Beyond Reality - The First Season (2006) Review

Beyond Reality - The First Season (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
BEYOND REALITY appeared on the USA cable network for two seasons. Forty-four half-hour episodes aired between 10/1/91 and 3/1/93. The show centered on two university-based parapsychologists, portrayed by Shari Belafonte (as Laura Wingate) and Carl Marotte (as J.J. Stillman) and their explorations of poltergeists, telekinesis and other such eerie phenomena. Also appearing infrequently was Nicole de Boer (as Celia Powell).
MCE's DVD set of BEYOND REALITY contains all 20 Season #1 episodes plus two from the second season. They probably did this to evenly divide this program's catalog into lots of 22, but short of consulting J.J and Laura, we can't know for certain if a Season #2 collection is in the foreseeable future.THE RAY BRADBURY THEATER - Complete Series consists of 65 episodes-- all based on show host Bradbury's short stories. It's a little-seen and fascinating 1980's anthology of sci-fi and fantasy that featured such fine actors as William Shatner, Jeff Goldblum, Leslie Nielson and Peter O'Toole. The "Beyond Reality" Season #1 list is sequential by original airdate.
Also included are episode titles and featured guest stars.
Mirror, Mirror (10/4/91) - Lynne Cormack/Nicole de Boer/Peter Dvorsky
The Doppelgänger (10/11/91) - Len Doncheff/Kenneth Walsh

4 segments- England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales
Each travels to the location- discusses the apparitions- AND covers the history of why they're thought to be there.
You get the beauty of fantastic castles AND the fascinating history of the events thought to cause the disturbances.
It's bloody good fun for everyone. In my opinion, it's hands down the most entertaining "ghost" documentary out there and would be fantastic for anyone looking to build up the atmosphere with a different episode each night approaching Halloween.

This program investigates the myths of ghosts associated with various castles throughout the British Isles. Through the use of eerie reenactments shot on location and dramatic narrative our audience will come face to face with ghosts and shudder at the wail of a banshee. Ireland, the land of saints and scholars, of poets and fairies, is also a country of legends and myths. Castle Ghosts of Ireland is a journey to this land rich in mystery and ancient lore, exploring the eerie halls of Leap Castle, Castle Leslie and Castle Matrix, where a history of the supernatural and an aura of mysticism abound. Scotland has a turbulent past, filled with bloody feuds, heroic deeds and dark treachery. Scottish castles bore witness to much of this violent history, and it is in the energies of Scotland's three most haunted castles, Glamis Castle, Duntrune Castle, and Fyvie Castle, that so many of the country's spirits live on. England is described as 'the isle of spirits', the most haunted place on earth. Castles investigated include Sudley Castle, Mucaster Castle, and the Tower of London. And the brooding castles of Wales are the setting for countless feuds, foul murders, and dastardly deeds. Today, lingering still in the mountains and the valleys are the tormented spirits of the victims, as Castle Ghosts of Wales takes us on a tour of these most haunted places.Narrated by Robert Hardy (Harry Potter's Minister of Magic Cornelius Fudge).

If ever there was a documentary about the Bermuda triangle, this would be it!From the beginning this documentary sets the tone for the rest of the hour plus. From the earliest reports of missing ships of old to missing planes of the present, this one covers it all.I must say I have a bias to this dvd as it really covered in depth the disappearance of flight 19.Every possible theory is covered and explained to great detail. The viewer will be able to follow it through to the end.I would highly recommended this dvd to anyone wanting to begin their exploration of all things un-explainable,hope that made sense!).

Usually, when I see "haunted places" stories, they are the standard, lame fare of other people telling stories and no actual footage of these people in the haunted places. No proof in other words. This video is different. When I first saw it, I was rather excited at the concept. A family spends the night in a haunted place using scientific tools to measure changes in atmosphere and temperature. I watched, eager to see how this was going to unfold. Not only was I kept hooked to this story, but it was truly frightening in many places. For example, there was a doll that was sweating on its own, a piano that played itself (it wasn't a trick or the kind that is made to play on its own), furniture that moved on its own, voices that came from nowhere and screams that were not made by the visitors or the crew. I highly recommend this video. You won't be dissapointed!

I love when the History Channel begins airing its stable of paranormal shows heavily around Halloween. This is a great bargain for five DVDs. "Vampire Secrets" is the excellent 2-hour program from 2006 (100 minutes), while the other four are hour long shows (50 minutes). This is worth it just for "Vampire Secrets" and "The Haunted History of Halloween." Either one of these two DVDs purchased separately cost as much as this entire set. The others in this series are quite good too...they include slightly older shows from the mid 90's about poltergeists, hauntings, etc. Some of which I don't remember seeing before. For the price, it is well worth it!

Ghost Hunters - The Complete First Season (2004) Review

Ghost Hunters - The Complete First Season (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ever wanted to hunt ghosts? Ever wanted to know how to fix that leaky faucet? Well, you're in luck if you pick up "Ghost Hunters: The Complete First Season." Stars Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, the plumbers-by-day/ghost-hunters by night, are two of the best guys on television these days. Why? For the simple fact that they, along with the rest of the members of TAPS, don't seem to be doing this reality series for their own profit, but for the profit of their clients and any and everyone who has ever been interested in hunting ghosts or other paranormal entities.
On this DVD set, you can follow Jason, Grant, Brian, Steve, and the rest of the TAPS(The Atlantic Paranormal Society) gang as they travel across the country in search of so-called haunted places. I tag them "so-called" because TAPS attempts to disprove that a haunting actually exists at each location. Sometimes they can prove it, other times they can't. In fact, most of the places they visit in season one turn up very little proof of actual hauntings. The few times that they do find evidence, it's usually pretty shocking.
Each episode covers cases where we get to see the ups and downs of investigating haunts. Sometimes Jason yells at Brian. Okay, MOST of the time, Jason yells at Brian. Other times, the group grabs some amazing footage. Every once in awhile, the group comes across something that they cannot disprove. Much of the time, they can dismiss "hauntings" as overactive imaginations, old, creaky houses, or just plain ol' dust.
What really grabbed me about TAPS is that they go into each investigation expecting to find nothing. Jason and Grant, and Andy as the series progressed, could often pick up on what was causing a "haunt" very quickly. When they couldn't place something, they were still very slow to use the "H" word.
The group works together in almost soap opera-like fashion. They gripe amongst themselves, they laugh, and they have a deep concern for each others safety as well as that of their many clients. They come off as very professional and very serious about their work.
We also get to look into the normal side of Jason and Grant's lives as Roto-Rooter plumbers. If you listen carefully, you can also nab a tip here and there about plumbing.
With EVPs, video evidence, and some great team members, Season One of "Ghost Hunters" is a great buy worthy of repeat viewings. There are a few deleted scenes and a paranormal dictionary included on the discs, but the really good stuff is the investigations. They are fun to watch and sometimes they will pick at your brain as you try to take in what you see, such as a chair moving by itself and a few other strange things. The DVD can be grainy at times, making dark scenes even darker, but overall this is a great collection to own. Also, there's a coupon good until the end of this year with which you can buy two TAPS shirts for the price of one. Who could ask for more?
Great job TAPS, this ain't your typical cemetary hopping ghost hunts. This is serious investigation with heart.
Highly recommended.

Ghost Hunters - Season 2, Part 1 (2004) Review

Ghost Hunters - Season 2, Part 1 (2004)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Big Vision, the company responsible for putting out "Ghost Hunters: Season 2, Parts 1 and 2" and "Ghost Hunters: Season 1," still have a long way to go with the production quality of their discs, but they definitely listen to their customers and attempt to make corrections. For starters, they've hulked up the DVD cases for Season 2, making it virtually impossible for the discs to become dislodged during shipping. This was a major complaint of many folks of Season 1's release. Secondly, the picture has gotten better. Granted, it's not perfect, and it's still too grainy during the investigations to see everything that's going on, but it has improved slightly. Finally, the audio is okay. As stated before, there is still plenty of space for changes and improvements, but Big Vision seems to be taking its customers advice to heart.
Now, on to Season 2, Part 1, in which we find Jason and Grant and the rest of the TAPS team seeking out more ghosts or lack thereof. This particular set includes one of my favorite cases: Myrtles Plantation. They also revisit Eastern State Penitentiary and tackle the Rolling Hills Asylum, the wacky Winchester House, and the U.S.S. North Carolina.
TAPS has always managed to impress me with their professionalism. Search any number of "ghost hunting" websites and you'll see that many of them are nothing more than a bunch of teen and college-aged kids hanging out in the graveyard or trespassing onto abandoned property. TAPS takes the paranormal very seriously. It almost takes an act of God to make them label a location as haunted. When they do, you can rest assured that they've done everything in their power to debunk a ghost's existence.
I highly recommend this DVD set, as well as Part 2 of Season 2 and the first season. You'll be impressed at how the TAPS team takes time to explain what an EMF detector is, what "orbs" are and probably aren't, and how something as simple as a mirror can play tricks on your mind.
Another great thing about this particular set is in the deleted scenes area where Brian is confronted by a woman and called a few derogatory terms. It's fun at the expense of Brian, but let's face it, Brian's just a funny guy.
"Dude, Run!!!"

I'm not sure what happened between the release of Season 4 and Season 5 of this show but someone thought it would be a great idea to make these dvd's not work in my dvd player. I have to watch them on my laptop if I want the dvd's to work. I have a TV with a built in dvd player and most of the time it works perfectly. But I noticed that it will not play or has a very hard time reading the Season 5 Ghost Hunters discs. Are they using a new format or something?
I love this show but I waited a long time before deciding to buy Season 5 part 2 because of the poor quality of the dvds. They should play in ANY player, not just SOME players. It makes me think that buying and downloading the digital version of Season 6 might be better than buying the dvds.
Also they did away with the "play it all" feature which ticks me off because I like to have uninterrupted GH marathons. I don't like to have to pause every 45 minutes to pick the next show. Really guys, what's going on!
Love the show, hate the new DVD format.

Ghost Whisperer - The Complete First Season (2005) Review

Ghost Whisperer - The Complete First Season (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, I will admit to watching this for the lovely Jennifer Love Hewitt, having followed her career since Party of Five and several movies of varying quality. And when I first read that she would be returning to television in a series with this story I was, to put it mildly, not encouraged. But I have to admit this is quite a good show. Yes, the concept is similar to NBC's Medium but crossed with CBS' Touched by an Angel. So yes, it's a little corny at times. It's probably aimed at an older demographic being on CBS. But that doesn't detract from it being rather good, in that "tell me a spooky story" mode like the old Twilight Zone shows were at times.
Jennifer plays Melinda Gordon, recently married, now a small business owner in the town of Grandview (state unknown, but aren't all TV small towns like that?) who has held a particular ability since childhood, the ability to communicate with the dead. She "sees" them and is sought out by them to help them make their final journeys into the afterlife. Or "crossover" as it's been termed. But before they can, they all have unfinished business with their loved ones. Usually, it's the circumstances behind their deaths that lead them to Melinda. So "the dead" range from an M.I.A. soldier wishing to tell his now grown son the details of his disappearance, to a wrongly executed artist, to a 9 year old boy trying to tell his mother his death was not her fault. Naturally those she encounters are all skeptical, even hostile at times. But even she admits it's not easy having this ability, at times she wishes she didn't have it.
With each episode we learn a little more about her and her abilities with the undead. Like the fact her own mother has the same abilities but has tried to suppress them all her life and has had to deal with the guilt that entails. And all this leads up to the first season finale when she must deal with the victims of a plane crash and the multiple "crossings" that must occur, and the sudden twist to this story that served as the first season cliffhanger.
So far, there's no details on extra features, if any, here. But I would hope we'll get some episode commentaries, particularly from the show's creator as well as Ms. Jennifer. She was featured on the commentary track for her film "Heartbreakers" and proved to be a great storyteller on that film. I'm sure she'd be just as informative on this series.
As I said, this show is a guilty pleasure for me. Jennifer is beautiful to look at here; she can play strong, yet vulnerable characters. If you're looking for paranormal crime solvers, you're probably meant for Medium. But if you'd like a Friday night show to chill out with and end your week with, check out Ghost Whisperer.

Ever since she was a young girl, Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) has been able to see and talk to dead people--earth bound spirits who have yet to cross over to the other side and who seek her help in communicating and resolving unfinished business with the living.Melinda sometimes has a hard time accepting her "gift," especially now that she's a newlywed and looking forward to starting her new life with her husband, Jim Clancy (David Conrad), a paramedic. Her friend and business partner in the antique store, Andrea Moreno (Aisha Tyler), is fascinated by Melinda's talent.Although Melinda embraces her unique "abilities" as a blessing and sometimes a curse, she always helps her clients--alive or dead--find emotional closure.

Unlike the other "Paranormal" shows out there, I still find TAPS to be the most credible of them all. The investigation at The Birdcage in Tombstone was awesome, and the USS Lexington episode was fantastic. But, to me, the investigation that involved the Manson Murders, and the tortured sounds of those EVPs really shook me, I have to admit.
That one stuck with me, and I would have to say that was the most gut and heart-wrenching of any episode of Ghost Hunters I've seen.
I write horror, and I don't shake easily, but remembering how beautiful Sharon Tate was and hearing those EVPs really got to me.
That has to be one of their best investigations yet.
EDIT:
When this review was written, the product information was not yet up. As the Manson episode was the last episode of Part One of Season Three, I assumed it would be on Part One of Season Three's DVD set. Apparently it is not.
But, Tombstone, The Stanley, and Nightmare Noises are, and they are definitely worth checking out.
GH has come to my town for Eastern State Penitentiary, I wish they would come back and do Fort Mifflin (a supposedly VERY active fort that was used in the Revolutionary War where hundreds died battling the British Navy as they pushed their way up the Delaware giving Washington time to regroup at Valley Forge, and later became a prison during the Civil War).

A Haunting Season 4 (2008) Review

A Haunting Season 4 (2008)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A Haunting is a documentary series that explores allegedly true tales of hauntings, ghosts and the supernatural. Each show is composed of high quality, atmospheric reenactments following the descriptions of eyewitnesses. Superimposed on the action is the creepy, measured voice of a narrator who sets the mood and explains the events. The show is exceptionally effective. Most episodes have at least some unnerving moments and some are downright scary.
Season 4 of A Haunting should continue to appeal to fans. While many of the episodes in Season 4 are interesting, most are not as scary as those from previous seasons. In fact, some episodes can only be described as odd (e.g., Spellbound) and do not focus on a specific haunting. Some shows are excellent and dedicated viewers will still find plenty to enjoy. However, I would recommend that new viewers start with earlier seasons.
Below is a short description of each episode in Season 4. The number in parentheses is my "scariness rating"; scale = 1-5 with 5 being the scariest. Minor spoilers throughout.
Dark Wrath - A demon stalks the halls and terrifies the owners of a rural house near St. Louis (3)
The Awakening - Restless ghosts trouble a Midwestern couple (2)
The Calling - She sees dead people. A young mother is traumatized when her ability to see and interact with the deceased becomes impossible to control (2)
The Apartment - A young Seattle couple are harassed by paranormal visitors when they move into an apartment where a vicious drug battle once took place (1)
Spirits of the Dead - A spooky horse barn is the center of otherworldly events as a dispossessed spirit attempts to control a assemblage of ghosts (2)
Where Evil Lurks - A complex haunting takes place in the Ozarks where a daemon that was summoned in a historically haunted house viciously attacks a young family (4)
Spellbound - Not a typical A Haunting episode. It mainly deals with the relationship between a son who becomes a devote Christian (and eventually a minister) and his mother who practices Wicca (1)
Echoes of the Past - A family moves into an ancient Vermont home where various spirits, mainly those of two little girls, interact with them (1)
Ghost Hunter - The 15 year old son of a ghost hunter becomes possessed while helping her paranormal research team investigate an old cemetery (1)
Stalked by Evil - A spirit that lurks in the closet of a Texas home becomes obsessed with the teenage daughter of the new residents (3)
Casa de los Muertos - A Latino guitarist and family move into an Arizona house haunted by the spirit of a white supremacist (1)
Monster in the Apartment - A young man who dabbles in the occult eventually becomes possessed by a demon and begins to stalk his female roommate (2)
Legend Trippers - Legend trippers are people who visit allegedly haunted sites to investigate paranormal activity. In this episode, several groups of teenagers explore an ancient, creepy Wisconsin cemetery (3)

I agree with G. Kavanagh and Never Again. I missed the whole season, so I bought this and was TOTALLY disappointed. This show has gone downhill.
It's now got a circus-like atmosphere. They brand themselves as being "pros"-enough so that they can pass themselves off as training people in that "Survivor-style" joke called Ghost Hunters Academy (ugh. I lasted half an episode)--but it's suddenly okay to bring totally untrained celebrities on the show? And the untrained celebrities run around cracking stupid (no, not funny, cro-magnon level) jokes and giggling? What happened to "serious" and "scary"?
It is also no longer entertaining--in fact, I'd say it induces major ennui--having fallen into formula. I can sit there and just about recite everything they're going to say. I was hoping they'd get over that after Season 4, but it didn't get better, it got worse.
If you MUST see this season, get it somewhere for free or hit up YouTube and make up your mind before wasting the money. If you're used to Seasons 1 and 2, this is a travesty. Rest assured, I'll no longer be buying DVDs--if I feel at all compelled to check out Season 6, I'll be doing it without paying a dime.

I used to be a diehard Ghost Hunters fan. Well, now that Ghost Hunters are boring, aging, and faking evidence, I got interested again in watching Ghost Adventures. What these three guys achieve as far as REAL evidence, energetic film making, and giving us a more satisfying back story to each haunted location, is far above and beyond what Ghost Hunters is dredging out these days. I like the way Zak provokes "only the bad entities" and ultimately gets results. Their reactions to their interactions with the spirit world are genuine and fun to watch. These guys are the real deal and unlike GH, they scream and run sometimes, and you know what? So would I!!! That's why I love them. I love that they take more time to show us the history of the locations and they are very respectful of the people they interview. It just adds so much more to the show and to our experience. Try not to be moved by "Redbone", the ex-inmate of Moundsville Penitentiary, who couldn't wait to take the boys on a tour of the prison after over 20 years of freedom from its walls, only to have to leave in tears when visiting his best friend's cell and recalling the day of his friend's murder in that very cell. VERY touching stuff.Zak, Aaron, and Nick love what they do and it shows. The episodes are sufficiently creepy and amazing in the evidence they produce. You will not be disappointed.
