Coupling - The Complete First Season (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)When they get around to posting an editorial review here, inevitably the comparisons between Coupling and Friends will fly. Don't pay attention. Yes there are superficial similarities -- 6 attractive singles evenly divided between men and women, etc. -- but this is comedy in the great British tradition of farce and has much more in common with Fawlty Towers or Blackadder than with any American sitcom. I'll admit that the incessant need to label the unlabelable (word?) owes a debt to Seinfeld, though.
Episodes included on this first season set are:
"Flushed" -- Steve (the beset Jack Davenport) tries, mostly unsuccessfully, to break up with Jane (the mad Gina Bellman), while beginning a relationship with Susan (the radiant Sarah Alexander).
"Size Matters" -- Steve and Susan's relationship reaches a new level. Sally (the moisturized Kate Isitt) is horrified by Patrick's (the swaggering Ben Miles) political beliefs.
"Sex, Death and Nudity" -- Everyone ends up at Jane's aunt's funeral. Jeff (the crazed Richard Coyle) has his job interview strategy boomerang on him.
"Inferno" -- Susan discovers Steve's video collection. A dinner party goes awry.
"The Girl with Two Breasts" -- Jeff tries to connect with a girl who doesn't speak English.
"The Cupboard of Patrick's Love" -- Susan discovers that her ex (Patrick) has videotape of her in a compromised position.
There is a second season of nine episodes currently in rotation on BBCAmerica for you digital cable subscribers. And a third season has just begun airing in England.
Also, word is that an Americanized version of this show is being groomed as a replacement for ... aw, you guessed it. The soon-to-end Friends. See where it all began here.
And see where it (probably) was a whole lot funnier. Unfair pre-judgment. But probably true.

Coupling - The Complete Third Season (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Coupling is one of my very favorite shows for several reasons: the terrific actors, the solid scripts, and it simply makes me laugh more than most other sitcoms. This season features a lot of farce and new Jeffisms (such as "porn jelly" and "secret listeners"), but there is also more of an emotional depth given to all of the characters. I can't review the DVD itself yet, but if the special features and presentation are anything like they were on the second season DVD, that would be fabulous. Here is a recap of the seven episodes of this season:
1.) Split - Picking up where season two left off, we follow Steve and Susan (in a split-screen format) after their breakup. The men and the women head to their own versions of the "Temple of Woman", before Steve and Susan reunite again.
2.) Faithless - Jane falls for a handsome co-worker at her radio station, James, the host of a Christian program. Meanwhile, Jeff tries to figure out whether his pretty co-worker Wilma likes him as a friend or as something more.
3.) Unconditional Sex - Wilma admits her sexual attraction to Jeff, despite her having a boyfriend and him being involved with Julia. Jeff tries to find a way to stay faithful to Julia without offending Wilma, and confusion ensues.
4.) Remember This - Patrick shows up at Sally's apartment at 3am, believing Sally had called him to get rid of a spider. It turns out that he had dreamed about the phone call, and he interrups her night with another man. This later prompts Sally and Patrick to reminisce about their first meeting. They describe two very different versions of what happened to their friends.
5.) The Freckle, The Key, and The Couple Who Weren't - Jeff and Julia's kinky evening is interrupted by the sudden return of Julia's ex-boyfriend Joe; Steve and Susan discuss "nether freckling"; Jane is dismayed when she learns surprising details about her new boyfriend, James.
6.) The Girl With One Heart - Much to Steve's horror, Susan removes the lock on their bathroom door. Later, Patrick brings his new girfriend to Susan and Steve's dinner party, which leads to a misunderstanding between her and Sally.
7.) Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps - Sally thinks she's pregnant, so she asks Susan and Jane to take pregnancy tests together with her. The tests get mixed up, but one of them is positive, meaning that one of them is pregnant. Meanwhile, Jane and Jeff bond over their failed relationships with James and Julia, respectively, and Patrick and Sally finally address their feelings for each other.
If you haven't seen the first two seasons, I urge you rush out and buy them. But this season is even better, and I can't wait for this DVD to be released.

'Allo 'Allo The Complete Collection (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)From the creators of the venerable British sitcom "Are You Being Served?" comes this 85-episode collection: the continuing adventures of "humble cafe owner" Rene Artois (Gorden Kaye) who is constantly dragooned into aiding the desperate efforts of Resistance fighters against the Nazis in wartime France. Like "Are You Being Served?," the scripts are full of double entendres, single entendres, farcical pursuits and intrigues, crazy comedy props, and plenty of verbal and visual jokes, delivered by a solid ensemble cast. In the many bawdy situations where a broader comedian would mug shamelessly, Gorden Kaye's sheepish subtlety scores every time.
This is a serial, so the episodes must be watched in sequence to follow the insane storyline. Among the plot points running through the series are a frenzied hunt for a missing painting, the equally frenzied concealment of two clueless British airmen, pompous posturing by military officers and Gestapo spies, the tunneling INTO a prisoner-of-war camp, clandestine romances forced upon Rene by anyone in skirts (even the Resistance girls can't resist Rene, and one of the German officers has eyes for him, too), everybody adopting cross-dressing disguises at one time or another, and any number of wild schemes to harass and hinder German battle plans, involving ridiculous and ingeniously engineered props.
This viewer had seen the first three dozen episodes on public television before the station discontinued the series, so it was great to see so many more episodes. This 19-disc collection presents all 85 half-hours, and there isn't a lemon in the bunch. Even when the jokes are predictable, it's the reactions of the various characters that often carry the comedy. The series survived many personnel changes on both sides of the cameras, and viewers will probably become fans who will find their own favorite characters and portrayals.
There are many "Allo, Allo"-related bonus features in the DVD set, including an episode of "Blankety Blank" (the British "Match Game") and a documentary about the series as a whole (on disc 16 -- DON'T watch it until you've seen all 19 discs, because the documentary gives the series' ending away).
HIghly recommended for comedy fans, and delightfully habit-forming viewing: we enjoyed watching an episode almost every night for three months.

(More customer reviews)I picked this up the day it was released. Yes, you can watch "Coupling" on BBC America, but these DVD's are worth it, because they still edit some content for time. With Season 2, you get the following 9 episodes:
THE MAN WITH TWO LEGS: Jeff finally works up the nerve to approach a girl on the tube whose leg he's been gawking at each day. Will he blow it with another one of his bumbling lines?
MY DINNER IN HELL: Steve bumps into a television presenter he's always fantasized about, and Jane has a fool-proof hairbrained scheme that she swears will help she and Sally meet her.
HER BEST FRIENDS BOTTOM: Steve makes a surprise visit at Susan's apartment, thinking it is she in the shower. It's Sally, and the entire episode revolves around that fact that Steve saw her bottom.
THE MELTY MAN COMETH: Will Patrick and Sally finally come together? If Patrick doesn't stop "failing" then perhaps they can!
JANE AND THE TRUTH SNAKE: In possibly one of the funniest episodes ever, Jane loses her job as traffic reporter. Never fear! She has a career plan up her sleeve that involves children's entertainment and a sock puppet. That's all I'll say.
GOTCHA: One year after their first date, a wedding invite is sent to Steven and Susan. Steve, of course, panics into thinking Susan will now pe expecting a proposal herself.
DRESSED: The meaning of Jane's invite to a dinner date is misunderstood, and she shows up naked under her coat. When she arrives to a flat full of guests, she has to do some quick thinking (rather a lot for Jane, really!).
NAKED: Jeff's 30th birthday is coming, and his workmates have planned a surprise celebration for him. Again, invites are misunderstood and Jeff ends up stripping down naked in front of his workmates...and his parents!
THE END OF THE LINE: Steve and Susan both assume aliases to swap phone numbers with other people in a bar, but the hilarity ensues when they realize it's with each other!
Extras include more interviews with the cast and executive producer. What they really need is some outtakes, because I have a feeling they'd be hilarious! Worth every penny.

This time we get series 4 which appears to indicate Warner/BBC has gotten the message that we want all the series released in order. Series 4 has 8 episodes, 6 of which aired in 1977 and 2 in 1978.

A rare 1977 interview with show Creator/Writer Roy Clarke.
Unfortunately, this series does *not* include the episode "Small Tune on a Penny Wassail" which aired on 26 December 1978. This is a "Christmas Special" which are not typically considered part of a series by the BBC. Hopefully we'll see this episode on a "Christmas Specials" release.
The picturesque Pennine village of Holmfirth in the Yorkshire Dales is the setting for the antics of our aging delinquents and their oddball friends and fellow townspeople. Miles and miles of unspoilt moorland, and a breath-taking backdrop to the adventures of Compo, Clegg, Foggy.
As I've mentioned before, if you've not seen any of the episodes before don't be suprised if you are lukewarm to the program upon first viewing. This is a show that grows on you with each episode.
Now that Warner/BBC has blessed us with the next series I have but one request. Let's get on with it! With 6 months between series it will take another 12 years to get it all released! I, for one, do not wish to wait that long!
OK... I have 2 requests. The 2nd is: Stop pricing these short 6-10 episode series the same as series containing 24-32 episodes. This gross overpricing is typical of almost *all* BBC releases.

For the most part, the gang is back. Penelope Keith, Peter Bowles and Angela Thorne return 25 years later for an hour Christmas special. It's Audrey and Richard's silver wedding anniversary and the couple prepare to celebrate in style. However, something is about to disturb life at the estate and Audrey, with the help of her old friend Marjorie, has to rescue 400 years of history. She also has to defend a community and save her marriage at the same time.
This show has not been shown on American TV (maybe this year on BBC America or PBS.) But if you cannot wait, buy the dvd! What is amazing that everyone is still around.

One Foot in the Grave: The Complete Series (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)One Foot In the Grave is one of the most cleverly written and funniest sitcoms you are ever likely to see. The main character Victor Meldrew is an iconic figure in British comedy. While on the surface he seems to be just a grouchy old man he is in fact a very deep thinker who tries his best to do what is right in a world he doesn't generally agree with. Sometimes things go his way but usually the result is disaster. The supporting cast are all brilliant, his neighbors Patrick and Pippa are forever catching him in awkward situations and are convinced he is insane. His feud with Patrick is one of the most hilarious parts of this show.
I don't personally know anyone else who is familiar with this show, I don't think it has ever been shown on PBS in my area although I know it has been show in other parts of the country at some point. One Foot is a show which I believe deserves a huge cult following here in the US if it were just more well known. In a way you could compare it a bit to Seinfeld in that there are usually several storylines in an episode that converge in the end, again usually adding up to disaster for Victor.
There are so many zany, surreal moments in this show that I couldn't start to list them here. My advice is just buy it and see for yourself. If you appreciate British humor you will in no way be disappointed. I might add that the theme song is written and performed by the legendary Eric Idle of Monty Python fame, he also guest stars in one episode.
One word of advice, if you own a multi-region dvd player try amazon.co.uk for the region two version of the box set as it is much, much cheaper than the region one version, this is true of almost all BBC dvds as well.

The grim reaper finally gets to Victor Meldrew. He may not arrive in the form of a strangely-shaped unordered parcel, as a workman with the intellect of an orangutan, or even as Meldrew-fixated ex-neighbor Patrick, but he better be prepared to listen: Victor might have a few complaints to make!

Edgar, Simon and Jess created a program which speaks directly to a specific group of people with whom they share so much in common. If you get the subtle inside jokes, you feel special, if not, you love it anyway because it's just so unique and funny. Spaced lays the foundation for many ongoing jokes (much like Kevin Smith's universe) in subequent Wright/Pegg/Frost films Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. I own the UK version and will absolutely be buying this release too! Quite frankly, I'll buy anything from Edgar, Simon or Nick!

Roy Clarke's Open All Hours: The Complete Series (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)"Open All Hours" (1976 - 1985) is #8 on the "Britian's Best Sitcom" list from a poll conducted in 2004 by the BBC, ITV, and Channel 4. Instead of drawn out, overpriced, single series releases we get the entire program of 4 series (25 episodes) at once this time at a reasonable price! Special features are to include the pilot which aired as an episode of the 1973 series "Seven of One".
Written by Roy Clarke ("Last of the Summer Wine", "Keeping Up Appearances") the series takes place primarily in a small grocer's shop, in Doncaster in South Yorkshire. The owner, a middle-aged, tight-fisted man, will stop at nothing to keep his profits high and his overhead low. He has a pronounced stammer and a knack of being able to sell anything. His put upon nephew is his errand boy, whose attempts at a love-life or even just a social life fall flat. He blames his uncle that he has to be up early to open the shop and stay late to close it.
Nurse Gladys Emmanuel, Arkwright's long-standing fiancée, and only weakness, lives across the road. Arkwright spends an inordinate amount of time attempting to make her marry, or at least sleep with him.
The primary characters in the series are:
Ronnie Barker (Porridge) - Arkwright, the shop owner
David Jason (Only Fools and Horses) - Granville, his nephew
Lynda Baron - Nurse Gladys Emmanuel
Keep your eyes open for Kathy Staff (Last Of the Summer Wine) and Stephanie Cole (Waiting For God) as customers.
Sometimes quaint, sometimes dark, and always with that dry British humor and penchant for the double entendre this is another in a string of fabulously funny sitcoms from across the pond!

This is a wonderful series from the BBC about everyone's favorite social climber, Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced "bouquet"). Her house is spick-and-span. Richard, her long-suffering and hen-pecked husband, keeps the car in immaculate condition (under Hyacinth's every-watchful eye). The empty milk bottles sparkle on the doorstep after their obligatory rinse in the dishwasher. To Hyacinth's horror and shame, most of her family is dead common, living together in a rundown house that looks like a junkyard. Sister Daisy and her husband, Onslow, are out-and-out slobs while another other sister, Rose, is an aging tart, and Daddy is not quite "all there". At least she is proud of her 3rd sister, Violet, the one "with the Mercedes, a sauna, and room for a pony" although Violet's husband is a cross-dresser and somewhat of an embarrassment to Hyacinth. However, she loves them all, and never fails to rush to their assistance when they need her help. Often it is Daddy that has got into an embarrassing situation which Hyacinth (or Richard) has to always solve.
Highly recommended!

Clatterford: The Complete Season Two (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I've been waiting impatiently for the second series of this delightful British show (titled Jam and Jerusalem there) to be available on this side of the pond. Although it still hasn't aired here on BBC America, I did catch these episodes in 9-minute chunks on YouTube (certainly not the best way to catch a TV show, but grateful for the access anyway). It's a sweet, funny, and very poignant character study of the quirky women of Clatterford, a small fictional village in Devon. If you've not seen series 1, don't think you're getting another AbFab from the brilliant Jennifer Saunders. This is a very different show. Like series one, it showcases the gentler side of English village life that is sadly passing away.

(More customer reviews)This very witty BBC series of the 70s stars Penelope Keith (formerly of The Good Life aka Good Neighbors) and Peter Bowles (many many supporting dramatic roles). When rich from birth Audrey Fforbes-Hamilton (Keith) loses her husband, she learns that he left her completely penniless and is forced to auction off the family manor. The estate gets bought Richard Devere (Bowles) an eccentric millionaire in the food business. Moving into a small cottage on the estate, Audrey with help from her friend Marjorie and her butler spends the next few years doing everything her power to get her ancestral home and place in society back including falling in love with the new "Lord of the Manor". This newly released set includes a newly released "silver anniversary" reunion disc which is also available separately for those of you who (like me) own the earlier released set. Chances are the earlier (blue) set will eventually get discontinued, so like series (plural) like Vicar of Dibley and others that have released revised box sets (years after previous releases of the "complete series"), the deal is this: if you have the old set like me, order the separate copy of the silver anniversary disc, if you don't, then order this set (currently a better price than the older set alone) and you'll get all the discs together.
