Cooke was one of the first performers in all of pop music to acquire ownership of his own recordings (still unheard of today).
But the real meat here focuses on Cooke's mastery as a musician. The amazingly perceptive interviews manage to explain not only Cooke's importance in both gospel and pop but actually contain insight into how he did it.
Plus there's a slew of great performance footage of Cooke singing classics like "Twistin' the Night Away", "The Riddle Song", "You Send Me" and a funny, lip synched duet with Jackie Wilson on "Everybody Loves to Cha Cha Cha". Plus, there's some great film of Cooke hanging out with Muhammed Ali including the two harmonizing on "The Gang's All Here". Cooke was a crucial influence on Ali's life and thinking.
The DVD also contains some worthy extras. There are more than two hours of worth of expanded interviews. Plus there's a discography and a bio. Sadly, however there is no extra performance footage not even of his classic performance of "A Change is Gonna Come" from the Tonight Show (which is not in the documentary either).
The lack of music is the DVD's chief flaw. However, the documentary has some flaws as well. The most glaring is the way it glosses over Cooke's relationship with the controversial manager Allen Klein. This isn't surprising when you consider that Klein's company ABKCO is the producer of the DVD.
More damaging is the fact that it's too short. Though this version, at an hour and ten minutes, is longer than the VH1 documentary by almost a half hour, it's still too short to cover all of the events in a monumental life like Cooke's in the detail they deserve. For instance, Cooke's initial record contract and his later signing with RCA go by in a blur with little explanation. His appointment to the leadership of the Soul Stirrers gets similar short shrift.
Fortunately, you can find this information in Daniel Wolff's wonderful Cooke bio "You Send Me". Oustide of a book store though this is the best bio you'll find. Given the limitations the producers were under this is is a wonderful introduction and explanation of the man and his music.

The Beyoncé Experience - Live (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)Once you have seen Beyonce' Knowles live in concert, you will have a new respect for her. I had the pleasure of attending "The Beyonce' Experience" when it came to Washington, DC, and since then, I have adored her even more. When Destiny's Child released their first single, "No, No, No", it was crystal clear that Beyonce' was not only the star of the group, but also the hardest working one and the one with the most potential. With this concert on DVD, she proves my stated point. Throughout the duration of the show, Beyonce' didn't miss a beat, nor did she forget a lyric, nor did I see much sweat! She made it look so easy, and that impressed me a great deal.
When she first steps onto the stage, she asks the crowd if they are ready to be entertained. She, without a doubt, entertains for each minute of the two hours that she is performing! It's not easy to keep 20,000 people entertained for two hours, but somehow Beyonce' manages to accomplish this task.
Beyonce' performs all of her biggest hits and also gives us many doses of Destiny's Child's music. "Get Me Bodied" stands out in my mind as one of the best performances because there was non-stop choreography, very creative outfits (she had on black and yellow, hence, her nickname is Bee), and it was simply an energetic performance. "Crazy in Love", "Me, Myself and I", and "Speechless" are other highlights. I loved the simplicity of the "Flaws and All" performance. She sounded great, but she incorporated so many emotions with just one song, and it was very touching to watch (how can she make herself cry on cue, on stage??) "Irreplaceable" is another highlight. Not because she did anything fancy or gaudy, because she didn't, but I love the crowd participation she included, and I liked how she pointed random individuals out from the audience (I.E., she said, "I see you over there with that Beyonce' poster!")
In all honesty, I could go on and on boasting about this DVD, but to really bring into fruition what I am saying, you will have to see it. This concert is recommended by me, no questions. "Are you ready to be entertained?"

(More customer reviews)Truly an extraordinary DVD package which includes the very essence of the Temptations!
Most of the performances were lip-synched, but just to see them perform on these classic clips, you can truly feel the magic either for the first time if you haven't seen them during their glory days or if you are a nostalgic fan revisiting the past! Groovy shows such as the Hollywood Palace, The Ed Sullivan Show (of which I have many video clips of the Tempts on VHS) and Murray the K features the Tempts doing what they are known around the world for...doing their precise movements, singing their tight harmonies AND looking good doing it!
For me, the extras are what impress me, especially viewing the Tempts hard at work on SORRY IS A SORRY WORD, a taping for the CBS News segment, THE MOTOWN SOUND.
Otis's interview throughout the DVD and during the bonus feature is also another highlight for me. He was there through it all and is still around to tell us about the magic of the Temptations!
The acapella section on 15 of their biggest hits continues to awe and astound me! It is like they didn't need a rhythm section...the harmonies were that tight!
Complete with never-before released photos and another excellent essay by Rob Bowman, this is a must have!

Old School Soul Party Live (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Old School Soul Party is another one in a series of the T. J. Lubinsky productions that seek to capture R&B greats in live performances for posterity. This release blends mostly very recent shows with shows from earlier years and does it wonderfully. The picture quality is great. As for the sound I found the 2 channel Prologic 2 preferable to the 5.1 surround. Regardless, the DVD is excellent overall with a very generous offering of songs that could easily have been issued as vol. 1 and 2 releases.

Little Richard (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)The Little Richard Story is a credible account of the man who, more than any other individual artist, erased the word "race-music" and created popular music. Although only a small part of his life and 55 year (and still counting) career was highlighted, the DVD really captures the essence of the man - the battle between his faith in the Lord and the temptations of the world, and the development of the most important musical art form of the twentieth century - rock music. Leon is amazing in the title role, bringing to the screen the attractive, sensual black musician with the raspy, force-of-nature voice, that racist parents in America fought so hard (and so unsuccessfully) to keep from their children's senses. If you love rock, r&b or rap, and are interested in the roots of the music (the black church), this DVD is a must to add to your collection.

(More customer reviews)"Keyshia Cole: The Way It Is Season 2" is probably the most engaging and entertaining reality show on television. The BET show follows the R&B diva trying to manage her blossoming music career and repatching once strained relationship with her birth mother Frankie, a recently paroled and recovering drug addict. The show also shows Keyshia repairing her relationship with her older sister, Neffe, a single mother, who was not raised with the adopted Keyshia. The show offers a no holds barred look into Keyshia's world without filters.
This show is as real as it gets. It shows Frankie's struggles to stay clean and earning her daughters respect for abandoning them during her drug induced haze. The show also shows Neffe's struggles with being a single Mom, and although not as extreme as her mother Frankie, also got caught up in street life and making bad decisions concerning the direction of her life. Keyshia has to deal with all this while trying to maintain her hot singing career. The show has plenty of love, drama, fights, music, etc., and nothing remains out of bounds. A must see DVD.
