Rose Red (2pc) (2002) Review

Rose Red (2pc) (2002)

Sometimes I am blithely unobservant. Arriving at the decision to see Rose Red based on one of those AI recommendation machines, I never noticed that it was 1) by Stephen King, and 2) the four hour version of a television special. In retrospect, I'm really not sure why I decided to see it, since haunted house horror movies generally don't grab me. But I did, and after a moment of shocked realization discovered that I was having fun watching it.
The story isn't anything spectacularly original. Joyce Reardon (Nancy Travis), a parapsychology teacher, bets her entire career on the possibility of finding measurable psychic phenomena at an eerie old mansion (Rose Red) in the heart of Seattle. Said mansion has a long history of eating people, and Reardon's plan is to invite a selection of psychics to spend a weekend at the house in order to wake it from a dormant state. Her ace in the hole is Annie Wheaton (Kimberly Brown), an autistic 15 year old who is an industrial strength tele-everything.
Sure enough, the house wakes up, fingers get lopped off, people drown, and a whole host of equally nasty things start to happen. As the mysteries about the house begin to unravel, things get even worse and it becomes clear that Rose Red has no intention of letting anyone go. From that point on it is a pure battle for survival.
The house is the real star of the film. It is huge, full of weird rooms and interconnected hallways, and has a knack for rebuilding and changing itself. CBS went all out to make it a spooky masterpiece, and they did a good job of it. It's the kind of nightmare that you really would like to visit. Think of it as a haunted theme park and you have the atmosphere.
Acting varies, but is generally decent. I'm not sure about Nancy Travis though. She makes Joyce on of those sublimely irritating characters that you start out sympathizing with and wind up hoping she gets his with an axe. No such luck. Julian Sands and Matt Ross are brilliant and everyone else has moments of greatness.
So I likes the show after all. Since it's made for TV, don't expect a lot of gore or out and out violence. The film starts a bit slowly, but the upside of that is that king spends as much time on character development as he does on plot twists. While this isn't a masterpiece, it's worth watching on a lazy Saturday afternoon with buckets of popcorn.

The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2001) Review

The Others (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) (2001)

I don't want to write too much because I don't want to spoil the surprises for the spectators, but I highly recommend this movie if you like an atmospheric, spooky, intelligent, highly suspenseful, involving, beautifully crafted, acted movie with a story that will leave you quite amazed, satisfied, and wanting to see it again. Trust me, this is not your typical ghost story. Spanish director Amenabar should get the Oscar for this thrilling thriller. It's beautiful and even moving. I was not expecting to see a film in the same vein as The Sixth Sense that's better than The Sixth Sense. To use a Hollywood equation it's The Sixth Sense meets Turn of the Screw. Nicole Kidman is awesome. The rest of the cast is superb. The fog-drenched cinematography adds the right touch of mystery and horror. And get ready for one of the scariest quick-cuts in movie history when you least expect it! Have fun!

Screen sensation Nicole Kidman (MOULIN ROUGE, EYES WIDE SHUT) delivers an utterly unforgettable performance in this scary and stylish suspense thriller. While awaiting her husband's return from war, Grace (Kidman) and her two young children live an unusually isolated existence behind the locked doors and drawn curtains of a secluded island mansion. Then, after three mysterious servants arrive and it becomes chillingly clear that there is far more to his house than can be seen, Grace finds herself in a harrying fight to save her children and keep her sanity. Acclaimed by critics everywhere, the unpredictable twists and turns of this compelling hit will keep you guessing as it keeps you riveted to the edge of your seat!

A Haunting Season 4 (2008) Review

A Haunting Season 4 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Haunting is a documentary series that explores allegedly true tales of hauntings, ghosts and the supernatural. Each show is composed of high quality, atmospheric reenactments following the descriptions of eyewitnesses. Superimposed on the action is the creepy, measured voice of a narrator who sets the mood and explains the events. The show is exceptionally effective. Most episodes have at least some unnerving moments and some are downright scary.
Season 4 of A Haunting should continue to appeal to fans. While many of the episodes in Season 4 are interesting, most are not as scary as those from previous seasons. In fact, some episodes can only be described as odd (e.g., Spellbound) and do not focus on a specific haunting. Some shows are excellent and dedicated viewers will still find plenty to enjoy. However, I would recommend that new viewers start with earlier seasons.
Below is a short description of each episode in Season 4. The number in parentheses is my "scariness rating"; scale = 1-5 with 5 being the scariest. Minor spoilers throughout.
Dark Wrath - A demon stalks the halls and terrifies the owners of a rural house near St. Louis (3)
The Awakening - Restless ghosts trouble a Midwestern couple (2)
The Calling - She sees dead people. A young mother is traumatized when her ability to see and interact with the deceased becomes impossible to control (2)
The Apartment - A young Seattle couple are harassed by paranormal visitors when they move into an apartment where a vicious drug battle once took place (1)
Spirits of the Dead - A spooky horse barn is the center of otherworldly events as a dispossessed spirit attempts to control a assemblage of ghosts (2)
Where Evil Lurks - A complex haunting takes place in the Ozarks where a daemon that was summoned in a historically haunted house viciously attacks a young family (4)
Spellbound - Not a typical A Haunting episode. It mainly deals with the relationship between a son who becomes a devote Christian (and eventually a minister) and his mother who practices Wicca (1)
Echoes of the Past - A family moves into an ancient Vermont home where various spirits, mainly those of two little girls, interact with them (1)
Ghost Hunter - The 15 year old son of a ghost hunter becomes possessed while helping her paranormal research team investigate an old cemetery (1)
Stalked by Evil - A spirit that lurks in the closet of a Texas home becomes obsessed with the teenage daughter of the new residents (3)
Casa de los Muertos - A Latino guitarist and family move into an Arizona house haunted by the spirit of a white supremacist (1)
Monster in the Apartment - A young man who dabbles in the occult eventually becomes possessed by a demon and begins to stalk his female roommate (2)
Legend Trippers - Legend trippers are people who visit allegedly haunted sites to investigate paranormal activity. In this episode, several groups of teenagers explore an ancient, creepy Wisconsin cemetery (3)

Season 3 of A Haunting continues to provide well made documentaries of paranormal experiences and investigations. The episodes are just as good, and in some cases better, than those from Seasons 1 & 2. A Haunting is a documentary series that explores allegedly true tales of hauntings, ghosts and the paranormal. Each show is composed of high quality atmospheric reenactments that follow descriptions of eyewitnesses. Superimposed on the action is the creepy, measured voice of a narrator who sets the mood and explains the events. The show is exceptionally effective. Most episodes have at least some unnerving moments and some are downright scary. Viewers interested in the paranormal should love this series as should people who like horror movies.
Below is a short description of each episode in Season 3. The number in parentheses is my "scariness rating"; scale = 1-5 with 5 being the scariest. Minor spoilers throughout.
Fear House - Two separate families independently experience terrifying events in a Missouri house that seems to be able to identify and attack a persons deepest fears (3)
The Attic - Several entities, one good, one harmful, torment a Michigan family when they move into a new home (1)
Hidden Terror - Mysterious ghosts scare a young couple and their friend away from a house in upstate New York (2)
The Unleashed - A young Michigan man unwisely dabbles in black magic over the site of an Indian burial ground and releases demons that psychologically attack him and his family (2)
A Haunting in Ireland - The arrival of a new baby into an Irish household triggers extreme poltergeist activity (3)
The Forgotten - When a young family moves into a one hundred year old home in Salt Lake City, they discover a sinister hidden room where an evil entity dwells (4)

The Possessed - The paranormal investigation of a Virginia barn used for satanic rituals goes awry when the lead investigator becomes possessed by a demonic entity (3)
The Presence - A dysfunctional family is the target of paranormal attack when they move into a northern California house where a demon was unleashed by Black Mass (4)
The Dark Side - An exceptionally creepy New England house is the site of recurrent paranormal events; when a young couple buys the property they discover that the current residents have nailed all of the upstairs doors closed (4)
