When Dinosaurs Roamed America (2001) Review

When Dinosaurs Roamed America (2001)

Five years ago, I probably would have given When Dinosaurs Roamed America a rave review. It is a good dinosaur special, well done overall and with interesting effects. But in the post-Walking with Dinosaurs era, it's a bit of a letdown. The animation is not as good, nor is the writing as sharp.

One other note: John Goodman is really not up the level of either Kenneth Branaugh (British version of Walking with Dinosaurs as well as the DVD version) or Avery Brooks (the version of Walking With Dinosaurs shown on the Discovery Channel). The latter two treat it as a serious nature special. Goodman's narration makes it sound like he's narrating a children's TV special, not a nature special.

Brainy Baby - Spanish (2002) Review

Brainy Baby - Spanish (2002)

When I saw one of the very negative reviews, I thought this person was exaggerating given that I had bought the Brainy Baby for French DVD and thought it was really good (quality and all), but I needed to buy an educational DVD for my 18 mo. old daughter in Spanish since is too my very first mother tongue. I decided to buy this DVD, specially because there are not many out there of this kind. When I saw it, I thought it wasn't that bad. It does have accents where there should be, and question marks (Did this person referred to an old version?) However, they did use a couple of words that I would not use in spanish so it's useless to teach a toddler words she would not use, like the word for ball (pelota), they used "bola". I think pelota is more widely used, not just in Mexico. That is my only criticism; they should have used a term that is common for many countries, so I think they should have done a little more research and the narrator would be fine. Her pronunciation is fenomenal (regardless whether or not she is a native speaker, it doesn't matter!). The content of the video is great, just what a toddler needs to learn a language in a fun way. My daughter enjoyed this DVD from beginning to end. It's just good enough to entertain my daughter without mindless TV cartoons.

Vice Guide to Travel (2006) Review

Well... I'm never really let down with Vice, however this video left me with that feeling as though I was blue balled. Why? Well I thought it was going to be someone informative or show so actual stuff but the whole DVD came across as a fake. They get wasted and chat with people and nothing seems to add up. I mean getting drunk and going to places is fun and all but I felt this movie just didn't pack any punch.
vice... you have let me down with this one. Don't think I'll be purchasing another DVD from you in the near future but I will keep all your mags as they rule.

WARNING! The VICE Guide To Travel contains nudity, guns, drugs, cussing, and assorted other heaviness. If you are easily offended, put this DVD down and walk away now.The VICE GUIDE TO TRAVEL is the first installment in our new DVD series. We'll be doing these four times each year according to a different theme. It's a lot like Vice Magazine, except it moves. For this first one we dispatched correspondents all over the world to vist the planet's weirdest and most dangerous places. We went to such farflung locales as the Pygmy villages in the Congo, the radioactive ruins of Chernobyl, and the illegal arms markets of Pakistan. We looked for mythical beasts, met the PLO boy scouts (suicide bombers of tomorrow), chatted with a man who sold black market nuclear warheads and hung out with Osama bin Laden, and got shot at in the slums of Rio. This is travel at its most bizarre, equal parts LSD and adrenaline, and sometimes we can't believe we made it back.

Amazing Johnathan - Wrong On Every Level (2006) Review

Amazing Johnathan - Wrong On Every Level (2006)

The Amazing Johnathan is a hilarious guy. He's one of the top comedy magicians in the world today, and this special highlights why. Keep in mind this isn't for everyone though. One of his trademarks is the ability to find creative ways to give someone the finger, and he does so many times throughout.
While this can't be described as family entertainment by any means, it IS a pretty funny way to spend an hour. His original Comedy Central Presents appearance is included here and though there are a few similar moments, there's enough new stuff to make it worth watching.
I would have liked to have seen this cleaned up a bit so everyone could enjoy it, but at least it's out there. This show is almost exactly what aired on CC earlier this year. The "Uncensored" parts are mostly concerning not blurring out the finger and a couple of different props that weren't seen on the special.
Not recommended for the family, but if you know what you're getting into it's funny. A little gross sometimes (the razor blade trick, for instance), but overall good.
