(More customer reviews)This short documentary tries to be a grand expose of the Bangkok Sex Trade, but the filmmaker doesn't have nearly the expertise or gravitas to pull this off. Where the movie really succeeds is in the personal charisma of its 'leading lady' Pla. She exudes real charisma and absolutely lights up the screen. She deserves a much better movie.
However, if you understand what this is, "An Ultra-Low Budget Indie Documentary" you'll enjoy it. Worth trying out.

Absolute Zero (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)This movie reminds me of the first science fiction movies produced in the 50's when cardboard props swung from visible strings. It is, by far, my favorite film. From phony looking props, backgrounds, and atmospheric phenomena, to award-removing scripts, soundtracks, acting, and production, this film is, by far, the best warm pile I have ever stepped in. My favorite scene is when the older scientist falls on the soft snow in a cave during a tremor. The ground shifts just enough to make him lose his balance, he gently falls to the floor, and he is left sitting upright with a small scratch on his forehead that suprisingly enough, kills him a moment later. Then, the main character, in a feable attempt to express his utter devastation over the loss of his best friend, an otherwise undeveloped friendship until this moment, puts on his most insincere facial expression as he says, "Awe cheezed" or was it, "Awe geeze", or maybe "I cheezed", all of which seemed as inappropriate as the massive head injuries sustained by his beloved friend, and mentor. I would like to thank the producer for missing this flurb, for it has given my girlfriend and I a stress relieving catch phrase we use in response to life's many aggrevations. So America, when life throws it's worst at you, curl your nose and form the most unattractive facial expression you can muster up, and say, "Awe cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezed" hahahaha.....

Ghouls (2008) Review

Oh, William Atherton. Long ago was the time when your name on a production meant quality. Nowadays, it seems to do exactly the opposite. (Hmm, maybe The Last Samurai WASN'T Tom Cruise's fault?
...naah.) So when your name popped up in the opening credits of Ghouls, I pretty much knew what I was in for. I just didn't expect it to be this awful.
In any case, the painfully thin synopsis is that Atherton plays Stefan. Stefan's mom dies in the old country, and he rounds up his college-aged daughter Jen (the eye-popping Kristen Renton) and girlfriend Liz (Erin Gray-- yes, that Erin Gray) and they all head for some small, nameless country in Eastern Europe where the entire country shuns the village, and the entire village shuns them. Except, of course, for the family members-- and they're none too friendly, either. Things get a bit less dull when Jen runs into Thomas (James DeBello), a druid who's fighting the ghouls that haunt the town. (No, this isn't a spoiler, we find this out in the film's opening minutes, long before Jen does-- which was probably a bad idea on the part of the scriptwriter.)
Let me start by saying that the only possible reasons to watch this are to stare at Kristen Renton and if you're using it as the basis for a drinking game. Otherwise, give it the widest berth possible. Painful plot holes, inconsistent (and incompetent) characters, truly awful dialogue, the works. And, if I may be allowed a moment of sheer geekery, one should not call one's wraiths "ghouls", though these particular CGI monstrosities seem to be able to take either form at will. DeBello, who I thoroughly enjoyed in Cabin Fever, comes off here as a sort of low-rent Ray Liotta or Liev Schreiber (both of whom, I'm sure, turned this down and ran screaming, if it was offered to them), while Renton seesaws between disbelief and amusement (not at the events onscreen, at the script and the direction).
While in the annals of Sci-Fi Channel Original Films, this will not go down in history as the worst movie they've ever bankrolled (you'd have to sink a lot lower than this to get to the level of The Bone Eater), but it's in the bottom ten somewhere. Entirely awful. (half)

Woke Up Dead (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Woke Up Dead has an excellent cast of actors, so I was surprised at how much of a let-down the DVD was. Woke Up Dead isn't really a traditional movie. It's a string of 22 episodes of a show that was streamed on the internet in 2009.
The webisode series followed Drex Greene (Napoleon Dynamite), a zombie who tries to discover the secret behind a mysterious pill that made him "wake up dead." He's aided by his camera-toting buddy Matt, and Cassie, an especially hot medical student.
The good news: the casting is great. Jon Heder of Napoleon Dynamite stars as Drex, Josh Gad from "21" plays his roommate, and friend, and the beautiful Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) is Drex's med student love interest. Add to the mix Wayne Knight (Newman from Seinfeld), Meital Dohan (Weeds), and Ellia English (Curb Your Enthusiasm), and it looks like you'd have a hit DVD.
The problem? The writing is downright boring. It's not a legit "zombie" flick, and it's just not funny. The editing gives it the feel of a Nickelodeon program, but with adult themes. The product placement for Kodak throughout the program also starts to get a little annoying after a while.
What's worse is that the "movie" ends on a cliffhanger, since it's a compilation of the first season of the webisodes. You don't get to find out what happens to Drex (in the middle of an explanation), nor how he became a zombie. Since a second season hasn't even been announced, we're at least a year away from even finding out how the story ends.
The bottom line: This was a great collection of actors, all underused because of weak writing and a low budget. A film about a guy trying to make a discovery ends mid-story with no explanations and no closure. Why this was released on DVD before a second season was even filmed is a complete mystery to me, I wouldn't even suggesting renting it.
