Stranded (2008) Review

Stranded (2008)

The story of the 1972 plane crash in the Andes and the struggles of the men aboard to survive seems to pop into the public awareness periodically over the three decades since it happened. "Stranded" is the latest documentary on the subject, and it's the best I've seen. All 16 survivors participated. Director Gonzalo Arijon incorporates grainy, impressionistic, silent reenactments of the scenes the men describe. This enhances the audience's picture of the events without usurping the gripping commentary of the survivors. The combination of interviews, some archival footage, and the dreamlike reenactments, which seem like memories, make this retelling of the story more engrossing than any narrative adaptation.
On Friday, October 13, 1972, a college rugby team from Montevideo, Uruguay set out on Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 to Santiago, Chile, where they were to compete in a match. Having changed its route to avoid inclement weather, the plane descended too early over the mountains, severed both wings, and crash-landed high in the snow-covered Andes. Of the 45 people aboard, 29 survived the crash, 23 uninjured. They didn't have adequate clothing for the freezing conditions. Many had never seen snow before. And, even strictly rationed, food would only last a few days. They hoped to be rescued but could hear on the radio that the aerial search was called off due to heavy snow. And yet 16 of the young men spent 72 days on the mountain and lived to talk about it.
All survivors participated, but some say more than others. Fernando "Nando" Parrado, who wrote a book about his experiences, seems to have been a leader after the group lost its team captain. Roberto Canessa, who, with Nando, was responsible for the rescue, is the most pensive and analytical of the experience. Gustavo Zerbina is vibrant and opinionated. Those who had the strongest voices on the mountain have the most to say today. The film places no more emphasis on the men's cannibalism than on any other element of their story, for which I am grateful. I've never understood the fascination with the cannibalism. It's the least interesting aspect of the ordeal. This is an incredible story of survival and escape against all odds and against the indifference and supremacy of Nature. In Spanish with optional English subtitles.
The DVD (Zeitgeist 2009): Bonus features are a US trailer (2 min) and a featurette, "The Making of Stranded" (52 min). This is a loosely organized mix of interviews with survivors that were cut from the final edit of the film, some brief interviews with the director on location, in which he emphasizes that this film is about the experiences of the men, not about action, and we spend time with some of the survivors as they relate more details of their experiences to the young actors who will portray them. Both the film and featurette are in Spanish with optional English subtitles.

On October 13, 1972, a young rugby team called "The Old Christians" from Montevideo, Uruguay, boarded a plane for a match in Chile--and then vanished into thin air. Two days before Christmas, 16 of the 45 passengers miraculously resurfaced. They had managed to survive for 72 days after their plane crashed on a remote Andean glacier. Thirty-five years later, the survivors returned to the crash site--known as the Valley of Tears--to recount in their own words their harrowing story of defiant endurance, intense spirituality, and indestructible friendship. Previously documented in the worldwide bestseller Alive (and the film adaptation starring Ethan Hawke), this shocking true story finally gets the cinematic treatment it deserves. Visually breathtaking and crafted with riveting detail by documentary filmmaker (and childhood friend of the survivors) Gonzalo Arijon with a masterful combination of on-location interviews, archival footage and reenactments, Stranded is a hauntingly powerful and spiritually moving celebration of humanity.SPECIAL FEATURES- 16:9 anamorphic transfer, formatted for widescreen televisions- "The Making of Stranded": A 52-minute featurette with behind-the-scenes footage of the cast and crew, and additional interviews with the crash survivors- U.S. theatrical trailer- Optional English subtitles- Director's statement

I purchased this because I have always been a weather junkie and wanted to learn more; the chase episodes were very disappointing. If I were forced to ride in the vehicle for a day with the overwhelmingly negative photographer, I would find another chase vehicle to occupy! The second dvd is much more interesting, with various types of weather related disasters, what causes them, how they will affect us worst case scenario, etc. I also bought this for my sister, and she raved about the second dvd. Unless they find a new photographer, I won't be buying any additional seasons of the show. The woe-is-me doom and gloom attitude of the photographer guarantees that this won't make many repeat performances in my disc changer.

Firestorm: Last Stand at Yellowstone (2006) Review

Firestorm: Last Stand at Yellowstone (2006)
Average Reviews:

Almost very educational - Yellowstone - Firefighters, their lives and dangers.
I must admit that I bought it because of Scott Foley from [The Unit] but the movie was well worth it.
The dangers are always real just never brought to our attention of all the dangers and risks that these men and women face when the blaze starts to take out millions of acre's of trees and park-lands.
I sure hope that the far shots of the blazes were not real - the up-close shots were too real. It reminds me that we must remember these people in our prayers. And hope that the government agencies are not as stupid and money-grubbing as they sound. [Probably a forlorn hope.]
This movie is Definitely recommended for the more mature audience - and not for some twitchy kid that thinks starting a fire is a lark.

Absolute Zero (2006) Review

Absolute Zero (2006)

This movie reminds me of the first science fiction movies produced in the 50's when cardboard props swung from visible strings. It is, by far, my favorite film. From phony looking props, backgrounds, and atmospheric phenomena, to award-removing scripts, soundtracks, acting, and production, this film is, by far, the best warm pile I have ever stepped in. My favorite scene is when the older scientist falls on the soft snow in a cave during a tremor. The ground shifts just enough to make him lose his balance, he gently falls to the floor, and he is left sitting upright with a small scratch on his forehead that suprisingly enough, kills him a moment later. Then, the main character, in a feable attempt to express his utter devastation over the loss of his best friend, an otherwise undeveloped friendship until this moment, puts on his most insincere facial expression as he says, "Awe cheezed" or was it, "Awe geeze", or maybe "I cheezed", all of which seemed as inappropriate as the massive head injuries sustained by his beloved friend, and mentor. I would like to thank the producer for missing this flurb, for it has given my girlfriend and I a stress relieving catch phrase we use in response to life's many aggrevations. So America, when life throws it's worst at you, curl your nose and form the most unattractive facial expression you can muster up, and say, "Awe cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeezed" hahahaha.....

Category 7: The End of the World (2005) Review

Category 7: The End of the World (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've always been open to watching these disaster movies. Volcano, Twister, Day of Tomorrow ... all good films in their own right, despite what the movie critics say about them.
Category 7: End of the World was a very entertaining movie. I think too many entertainment fans spend too much time over-analyzing movies that are made by the entertainment industry instead of enjoying it for what it is, quality entertainment. While I haven't seen the previous film, Category 6, I plan on purchasing the movie to see how this series started.
While it's not too impossible to believe, such events as what is seen in this film could very well become true. With the rising cost of oil and the fact that the greenhouse effect and global warming are impacting our enviropnment, this movie does have a very moral lesson to show anyone who watches this movie. We must protect our environment before it starts to react to our presence on this world.
It was refreshing to see Shannon Doherty and her authentic talent coming to the surface. She had been released from Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed because of her attitude with producers and directors but it was refreshing to see her performing true to her nature and having a role that was written just for her. She is a wonderful actress and it's time more and more roles were written specifically for her. Randy Quaid is also the consummate actor who always seems to manage to steal every scene he's in.
But, I was disapponted that the US Government and the politicians that are portrayed in this movie seem content in facing the ultimate destruction of Mother Nature and protecting the interests of the large corporations, oil cartels and special interests instead of safeguarding the lives of the people. It shows a lack of original thinking on the part of the writers, who should have gone to a few more creative writing courses before sitting down to write this movie. In addition, I felt that this movie was a little longer than it should have been. Hopefully, there'll be a little more of a waiting period before we see Category 8, which will be coming our way faster than we can turn off the power.

10.5: Apocalypse (2006)

This sequel to 10.5 is a disaster freak's dream come true. We get destruction of Hoover Dam; Las Vegas sinks into the sand; Mount Rushmore crumbles, and Houston is dessimated.
While probably not geologically accurate, I found the movie pretty much enjoyable except for the too lengthy rescue sequence in Las Vegas, but the first half and the final third are pretty involving. There are no super star performances, but you get adequate ones from Kim Delaney, Frank Langella, Dean Cain, Oliver Hudson, Beau Bridges and Carlos Bernard. The CGI effects are pretty decent and although some of it is reminiscent of THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE, there have been a lot more disastrous disaster films, so if you're a genre fan, you shouldn't be too disappointed.

Meteor (2009) Review

Meteor (2009)
Average Reviews:

It's unfortunate that Amazon doesn't allow for negative ratings, as this made-for-TV miniseries doesn't even deserve one star.
It's hard to know where to start with this one. First of all, the writing for this movie is atrocious. There are factual errors, logical errors and plot holes so bad that you'd swear they had to have been put there on purpose, because no one would mistakenly write something so wrong.
Then there's the direction. There are some very talented actors in this movie, and yet they act as if they're making a silent movie-era melodrama -- overacting to the extreme, making bizarre facial expressions, etc. Without revealing any spoilers, let's just say that one of the characters dies in the second half of the miniseries, and as he dies his body is wracked with convulsions that look like a stagehand is poking him with an electric cattle prod. It's actually funny. And what's with those unlabeled maps that seem to show the location of one of the scenarios? It's like the CGI department ran out of money and they left in half-finished interstitials.
I guess the most egregious fault with this miniseries, though, is the fact that it is completely BORING. So much of the narrative has nothing to do with anything else that occurs that it feels as if they took a two-hour TV movie and tried to stretch it to four hours by padding it with random unrelated storylines.
Oh, yeah, and the basic premise of this, a giant piece of space rock hurtling toward the Earth, has been done to death already.
So PLEASE don't waste your money on this piece of garbage. Buy DVDs of quality television. Heck, buy DVDs of mediocre television. Just don't reward the producers of this movie by giving them your money.

Descent (2005) Review

Descent (2005)

Luke Perry as doctor of natural science saves the day in `Descent,' low-budget rip-off of `The Core.' Maybe `The Core' was not the greatest sci-fi action adventure film in the world, but compared with this amazingly boring and confusing clone, it starts to look like a Robert Wise classic.
After the terrible introductory chapter, in which a poor guy experiences something very nasty because of a well - yes, a well that looks exactly like the one in `The Ring' - we are told that because of the stupid government experience, a tectonic plate shift occurs (whatever they are), resulting in earthquake and eruption of dormant volcano. To stop inevitable global catastrophic disaster, scientists in a huge machine with a big drill are sent deep into the Earth.
The only thing I liked about `Descent' is that they don't have to go to the inner core of the Earth as in the Hilary Swank film. In order to `fix' the big tear made in the surface of the Earth, the crew has only to reach as deep as 25 miles below.
It is shocking and even astonishing to see `Descent' steals everything from `The Core' and other sci-fi films concerning natural disaster like meteorite falling. Rivalry between the scientist team; untrustworthy military; and ex-lovers meeting each other again, etc. The special effects of the film are at best several huge cracks painted on the buildings and some blocks falling from there. Most of the disasters like destruction of city are not shown visually, but told by one TV reporters reading unexciting news. But when a dark-lit warehouse and poorly-designed set are substituted for the computer room of the US military, nothing is surprising.
The main cast including Luke Perry and Rick Roberts are not particularly bad, but there is nothing recommendable about the acting either. Michael Dorn plays the general, who represents the arrogance of the military, but his role (and acting) is just unmemorable.
`Decent' literally keeps going down from the beginning to the end with no saving grace. Even by the standard of made-for-TV B-films, the script and effects are not acceptable.

Mayday: Air Disasters (2003) Review

Mayday: Air Disasters (2003)

Hurray! I've been a huge fan of this series for a number of years (it also airs under alternate names like Air Crash Investigations in various countries). This is the first "season" of the series, which currently has 6 seasons of episodes, with something like 60 or so episodes. This is one of my all-time favorite documentary series featuring nice analytical and engaging storytelling and excellent production quality (typically far better than the average documentary). While later episodes would feature somewhat more advanced production quality, this first batch is still excellently produced.
Later episodes of the series aired in HD, but I don't ever recall seeing these earlier episodes in HD. An extra bonus for this set is that it's in anamorphic widescreen. Having only seen these early ones in their 4x3 aspect ratio, it was nice to see them in their full 16x9 aspect ration.
To the folks at Koch and National Geographic, PLEASE continue releasing this series. I'll absolutely purchase them all. And heck, it'd be extra cool to get the ones produced for it released in high def.
UPDATE: These episodes on the DVD's are definitely extended from the aired versions I've got previous recordings of. The couple episodes I compared had some 6+ more minutes on this DVD version (interview clips with family & survivors less important to the narrative seem to be a favorite for cuts). Each episode clocks in at 52 minutes, give or take a few seconds.
