This is a great family movie with excellent actors and a good, clean storyline. Breath taking scenery as well - I recommend it highly for both children and adults.

Danger Beneath Sea (2000)

Pretty well everything about this movie is standard fare but it is done well enough to make watching it a pleasurable enough experience .All the ingredients you would expect in a submarine movie all are present and correct here. There is the new skipper ,still finding his feet in an operational situation (Casper Van diem);there is the first officer who feels he should have got the job ,a mutinous or potentially mutinous crew and an outside enemy -this time North Korea. The direction by Jon Cassar is tense and tight and the cast do fine in their relatively undemanding roles
This is a good way of spending 90 or so testosterone fuelled minutes and confirms my view that Van Diem is worthy of more prestigious projects and bigger budgets

Ice Twisters (2009) Review

Ice Twisters (2009)
Average Reviews:

This SyFy Channel original film is neither outstanding nor awful; it's about what you'd expect for a movie made for television.
Since Amazon doesn't offer a synopsis, here's the rundown: The Federal Science Foundation has developed a means for creating storms, only their first major experiment goes wrong; the result are tornados that freeze everything in their path. Enter Charlie Price (played by Mark Moses of Mad Men and Desperate Housewives), a former scientist turned fiction writer, whose novels generally involve weather disasters. Price finds himself pitting his scientific and writing knowledge against an impending weather nightmare that threatens nearby cities.
The good news is that the majority of the cast are heavily experienced in television, so the acting is decent compared to most straight to video movies. Charlie Price's dry humor keeps the dialogue moving, though not especially interesting. The movie also deals with a competitive dynamic between Price and a younger scientist, though a subplot introduced between them is never returned to by the film's end.
While the movie's concept is somewhat original, the film overall is average in every respect. If you're a fan of science fiction movies, this would make for an adequate rental on a slow afternoon. I can't see anyone actually buying the DVD, though, unless they're a big fan of Mark Moses.

Sinking of the Lusitania (2007) Review

Sinking of the Lusitania (2007)

This Discovery Channel special 90-minute feature is the closets thing to a movie that has been released on the world's second most famous shipwreck after Titanic. In many ways, it can be considered a movie because it fully renacts the events which led up to the most famous sinking of World War I. Actor John Hannah, who was in all three "Mummy" movies as Jonathan, is the star of this docu-drama. The set used as the Lusitania herself does look almost identitcal to the real ship. Newsreel footage allegedly taken on May 1, 1915 the day the Lusitania set sail from New York on her fatal voyage is included. Also included is a full recreation of the infamous German submarine U-20 and her crew, who were responsible for torpedoing the Lusitania off the southern Irish coast on May 7, 1915, killing 1,195 innocent men, women and children. In just 18 minutes, the 785-foot long ship sank after listing completly to her starboard (right) side, the same side where the torpedo struck. Within seconds of the torpedo's impact, a secondary mysterious explosion occured farther forward; this is believed to have been the TRUE cause for the Lusitania's rapid destruction. To this day, no one can say for sure what caused it; whether it was a coal dust explosion, boilers or even the war supplies rumored to have been aboard near where the torpedo hit. Unfortunatley, the docu-drama does not go into detail as to what may have caused the secondary explosion. The feature does recreate the heart-breaking aftermath of the sinking; the recovery of floating bodies in Queenstown (now Cobh) Southern Ireland; the trial held the month after; and the fate of some of those who survivied. Hopefully, a movie shall be made one day to help keep the memory of those who perished alive; and to promote further education into World War I, for there are not a lot of movies based on the First World War as there are about World War II. The story of the Lusitania coincides with her great rival TITANIC; its the story of one of the world's most luxurious, biggest and fastest ships that ever existed. And like the story of Titanic, the richest people in the world traveled aboard her during this final voyage. In many ways, the sinking of the Lusitania is perhaps somewhat more tragic than TITANIC; it was a deliberate murderous act of war upon a ship of innocent souls.

The passenger ship Lusitania was en route home when a German sub blew it out of the water, killing more than 1,000 men, women and children. The sinking of this great ocean liner shocked the world, and "Avenge the Lusitania!" was the rallying cry that lured many young American men to enlist during World War I. In this dramatic 85-minute special, Discovery Channel brings you the story of the doomed ship and, for the first time, goes inside the cramped, foul-smelling hull of the U-boat that fired the fateful torpedo.

Category 7: The End of the World (2005) Review

Category 7: The End of the World (2005)

I've always been open to watching these disaster movies. Volcano, Twister, Day of Tomorrow ... all good films in their own right, despite what the movie critics say about them.
Category 7: End of the World was a very entertaining movie. I think too many entertainment fans spend too much time over-analyzing movies that are made by the entertainment industry instead of enjoying it for what it is, quality entertainment. While I haven't seen the previous film, Category 6, I plan on purchasing the movie to see how this series started.
While it's not too impossible to believe, such events as what is seen in this film could very well become true. With the rising cost of oil and the fact that the greenhouse effect and global warming are impacting our enviropnment, this movie does have a very moral lesson to show anyone who watches this movie. We must protect our environment before it starts to react to our presence on this world.
It was refreshing to see Shannon Doherty and her authentic talent coming to the surface. She had been released from Beverly Hills 90210 and Charmed because of her attitude with producers and directors but it was refreshing to see her performing true to her nature and having a role that was written just for her. She is a wonderful actress and it's time more and more roles were written specifically for her. Randy Quaid is also the consummate actor who always seems to manage to steal every scene he's in.
But, I was disapponted that the US Government and the politicians that are portrayed in this movie seem content in facing the ultimate destruction of Mother Nature and protecting the interests of the large corporations, oil cartels and special interests instead of safeguarding the lives of the people. It shows a lack of original thinking on the part of the writers, who should have gone to a few more creative writing courses before sitting down to write this movie. In addition, I felt that this movie was a little longer than it should have been. Hopefully, there'll be a little more of a waiting period before we see Category 8, which will be coming our way faster than we can turn off the power.

Superfire (2002) Review

Superfire (2002)

For a movie that focuses on pilots, fire-jumpers and fire the cockpit SFX are truly badly done and almost feel 1970's. That aside the basic storyline of a hotshot pilot who feels he's caused the death of some fire-jumper friends and drops out of circulation, only to return on discovery of a 'super fire'. Cliched but made more believable with excellent fire SFX.
The fire shelter scene is especially intense and well done while the rest of the movie is watchable with flashes of brilliance (sometimes literally!).
