(More customer reviews)I heard about this British series from some entertainment magazines, but nothing could have prepared me for this. Fast-paced, colorful, eclectic cast, incredible music, and the dialogue! I've seen nothing like it, but it's hip and poignant at the same time. Two gay black fathers, separated and on the verge of divorce, raising a spitfire of a seventeen year old straight son with two gay best friends an angst-ridden and horny girlfriend with a sexy lesbian best friend and an awnry loud-mouth father...I could go on, and I will: the brassy recovering drug addict and her earnest boyfriend, the plucky lesbian couple, the homophobic ex-military man and new gay boyfriend, etc. etc...This show has it all. And the extras on this DVD are great...Extensive interviews with cast and the creator, behind-the-scenes footage AND the amazing soundtrack album with over 15 songs on it...This is a bargain...a real treat. I can't give this a higher recommendation. The whole package is stellar...A family sitcom for the not-so-new-anymore millenium...Forget QUEER AS FOLK, this is the real treasure of a British import.

A Dirty Shame (NC-17 Rated Theatrical Version) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Many have accused John Waters of kissing up to the mainstream for the past decade or so, starting with "Cry Baby" and "Hairspray," with their less than shocking view of the world. Where, they cried, is the delightfully perverse brain that gave us "Pink Flamingos?"
Be careful what you wish for, because "A Dirty Shame" will bring it all back home. Perfectly cast, brilliantly acted and a total grossfest, this is the best and most outragous movie Waters has done since, well, "Female Trouble." Tracy Ullman and Chris Isaak play the Sticklers, a pair of "neuters" who are completely against all things sexual. A chance accident makes Ullman a sex-addict to the church of Johnny Knoxville (who finally proves himself a movie star here) and his merry band of perverts. If there's a fetish that can be exploited or made disgusting, you'll see it here.
There are so many laugh out loud sexploits here, that I can't even begin to describe them. You'll be wincing as you laugh, as the moments accelerate in the movie from funny -- to weirder and funny -- to beyond the bizarre. You'll hear Tracy Ullman describe oral behavior in so many ways that you'll lose track. You'll discover what a "bear" is. You'll see Chris Isaak leer so salaciously that you'll wonder what directions were being given behind the camera. And you'll hear so many hysterical 50's and 60's sexually oriented novelty songs that you'll be looking for the soundtrack by the end of the week.
A word of warning though. If you are in the least bit prudish, then "A Dirty Shame" will have you fleeing the movie in mortal terror. Now if THAT sounds like the kind of NC-17 rated 90 minutes of comedy that would delight you, then you need a little "Shame" in your life.

Jack of All Trades - The Complete Series (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)"Jack of All Trades" puts Bruce Campbell into the perfect role as a sort of swashbuckling hero that reminds me quite a bit of the Daffy Duck "Scarlett Pumpernickel" cartoon directed by Chuck Jones. Appointed by Thomas Jefferson to prevent the French from further colonizing, Jack tangles with Napoleon (played by Vern Troyer aka Mini-Me)in a number of episodes. He also rescues Ben Franklin from Napoleon who hopes that Franklin will come up with the ultimate weapon and Jack appears as a masked folk hero the Daring Dragoon (great name)when he tangles with the French governor Croque. His contact is a beautiful British agent (Angela Dotchin). Aside from the great chemistry between Campbell and Dotchin, the show has all the entertaining trademarks of Equal bits adventure and comedy the show was the best part of the ACTIONPACK hour that also featured "Cleopatra 2525". The DVDs look extremely good with nice full screen transfers and colors that pop off the screen.
Unfortunately Universal has decided to release the full series without any extras. There was a review that mentioned that Campbell was against the release of this show and Brisco on DVD--nothing could be further from the truth. He was probably referring to a money issue (or being sarcastic)and the haggling with Universal. Also, the show had such a small cult following I'm sure that impacted the release as well. Campbell was executive producer of this show with Robert Tapert and Sam Raimi.
Delightfully funny "Jack" makes a perfect compliment to "The Adventures of Brisco County Jr." (through no accident its being released the same day at a much lower price--because there are no extras--Universal is hoping that Campbell/Brisco fans will see this, see the price and say, "hey this looks pretty good, too". Can't fault them for a brilliant marketing ploy).
The show is nicely packaged in those slimline DVD holders so they won't take quite as much space on your shelf.

Aerosmith - You Gotta Move (Amaray Case) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Why why why why why do the clowns who edit these "live" concert dvd's continually insist on ruining the music by overlapping interviews and other bull sessions into the songs themselves? Didn't Sony learn their lesson after Black Sabbath's "Last Supper" editing disaster? Am I wrong to think that the job of a concert video should be to give the illusion of actually being at the event? What fan in actual attendance would sit still if during every song lead in, Steve Tyler turned down the volume and talked about his life experiences? I don't know about you, but it would annoy the hell out of me! It's a shame because You Gotta Move could have been a great dvd. The sound quality of the music is excellent! And I was very impressed with the track selection. Sure one could argue that there are several key Aerosmith tunes missing from the set list. But to play every hit from Aerosmth's huge library, the dvd would have to be 12 hours in length. What makes this dvd fall flat on its face though is the totally inexcusable editing job. There's hardly a track on the entire dvd that isn't partly interrupted by the band members chatting about things we already knew and that could have easily been added in the bonus section. If that's not annoying enough, the camera angles change each and every second or two throughout the show. It's kinda like watching while riding a spinning merry-go-round? You never really see anything but a blur as it passes by. As for all the fan shots (almost half the dvd), I have to wonder if there were any plain looking/non model types/small chested people in the crowd at all? You wouldn't know it by where the camera men had their cameras pointed all night? lol Anyway, being a die hard Aerosmith fan aside, i'm very disappointed that they dropped the ball with their first official live dvd. It would have been so cool to sit back and enjoy an awesome show without feeling the need to throw a hammer at the tv. 2 stars for the good music that WASN'T interrupted with gab and for the bonus audio cd that's music, music, and nothing but the music! As for the rest..arrrgggghhhhhhhh!

Puppetmaster vs. Demonic Toys (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)Look I know Full Moon went under but who knew that the next time we'd see the Puppet Master dolls it would be this awful? The plot is worse than even the worst of the Puppet Master original series titles, the acting makes the Full Moon actors look like Oscar Winners and the puppets aren't even close to the real deal!
I guess the easiest question I have is, Why even buy the rights to a franchise if you're not going to use the signatures of the franchise in the first film you make with it? Blade, Six Shooter, Jester, Pinhead are replicated in this movie so poorly it looks as if an 8 year old art student made them. Pinhead's hands even appear to be clay.
Worse is the movements. They don't have any of the fluent movements that were trademark to how the puppets looked real and there are scenes where there are massive amounts of strings showing everywhere. It's embarrassing to say the least.
The puppets weren't talkers before but they made sounds. This time they were completely mute. I wish I could have said the same for Corey Feldman who used to know how to act but in this movie comes off so over the top it's impossible to care about him or feel any sense of empathy for his character oncesoever. Most of the time you're wishing you had a gun to shoot yourself with so you could end his speaking parts.
The Demonic Toys look different and if possible even more cheap than before also. Full Moon might not have had the greatest actors, scripts or special effects but they usually spent a sufficient amount of time, money and energy on making the dolls (the stars of their movies) look good.
There is another small glitch in this movie that will annoy the fans of the Puppet Master franchise. Somehow Toulon's blood is needed for the formula to keep the dolls alive. The formula is now injected into holes in the back of the puppet's necks. For casual fans this is not a big deal, for longtime fans they know Toulon's blood had nothing to do with the formula and in part Three Toulon clearly injects them in the front of the neck area in a way that made it clear that as long as they got an injection, the puppets were fine.
Vanessa Angel is not a bad actress and has a million dollar body but she's stuck in a role and a movie that screams "I just want to collect a paycheck".
The Puppet Master theme music is blatantly absent as is the entire feel of the Full Moon series. The actors are horrible and seem to have to pause through lines in order to spit out the script they were supposed to remember and although the Demonic Toys franchise is much smaller I'm sure their fans felt disrespected by how marginalized their toys were to Angel's character, Sharpe.
Full Moon had this project announced before they folded. If only they had completed this then and not let Sci Fi skimp and cheat their way into trashing two beloved cult franchises with one movie that is so blatantly bad that it even loses the appeal of goofy and cheesy that so many second and third rate horror films fall into.
Avoid at all costs if you like either series.

(More customer reviews)This final (?) installment to the Lexx saga is, (as all the previous ones), quirky, interesting, provacative, and good. I won't recap as others have probably done. Suffce to say, if you enjoy any of the Lexx stories you will enjoy these. If you have to own them, then you must have these also, (as I had to). The Lexx shows have been a constant enjoyment for me, as a science fiction fan, and a student of philosophy and religion. I love the diractions they have gone and where they might go next. Truly a series that went where nhas gone before.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch (New Line Platinum Series) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Written, directed and starring John Cameron Mitchell,this film categorizes itself as a "post-punk rock neo glam rock musical". I say it's in a category of it's own. And it completely blew me away.
Hedwig is the most outrageous transsexual character that has ever graced the stage or screen. The audience gets to know Hedwig as a REAL person and not a cartoon character. We see his childhood in East Germany, his romance with an army sergeant, the pressure he feels to have a gender change operation in order to marry his love and leave the oppression of the communist world. This story and the subsequent plot complications are told in flashback against a background of original rock music, whose lyrics throb with the meaning of love and the nature of gender. The sets are original and there's even a sequence where the audience is invited to sing along by following a bouncing ball. The story races along and there are animation sequences as Hedwig searches after lost love and a quest for gender identification. The costumes and wigs are magnificent and the camerawork makes the most of the space and balance of energy. It's an elaborate production. And it also has something important to say.
I loved the lights, the action, the camera, the costumes, the music, the story. But most of all I the loved the characters. Hedwig is simply wonderful! It's not for children though, or religious fundamentalists, or people easily disturbed by transsexualism. But for anyone who wants to see a fantastic rock musical that will make you think as well as entertain, don't miss it. Recommended for those hearty few.

Lexx Series 4 Volume 5 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)On this DVD volume there is a good episode, a great episode!, another "stupid teenagers" invade The Lexx story, and a head scratcher where the writers are seriously reaching for plot. Here are the episodes:
4.17 Dutch Treat--President Priest, First Lady Bunny, and Prince (caught inside a television set--this is completely unexplained, and seems to have no other purpose than to allow Prince some dialogue). This has some fun editing during on sequence where President Priest and Bunny have to kill a bunch of Moth Breeders in able to regain the key to the Lexx. Just call him "Cowboy Priest." But when they finally get the key, the Lexx is too ill to go anywhere without eating first. They let the Lexx eat Holland. Thus the title of this episode.
4.18 The Game--Chess enthusiasts will love this episode, as I did. Kai and Prince play a high stakes game of chess in the Other Zone where, if Prince wins, Stan and Xev will die. If Kai wins, he will be given life by Prince so that he may finally die. The character discrepancy that allows Kai any sort of motivation other than to kill is always questionable. But this is, and always will be, a classic Lexx episode.
4.19 Haley's Comet--This is where the Lexx is showing it's fatigue as a show. This is another re-do story from season 2 but with a minor plot change. Teenagers invade the Lexx, and instead of Kai going on a murderous rampage slaughtering them all, one of the teens does it with a little motivation from psycho-Robot Head 790. Oh, and there just happens to be a "black pack" on the bridge that nobody has noticed? A "black pack," for those unacquainted, is a very nasty disintegration weapon. This is a tired episode, and if not for a couple truly dazzling special effects near the end, would be a complete waste of time.
4.20 Apocalexx Now--Lyekka, or rather a reasonable facsimile, returns to the Lexx. Now the crew is in Vietnam, of all places, and this is another case of the makers of this show reaching for any sort of story. There are a lot of episodes in season 4 that just don't feel like science fiction, but more along the borders of bizarre fantasy. And just like the previous episode, the humor is either forced on the viewer or absent. This show used to have great satire, but all too often during season 4, like in this weird episode, the story fails to enthrall.
The first two episodes here are the DVD's only saving grace, while the last two are really unnecessary viewing. One more DVD to go...
