SnakeMan (2005) Review

SnakeMan (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This movie wasn't really that bad but it was very similar to the movie "Anaconda, Hunt for the Blood Orchid". This film is basically about a group of people who come across remains of a man who they claimed lived up to 300 years. Now they are on a quest to find this secret to long life in the Brazilian jungle where they had found him. Of course they come across some obstacles. Some of the members get eaten by the huge snake and others are captured by a tribe known as the snake people who are related to the deceased ancient man. Now they must try to get the ancient man back and return it to the snake people if they want to make it out alive. Then the battle continues.
I must say, the computer graphic image for the snake was not that good. On some scenes it look computerized and did not look believeable. But overall, this movie doesn't compare to Anaconda, Hunt for the Blood Orchid. That movie was way better.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2 - Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003) Review

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation 2 - Cousin Eddie's Island Adventure (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Take everything that was so great about the First Christmas Vacation film, toss it out the window, get a lousy cast and a worst script and you've got the makings of Christmas Vacation 2. Randy Quaid and Miriam Flynn reprise their roles as Cousin Eddie and Catherine Johnson in this horribly un-funny "holiday" film.
Though Eddie's fired right at Christmastime, his boss sends him and his family on a South Pacific vacation, hoping Eddie won't sue him after being bitten by a lab monkey. When the Tuttle family winds up trapped on a tropical island, however, Eddie manages to provide for everyone and prove himself a real man.
Incredibly the movie has a decent supporting cast including Ed Asner, Fred Williard, Eric Idle, Stephen Furst, and Beverly Garland. Never has so little been done with so much.
Why did they make a sequel to Christmas Vacation??? No Chevy Chase, no Beverly DeAngelo? This played more like a bad sitcom than a legitimate movie. Granted, it was a made for tv film, but come on! This was just pathetic.
There were zero laughs in this movie. Seriously....zero laughs. Maybe a snicker or two but that's it. That is quite an achievement! This is nothing more than a slapped together mess meant to cash in on the name of its predecessor. National Lampoon should be cursed to watch this one over and over again.

When Cousin Eddie joined Clark Griswold and his family for National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, the movie quickly becaume a holiday institution. An institution, of course, is where many think Cousin Eddie should reside. Randy Quaid again plays crude but lovable Eddie and Miriam Flynn returns as his wife in another comic skid on the Vacation banana peel. In a way, Christmas has always been a test of survival for Eddie and his brood. And that's truer than ever when they receive an expenses-paid holiday tour of the South Pacific and end up shipwrecked on a remote island. Fred Willard, Ed Asner, Eric Idle in a zany cameo and more join in this season of comfort and joy. Which means little comfort for Eddie. And lots of joy for Vacation fans.DVD Features:OuttakesTheatrical Trailer

It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown (Remastered Deluxe Edition) (2008)
Average Reviews:

I have grown up watching this movie every Halloween since age 5. Honestly, I've probably watched this video more than any other video I own and I love it EVERY SINGLE TIME--never a dull moment! If you love Schulz, Snoopy, the Peanuts gang and/or Halloween you simply must own this! It deserves the highest possible rating; five stars doesn't do it justice. It has perfect editing, illustrations, music, voices, script--EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS PERFECT! I've done over 70 reviews and I do believe this is the first time I have EVER used the word perfect in one of them!
My favorite scenes are the Snoopy ones, especially the World War 1 Flying Ace (flying doghouse scene with great colors) and the piano scene at the Halloween party where Snoopy dances and marches to the happy song and then changes moods and cries to the sad song..repeating twice. I laugh out loud til I cry every single time! YA GOTTA LOVE SNOOPY! He is so intelligent but sensitive too! What a dog!
My second favorite character in this video is Sally--the way she pitches a fit in the pumpkin patch and says "I was robbed!" then threatens to sue Linus--so hiliarious also! Again it makes me laugh til I cry!
Lucy the bossy and sometimes downright grouchy (to put it mildly) shows a soft side the way she wakes up in the middle of the night, goes to check on Linus and finds his bed empty, then gets dressed and goes to get him freezing in the pumpkin patch and puts him to bed without a word. The ending with Charlie Brown and Linus is endearing as well.
Each character is so unique and entertaining! JUST GET THIS VIDEO! TRULY A TIMELESS CLASSIC! YOU'LL LOVE IT--TRUST ME!

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail (Widescreen Edition) (2009) Review

Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail (Widescreen Edition) (2009)
Average Reviews:

"Tyler Perry's Madea Goes To Jail" is great! This is how the story goes: After a high-speed freeway chase puts Madea in front of the judge, her reprieve is short-lived as anger management issues get the best of her and land her in jail. A gleeful Joe couldn't be happier at Madea's misfortune. But Madea's eccentric family members the Browns rally behind her, lending their special "country" brand of support. Meanwhile, Assistant District Attorney Joshua Hardaway is on the fast track to career success. But Hardaway lands a case too personal to handle - defending young prostitute and former drug addict Candace Washington - and asks his fiancee and fellow ADA Linda Holmes to fill in on his behalf. When Candace ends up in jail, Madea befriends the young woman, protecting her in a "motherly" way as only Madea can.
The cast led by Tyler Perry (back in his roles as Madea / Brian / Joe), Derek Luke (as Joshua Hardaway), & Keshia Knight Pulliam (as Candace Washington) is great! The directing and story and screenplay by Perry (who also produced) (who also produced and directed and wrote the stories and screenplays to "Madea's Family Reunion" (2006, also starred as Madea / Brian / Joe), "Daddy's Little Girls" (2007), "Why Did I Get Married?" (2007, also starred as Terry), "Meet The Browns" (2008, also starred as Madea / Joe) & "The Family That Preys" (2008, also starred as Ben), he also wrote and produced "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman" (2005, also starred as Madea / Brian / Joe) is great!
The music by Aaron Zigman (who also did the music to Perry's "Why Did I Get Married?", "Meet The Browns", & "The Family That Preys" is great! The cinematography by Alexander Gruszynski (who also did the cinematography to "This Christmas" (2007) is great! The film editing by Maysie Hoy (who has been doing the casting to Perry's films since "Daddy's Little Girls") is great! The production design by Ina Mayhew (who has been doing the production design on Perry's films since "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman") is great! The casting by Kim Hardin (who also did the casting to "This Christmas") is great! The art direction by Mark Erbaugh (who also did the art direction to "The Family That Preys") is great! The costume design by Keith G. Lewis (who has been doing the costume design to Perry's films since "Diary Of A Mad Black Woman") is great!
This is an great comedy that is funny and heartwarming at times. This is another hit from Tyler Perry. Madea's back and funnier than ever.

The very basic packaging tells you that this is a no frills DVD. Many of MJ's best videos are presented and that is all you get. No fancy menu or insert. No live performances, interviews, commercials or still gallery. Nothing. Not even a discography. This doesn't cut it in this day and age of DVD. The videos are great, but this is hardly a difinitive collection. Expecially since all of these (save "You Rock My World") are already available on other discs. And why do video collections keep getting released with shortened or re-edited videos? We want the FULL original video ok! Is that too much to ask?
It's hard to go wrong with an MJ music video and these are all great. But this DVD could have (and should have) been definitie. Instead it's just yet another collection of videos collectors already have.

The Soloist (2009) Review

The Soloist (2009)
Average Reviews:

This movie is primarily about the relationship between the weary journalist and the homeless artist, and Downey and Foxx give great performances. It sensitively deals with issues of charity and friendship in ways that challenge conventional ideals, and I liked the fact that in the end, Downey's character seems content to stop playing the role of "rescuer" and instead lets events play out to their natural conclusion. In fact, Foxx's character, for all the mental distress he faces, seems more grounded at times than Downey's character, and you might wonder whether the soloist refers to the cello virtuoso or the journalist who seems to learn what it means to be a friend rather than going solo through life. In that respect, it's a show that operates effectively on more than a superficial level.
Now if they could just have spent a little more time coaching Foxx on his fake cello-playing skills...alas.

Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey Jr. and Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx star in an extraordinary and inspiring true story of how a chance meeting can change a life. The Soloist tells the poignant and ultimately soaring tale of a Los Angeles newspaper reporter who discovers a brilliant and distracted street musician, with unsinkable passion, and the unique friendship and bond that transforms both their lives. The remarkable performances make for an unforgettable experience in what is hailed as "a courageous and uncompromising film" (Gene Shalit, TODAY).

I wasn't really sure what to expect with Robert De Niro in a more comedic role and the so-so reviews of Meet the Parents. Well, let me be the first to tell you that all theses reviews were wrong and De Niro shined in his role as the father. The toilet humor of There's Something About Mary is still present in Meet the Parents--I won't give any of it away since the shock factor is what makes these scenes so hilarious. Ben Stiller is wonderful as Gregory, the misguided yet well-intentioned boyfriend of Jack's daughter. This movie had so many well placed comic moments that I never really stopped laughing. Robert De Niro and Ben Stiller make such a great pair because of the fact that they are such polar opposites. De Niro's paranoia feeds Stiller's own paranoia and makes for a lot of awkward but humorous confrontations. Their misunderstandings range from the hidden meaning of "Puff the Magic Dragon" to premarital relations. Mixed in somewhere within the gags and the shock humor is a nice romance story that is somewhat generic but never overshadows Stiller and De Niro's relationship. Meet the Parents is one of the funniest movies I have seen in a long time and I implore you to see it.

Being the chihuahua lover that I am, I was first in line at our local cinema to see this flick!
I loved it from begining to end, however it wanst exactly what I expected. From some of the previews it looked like there would be lots more chihuahuas in most of the film, but for the most part it is two chis (Chole and Papi) along with a German Shepard. Towards the end is about 5-7 mintues of films with LOTS of chihuahuas, include a bit of history about the breed, some pretty cool looking aztec ruins, and chis of every shape and color, including brindles, blue, chocolates, blacks, merles, spotted, fawn and even long coats!
Has great themes about finding your roots, not giving up on your true friends and helping others when they need it the most. Also, that no matter what your situtation is, there is a place where you belong.
I went with a friend from work (we are both adults) and we both loved it. We laughed and cried, and agreed we will see it again and buy it when it comes to video!
Also, kudos to Disney. At the end of this film there is a note about how each pets deserves a permenant loving home, and if you purchase a dog, to do research on the breed!

Bored to Death: The Complete First Season (2009) Review

Bored to Death: The Complete First Season (2009)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jonathan Ames (Jason Schwartzman) is a freelance writer with one novel under his belt, a 447,000 rating on Amazon, and serious writers' block. He writes the occasional article for his friend George Christopher (Ted Danson, in a hilarious role), the bored-to-death editor of an Esquire-type magazine. Meanwhile, his buddy Ray (Zak Galifianakis)is a frustrated graphic novelist, comic-strip artist trying to hawk his work, with meager results. Zak's girlfriend Leah controls his every move, while Jonathan's girlfriend Suzanne moves out after Jonathan refuses to clean up his act according to her straight-edge wishes, i.e., no drinking, no pot smoking.
After losing his roommate/lover, Jonathan is unable to write, and suffers from a serious case of the doldrums. He mopes around his apartment, doing very little but reading Raymond Chandler novels and getting smoked up. Schwartzman is very good at conveying this bright-guy-turning-into-a-loser character. Apparently inspired by the Chandler novels, he decides to try his hand at being a private eye himself. Despite having no background whatsoever in police work, he figures he has nothing to lose and advertises on craigslist as an "unlicensed" private detective. He hopes that by doing this he will pad his bank account, as well as find inspiration for his writing. Thus, the hilarity ensues.
The series is stylish, with lots of allusions to Raymond Chandler potboilers, complete with gorgeous, troubled dames, topcoats, hats, and all the Chandler-esque parafernalia. Jonathan hasn't a clue as to what he's doing, but somehow his escapades all work out, with George and Ray as his Keystone cops sidekicks. Each episode is done tongue-in-cheek, requiring a large dose of literary license from the viewer. If the viewer has a sense of fun and enjoys a well-crafted farce, this isn't hard to do. I hope this series catches on, because in my household, this is half an hour of very entertaining television. All the actors do a fine job, my favorite being Ted Danson, who seems to thoroughly enjoy acting a fool and probably getting paid enormous amounts of money to do so. Some of the scenes are sidesplittingly funny; others have a Woody Allen-ish charm, as Schwartzman is exactly the kind of appealing nebbish that Allen always played. I hope for more "Bored to Death" episodes of this caliber in Season 2.

The series is set at the Elite Way School, a prestigious private boarding high school near Mexico City (In Rebelde Way it was a middle school). The school's faculty and the parents often have their own subplots as well. One feature of the show is the random use of English words and phrases, commonly used by fresas. One of the series' major plot lines revolves around a group of students forming a pop band. The actors, who play the members of this band, are also in a real band, abbreviated as RBD to distinguish it from the show. RBD performs most of the music used on the show, and has been extremely successful in its own right, becoming one of the highest-grossing acts in Mexico and touring internationally.

Puppetmaster vs. Demonic Toys (2004) Review

Puppetmaster vs. Demonic Toys (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Look I know Full Moon went under but who knew that the next time we'd see the Puppet Master dolls it would be this awful? The plot is worse than even the worst of the Puppet Master original series titles, the acting makes the Full Moon actors look like Oscar Winners and the puppets aren't even close to the real deal!
I guess the easiest question I have is, Why even buy the rights to a franchise if you're not going to use the signatures of the franchise in the first film you make with it? Blade, Six Shooter, Jester, Pinhead are replicated in this movie so poorly it looks as if an 8 year old art student made them. Pinhead's hands even appear to be clay.
Worse is the movements. They don't have any of the fluent movements that were trademark to how the puppets looked real and there are scenes where there are massive amounts of strings showing everywhere. It's embarrassing to say the least.
The puppets weren't talkers before but they made sounds. This time they were completely mute. I wish I could have said the same for Corey Feldman who used to know how to act but in this movie comes off so over the top it's impossible to care about him or feel any sense of empathy for his character oncesoever. Most of the time you're wishing you had a gun to shoot yourself with so you could end his speaking parts.
The Demonic Toys look different and if possible even more cheap than before also. Full Moon might not have had the greatest actors, scripts or special effects but they usually spent a sufficient amount of time, money and energy on making the dolls (the stars of their movies) look good.
There is another small glitch in this movie that will annoy the fans of the Puppet Master franchise. Somehow Toulon's blood is needed for the formula to keep the dolls alive. The formula is now injected into holes in the back of the puppet's necks. For casual fans this is not a big deal, for longtime fans they know Toulon's blood had nothing to do with the formula and in part Three Toulon clearly injects them in the front of the neck area in a way that made it clear that as long as they got an injection, the puppets were fine.
Vanessa Angel is not a bad actress and has a million dollar body but she's stuck in a role and a movie that screams "I just want to collect a paycheck".
The Puppet Master theme music is blatantly absent as is the entire feel of the Full Moon series. The actors are horrible and seem to have to pause through lines in order to spit out the script they were supposed to remember and although the Demonic Toys franchise is much smaller I'm sure their fans felt disrespected by how marginalized their toys were to Angel's character, Sharpe.
Full Moon had this project announced before they folded. If only they had completed this then and not let Sci Fi skimp and cheat their way into trashing two beloved cult franchises with one movie that is so blatantly bad that it even loses the appeal of goofy and cheesy that so many second and third rate horror films fall into.
Avoid at all costs if you like either series.

Having viewed Pasion de Gavilanes in real time, I found the DVD to be a wonderful recap of the story. Naturally, in the allowed time it would be impossible to see all of my favorite scenes, but in a "cliff note" fashion I was able to see the couples coming together and to follow the storyline. As a non-hispanic, the fact that the caps were available in English only made the experience more enjoyable. Given the number of times I have rewatched PDG, and translating from the caps, I should know the dialog by heart. The behind the scenes clips and interviews were a treat and I was very pleased with that. Finally, the quality of the DVD picture was superb. I found myself wishing Telemundo would release the novela to the public in its "total" package (30+ DVDs) and let us worry about how to pay for it. LOL

El Manantial (2003) Review

El Manantial (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had not seen a telenovela since 1997..and honestly the only reason why I bought this DVD was for one reason...the incomparable and talented DANIELA ROMO played Doña Margarita Ramirez, the bitter and evil woman in "El Manantial".

The story follows 2 rivaling families who continually bicker about the piece of land they own. As both their children grow up and eventually fall in love a'la "Romeo and Juliet"..they soon discover that their love can't be, as gradually hidden drama surfaces. Lots of suspense and never a dull moment on this soap opera. Adela Noriega plays, yet again, a sweet girl who is tormented by another individual and suffers. I guess we can't expect anything else from Adela, as she's been playing the same character for years. Mauricio Islas was not very convincing as the hunk male lead, but luckily the story rarely revolves around him.

The storyline that stole the novela, in my opinion, are that of the Ramirez (Mauricio's character's parents) estate. Justo Ramirez (Alejandro Tomassi) and Margarita Ramirez (Daniela Romo) own a big estate in their town and possess alot of control over it. Justo's incredibly cold and heartless to everyone, including his own wife, who for unknown reasons secretly hates him, and as the story unfolds we'll realize why. Margarita's character, played AMAZINGLY WELL by Daniela Romo, is the most layered of all characters. She's calculating but at the same time compassionate. She knows how to get what she wants but at the same time still feels for Adela's character, whom her son is in love with. Towards the end of the movie, Margarita suddenly shifts from villain to heroine.

I have read complainnts about this DVD being too short. I for one can guarantee that I never felt that it was short. If anything, it's a good thing that this DVD has been edited to only 7 hours, as they have cut out all the filler scene. Anyone who has seen telenovelas can tell you this, they prolonge story lines and dialogue to stretch out the telenovela's run and to have more room for advertisments. That's the nature of the business and I am glad that this DVD has NO FILLER, ALL KILLER scenes. You shan't be discouraged. And yes, they have taken out the Luis Miguel theme song "Amor Amor Amor" as they didn't get permission from WEA Mexico. It's OK, we can do without it.

Buy this DVD, you won't regret it. I found it hard to stop watching after a while. I hope they release more entertaining and trashy soap operas with consequential drama like "El Manantial". BRING ON "CUNA DE LOBOS"!

Antorcha Encendida (2005)
Average Reviews:

Televisa makes it very difficult for me to take them seriously when they release chopped up versions of their best telenovelas in one disappointing DVD box set. I'm not a big fan of most of their contemporary telenovelas (especially their recent ones), but I love their period pieces and costume dramas and La Artorcha Encendida (The Lit Torch -- it has a better ring to it in Spanish) is right up there in quality and romance as Amor Real (Real Love), Corazon Salvaje (Savage Heart), Ramona, Yo Compro Esa Mujer (I Shall Buy that Woman) and Alborada (Break of Dawn) -- the latter of which is currently on the air here in the US. I loved watching this intense love story set against the backdrop of the Mexican war for independence in early nineteenth century starring a younger Leticia Calderon, Ernesto Laguardia and Humberto Zurita (who was brilliant as a villain in his most recent period piece called Los Plateados). I also got to see other heavyweights like Enrique Rocha, Carmen Salinas and Juan Ferrara. The brilliant Christian Bach is also featured in this telenovela, but most of her scenes must have been cut off or something because she scarcely appears in this DVD. The scenes are choppy and uneven, the music score is different from the one I remember when it aired on Univision and, if you can believe it, the ending is cut off. We are left high and dry when it comes to knowing what happens to the villains. All in all, this has got to be the worst DVD box set Televisa has ever released. I give five stars to the actual serialized novel because it is one of the best stories I have seen, but I give one star to the actual DVD. I'll be very wary of picking up DVD sets from the popular Mexican production company next time. I hope they will release unabridged or better edited box sets in the future because I like the idea of owning my favorite telenovelas.

Mexico's most talanted actress ever Lorena Rojas(Como en el cine) and Telemundo's hotest male star Mario Cimarro(Pasion de gavilanes) are coupled in a mysterious story of passionate, death defeating love! The chemistry between Rojas and Cimarro, as newspaper Miami Herald wrote, "makes the chemistry in Mr. & Mrs. Smith seem like kindergarten frolic".
This great telenovela was writen by Colombia's "master of mystery" writer Julio Jimenez, same one who wrote hits like Pasion de gavilanes, La viuda de blanco and Yo amo a Paquita Callego and it's the story of a man who comes back from the dead in a new body for the woman he loves only to find that she is with another(and always has been!). A love-hate relashionship with drive them to a passionate afair and the revalation of secrets that will leave you with an I-did-not-see-this-one-coming look!
Lorena Rojas is simply enchanting as the obscure Isabel, she provokes, intrigues and leaves you breathless with her brilliant acting! From the other hand the villano of the telenovela Martin karpan with his strong, passionate acting is sure to shake the viewer up!
Many other big telenovela and Latin cinema stars take part in the telenovela with Roberto Moll, Pablo Azar, Diana Osorio and Jeannette Lehr standing out!
