(More customer reviews)Many have accused John Waters of kissing up to the mainstream for the past decade or so, starting with "Cry Baby" and "Hairspray," with their less than shocking view of the world. Where, they cried, is the delightfully perverse brain that gave us "Pink Flamingos?"
Be careful what you wish for, because "A Dirty Shame" will bring it all back home. Perfectly cast, brilliantly acted and a total grossfest, this is the best and most outragous movie Waters has done since, well, "Female Trouble." Tracy Ullman and Chris Isaak play the Sticklers, a pair of "neuters" who are completely against all things sexual. A chance accident makes Ullman a sex-addict to the church of Johnny Knoxville (who finally proves himself a movie star here) and his merry band of perverts. If there's a fetish that can be exploited or made disgusting, you'll see it here.
There are so many laugh out loud sexploits here, that I can't even begin to describe them. You'll be wincing as you laugh, as the moments accelerate in the movie from funny -- to weirder and funny -- to beyond the bizarre. You'll hear Tracy Ullman describe oral behavior in so many ways that you'll lose track. You'll discover what a "bear" is. You'll see Chris Isaak leer so salaciously that you'll wonder what directions were being given behind the camera. And you'll hear so many hysterical 50's and 60's sexually oriented novelty songs that you'll be looking for the soundtrack by the end of the week.
A word of warning though. If you are in the least bit prudish, then "A Dirty Shame" will have you fleeing the movie in mortal terror. Now if THAT sounds like the kind of NC-17 rated 90 minutes of comedy that would delight you, then you need a little "Shame" in your life.

Lexx - Series 2, Volume 3 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)The long-awaited dvd releases of this season 2 series kicks into high gear with the release of #4, which includes one of my personal favorite episodes,"Wake the Dead" and a journey into some space-kink with "791" and "Nook", and wraps it up nicely with "Norb", which showcases the arch-enemy Mantrid's return to the series for a climactic finish to the series down the line. "Wake the Dead" allows Michael McManus to release all that pent-up aggression suppressed by being dead and gives one of the funniest serial killer/slasher movie parodies in recent memory, and serves as his all-time favorite episode as well. "791" lets 'Lyekka',(man-eating plant person) and 790 to realize some suppressed desires, but not necessarily with each other. Lyekka wants food,(people type food) and 790 wants Xev, and gets himself a body to prove it, with dire results. "Nook" serves as the episode where Xev finally gets what she wants, but the price may be too high. The subplot with Stanley and the monk hilariously delves into the realm of innuendo in the form of bisexuality, again a welcome sideview of desires left unrealized. "Norb" sees the return of Mantrid and the youngster from "White Trash", both of which turn in excellent performances. The tension during the chase scenes with the drone arms were especially spine-tingling and left me with a distinct sense of dread for the coming episodes, which is exactly what they were supposed to do. All in all, a great combo, and the picture quality was far superior to the first two dvds previously released, the interviews and extra goodies also were a delightful bonus..A must-have for the Lexx fan..

Lexx - Series 2, Vol. 1 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Well, if you're considering this DVD, hopefully, you've already seen the first four movies that comprise the first season of Lexx (this DVD is the first four episodes from the second season), otherwise you might not appreciate a program that takes some bearing-with to get into the swing of. All the humor of the first season carries over into the next 20 episodes of Lexx, and it just gets weirder. The second season does not quite have the satisfying depth of the first - while there is a story arc that carries across the season, it really is background except for the first episode, and the last few... there are a lot of one-shot stories that seem to focus more on the frightenly bizarre universe of the Dark Zone. The innuendo also gets cranked up a notch, with one episode taking place in a brothel satellite, another one seeing a character turning into a ...crazed cyborg, yet another having the Lexx crew switching genders and so on... this season is NOT for the kids! However, if one just sits back and enjoys each episode at face value, its still a mightily fine season. The camp factor during this season has been ramped up considerably, and while some of the episodes are outright silly, all in all its still a lot of fun.
Hardcore sci-fi fans may be put off by the camp humor, the patchy story, and the sexual content. However, if you're looking for a fun and silly ride, these are more or less exactly what makes this a worthwhile purchase. Fans of the Lexx universe might be caught off-guard by the second season, but I'd suggest bearing with it and enjoying it for what it is.

Lexx: Series 3 Vol 1 (2 Tape Set) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)I was one of the ones who frowned at the series when it first aired on the Sci-Fi channel, but for some reason I started picking up the DVD's with Season 2, and found it to be actually enjoyable and now I've just picked up S3-V1, and while it has a new spin on the series (season three has a continuing story format divided into 13 chapters) I found the unedited scenes to be quite a surprise.
Where Season two had a few almost passive nude or suggestive scenes, season three has a few scenes that are not recommended for younger viewers. While cut out or re-formatted for airing on the Sci-Fi channel, there are some scenes especially in "Gametown" & "Boomtown" which uses some rather extensive waist-up female nude scenes, and not just in passing either, some rather touch-feely type stuff. Don't get me wrong, I don't see anything wrong with it (I actually found myself pausing once or twice) it's just not recommended for the younger audiences is all.
As for the stories themselves, they are very well told, and the nude scenes that exist fit very well into the story. And what's great about season three, while it helps to have seen season two, you don't HAVE to have seen it (unlike where you had to follow the movies to catch onto the early season two episodes).
I believe (like with many cult series') that LEXX will have a greater following now that the series is ended.

Lexx Series One "1.0: I Worship His Shadow" (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)I am a huge fan of Lexx. I really think it is one of the best shows I've ever seen on TV. I got into it around the middle of the second season & became an addict after that. I have all of the DVD's & have seen every episode (even the movies) multiple times. I plan to review each DVD, each episode, one by one. So here's my review for Series 1, Volume 1

Episode 1.1: I Worship His Shadow -This is it, the beginning of the show Lexx. The first "season" consisted of 4 mini-movies & this is the first one in the series. A great first episode, where you learn about the history of the Kai, Stan & Xev. It's a long story but I'll try to summarize. Kai's people, the Brunnen-G, get destroyed by the Divine Shadow. Kai was killed and re-animated (with this stuff called Proto-Blood) & made into an assain for his shadow. Stan was a part of a group of heretics fighting against the Divine Shadow, but Stan got caught & lost some codes that ended up killing lots of his people, the Divine Order kept him around in case they ever needed more information & made him a lowly security guard on the cluster. Zev was deserted by her parents & put in a wife bank. She got sent to the cluster & was sentenced to become a love slave, but something went wrong & she became part Cluster Lizard. Basically this mini-movie shows all of this background, plus it shows how they 3 end up together & how they get the Lexx (The Lexx being the ship they fly in, it's a living Bug that need to eat & can blow up planets with ease. It was meant to be a weapon for his Divine Shadow). Of course stealing the Lexx makes The Divine Shadow mad & he chases after the crew. It's a great episode & really shows the history behind the show. It sets up the other min-movies & the series really well. It's a great story & I think the best of the 4 mini-movies of the first season. Check it out if you can, especially if you liked the series.
