I find it hard to believe that with today's technology, people find it difficult to watch a DVD in Zone 4. Refer to your DVD player's user manual to select the Zone or go online and see what information you can use.
Being married to a Colombian woman and to be from North America, Andres comedy transcends generations and cultures. His comedy covers all aspects of life, love, and family and it doesn't matter where you are from, what your nationality may be or which generation you are, Andres captures not only the Colombian people but the global population with perfection!
Colombians...you should be very proud of Andres, your country, and your people!!!

Brainy Baby - Spanish (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)When I saw one of the very negative reviews, I thought this person was exaggerating given that I had bought the Brainy Baby for French DVD and thought it was really good (quality and all), but I needed to buy an educational DVD for my 18 mo. old daughter in Spanish since is too my very first mother tongue. I decided to buy this DVD, specially because there are not many out there of this kind. When I saw it, I thought it wasn't that bad. It does have accents where there should be, and question marks (Did this person referred to an old version?) However, they did use a couple of words that I would not use in spanish so it's useless to teach a toddler words she would not use, like the word for ball (pelota), they used "bola". I think pelota is more widely used, not just in Mexico. That is my only criticism; they should have used a term that is common for many countries, so I think they should have done a little more research and the narrator would be fine. Her pronunciation is fenomenal (regardless whether or not she is a native speaker, it doesn't matter!). The content of the video is great, just what a toddler needs to learn a language in a fun way. My daughter enjoyed this DVD from beginning to end. It's just good enough to entertain my daughter without mindless TV cartoons.

(More customer reviews)I travelled from Massachusetts to Miami to see this show, along with a friend and my brother who lived in Florida at the time and I did not regret it. Roberto Carlos is still at the top of his game. Vocally, he is still in great form. There is really not much else I can say except that he has accomplished it all during his amazing career. What a singer! I have both the standard DVD and the Blue Ray format of this concert and while the Blue Ray has a better picture, the standard DVD has a better sound. I would encourage anyone to invest in this product as I believe you will not be disappointed. The show was spectacular.

Dora the Explorer - Rhymes and Riddles (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)My 2 year old daughter is a huge Dora fan, and she loves this DVD. The 4 episodes are very good, and include Dora had a little lamb, which is very entertaining, and deals with many of the nursery rhymes our kids see at preschool and look at in books.
The menu selection on the DVD is easy, though I wish there was a way to have the episodes repeat or go back to back with one another- when my Mom babysits, she has trouble turning the DVD on, so easier is always better.
The DVD also contains some interesting features, like games which I think will be good for my daughter when she gets a little older.

After each scene, the characters review what was taught and then follow up with a song or a DVD game. My kids enjoyed the games, the music and the kooky animated Chihuahua that jumps in with the human characters. In the past, I had a difficult time getting them to study Spanish with books and CDs but this DVD really had them interested in learning more.

Hay bastante suspenso y humor, y a la mitad de la serie, la novela toma un giro extraordinario que solo sigue demonstrando que buena fue esta novela. Maria Antonieta de las Nieves (actriz del famoso programa de Chespirito, "El Chavo del Ocho") y Mauricio Ochmann actuan en este obra de arte clásica. What made this particular soap opera so much more popular than the other millions of soaps out there (besides its totally cool, totally unexpected ending) was the imagination of the author. Dame Chocolate combines romance with mystery and suspense with fantasy. This is not your ordinary soap opera, as Mayan culture and magic make their own appearance in this popular show. There's a lot of suspense and humor in this series, and then plot takes an unexpected turning point with its own twist that only further proves how good this story is. Maria Antonieta de las Nieves (an actress from Chespirito's famous Spanish TV show, "El Chavo del Ocho") and Mauricio Ochmann participate in this classic. Dame Chocolate is very well written and deserves to be bought by those who watched it on TV, and for those who enjoy watching a good show - men, too! 5/5 stars!

Los Borgia (The Borgias) (2006) Review

Although the "Product Details" section says the film is 120 minutes in length and is presented in a "full screen" version, it actually runs over two hours and twenty minutes and is in a wide-screen format(it looks to be about 2.35:1 to me). Yellow, English subtitles are also available.
Now for the movie itself. I'm not an expert, but the film seems to be fairly accurate historically, especially for "movie history". This is most apparent in the depiction of Lucretia Borgia, played by Maria Valverde. She is not the murderous poisoner of legend, but a pawn of her father and brothers who is married off so the Borgias can create political alliances with other powerful families. There are some liberties taken with historical facts in order to tighten the narrative and make events less confusing. For example, in reality, Lucretia was only thirteen years old at the time of her first marriage. However, there's plenty of corruption, intrigue and assassination to keep the film interesting. Late in the film, when it looks like it might be slowing down a bit, Paz Vega shows up as sword-wielding Borgia opponent Caterina Sforza and gives the film a shot of adrenalin.
The movie is beautiful looking with lucious sets, costumes, and photography. It's fortunate that the film is presented in widescreen so this can be fully appreciated. The acting is also fine. The film has many virtues, but for me, comes up just short of those other Renaissance films QUEEN MARGOT and the first ELIZABETH with Cate Blanchett. That said, it's still a fine, entertaining film and well worth watching.

Dora the Explorer: The Egg Hunt (2004) Review

As you can guess from the title, Egg Hunt, the first episode in this collection is all about gathering Easter eggs. Boots the Monkey and Dora search for eggs that are both extravagantly decorated and filled with fun prizes. But these beautiful egg treasures are only tiny teasers compared to the grand prize: the Big Yellow Egg at Grandma's house!
In the second episode, Dora celebrates Mother's Day (El Dia de Las Madres) by helping her papa bake a cake for mama. Dad didn't do his grocery shopping very well, and Dora goes on an adventure through various forests to gather the bananas, nuts and chocolate that he forgot. She uses her counting skills to complete Padre's recipe, and helps throw a terrific party for her mother.
Two other musical cartoons are on the disk, one about a music parade and one about a magic flute belonging to a boy named Pablo. The first two holiday cartoons have a wonderful emphasis on family, plus the usual Dora skills like counting, Spanish language, and computer literacy. The last two episodes follow the Dora formula of using the map and backpack to find items, but they also have a couple of fun little songs interjected, not to mention the adorable story of Pablo and his grandfather.
By their nature, the Dora cartoons are immensely repetitive. Your child learns exactly how to respond to each scenario, cheered on by Dora, Boots and all the other cute critters of Dora's tropical homeland. Repetition is how children learn, so Dora is a great character for pre-schoolers. However, beware the savvy marketing of the Dora Empire. Each episode is stuffed full of glittery items that your kid will insist that she needs, from Dora's pretty bracelet to her backpack to her shoes, etc., etc. A trip to your local Wal-Mart will show you that absolutely EVERYthing in Dora's universe is for sale, plus some additional items you never would have dreamed necessary for survival as a child. Be ready for your little girl to beg, plead and mutter curse words in Spanish if you don't acquiesce.

My 3YO daughter could remember the number of toes a jaguar have, the types of animals who sleep in the day and the features of a macaw, by just after watching the DVD once!
This show is a good extension to Dora. Now i'm convinced that i should get the whole series of Go Diego Go!

Pasion de Gavilanes (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Having viewed Pasion de Gavilanes in real time, I found the DVD to be a wonderful recap of the story. Naturally, in the allowed time it would be impossible to see all of my favorite scenes, but in a "cliff note" fashion I was able to see the couples coming together and to follow the storyline. As a non-hispanic, the fact that the caps were available in English only made the experience more enjoyable. Given the number of times I have rewatched PDG, and translating from the caps, I should know the dialog by heart. The behind the scenes clips and interviews were a treat and I was very pleased with that. Finally, the quality of the DVD picture was superb. I found myself wishing Telemundo would release the novela to the public in its "total" package (30+ DVDs) and let us worry about how to pay for it. LOL

Violentos Recuerdos / Violent Memories (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie, which I saw on cable Video-on-Demand, was much better than what I expected it to be=- although I'm not sure what it was about.
It appears, on the surface, to be about a lady who was in an accident, has amnesia and can't remember any of the accident details-- nor anything else in her life-- and now is being held captive sort of (she doesn't try to escape and really has not reason to) in a psychiatric hospital. No one is mistreating her, but there seems to be some sort of foul-play going on behind the scenes. But what? As the story unfolds, it appears that something else altogether is going on. But what? For me, this saved this from being a dull south-of-the-border gore-fest. It was fun to look at, although the somber tones are clichéd. So, I won't mind having another go at seeing what on earth this movie about. Whatever it's about it's kind of fun to look at.
The movie's sinister air of ambiguity is reminiscent of David Lynch's "Mulholland Dr." (a movie that I would never have understood had I not read through all the Amazon reviews of the movie until I found an interpretation that explains the storyline. For fans of Spanish cinema, there are plot echoes of "La Ardilla Roja," although, as a whole, this movie hasn't a trace of "Ardilla"'s humor and beauty.

El Privilegio de Amar (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)One more double-sided disk would make this a 5-star release, especially since, as with ABRAZAME MUY FUERTE, some of the missing elements are explained later. Anyone who didn't see the TV series (155 episodes) will probably not get some of what is going on in this story. Also, certain character subtleties are lost, especially with regard to the story's archvillain, Ana Joaquina, and its male villain, Nicolas Obregon.
For those who did see the series, there are several great confrontations missing including the first one between Ana Joaquina and Luciana in the latter's office and a later one between Ana Joaquina and Andres. We also miss some scenes that emphasize the tremendous stress put on Padre Juan over a year and a half of the characters' lives after his mother commits one of her abuses of the confessional. In spite of that, the great Cesar Evora's performance doesn't suffer that much. Nor do those of Helena Rojo, Adele Noriega, or Rene Strickler.
Better abridgement than others, but I hope Televisa starts making these longer.

(More customer reviews)Televisa makes it very difficult for me to take them seriously when they release chopped up versions of their best telenovelas in one disappointing DVD box set. I'm not a big fan of most of their contemporary telenovelas (especially their recent ones), but I love their period pieces and costume dramas and La Artorcha Encendida (The Lit Torch -- it has a better ring to it in Spanish) is right up there in quality and romance as Amor Real (Real Love), Corazon Salvaje (Savage Heart), Ramona, Yo Compro Esa Mujer (I Shall Buy that Woman) and Alborada (Break of Dawn) -- the latter of which is currently on the air here in the US. I loved watching this intense love story set against the backdrop of the Mexican war for independence in early nineteenth century starring a younger Leticia Calderon, Ernesto Laguardia and Humberto Zurita (who was brilliant as a villain in his most recent period piece called Los Plateados). I also got to see other heavyweights like Enrique Rocha, Carmen Salinas and Juan Ferrara. The brilliant Christian Bach is also featured in this telenovela, but most of her scenes must have been cut off or something because she scarcely appears in this DVD. The scenes are choppy and uneven, the music score is different from the one I remember when it aired on Univision and, if you can believe it, the ending is cut off. We are left high and dry when it comes to knowing what happens to the villains. All in all, this has got to be the worst DVD box set Televisa has ever released. I give five stars to the actual serialized novel because it is one of the best stories I have seen, but I give one star to the actual DVD. I'll be very wary of picking up DVD sets from the popular Mexican production company next time. I hope they will release unabridged or better edited box sets in the future because I like the idea of owning my favorite telenovelas.

This great telenovela was writen by Colombia's "master of mystery" writer Julio Jimenez, same one who wrote hits like Pasion de gavilanes, La viuda de blanco and Yo amo a Paquita Callego and it's the story of a man who comes back from the dead in a new body for the woman he loves only to find that she is with another(and always has been!). A love-hate relashionship with drive them to a passionate afair and the revalation of secrets that will leave you with an I-did-not-see-this-one-coming look!
Lorena Rojas is simply enchanting as the obscure Isabel, she provokes, intrigues and leaves you breathless with her brilliant acting! From the other hand the villano of the telenovela Martin karpan with his strong, passionate acting is sure to shake the viewer up!
Many other big telenovela and Latin cinema stars take part in the telenovela with Roberto Moll, Pablo Azar, Diana Osorio and Jeannette Lehr standing out!

Jennifer Lopez Presents: Como Ama Una Mujer (2007) Review

First, the song is amazing; the acting is pretty good but, the story is not very original. Of course, there are no similarities whatsoever between Jennifer Lopez' life and this mini-series (insert cynical eye-roll here). Joking aside, the series is very (extremely) reminiscent of Jennifer López' life plus a little bit of "The Bodyguard (Special Edition)" thrown in the mix (namely the stalker and the bitter assistant).
I was quickly drawn into the story and was happily surprised by Leonor Varela's performance. You may remember Leonor Varela from her performance in the "Cleopatra" miniseries. Rebecca Jones and Rocío Verdejo also did a good job.
The series plainly showcases Jennifer López and there is a lot of product placement (way too obvious) but, it is good, entertaining.
The novela tells the story of a famous singer and actress who is trying to find true love; in this case is trying to decide between two men-child. Both Diego (Raúl Méndez) and Andrés (Christián de la Fuente) play the most self-absorbed, egocentric and selfish men ever. By the third episode I was wishing she would just stay alone and move on without them.
Although the mini-series lasts four hours, I found that the story was hurried and not well-developed. It shows a immature work that hurries to tell a story without really digging in. The characters actions did not seem to go with the story. Everyone tells Sofía that she is the most selfish person ever (and at one point she thinks so herself) and yet, we see her as the only one really giving herself to the one she loves. Diego is constantly questioning her love for him and can't seem to outgrow his childish jealousy outbursts. And Andrés is in self-wallowing misery, blaming everyone but himself.
This DVD has no Special Features whatsover and yes, no subtitles.
