(More customer reviews)I was extremely excited when I saw this had come out on DVD. I've been a Pound Puppies fan since I was little, and to have at least of piece of that on DVD is very cool. The story's fun, and as a kid (and even now) the characters are lively and enjoyable.
There wasn't anything amazing about the DVD, but one of the features I liked (that isn't present on all DVDs) was the direct play. No pesky button pushing. They haven't done anything fancy with the animation but, being as it was released in 1988, the quality isn't bad anyway. It's as I remember it, and it's fun to hear the voices again and reconnect with the characters.
A great movie for fans, young and old, as well as those who haven't seen it yet!

U2 - Best of 1990-2000 (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)Quick Overview: This DVD is both an excellent survey of U2's music during the past decade and a fascinating anthology of music videos, both conceptual and performance. Musically, it contains all of the songs from the regular release of the CD "U2: The Best of 1990-2000", with the exception that "For the First Time" is replaced by "The Fly". In addition, it contains seven bonus tracks, songs lamented by many for not being included on the CD. Cinematically, it boasts both performance and conceptual videos of varying quality; with the inclusion of intriguing director commentaries, many of the videos merit multiple viewings. Alternate videos for "Even Better Than The Real Thing", "One", "Stuck in a Moment...", "Staring at the Sun", and "Numb" are provided to yield a total of 28 music videos for 23 songs. As a special treat, three documentaries are included. All in all, this is an amazing DVD.
Details, Shot One ("Conceptual Videos"): The most successful conceptual videos are "Numb" (Godley version), "Please", and "If God Will Send His Angels". The "Numb" video bluntly demonstrates the cause of The Edge's numbness--it's also quite funny and disturbing. "Please" and "If God Will Send His Angels" are probably my favorites. Bono's performance in "Please" is poignant, and the gimic employed by Corbijn works well here. The use of split screen and altered film speed in "If God Will Send..." effectively communicates that awful out-of-sync feeling of being alone among people, even among friends.
"One" deserves special mention. Three videos were made for this. Pellington's version, employed in concert, emphasized buffalos, images of which adorn both the CD and DVD; sadly, this video was NOT included on the DVD. The other two videos are here, and they are interesting. Corbijn's version is notable for having Bono's father playing a major role; in addition, you get to decide which member of U2 would make the most attractive woman--I don't think it's Bono.
Details, Shot Two ("Performance Videos"): What would U2 be without footage of them on stage? Many of these videos, including conceptual ones, feature perforance footage. Some, like "Gone" and "Mofo", are essentially concert videos; I prefer watching these songs on the Zoo TV and PopMart videos. Others, like "Even Better Than the Real Thing", "Mysterious Ways", and "Staring at the Sun", utilize novel filming techniques to
bolster the song's mood or message. Some are more successful than others. For example, at first boring, the strange effects in "Staring at the Sun" (Scott version) become almost revelatory at the end. In "Please" and "One", expressions on The Edge's face at key points of the video are very telling and make the inclusion of performance footage mandatory.
One Drop of Sad: These are minor quibbles. 1) Navigation is sometimes frustrating. You click on the director's name and you get either the video OR the video with commentary. If you click on the triangle beside his name, you definitely get commentary. If you have the same trouble, keep trying; eventually, you will get the straight video. 2) With "Mofo", I had to try accessing the video several times before I heard the soundtrack. "Mofo" was the only video with which I had this problem. 3) Although the box claims subtitles in five languages, I did not find Japanese subtitles actually provided for the songs I checked, and I checked most of them. 4) Some songs, like "Beautiful Day" and "One", had alternate videos. It would have been nice to have ALL versions. (This is a BEST OF anthology, so maybe they only included the best of the alternates?)
Extra Tidbits: The DVD booklet provides interesting, albeit short, notes on each song. The DVD package provides storage space for the U2 The History Mix DVD, that came with the special edition of "The Best of 1990-2002" CD.
In Summary: This is an outstanding DVD. It contains most, arguably the best, of the singles from 1990-2000 with their videos, all of which contain something of at least passing interest and some of which are very powerful. The director commentaries are fascinating and provide valuable behind-the-scenes information. The documentaries are a nice addition. I highly recommend "U2: The Best of 1990-2002"; it's one of the best DVDs I've bought this year.

VH1 Storytellers - Billy Idol (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Billy Idol rules. I have been a diehard fan for 21 years, since I was 13. I saw him 3 times in the '80s-'90s and have been back for more 3 times in the new millenium. Billy rocks as hard as ever and his music is as fresh and exciting today as it was when it was written.
This DVD is a must-own for anyone with even a passing Idol fancy. The sound is superb, the band is tight and exhilarating, and Sir William is in fine form, rocking out in excellent voice and looking terrific. He is a fantastic storyteller with a great sense of humor. You feel, watching and listening to him spin his tales, that you've gone round the pub with him for a pint. He is thoughtful, intelligent, and really funny.
Although every single song on this DVD is amazing and sounds wonderful in this setting, two deserving special mention are the Gen X classics "Kiss Me Deadly" and "The Untouchables". Billy introduces "Kiss Me Deadly" by explaining how the song came to be and his heartfelt delivery is truly touching. These two songs are so dear to him (and me) and witnessing his performance of them brought a tear to my eye.
It is a testament to the man and his music that every single song sounds so vibrant in this stripped down setting. And Steve Stevens is nothing short of brilliant.
Don't wait - order this via "1-click" immediately! And Billy - we want more, more, more!

(More customer reviews)Don't let the April 28 posting deter you. With all due respect, it was based on the 20 minute Amazon clip, NOT a viewing of the actual DVD.
I purchased the European (PAL) version of this DVD last fall (Virgin Records has a tendancy to release the good stuff in Europe first, then it comes to the U.S.). Based on the cover art and Amazon description, this is the U.S/Canada version (i.e., Region 1) of the European release. Thus, it is the COMPLETE video collection PLUS the A Kiss Across the Ocean concert.
It is an excellent compilation with all of the classic music videos and more. I had never seen the videos for Victims, Mistake No. 3 (check out that GIANT wedding cake!) and The Medal Song.

After being terribly disapointed for the previous 2003 released of the new Astro boy, I was surprised to find out this new released of the orginal 1980 series to become a must-have for all those astro fans. This is the real Astro boy, Tetsuwan Atom!!
Above all the best treat from this set was: IT CONTAINS THE ORGINAL SOUNDTRACK!! not only in English, but in JAPANESE also!!!! Not only dose it contain it, and also the sound quality was amazingly well-preserved!! Even though on the cover it says 51 half hour episodes in English. I fell deeply soul-stirring while listening to the orginal theme song, of which was the one song that was never left out from my childhood memory!! The picture quality was excellent too. Followed by the artworks, performances, and the outstanding script all created by Osamu Tezuka himself, have all made this collection to be priceless!! This boxset also contains an exquisite booklet, and with all other special features I have not yet seen, including the delected scenes from the orginal show, story board sequence, Character profiles and the gallery of the orginal manga cover.
When the enthusiastic scientist Doctor Tenma lost his only son Toby in a car crash, the ingenious robot engineer was determined to construct a boy robot in a hope to make up the lost of his only son, only to find out that the robot he created could never replace what he lost. Overcame by despair Astro left Tenma on a cruised, and was later on kidnaped by a evil manager of a robot circus, thus begins our excting adventures of Astro Boy!! In these adventures we discovered the everlasting strugles about human natures, industrial evolutions, environmental crisis and many other things.
Osamu Tezuka is the god of manga. In his life he created over 400 comic books, 60 different titles of animation. Astro was 1 of the earilest charcter he created. His masterpieces also include Jungle Emperor( the orginal Lion King ), Black Jack, Fire-bird the phoenix, Princess knight, Buddha, History of birdman, Ahundred tales, Metropilos and many other amazing creations. He said that the idear through his works is just a simple message, love all creatures, love everything that has life.
If only Osamu Tezuka was still alive today, he will be happy to witness his Astro Boy has been passed on to the younger generations. This DVD collection is a must-have for all people. Highly recomended for all ages, you will be surprised how much you are gonna enjoy this masterpiece!!

Duran Duran - Greatest - The DVD (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Featuring twenty-one songs, and clocking in just short of an hour and forty-five minutes, this compilation of Duran Duran's "greatest" videos is a much more generous and comprehensive overview of the group's wildly inconsistent 17-year career than anything currently available on CD. Well, let's face it, with Duran Duran the videos were always an essential part of the package that completed the (new) romantic promise of their already (fairly) good music.
"Planet Earth" (from 1981) looks amusingly quaint now: the Edwardian frill shirts and Kabuki makeup - along with the stiff-spastic-marionette dancing and Futurist sets - mark this early clip as a quintessential Blitz Kid time-capsule.
The uncensored "Girls on Film" still arouses us as an ever-dubious attempt to merge sub-Roxy Music decadence with a barrage of mid-Eighties Playboy-channel cliches (and I DO continue to relish the sweet sight of that LUSCIOUS boudoir tart straddling a feather-covered phallic pole in her sheer black scanties!). Still, "Girls" never transcends the surface titillation offered by its self-consciously chic litany of soft-core S&M-lite posturings, nor does it really have the guts to explore or confront its own darker implications.
The next video, "The Chauffeur," is the collection's darkly gleaming gem. Shot in intimate, otherworldly black-and-white, this insinuatingly erotic mini-epic about a femme-lesbian rendezvous at a desolate London underground parkade in the dead of night is, I believe, this group's musicodramatic masterpiece. Fluid, rhythmic crosscutting blends together the stark, luminous chiaroscuro imagery to devastating effect. And the ghostly sight of those three sculptured beauties swaying and undulating in their fetishistic undress...ahhh, you won't find anything as deeply or blissfully kinky as THAT on late-night cable these days!
The next three clips, "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Save A Prayer," and "Rio," are all well-known and still entertaining to watch. "Wolf" is the best of the three - as yet another tale of lustful pursuit and orgasmic conquest/submission, it combines cinematic allusions ("Gunga Din," "Bridge Over the River Kwai," and "Apocalypse Now") as camp signposts on a journey into the jungle heart of feral eroticism. "Save A Prayer" has some nice romantic images of Buddhist monuments and native youths stilt-fishing in the Indian Ocean, as well as a few panoramic aerial shots of a sacred plateau and a final procession of saffron-robed monks illuminated by torchlight. "Rio" is exuberantly naive and amateurish - this is the one with them posing on a yacht in the Caribbean, a neat trick which (unfortunately) convinced many that the group really did inhabit a continuous episode of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous."
"Is There Something I Should Know?" is a rather vague and arbitrary bit of classic New Wave kitsch-cryptic surrealism featuring men in Magritte bowler hats and forbiddingly spare Cubist décor, while "Union of the Snake" is merely a flaccid and indigestible boondoggle of Oriental menace and crude forced sexuality.
While a dandy little song by itself, the video for "New Moon on Monday" badly flubs its potentially intriguing premise - revolutionaries organizing an underground resistance movement in some unidentified Eastern European police state. In what has to be one of the most painful moments in all of music video history, our lads end up feebly pantomiming their exultant chorus like earnest teenage wannabes at a talent(less) competition...while several megatons of pyrotechnics detonate everywhere around them!
"The Reflex" is a colorful and well-made attempt at a fake "live" video - but the teenybopper quotient renders it just a little cringe-worthy. The legendary "Wild Boys" now looks like an hysterically overblown slab of "Thriller"-era excess - complete with absurd post-apocalyptic jungle-gym-cum-torture-rack sets; dizzyingly baroque camera angles and vertiginous cutting; snarling, shaven-headed zombies in alabaster body paint, tribal-dancing and somersaulting with atavistic abandon; our hero suspended from a tattered old windmill and...oh, I could go on, but why bother? On the other hand, "A View to a Kill" - the famed James Bond theme - compensates with a simple self-deprecating wit that makes it stand out as one of Duran X 2's most cleverly inventive and enjoyable videos. "Bon...Simon Le Bon," indeed!
After that we get "the new Duran Duran" - a bit less flashy, a bit more "mature." "Notorious" has some nice footage of lean, wiry female models jiving and strutting but the video is ruined by way too many herky-jery camera movements and worsened by frenzied, dissonant cutting. "Skin Trade" has a more controlled rhythm and makes an appealing use of vivid bright colors and matted backdrops. "I Don't Want Your Love" is still surprisingly fresh and fun...perhaps more so than it was the first time around. "All She Wants Is" is a vaguely DEVOesque domestic statement with a lot of blinding, distorted, hypnotic strobe-neon effects and a pretty, pouting girl that I can either love or leave.
The mid-tempo yawner "Serious" (the only semi-bearable moment from their gawdawful "Liberty" album) is the most negligible of the bunch here, as is the rather pointless retrospective sampling, "Burning the Ground."
"Ordinary World" is a triumphant return to form - gorgeous, melancholy romanticism beautifully realized with classical guitar and the lyrical image of a bride wandering amidst golden-toned boughs of weeping willow trees. "Come Undone" is another great song, although I'm not quite so sure about the video. Hmmm...an aquarium full of exotic sea creatures, a ginger-haired young siren chained underwater, a middle-aged dowdy inserting disparate household objects into a blender, a tortured transvestite confronting himself in the vanity mirror...are these folks all meant to represent displaced personalities who have "come undone"?
The recent (and mildly scandalous) "Electric Barbarella" is a catchy electronic dance ditty that brings Double D full circle (cf. Roxy Music's "In Every Dream-home a Heartache"). This last video - about a battery-operated, remote-controlled, life-sized Barbie-doll that suddenly animates to dizzy, ditzy life - is light-hearted and witty, it's also perversely, artificially sexy like a Pedro Almodovar film. Zap me, Barbie!

(More customer reviews)I absolutely LOVED this movie! Jean is soo cute too! they had a good plot, it was very funny, and the ending really summed everyhting up. This is a great teenager movie and even adults will get a kick out of it. My parents did. The only thing I would like to know if anybody knows where to get the soundtrack to this movie. I know that there was talk about it coming out but I cant find it. But anyway, I totally recommend this movie to kids and adults 11-12 and up.

Minutemen (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)I was surprised that this modest-budget, made for tv movie turned out to be one of the most entertaining comedies I've seen in a long time!! It was like a time-travel trip for me, transporting me back to those good ol' school days when all types of people were brushing shoulders and had to find ways to get by, before the worlds of adult segregation provide solutions for these social problems, of which high school is a microcosm.
The fact is that this film is smartly written, fast-paced, and has truly outstanding performances by its lead actors (and some of the supporting characters as well). Although it resorts to some "technobabble," intelligent viewers will quickly recognize the representations here and will, like me, probably feel right at home amidst the portrayals and characters. The script is a comedic one and I doubt anyone who understands the point of the film will complain about the fantastic nature of the "science" here. This film, rather, is of the type that will provide inspiration and moral support for intelligent young audiences, and affirmation and entertainment for older audiences looking back at youth with fond remembrance.
This is a true character-oriented comedy at heart (and it does also have a lot of heart!) and every Hollywood filmmaker should be FORCED to watch this movie as a lesson in what the COMEDY GENRE should be about! The film rarely resorts to the sort of pratfall antics that pervade other contemporary fare, and when such portrayals occur, there tends not to be the presumption that injury and misfortune are inherently funny. This is a good-hearted film for good, intelligent people. It's target audience will probably find it to be totally delightful!
And others who don't find it so? ... well, they're probably not in the intelligent clique, anyway and just can't (or refuse to) understand.
This film is a welcome breath of fresh air and honesty amidst so many other fear/macho-oriented pop culture products. Sometimes they really do make 'em like they used to! :-)
And heck! If the quality of the characters and cast can be maintained (or this original cast retained), why not turn this into a tv series or a set of sequels!? This is the type of film that truly deserves to be a smash hit! It's got things to say, but does it with good humor, fast wit, and character-oriented STYLE!!
Bravo!!

Little People Big World - Season 1 (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm going to let you in on a little secret...I hate reality television. Come to think of it, television programming in general has been on a fast decline for awhile now. It has become (at least for me) increasingly difficult to find something to watch without becoming bored. Reality T.V. is laced with too much ham, sitcoms are unbearably lame, and action shows are just insulting to my intelligence. With all this worthless debris cluttering the television waves it was a blessing to find Matt Roloff and his family.
Being a fan of the show and not wanting to spend $21.95 on the outrageously priced individual episode DVDs I found myself playing the waiting game for a full season DVD to grace the local department store shelves. Today the wait was over...
Season One is a three disc DVD set, the only downside to this is the packaging. It is made entirely of recycled cardboard with the DVDs having to be "slipped" in and out of place. A nice improvement would have been a plastic backing for the discs to sit in...this way the DVDs wouldn't have to rub against the cardboard everytime the discs are removed and returned to the case.
I was also surprised to see that out of the 20 episodes included in this set the pilot episode, entitled "Little People, Big Dreams" was absent. This is particularly important because this was the hour long episode that introduced us to the Roloff family back in March of 2005. I don't understand why this episode is excluded from this set considering the significance it carried.
Little People, Big World (Season One) gets a well-deserved 4 stars. Although the case was somewhat generic and the pilot epsiode missing I found the rest of the DVD set very well put together and the price very reasonable.

After some meager single disc releases and a two-episode tease on the Ghostbusters Double Feature Gift Set (Ghostbusters/ Ghostbusters 2 and Commerative Book), The Real Ghostbusters finally makes a proper arrival on DVD, and does so in style. This isn't some hack release thrown together for a quick buck - Time Life and Sony really went all out to give RGB the proper treatment, including Steelbook packaging, visual commentaries, interviews with the key talents, and more.
As mentioned by other reviewers, you can already grab the complete series set from the Time Life website, which has all 5 volumes, an exclusive Firehouse box and bonus disc. But if you're low on cash or only want a little RGB to satisfy that nostalgia craving, Volume 1 arguably gives you the most bang for your buck out of all the volumes. This set packs 30 episodes, the first 13 of which are the classic ABC season 1 shows, including memorable ghosts the Boogieman, Samhain, and Sandman. The Ghostbusters go Hollywood, Janine gets a genie, and Peter tells the story of how Slimer came to live in the firehouse. The other 17 episodes start the Season 1 syndicated package, including the episode "Knock Knock." The animation is at its strongest, Lorenzo Music and Arsenio Hall are on the cast, and the writing is at its best.
Individual volumes or complete series set, The Real Ghostbusters is a must buy on DVD. The show holds up much better than most 80s fare, and is great for original and new fans alike.

The Real Ghostbusters: Complete Collection (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I was a huge Ghostbusters fan growing up in the 80s, and still am to this day. This cartoon left such an indelible impression on me that throughout the past 20 years different quotes or musical cues from the series often sprang into my head for no reason at all.
I purchased the individual discs that Sony put out a few a few years back but was just left pining for more. I was ecstatic when I heard the entire series was being released. I purchased the entire box set from Time Life a couple months back. I considered waiting until volume 1 was released on it's own but once I saw the firehouse packaging and the bonus disc that was included, I had to get it. Besides, I'm not very patient.
The extras are plentiful and the menus are nicely done. Some episodes have introductions, some have isolated score and sound effects tracks, and some have commentary.
Each volume comes in a beautifully decorated solid steel book case and contains five discs per volume, aside from volume 5 which has only four discs.
The episodes all look and sound great and are each shown in their entirety, including the talking logo that was used when going to and coming back from commercial breaks. In fact, if I were to have one complaint about the set, it's that the talking logo grows a bit tiresome. With six or seven episodes per disc, and the talking logo showing up about five or six times per episode, you're looking at having to see it around thirty to forty times if you select the `play all' option. I think it should have been featured as a bonus gallery. However, that complaint is so minor that it doesn't take anything away from this release.
This set truly sets a standard that other `complete series' sets should strive to achieve. With the release of the entire animated series and the upcoming releases of both the original film on Blu-ray and the video game in June, this is shaping up to be a very big year for us Ghostbusters fans.

Housed in a collectible Ghostbuster's firehouse keepcase (complete with lenticular holograms of Slimer and the Ghostbusters logo) are five Amaray (plastic) DVD cases. Each DVD case comprises one volume of the show, with five discs in each, except for Volume 5, which has four discs. (More customer reviews)This film looks at the McMartin trial of the 1980s from the point of view of one afflicted family and assumes that the children were telling the truth. Although the names have been changed to protect the "innocent" this movie uses so much of what those trials were about. Seen in this light the movie is more than a horror story because it does not bring into account the interrogations of the children by Kee McFarlane. There is a therapist mentioned numerous times in this movie but his storyline only implies to the fact that Kee McFarlane had planted false memories into the minds of the children, essentially brain-washing them into believing the McMartins had commited various child-abuse crimes. Where the actual horror of this movie comes in is the descriptions of the abuse taking place at the preschool.
After fleeing justice two of the young teachers actually manage to set up residence in another community and attempt to continue forcing their sickness on children.
From this point of view, if you believe the children, the movie is angering because it tells to much of the horrific allegations brought against the McMartins.
Since this movie is a fictionalized account of the so-called "witch-hunts" of the 1980s I would not take much of this as the truth about the McMartin trial.
However as an account of the allegations of that era and the power these types of allegations wield due nothing more to than rumor it is a horror story of a justice system no longer in control of itself.

Doctor Who: The Trial of a Time Lord (Stories 144 - 147) (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)So far, all the reviews have been about the actual 14-episode story on this DVD. Let me start by quickly saying how much I love this season-long epic. I know, I know...it has its flaws, it was riddled with behind-the-scenes turmoil which kept the story from really coming together onscreen, some of the trial scenes simply don't make sense, etc.....but I still love everything about it. I've always loved Colin's portrayal of the Doctor and I think some of his best work is in this season. He was obviously VERY happy to be back to work on the show he loved after a long hiatus.
But "Trial of a Timelord" has been written about a great deal, and other reviewers here have already given you very good reviews of the actual story. My review, then, is about "the rest of the story"....the DVD packaging of "Trial".
Which, by the way, is excellent.
Even if you don't love this season, you have to admit that this is one of the strongest collections of special features on any Doctor Who DVD. What is most admirable here is that the team that puts together these DVDs did't shy away from the controversy that surrounded this season. These features aren't "Doctor Who Confidential" styled pats-on-the-back. The features show the good and the bad in equal measure.
Here are some of the highlights:
- There's a "making of" documentary for each of the four stories that make up "Trial". These are all really great, very entertaining and educational. But the highlights are seeing Tony Selby and Brian Blessed talk about their time on the show. They very obviously loved doing it.
- There's a 55 minute documentary on Colin's time as the Doctor. It goes into great details about the detioration of the relationship between John Nathan-Turner and Eric Saward, the hiatus, the reasons behind the "Trial" story, Colin's firing....its really good. Its a very revealing, "cards on the table" type of discussion. Its amazing to see that even 25 years later, talking about this stuff is difficult for Colin. Its also great to see Eric Saward talk about his role in alienating people who had been his friends and co-workers.
- There's a short bit of commentary with Colin and Nicola watching the scene in Part 14 where the script, at JNT's urging, undoes Peri's death from Part 8 by saying she was living happily-ever-after with King Yrcanos. While Nicola was aware that they'd done that....she'd never seen the scene in question. Her reaction to it is pretty interesting.
- There's a great documentary on what would have been Season 23 had the hiatus not happened and they'd gone on to do Colin's second season as planned. Most of this is pretty well known, and three of the stories were later released as novels. But this is illustrated by new artwork, is narrated by Colin, and talks about each of the stories and the shape of the season. Very enlightening.
- There's a fun little half-hour piece on cliffhangers. Authors, editors and scriptwriters talking about the show's cliffhangers -- which ones were great, which ones didn't work, which ones could have been brillian but weren't, etc. A very fun piece.
- There's a fairly substantial clip from a talk show after the end of the season that has a group of people from one of the DW fan clubs talking about the "Trial" season, and what a mess it was, and if fans couldn't follow it how could the general public? So after a series of comments from each of them, the host says "Well, now lets hear from the producer and the writers of this season". John Nathan-Turner and Pip & Jane Baker seemed genuinely caught off guard to learn that these people didn't completely love their work! It's really interesting viewing.
All-in-all its a stellar package. The sound in particular is cleaned up very nicely. And the picture looks great. There seems to be more contrast in the opening courtroom scenes, where the set looks a bit more darkly lit and moodier. Even if I were't a fan of this season, I would probably give this DVD release of it 5 stars simply on the strength of the packaging, the extras, and the great lengths that the Restoration Team went to to bring us a very thorough and enlightening set. Very well worth the money. I highly recommend this set!

Doctor Who: Black Orchid (Story 121) (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)If it weren't for this story, I would be left scratching my head and wondering why the hell these four individuals (they were barely a TARDIS team) would hang around each other for so long. Adric just becomes an obnoxious brat with the Fifth Doctor, Tegan just wants to go home, and Nyssa gets shunted to the sidelines every damn time. With the Sixth Doctor and Peri, there were moments in every story where you could tell they were close friends, which is absent with this team.
Except for this story.
Black Orchid, a two-parter that's a bit of a diversion, but it was needed, in my opinion, before the emotional-roller coaster known as Earthshock. A light-hearted adventure that you can sit down and relax to after doing a long shift of work, or even if you've come from a night about the town (like I did on the day I bought this.) The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa, the best Fifth Doctor combination, both get to shine here, Nyssa with Sarah Sutton's double role with Ann, finally giving Nyssa something to do in a story, and the Fifth Doctor, who shows off his amazing cricket skills, bringing a team back from a pathetic score (though I don't think even the Fifth Doctor could help England against Australia!)
And where the TARDIS crew get along? The scenes at Cranleigh Manor are easily some of my favourite of the Fifth Doctor era, where Tegan shows Nyssa some of the Earth dances and cheering on the Doctor in cricket, and Nyssa just looks more amused than ever at these bizarre rituals. Not to mention where they both gently mock Adric about his constant eating (how large are Alzarian stomachs anyway?) Adric for once is actually likeable.
Surprisingly, there are no science fiction elements whatsoever, a throwback to the early Doctor Who days where sci-fi and history genres went hand-in-hand, it's more like a murder mystery, a whodunit, where the Doctor becomes trapped while getting ready for the costume ball at Cranleigh Manor, and someone takes his place wearing the clown costume, "Attacking" Ann, and killing a servant who tries to help her...
All in all, one of my favourite Davison stories, and one you can watch and just enjoy.

Hannah Montana, Vol. 1 - Livin' the Rock Star Life (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I have been on this earth for thirty-one years and I'm proud to say that I like "Hannah Montana." My daughter is totally captivated by this series and by young Miley Cyrus, who heads up the cast of the show. We already own "Pop Star Profile" and my daughter (and me) watch the series on the Disney Channel together. The show is funny, light, girlishly silly at times and one of the safest shows for youngsters and pre-teens around. Don't let the "safest" comment scare you. This show is full of smart laughs for kids and in-jokes for their parents who know where Miley's dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, came from.
This particular DVD contains four episodes of the series. They are "Money For Nothing, Guilt For Free," "Lilly, Do You Want To Know A Secret," "Miley Get Your Gum," and "I Can't Make You Love Hannah If You Don't." These particular shows revolve around Miley going to great lengths to keep (and in a couple of cases, revealing) her secret life as pop star, Hannah Montana. Fans of "High School Musical" will recognize Corbin Bleu as a reluctant fan of Montana in one episode.
I have to agree with another reviewer that this show's characters have great chemistry on the tube. Cyrus, Emily Osment (Lilly), and Mitchel Musso (Oliver) are believable as best friends. Jason Earles is terribly terrific as Miley's goofy brother, Jackson. The elder Cyrus does his part as well playing a father who thinks he's a lot cooler than he actually is and tries to deal with his daughter growing up.
The extras on the disc are okay. There's a music video for "Best Of Both Worlds," Miley talking about gaining the role of Hannah and following her dreams, and her audition tapes.
Overall, this entire series is perfect for youngsters to watch. Hannah can be silly at times and she even makes some bad choices, but in the end, she suffers the consequences and deals with her problems like a fairly normal pre-teen. She and all of the other kids in the show seem pretty grounded, don't expect everything handed to them, don't dress or act like sluts, and are all-around decent kids. That's rare on TV these days, even in most "family" shows.
In a world where hotel heiresses who proclaim, "That's hot," are applauded for their social status, it's nice to see that a few young ladies still know how to act like real young ladies.
Highly recommended.

Barry Manilow - The First Television Specials (2007) Review

I have always been a huge Barry Manilow Fan, so when I heard they were going to release this box set with Barry's first 5 television specials, I had to have it!!! I already had the first special, 1st on VHS and then when it came out on DVD I sold the VHS tape on eBay. I love these specials, I was especially excited about having the Swing Street special and the One Voice specials. These are my favorites and bring back a lot of fond memories. The only problem I have with this box set...is that it is too hard to get the discs out of the case. It took me 10 minutes to get the second disc out of the case...I had to keep working and twisting it and finally got it out...AND IT NOW HAS A SMALL CRACK in the center, so if you get this be careful...very careful when trying to remove the discs. Other than this one problem, these specials speak for themselves. The music is incredibly timeless. You will really be glad you purchased this set!
