Forgotten (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)What makes this British television film so strong is a combination of the acting and the emphasis on family. Especially noteworthy is Amanda Burton as Rachel Monro, the woman who enters the family life of Ben and Nattie Turner to show both of them that the past cannot be escaped.
While the preservation in DVD format of the original film's three parts is a bit annoying--rather than following the entire story straight through--the strength of the film makes up for this quite a bit. So even though you have to view Part I, then go back to the menu and view Part II, then Part III, it's worth it. The plotting is strong, the pacing is well thought out, and, as mentioned, the acting does quite a bit to carry the tale.
A little girl is missing, and finally found dead. A young couple, with a 7-year old daughter, becomes involved, thanks to the attentions of the mysterious Rachel Monro. Soon the entire small village is aware of the supposed guilt of the husband, played well by Paul McGann. But things are not as straightforward as they may seem: complicating the picture are a corrupt retired cop; another policeman, bitter due to a failing marriage; and Rachel Monro herself.
The revelation of the killer is not completely surprising, if you pay close attention. What is surprising is that over the course of 2 1/2 hours, this holds up so well. Most of the lead and primary supporting characters have families--their family bonds are critical to them, and to the tone and context of the film.
This is a good movie to see on a rainy Sunday afternoon, or on a long cold night when the nearby fire is warm enough to keep you where you are for a while.

Dot.Kill (2005) Review

The killer shows us the deaths live via the internet, and Daines is out to get him.
And thus this is the whole plot of the movie.
This movie would fall under the catagory of a norish thriller. A few grainy depections of the murders shown over internet nothing substainal.
If you enjoy a cop thriller movie then I would say give it a look. I wouldn't say this was a must have to add to your collection, however it kept my attention and the story line was ok. You could pretty much guess what was going to happen, so there were no real surprises.
If this is the type of movie you think you might enjoy, I would suggest borrowing it from someone who has this on DVD, before renting or purchasing for yourself. Save your $.

Ghost Boat (2007) Review

I had thrown the book away and then was able to find it again, even though it was out of print, and read it again in 2002. This movie pretty much follows the book and in some ways goes beyond the book. This movie was done as a mini-series but it was put together great.

Cruel World (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)When I bought this movie I had never heard of it. I'm not sure if this even came out in theaters or not, but since it's only $10 I figured why not. This movie is mostly lame. There are some good moments. Edward Furlong's acting is pretty good and sadistic.
There are absolutely no bonus features at all. The only menu is a pop up menu to use while the movie is playing. Still it's not so bad for the low $10 price tag.

Ghost Writer (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)As the blurb states, there is no such thing as over-the-top in this feature -- it IS over-the-top, and the result of Cumming's writing/directing is one of the most enjoyable, albeit quite ghoulish, arthouse films I've ever seen.
The movie centers around John Vandermark, a strange, angry and rather dislikeable man who has an admitted weakness for very handsome struggling young male artists. Enter Sebastian St. Germaine, a gorgeous author who is currently taking advantage of Vandermark's "charity" by staying in Vandermark's house, eating his meals, and ignoring his thinly veiled sexual advances.
The movie takes off from there in an explosion of fury and extremely dark comedy, blood and hysteria. David Boreanaz plays Sebastian to perfection as a dark, angry man who is also rather abusive and egotistic, and his performance as the young man (who is eventually murdered in a scene of gruesome macabre that is too memorable to go into detail here; you'd have to see it to believe it) is one of his best to date.
However, Alan Cumming's performance as John Vandermark is really the one that will stick with you. It's like watching a lunatic running through a hallway of funhouse mirrors; constantly shifting in a dizzying whirl. He cries and whines, he screams and tortures, he laughs and breaks into hysterics. His performance is pitch-perfect and his directing is, while not groundbreaking, definitely something different to see.
This movie is incredibly artistic and feeling, probing into the darkness of obsession and the explosions of passion therein with devastating effect. There aren't really any light moments throughout the film; but that only makes the overall theme of loss and obsession easier to maintain. Boreanaz and Cumming deliver amazing performances and make their characters really come to life, and they were the high points of this movie. However, memorable performances were also given by Anne Heche and of course Carrie Fisher.
I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys independant/arthouse films, but also to anyone who enjoys dark humor, the macabre, and the gore-splattered art. I was lucky enough to see this on a big screen, and I believe the DVD will not be lacking.
WARNINGS: This is a very dark film, and there is a scene of physical torture. The death scene is one of the most amazing in the movie and the shining point in particular of Boreanaz's acting performance, but it is very graphic and incredibly disturbing. Although this is not rated, be warned that there is blood, sex, and swearing, and nudity if my memory serves.
RECOMMENDATIONS: If you enjoyed this film, the extremely disturbing and highly enjoyable art film "Perfume: The Scent of a Murder" would also be highly recommended. Another David Boreanaz film with rather disturbing black humor subject matter that you may also enjoy would be the Canadian independant film "These Girls."

Primeval (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)When I rented primeval, I was expecting (and hoping) for a sci-fi channel type movie about a monster crocodile that would attack everyone. Well, it was partly like that. A group of journalists is sent to a civil war stricken South African country to report on the capture of this man eater.
The journalist meet a few local villagers and hook up with a crocodile expert. However, their lives are threatened by much more than just a crocodile when the cameraman accidentally films men from a local warlord's army executing a tribal holy man and his family.
The crocodile does play an important part in this movie; but I felt that it became more of a movie about the Burundi civil war; its war lords; and a general statement about ravaged Africa as a whole. Some people, I have read, did not like this movie. I think its worth a try, I certainly enjoyed it.
By the way, Gustave (the killer crocodile) is indeed real. He lives in Burundi and may be the largest freshwater crocodile in the world. I Googled "Gustave crocodile in Africa" and got a BBC News link from a 2002 article. Interesting.

Rosario Tijeras (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I enjoyed *Rosario Tijeras*. It wasn't a great film but it is worth watching.
The movie opens with Antonio bringing Rosario into an emergency room. Both are covered in blood. While Rosario is taken into surgery, Antonio takes a stroll down memory lane to where he first meets Rosario.
Antonio and his friend, Emilio, meets Rosario at a trendy bar. Emilio and Rosario immediately hooks up. Rosario is a sexy, fascinating and mysterious woman.
Throughout the movie, you're not sure if Rosario is doing assignments for someone else or if she's the head honcho. Antonio later tells her about these rumors he's heard about her. Even Antonio isn't sure. Rosario just laughs it off.
What's interesting about this movie is that the first half, she's in control. However, once her friend/"brother"/mentor/caretaker, JonHefe was killed, she seems to lose control of everything.
Meanwhile, Antonio is in love with Rosario. However, he doesnt' want to come between her and his childhood friend, Emilio. Plus, he feels obligated to look after her after her brother made him promise to do so.
I enjoyed the cinematic scenes throughout the film. However, what I wasn't too crazy about was the stereotypical portrayal of Latinos as gun-toting and revengeful. Ah well, I guess there are small rings of truth in stereotypes.
Overall, good movie. In fact, probably one of the best Latin action films that I've seen in recent years.

The Audrey Hepburn Story (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Frankly, I came to this film expecting to find fault and to be a detractor. After all, how could someone have the temerity to attempt to portray Audrey Hepburn, one of the ethereal luminaries of the screen. I fell in love with Audrey Hepburn when I was 12 years old and saw her in Sabrina in 1954; I remained in love with her for the rest of her life. Consequently, I doubted that any mere mortal could do justice to this role, especially Jennifer Love Hewitt, who had not be known for major dramatic performances. However, I must concede that I was pleasantly surprised.
The performance was quite convincing and believable. Hewitt had Audrey Hepburn's voice and a number of her mannerisms down quite well, and also conveyed some of the fragility of her personality. On balance, I found the film quite satisfying and enjoyable.

The Stepfather (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Having always been a fan of the original film, I was curious to see this remake, even though I expected the worst. While this is an OK watch for thriller fans, it is inferior to the original in every way. In fact the original is more intense, more graphic and just more fun! This film looked and felt like a Lifetime TV movie especially with Ward playing the new wife in this tame and pointless remake.
If you looking to watch a film about a psychotic Stepfather, skip the watered down remake and look for the original, which has finally gotten a long over due DVD release this past year, no doubt because of the remake, so I guess the remake did serve a purpose after all.

Spy Game (Widescreen Edition) (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)'Spy game' is a simple spy story with terrific performances by its lead actors - Robert Redford and Brad Pitt. Pitt plays CIA agent Tom Bishop, who is found, hired and trained by Nathan, played by Robert Redford. Tom Bishop's personal mission in China goes haywire and he is taken captive by the Chinese. And then it is all upto Redford to rescue him. How Redford does it is the rest of the plot, which alternates between the present and the past, as narrated by Redford.
Redford plays Nathan effortlessly, with charm and ease. He leaves most of the action sequences to the younger actor and that is a wise thing, considering his age. Yet again, Pitt proves that he has the acting talent to go with his looks. The scenes where Pitt and Redford appear together are nicely written and acted.
The only negative points in the film are the background music, which is jarring at times, and the slightly dragging middle part, but it does build up the tempo for the finale. These defects are more than compensated by Redford and Pitt and this is one film that is worth watching.

Unbreakable (Two-Disc Vista Series) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)These days any film associated with comics is likely to be a special effects extravaganza full of action and short on character development. Well director M. Night Shyamalan has taken us in a different direction, (no surprise there). His film, "Unbreakable", explores the action comic philosophy without becoming an action comic itself. You won't see men in spandex leaping from tall buildings to save the day. What you will see is a thoughtful investigation of the unusual skills we humans may or may not have, and the choices we make regarding their use.
I have a talent for putting holes in T-shirts. My sister can permanently stop any watch she wears for a few weeks. It's hard to see either of us becoming crime fighters or maniacal masterminds on the strength of these talents but it does makes you think. Let's stretch our imaginations a little further. What if a man had the uncanny luck to avoid virtually all injury or illness? Could this be significant? Would he even notice? Where would it lead him?
Unbreakable introduces us to such a man. Bruce Willis plays David Dunn, the sole survivor of a tragic train derailment that killed the other 131 passengers. David walks away without a scratch and barely notices his fifteen minutes of fame on the local news channels. But at least one other person takes note of David's uncanny good fortune. Elijah Price is an art dealer, played convincingly by Samuel L Jackson. His gallery specializes in comic art and he is very passionate about the seriousness of his chosen profession and it's medium.
Elijah believes that action comics represent an ancient wisdom, exaggerated and commercialized but still containing an essence of truth. His theory is that there are people with extraordinary abilities and that these people have a destiny. Whether these people become legendary hero's or any other larger than life figure depends on them realizing their destiny and fulfilling their potential. In David Dunn, he suspects lies the heart of a hero and Elijah's obsession soon drags David and his family into a new world.
Shyamalan takes his time with this story. It could have very easily been boring, because when boiled down, little actually happens. However, Unbreakable avoids that trap and becomes instead, a strange mixture of longing, suspense and doubt. We truly get to know David's wife Audrey and his son Joseph. They are not an atypical family; marital problems, boredom and some other dysfunctions feature at the start of the story. In a way, David's gradually more serious attempts to explore his "gift" become the catalyst to improve his home life.
The sub-plot of David's crumbling relationship with Audrey, (Robin Wright), is not fully explored but we are given several clues that make it interesting. David is chasing job offers in another city, even after the accident little emotion passes between he and Audrey, and they sleep separately. All of which points to a lack of love. But to counter this we discover that David sacrificed a promising football career to capture Audrey's heart and, even in the hardest times, he has remained faithful to her. I like these quiet story lines, where nothing is forced down your throat and you have to work it out on your own.
By far the most interesting character is Elijah. Born with a brittle bone disease, his life has been crowded with pain, torment and ostracism. At school he was taunted with the moniker, "Mr. Glass", and to an extent he has embraced this title. If you look closely, you will see that he is always close to glass, for example, his fragile glass walking stick. Elijah is a fighter. His mother headed off a life of seclusion when he was a depressed boy and convinced him to accept life's challenges, eventually leading to his becoming a professional success. Elijah's passion and conviction are magnetic. He not only draws David and his son into the world of duty/destiny but the audience is forced to believe, long before David starts to.
Unbreakable is a subtle film about taking risks, acknowledging hope and following dreams. Whether we have special gifts or not, it challenges us to take a look around and try to find opportunities to make a difference; to stand up to the small and large evils in this world and do our part. I can only hope we see more of these inspiring characters in future films. I want to feel this way again.

Traffic - The Miniseries (The Director's Cut) (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)The original version was done by the Brits in 1990. Titled "Traffik" - it concerned the herion trade from Pakistan and its impact on life in Great Britain. It's a fascinating story with major characters in three distinct locations: Britian, Hamburg, and Pakistan. The characters of these three story-arcs interconnect and intertwine as the devastation of drug use and the futility of the drug war are laid bare.
If the story seems familiar, Steven Soderbergh retold it in his feature film "Traffic" in 1991. While shifting the locale to America, changing the drug to crack/cocaine and moving the source to Mexico, Soderbergh's version retains the essential elements of the British original:
A high ranking gov't official charged with fighting illegal drugs, his struggle as the problem hits close to home, the upscale wife of an arrested major drug dealer who steps into the drug trade to maintain her family's lifestyle, the local cops doing their best in the drug war, and the locals of the third world country - the source of the drugs - caught up in the dangerous business in their efforts to merely survive.
Now, 13 years later, USA network has updated the story yet again for the post-9/11 world. And a magnificent job they have done. While Soderbergh was content to do a straight remake, this newest version resets and recasts the characters and locations while only retaining the basic bullet-points of the plot. As dark, moody, and despairing as the original, the newest "Traffic" hits the mark.
I watched it as it ran on USA some months back and decided it would be a "must-buy" when it came out on DVD. To see that we will be getting a "director's cut" - well, that's just icing on an already delicious cake.
If your tastes run toward the gritty crime genre - Homicide:LotS / The Wire / French Connection / Prime Suspect - and you don't mind a little pessimism in your entertainment - you definitely want this latest telling of a story of our time.

(More customer reviews)I don't want to write too much because I don't want to spoil the surprises for the spectators, but I highly recommend this movie if you like an atmospheric, spooky, intelligent, highly suspenseful, involving, beautifully crafted, acted movie with a story that will leave you quite amazed, satisfied, and wanting to see it again. Trust me, this is not your typical ghost story. Spanish director Amenabar should get the Oscar for this thrilling thriller. It's beautiful and even moving. I was not expecting to see a film in the same vein as The Sixth Sense that's better than The Sixth Sense. To use a Hollywood equation it's The Sixth Sense meets Turn of the Screw. Nicole Kidman is awesome. The rest of the cast is superb. The fog-drenched cinematography adds the right touch of mystery and horror. And get ready for one of the scariest quick-cuts in movie history when you least expect it! Have fun!

Time Between Dog and Wolf (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I'm surprised this show doesn't have more reviews. It is by far one of my favorites. Not just a favorite of Korean shows, but any TV show I've ever watched. The story was excellent and well developed. I never felt like the story was lagging or things were being drawn out too much. It isn't like most of the Korean shows out there. This show does have romance, but it isn't the main focus of the story. Rather the main focus is on a man seeking revenge for his mother's murder.
I bought this show on a whim at my local Borders. After reading the description I thought it sounded like it would be good. If not, I figured I could sit through for nothing else than to watch Lee Jun Ki. I ended up finishing the entire show over one weekend because I simply couldn't stop watching it. When one episode ended I kept going because I wanted so badly to know what would happen next.
One of the nice things about this show is that it isn't as predictable as a lot of shows. Several things happened that I didn't expect.
I highly recommend this show. There's lots of action as well as some romance thrown in.

It's known as the Time Between Dog & Wolf - the time when daylight slowly turns to nightfall, vision and reality blur, and the line between friend and foe becomes unclear. Mary Higgins Clark: Pretend You Don't (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)The pattern of the previous films of this series by Ms Clark is partly broken. The main character is not a radio anchorwoman but a female real estate agent. We are not dealing here with a serial killer but with a real hit man hired by a dirty soiled trafficker who appears slightly ambiguous because his secular but not criminal boss, who he cheats, is Italian, or has some kind of an Italian name. But it does not have anything to do with the mafia. The whole business is a cover up operation for a first murder that the police sloppily classified as being an accident. There the pattern is not broken. The police is still sloppy. What's more the police does not succeed where a simple woman, by taking risks and using her intelligence, baits the hit man and the rotten egg out of the basket in which they were hiding. The suspense is OK though of course we know from the very start what the stakes are and we are only missing the name of the man who is ordering these murders. The police will arrive just on time when it is needed not to get into more complicated business. And yet the whole film is built around a leak in the police protection of the main character and we will never know how this leak happened and where it came from. The police is always sloppy with Ms Clark, but Ms Clark is also sloppy on some basic logical elements.
