Bangkok Girl : A Documentary about Thailand's Night Life (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This short documentary tries to be a grand expose of the Bangkok Sex Trade, but the filmmaker doesn't have nearly the expertise or gravitas to pull this off. Where the movie really succeeds is in the personal charisma of its 'leading lady' Pla. She exudes real charisma and absolutely lights up the screen. She deserves a much better movie.
However, if you understand what this is, "An Ultra-Low Budget Indie Documentary" you'll enjoy it. Worth trying out.

(More customer reviews)Disappointed by family life, particularly her relationship with her mother, Mini rebels and becomes a person without remorse. She becomes a prostitute, in fact her stepfather is her second client. They start an affair and eventually team up to drive her mother insane, it works too well, and soon are investigated by a detective. Mini's First Time has no moral conscience so its definitely not for everyone, but for those who love imperfect characters and like femme fatales then this movie might be for you.

Alec Baldwin is Martin, the wealthy, clueless stepfather of Mini (played by Nikki Reed). She's clever and has a healthy libido. And she's on a mission to stir up as much trouble as she can before her high school graduation. It's pretty clear where Mini got her conniving streak from-her mom (Carrie-Anne Moss) who spends more time partying than with her husband. Diana quickly becomes the third wheel when Martin and Mini's relationship escalates. A series of disturbing events at their posh modern house finally prompts the arrival of John (Luke Wilson) as a nosey detective on the case. Jeff Goldblum delivers another shot of star quality playing the cheesy TV show host who lives next door. Part Heather and part Lolita, Mini's a girl to watch out for in this delightfully warped comedy.

Flavor Of Love - The Complete Second Season (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Our favorite clock-wearing bachelor, Flavor Flav, is back with 20 more girls vying for his love. Of course there's more lying, back-stabbing & cat-fighting but there's also a porn scandal, the "defacation" incident, more celebrity guests, and the return of New York (and her mother). Flav certainly had his hands full of drama (and booty) this time.
Some of the more interesting girls were:
SUMTHIN - The girl who lost control of her "bodily functions" during the champagne toast after the first elimination. Boy, did Flav give her the perfect name.
NIBBLZ - The "happy, well-adjusted girl who really enjoys sex". For some of the challenges, she used her booty to her advantage (and to Flav's pleasure) but her sexual tactics ultimately killed her chance to win as Flav decided that she wouldn't be a good role model for his kids.
TOASTEE - She earned her nickname as she got "toasted" her first night in the mansion. Her attempt to trash Nibblz backfired horribly when Nibblz went to Flav and told him that Toastee did internet porn. Toastee denied it, of course, so Flav did some "research" to find out the truth, which he revealed during an elimination ceremony to the shock of everyone.
But here's where the drama gets MUCH deeper.
At the end of the 5th elimination, Flav lines up the remaining girls single file and announces a special guest who will help with the next elimination. Through the door walks New York, who is greeted by shocked expressions and declarations of "Oh, Hell No!!!" New York is back in the house (and the competition) and she's brought the drama - cat fights, near fist fights, mind games & tears - to win the love of "her man".
Not to mention that New York's mother is back in the mansion and her discontent for Flav is stronger than ever. Altercations between her & Flav start the moment she sets foot in the mansion and carry on to the explosive final episode.
The word on the web is that this will be the final season of Flavor Of Love but there may possibly be a sequel called "I Love New York", with you-know-who searching for her one true love out of 20 men.

Call Me: The Rise and Fall of Heidi Fleiss (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I did not know too much about Heidi Fleiss before seeing this DVD. I only vaguely recall a mini-interview she did for PLAYBOY before heading off to prison. Although I've never given her much thought, I basically thought of her as a sort of entrepreneur in an albeit illegal business. In any case, I figured that she never hurt anyone and that her lifestyle was basically innocuous.
I was wrong. If this docu-drama is close to being accurate (and I doubt if they sensationalized the story TOO much) then Heidi Fleiss is a very nasty, arrogant, deceitful, shallow, stoned-out spoiled brat of a person. After seeing this film I found myself with zero sympathy for her. In fact, the biggest "tragedy" of her life is that she served only 20 months of her 7 year prison sentence.
Portraying the vindictive Fleiss is Jamie-Lynn DiScala, and she does a very credible job. Sometimes it's difficult for actors to take on un-likeable characters without over-acting. DiScala has a natural screen-presence and is a perfect fit.
The movie itself is decent. There are some steamy scenes here & there, although I thought there could have been more (and longer lasting!).There is something about seeing topless women walking around a pool (seemingly 50 yards from the camera) that makes me think "Gosh, what a waste!" Ditto for seeing DiScala's breasts for all of 5 seconds.
If you're interested in Fleiss this movie might be worth a look. If you're looking for a steamy flick there are better ones out there. All in all, if you are looking for movie biographies there are much more interesting and worthwhile PEOPLE out there who have had docu-dramas done on their lives as well. That's my take on things.

Human Trafficking (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)Human Trafficking is a bold and ambitious project; Lifetime is to be congratulated for exposing a part of society most people would prefer to ignore, and doing so in a mature, serious fashion. Originally designed as a mini-series, it is presented here in its entirety, with convenient breaks. This is helpful, at three hours it may be too much for the average viewer to assimilate all at once. Even the jaded appetite will find Human Trafficking upsetting.
One must wonder about those who claim ignorance of sexual slavery as it is practiced around the world. This appalling behavior is more than merely time-honored; it is codified and woven into the fabric of society itself. What is surprising, and what Human Trafficking gets right, is that sexual slavery is alive, well, and lucrative. Like drugs and weapons, a filthy business like this can only exist where there is powerful market demand, and that demand is chillingly close to home.
Human Trafficking benefits from good directing, (Christian Duguay), and some splendid performances. Leading the way is the lovable Scot from The Full Monty, (Robert Carlyle), who plays the Eastern block criminal mastermind behind the sophisticated sexual gulag. His accent is impeccable, and his character well realized. Sergei Karpovich is no Cold War ham-fisted brute. He is smart, computer-savvy, and thoroughly ruthless. (Like so many inner-city drug dealers, under different circumstances he probably would have been a captain of legitimate industry.)
After Carlyle, the showcase performance here belongs to Isabella Blais, (Helena), one of the women whose decent into sexual slavery is tracked. Helena is certainly not stupid, but she is vulnerable, and we watch in horror as one bad decision lures her into an unimaginable nightmare. We also see some of the ingenious techniques used to ensure cooperation. This is where Human Trafficking really shines. It's never sensational, licentious, or titillating. On the contrary, it exposes the complete banality of evil, the disturbing ordinariness of it in flat details that do not manipulate emotions.
There are two problems with Human Trafficking. At times it gets preachy, explaining the story rather than telling it. (With subject matter this explosive, that is completely unnecessary.) The other is the casting of Mira Sorvino. Sorvino is a fine actress, (her performance here is fine), but she is simply too pretty and adorable for the part. One scene attempts to show why she would take on the hideous assignment of catching these vermin, but it's not enough. Making her character female was an interesting decision, but to work, it should have been someone with more edge and less curve. Donald Sutherland, as her boss, excels.
We imagine our society to be advanced, sophisticated, refined. Thanks to the folks at Lifetime for shedding some light on the difficult truth.
