The Soloist (2009) Review

The Soloist (2009)

This movie is primarily about the relationship between the weary journalist and the homeless artist, and Downey and Foxx give great performances. It sensitively deals with issues of charity and friendship in ways that challenge conventional ideals, and I liked the fact that in the end, Downey's character seems content to stop playing the role of "rescuer" and instead lets events play out to their natural conclusion. In fact, Foxx's character, for all the mental distress he faces, seems more grounded at times than Downey's character, and you might wonder whether the soloist refers to the cello virtuoso or the journalist who seems to learn what it means to be a friend rather than going solo through life. In that respect, it's a show that operates effectively on more than a superficial level.
Now if they could just have spent a little more time coaching Foxx on his fake cello-playing skills...alas.

Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey Jr. and Academy Award® winner Jamie Foxx star in an extraordinary and inspiring true story of how a chance meeting can change a life. The Soloist tells the poignant and ultimately soaring tale of a Los Angeles newspaper reporter who discovers a brilliant and distracted street musician, with unsinkable passion, and the unique friendship and bond that transforms both their lives. The remarkable performances make for an unforgettable experience in what is hailed as "a courageous and uncompromising film" (Gene Shalit, TODAY).

Charlie and Lola, Vol. 1-8 (2008) Review

Okay, so I loved Charlie and Lola the first time we flipped on Disney for Baby Jane, but if it's possible, I have fallen further in love with this show since I bought the first two seasons in boxed set. Here's why:
***The children are thoughtful and kind to one another (no bratty sass);
***Charlie and Lola are loving brother and sister in an age where siblings are rivals;
***They work through their problems together;
***They use their imaginations, in fact, the show's foundation is based on using the imagination;
***The kids are adorable, realistic to their ages, and have wonderful senses of humor.
16-month old Baby Jane watches an episode before bedtime with a big grin and smiling eyes, and I feel good about what she's absorbing. Heck, it's even soothing to have on in the background while I'm doing dishes. We've watched through volume five, and so far picture and sound quality has been excellent. I'll be watching this show when I'm fifty, it brings such a good feeling of love and humor into our home.
Thank you Lauren Child. You must have a beautiful heart.

A Boyfriend for Christmas (2004) Review

A Boyfriend for Christmas (2004)

I caught this movie on TV last year and thought it was very cute-- just like those romance novels I read. So, when it came out on DVD, I had to buy it.
She is the girl-next-door type who made a wish a long time ago for a boyfriend for Christmas and has pretty much given up on the wish ever coming true. He is a workaholic attorney whose path happens to cross hers--- and not in the best way. A little mistaken identity and holiday magic help the two fall in love. But, once the true identity is revealed, will all bets be off? You'll have to watch and see.
I would have given it 5 stars if I hadn't found myself thinking, "How did they get so much time off from work during the holidays?" (smile)
A delightful movie. Perfect for a chilly night when you need some help getting over your own bah humbug feelings.

Walter and Henry (2001) Review

Walter and Henry (2001)

To review this movie, I have to make a disclosure. When she was seven years old, a little girl I'll call "Sara" came to play with our kids; her mother was diagnosed as a schizophrenic. We told her that if her mom was off her medications and didn't fix any meal, "Sara" could come and eat with us. Eventually, she also had a bed at in our home, and until we attended her high school graduation she ate several meals a week with us and often slept at our home. She loved to celebrate Christmas with our family. "Sara" still considers herself (as do we) to be our fourth daughter. [Now, "Sara" is attending university and working to get a Ph.D. in one of the sciences!]
When we watched "Walter & Henry," it was with a lump in our throats. To put it simply, Henry was a boy version of "Sara." Both of them truly loved their parent, no matter how sick they became. Both, in very real ways, had to become the parent. Both also had family issues between the grandparent and the mentally ill parent. Both also did not have another parent to balance or compensate for the sick parent. Psychologically, Henry and "Sara" were also uncannily similar. The only thing I can conclude is that the writers of the movie must have had some real-life similar experience because they did a fantastic job of creating a realistic portrayal of a child's experience with a mentally ill parent.
Parents might wish to show this movie to any of their children who have a friend with a mentally ill parent, and then discuss how they should treat their friend. The only caveat I have about this movie is that sometimes the language is a bit coarse - maybe realistic, but I don't think it added anything to the story.
Only a person with a heart of stone would not appreciate this movie.

This is a great family movie starring Josh Hutcherson who is my
daughter's favorite actor. We watched the movie together and
I would definitely watch it over again!!

In WILDER DAYS, Tim Daly dusts off his old-lady persona from "Wings" to play a sandwich-generation sufferer whose heart is in the right place, but who's a little too grouchy and overwrought .
