Bee Gees - Live by Request (2001) Review

Bee Gees - Live by Request (2001)
Average Reviews:

Recording with an audience of less than 1,000, this DVD feels like a club recording with it's Dolby Ditigal and DTS audio sound. Host Mark McEwen gushes a tad much and the 'Live by Request' gimmick is not original. Still, it manages to captivate. Fifteen songs (one a medley of eight), five being from the last album, it's a collection that defies the ear with the groups tight instrumentals and harmonies. "She Keep On Coming" and "You Should Be Dancing" rock the house, while "Sacred Trust" and "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" lull the audience into a trance. This recording is unique in that there are plenty of star 'call-ins' and lots of joking around. Its surprising to hear Barry sing, "Woman In Love", but "Nights On Broadway" is, once again, cut far too short for a song that contains some of their best work.
This is as close as a great live recording gets and a DVD well worth owning. "One Night Only" is a great live recording as well, but nothing matches the intimacy of this presentation.

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Off the Map (2001) Review

Red Hot Chili Peppers - Off the Map (2001)
Average Reviews:

I wasn't sure what to expect from a RHCP's live performance with John Frusciante back in the lineup. By far my favorite guitar player they've had, I didn't know if he could still play after his drug abuse problems in the years away from the band. Their "Californication" did little to alleviate those fears, his playing and soloing being so sparse and sort of un-practiced sounding. Don't get me wrong. "Californication" is a great album but it's much different from the chops galore "Blood Sugar Sex Magic". (And I don't mean that as a slam-BSSM is a masterwork in no small part due to Frusciante's intricate, interweaving lines throughout).
"Off the Map" put all my doubts to bed. Frusciante plays his [behind] off. Just check out "If You Have to Ask". Shredding, but he's so much more than than just a shredder. Something magical happens when his Strat, through a Wah, hits a Marshall. It's the tone for sure and then his note selection and use of space that really sets him apart from "shredders". I had read recently in a guitar magazine interview that he's trying to change his style, henceforth the new, sparse approach he's used on the last two albums. It's pretty funny to watch actually. When they play the new songs his playing shifts dramatically to the new style he's developing.
And don't let me forget Chad Smith and Flea. They are powerhouses here. Flea's gone from slapmaster (oh, he can still slap!) to improvisor and it suits him well. Chad is like a rock holding John and Flea's improvisations together.
This is a fun and inspiring dvd. The only reason I don't give it a 5 star review is because it does falter here and there. But that's what you get when your live show isn't prerecorded canned [stuff] and you take musical risks. That where the fun happens with these guys.

Off the Map is the first concert home video since 1991 from one of rock's greatest live experiences, the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Off the Map is also the band's first concert DVD--the only way to witness the funk-funk-rockmetal-rap musical orgy of one of today's most popular bands. Songs: Around The World, Give It Away, Usually Just a T-Shirt #3, Scar Tissue, Suck My Kiss, If You Have to Ask, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Otherside, Blackeyed Blonde, Pea, Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Easily, What Is Soul?, Fire, Californication, Right On Time, Under The Bridge, Me And My Friends.

Two and a Half Men: The Complete Fifth Season I was skeptical that the show could find fresh material but WOW. Funny stuff that will have you crying with laughter.

Televisions #1 comedy celebrates five seasons of funny with big laughs and hilarious new storylines. Charlie (Charlie Sheen) tops the charts as kiddie-song sensation Charlie Waffles. Alan (Jon Cryer) at last meets the perfect woman who just happens to be dating Charlie. Jake (Angus T. Jones) starts junior high, armed with reams of "helpful" advice from Alan and Charlie. Evelyn (Holland Taylor) ties the knot for the fifth time (lots of guests at the wedding, lots of cops at the reception). And as always, Berta (Conchata Ferrell) deals with it all by dealing out a royal flush of deadpan zingers. The guys are in and the welcome mat is out at everyones favorite Malibu beach house. Have a great time!

I received this on Thursday and was so excited to get it. I have always been a huge Barry Manilow Fan, so when I heard they were going to release this box set with Barry's first 5 television specials, I had to have it!!! I already had the first special, 1st on VHS and then when it came out on DVD I sold the VHS tape on eBay. I love these specials, I was especially excited about having the Swing Street special and the One Voice specials. These are my favorites and bring back a lot of fond memories. The only problem I have with this box set...is that it is too hard to get the discs out of the case. It took me 10 minutes to get the second disc out of the case...I had to keep working and twisting it and finally got it out...AND IT NOW HAS A SMALL CRACK in the center, so if you get this be careful...very careful when trying to remove the discs. Other than this one problem, these specials speak for themselves. The music is incredibly timeless. You will really be glad you purchased this set!

Before there was MTV, there was Manilow TV, and now BARRY MANILOW: THE FIRST TELEVISION SPECIALS DVD box set gathers together five of Manilow's early network television specials from 1977 to 1988, over a decade in the career of one of music's most enduring artists. Taken as a group, these outstanding shows didn't simply win Emmy's and score big ratings, but they also beautifully showcase the man's remarkable range as a musician, entertainer and creative force. Manilow is joined by special guests ranging from Ray Charles, to John Denver, and Dionne Warwick to Kid Creole and the Coconuts, yet in the end there is no doubt who the true star of these shows is. Turn on BARRY MANILOW: THE FIRST TELEVISION SPECIALS and get the feeling all over again. Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus (2004) Review

Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This film was originally shown on the Hallmark channel in 2004 and I know it is being repeated this year. It's a sappy charmer but the best Christmas movies tend to be sappy charmers anyway and this one does a very good job. The movie stars Steve Guttenberg who had really kind of disappeared for a few years but seems to be making a but of a comeback even if it's not in A features.
Guttenberg is Nick, the son of Santa Claus. His dad is retiring and Nick is going to take over the job but before he can he has to find a Mrs. Claus. Now obviously this is same plot used in the Santa Clause 2 so while it's not terribly original, it's pulled off well for a TV movie. Anyway he heads to Southern California where he eventually meets Beth played by Crystal Bernard. He of coruse has to win Beth over and convince her to believe in Santa. Beth is a hard-working career woman, widower, and mother who has a son named Jake. She works for an ad agency and Nick actually plays Santa in commercials that the company does. Well of course you know how the film turns out, right?
Guttenberg is always a likable guy and brings a regular guy charm to his roles. Bernard is equally likable, always playing the nice girl. It's a good family picture. Hallmark had made a sequel called "Meet the Santas" which should be popping up any day now. As they say...check your listings!

Tales of the Unexpected, Set 3 (2005) Review

Tales of the Unexpected, Set 3 (2005)
Average Reviews:

Accomplishing the "twenty spine chilling tales", an Australian-produced five-DVD set presents, according to producers, a cream de la cream of the Dahl's stories-tragic, deceptive, ambiguous events depicted by a strongly hilarious way.
It is good for watching in-between something more educative and mind-broadening.

From the master storyteller who brought the kids such surreal goodies as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, here’s a twisted treat for the grown-ups. Roald Dahl’s playfully macabre adult stories launched this legendary British television series, which continues with stories of the same creepy ilk. Mixing dark humor with horror and fantasy, the tales are tasty tidbits of the macabre, each building up to a startling final twist. A little bit Hitchcock, a little bit Twilight Zone, and wickedly entertaining. Episode casts feature top-drawer talent, including John Mills, Leslie Caron, Derek Jacobi, Susan Penhaligon, Shiela Gish, Phoebe Nicholls, Ian Holm, and Cherie Lunghi.

Smoke Jumper (2008) Review

Smoke Jumper (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
After proving that she's as strong as any man, scrawny 128 lb., former firefighter Kristin Scott (Burns) gets hired as a smoke jumper. The acting is mediocre at best. The film is mildly entertaining. Scott is at odds with her sister, who holds Scott responsible for their father's death. As soon as the sister announced her plans for going on a camping trip in the woods, I knew exactly what was going to happen. You will too. The plot is predictable. So is the syrupy-sweet ending.
If you're in the mood for a mild movie-of-the-week type flick that takes no thought or concentration, go for it. Otherwise don't bother. It's like eating soup when you really want meat and potatoes.

Martin - The Complete Fifth Season is the final season of this '90s hit show. It's pretty sad this funny sitcom only lasted five little seasons. Tisha Campbell is rarely seen, she had issues with Lawrence and would only finish the finale if Martin agreed to keep his distance from her. This season is bittersweet, they are still some hilarious moments but the cast who had excellent chemistry the first 4 seasons is now gone and you can feel it. I highly recommend purchasing this groundbreaking show, good memories!
