(More customer reviews)I agree with some of the other critiques - I'm not sure how well this movie is made in terms of explaining the background of the story. Rose Red was scary. Diary is more like a documentary almost. More drama than horror. It mainly has to do with a husband and wife ... the wife is permissive and the husband is a jerk who sleeps with other women. Not sure what that has to do with the house exactly. I thought they should have focused more on how the house first became haunted. I feel there should be a prequel to the prequel now. To explain in more detail what occurred BEFORE all of this. Like before the house was built. What was there beforehand (like a cemetery, ancient burial grounds, etc.) and why is it haunted in the first place. It was not scary. It wasn't really even suspenseful. It did keep me interested through the whole movie though and the actress that played Ellen Rimbauer I thought was quite good. I would suggest seeing this movie if you are a big fan of Rose Red though because it does explain SOME things ... I wish they would make a sequel too though. "Rose Red: Part Two - Revenege of the House", maybe?
As far as the DVD itself goes, what someone else mentioned is true. If you click on Scene Selections, instead of the scenes for the Diary of Ellen Rimbauer, there are scenes from another movie. Which is a pretty major mistake, I say! No one in production caught that??? Come on, that's a pretty big thing to mess up. Unless... they did it on purpose.... I mean, this is Stephen King we're talking about. ;) I plan on writing to the production company to try and figure out the mystery identity of the Scene Selection mess-up. I'll update when I find out which move it is!

Dot.Kill (2005) Review

The killer shows us the deaths live via the internet, and Daines is out to get him.
And thus this is the whole plot of the movie.
This movie would fall under the catagory of a norish thriller. A few grainy depections of the murders shown over internet nothing substainal.
If you enjoy a cop thriller movie then I would say give it a look. I wouldn't say this was a must have to add to your collection, however it kept my attention and the story line was ok. You could pretty much guess what was going to happen, so there were no real surprises.
If this is the type of movie you think you might enjoy, I would suggest borrowing it from someone who has this on DVD, before renting or purchasing for yourself. Save your $.

(More customer reviews)The Japanese seem to find the western version of the Vampire myth quite appealing, and the expression of that fascination reaching a peak with the anime series Hellsing.
Set in modern-day Great Britain, Hellsing focuses on the effots of a powerful private enterprise headquartered in Great Britain and dedicated to defending "God, Queen, and Country" from the ravages of vampires. Led by Dr. van Helsing descendent Sir Integra Hellsing (an icy-cool, determined woman) with the aide of her vampire minion Alucard--the coolest and toughest anime hero to come along in many a day, the Hellsing Organization faces an onslaught of man-made "freak" vampires and ghouls plus the dangerous Iscariot Organization of the Vatican and their knife-wielding human regenerator.
If you enjoy bloody anime, this series is for you. It's not nearly as gruesome as many out there but does have more blood and violence than any of the stuff shown on Cartoon Network today. If you like vampire anime, then this series is also for you; it's a neat take and breath of fresh air in a genre well-exercised in Japan.
The animation itself is done really well in terms of visual quality, with a blend of CG and hand-drawn cel work; however, it is somewhat more static in nature than much contemporary anime, comparable to that done for the Record of Lodoss War series.
The audio, though presented only in stereo sound, features a soundtrack you'll want to hunt down like a freak after fresh blood. Surprisingly, the english dubbing is quite good, featuring British-accented voice actors far superior to the average anime dub.
Hellsing is an excellent addition to any anime fan's library and a must-watch for vampire lovers everywhere.

A very winning cast, great location, superb kids' story to work with, good production make for some campy scariness for kids with entertainment for mom and dad as well. Charming little movie that appeals to the kid in all of us.The predicament of the cows really did make me laugh out loud.
The acting by one and all was excellent, especially Richard E. Grant as the head of the vampire family. He brought a non-threatening, yet nerve wracking (well, for kids, anyway) presence to the movie. His charming powers over Mrs. Thompson were hysterical, and the entire cast did very well with this movie.
One for the kids that mom and dad will enjoy sitting through, which is a rarity anymore, except for the likes of Shrek.
Oh, and I can't omit Rollo Weeks, as The Little Vampire himself. He was so charming, so perfectly nailed the role of Rudolph. As well as the role for arguably the cutest kid in movies, Jonathan Lipnicki, as Tony Thompson. The crush Anna had on him was acted out adorably by Anna Popplewell, as well. There was just great acting all around in The Little Vampire.
A job well done by all involved. Entertaining, campy, scary enough for the little ones without freaking them out even slightly, and still entertaining for the adults.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I will preface my review of this movie by saying that I much prefer Blade, From Dusk til Dawn and Underworld type vampire flicks that all have tons of action, violence and gore in them. Whenever you get into the PG-13 world you are going to get a much more friendly and watered down film with less brutality, violence and language. Reality and financing dictates that the movie studios have to appeal to a broader audience when possible to make enough money to allow the films I mentioned previously.
I am not familiar with the book that this movie is based upon. That being said this was a fun 'teen oriented' vampire movie with no significant violence or gore. This is a PG-13 (unfortunately) flick; you know it's going to be in the vanilla spectrum so don't expect Blade or Underworld. The CGI animation and coloring of John C. Reilly's pet spider was amazing, but then again any quality CGI animation done nowadays should be and usually is amazing. The makeup effects, set design and costumes were well done and give the movie an interesting modern Gothic appearance and feel.
The characters were interesting and I found myself pretty involved in the story. Comparing this film to the wildly successful Twilight films, the two out so far any ways, Cirque is much more interesting. There are no moping or perfect looking Twilight characters and Cirque was just more interesting than both Twilight 1 and 2. I love John C. Reilly and vampire movies so this was my primary motivation for seeing this in the theater. Reilly's character was not in his usual comedic or musical roles so it was good to see him do something completely different. Willem Defoe has a smaller role in this film and plays a very interesting vampire character as well.
All in all this movie is worth seeing and if you are a genre fan it is probably worth owning.

The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice (2008) Review

It's always a guilty pleasure catching up with the Librarian, whose job is to guard history's secret relics and treasures, some of these magical in nature and all stowed away in the hidden chambers of the Metropolitan Library of New York. Flynn Carsen is sort of like a modern-day Indiana Jones, except that he's awkward and plenty nerdy. But Flynn does keep his wits about him, and, after years of holding down the Librarian gig, he now boasts experience and smidgens of confidence. This current Librarian may fumble about some, but it's always fun seeing how he'll get out of whatever scrape.
The more things change... The movie opens with Flynn at a posh event applying the finishing touches to his tuxedo. He then navigates down a stairway, sips champagne, and then does a spit take with the champagne. Which goes to show that, even after all this time, Flynn Carsen is still refreshingly hapless. But, after this latest escapade, which climaxes in a sword fight, Flynn Carsen is officially burnt out (his girlfriend dumping him has something to do with it). Back at the library, by virtue of sheer grousing, he gets himself some time off and ends up flying to New Orleans, all gigged out in bow tie and panama hat. So, as they say in the Big Easy, laissez les bon temps roullez.
Or not. The holiday rapidly turns into a desperate relic hunt, with Flynn taking on ex-KGB agents, voodoo magic, and the undead. Along the way, he partners up with a mysterious chanteuse to rescue a kidnapped scientist. The relic in question is the rumored Judas Chalice, of which origin dates back to Judas Iscariot and his 30 pieces of silver. The chalice reeks of malice but holds the brew that is true - that is, if you're a vampire in need of resurrecting. And, since those ex-KGB agents have unearthed the coffin of Vlad Dracul, you can see where this is going.
What I like best about TNT's Librarian series is that it's not at all pretentious. It wallows in its unabashed cheesiness and farce, even as it hunkers down with a pretty good adventure story. THE LIBRARIAN: CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE is the third in the series, and it doesn't disappoint its fans. Hokey fun, mythical artifacts, indecipherable manuscripts, supernatural villains, and a likable, nebbish, talky hero (even the bad guys complain of his always talking in paragraphs). By now, Noah Wyle's got his part down cold. The neat thing about his character is that he can do something heroic but, then, subsequently have the rug pulled out from under him. And, when this happens, he's so damn good-natured about it.
Flynn has had a hard time keeping his lady loves. First Nicole (Sonya Walger), then Emily Davenport (Gabrielle Anwar). This time out, Wyle's romantic interest is exotic Stana Katic, who plays bluesy singer Simone Renoir with femme fatale nuances. Maybe she's a keeper. Or not. Meanwhile, Jane Curtin and Bob Newhart (at his stammering best) are again solidly on board as the museum directors.
I never thought I'd ever say this, but I had a better time with THE LIBRARIAN: CURSE OF THE JUDAS CHALICE than with that last Indiana Jones flick. This movie, like its predecessors (The Librarian - Quest for the Spear & The Librarian - Return to King Solomon's Mines) are tongue-in-cheek throwbacks to those high adventure pictures churned out back in the 1930s, '40s and '50s. I don't think I'm reaching that much when I say that even the score here is rousing enough that it actually reminded me of those Errol Flynn swashbucklers. But, of course, Flynn Carsen is no Errol Flynn. Errol doesn't know the Dewey Decimal System.

True Blood: The Complete First Season (HBO Series) (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Rabbit ears on pawn shop televisions are about my speed; needless to say, I don't watch television. However, kind friends mainline this series two or three shows at a time, and they got me hooked: were I to be completely honest, I might have to admit to giving serious thought to obtaining this by less-than-legal-means. It actually might be worth jail time.
Speaking as someone who was born in America's deep South, this series captures everything about Louisiana that is appealing. (Spanish Moss, vampires, latent racism and homophobia, the dichotomy between Christian Southern values and patriarchal, brutality-enforced poverty, sassy Southern women who know how to fight with chains, etc.)
What it makes it really stand out, though, is the casting: there isn't a bad actor in the bunch--and they are all believable as Southern archetypes. Nelsan Ellis as the short order cook/drug dealer Lafayette and Stephen Moyer and Anna Paquin as the romantic leads give mesmerizing performances.
True Blood, or possibly the original series of books from which it arose, is an arresting set of stories: Faulkner says that the only thing really worth writing about (or thinking about, by extension) is the human heart in conflict with itself. The Southern United States depicted in True Blood is conflict embodied--you are a supposed to be a good Christian, and follow the rules of an established society, but you live in the middle of a swamp so dense and wild that it believably could be home to minions of Satan, like vampires.
It's a lot to think about. If you are one of those artistic/professional types with too much to do, don't start watching this; it becomes an obsession.
And Now: A Short Review of the Actual DVD--this is the regular, not Blu-Ray version, as my $100.00, cigarette-burned, pawn shop t.v. doesn't do Blu-Ray.
Price: $10.00 less than my local electronics store.
Extras: There is some very funny stuff here that was not on the original websites for the series: ads for lawyers for vampires; vampire hotels; vampire dating, all done with the appropriate levels of fake bad acting and camp.
Don't be afraid to look at the French language ad as well. It uses all of six French words which you probably already know.
There is also a short video parody of someone like Hugh Downs doing an in-depth report on vampires. Complete with bad video backgrounds for foreign locales and hokey vampire internet conspiracies, this is a well-done, satirical background take on some of the 'vampire movement's more glossed-over history.
One negative: the commentary tracks play over the original episodes; it's neat to watch for about five minutes, and then it's a little bit like dissecting a romantic relationship--the mystery dies once the magic involved gets out into the bright light of day.
However, overall, True Blood Season One is well worth watching again--particularly in the pilot episode, the acting, and the effort the cast and crew put into characterization and detail, is even more obvious the second time around.

Blood Ties: Season Two (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)The center of "Blood Ties" has always been the love triangle between PI Vicky Nelson, cop Mike Celucci, and vampire Henry Fitzroy.
But that love triangle starts constricting painfully in the second season of "Blood Ties," which finishes the all-too-short horror/mystery series. The plots are solid whodunnits and thrillers that center around strange supernatural beasties and items, and the trio of lead actors are excellent (particularly the striking Kyle Schmid). The one problem is the ending -- it's a big fat "to be continued" that leaves you craving a wrap-up TV movie.
When a wealthy man is brutally killed, Mike (Dylan Neal) knows he has the right suspect, a sneering woman who was at the crime scene. The problem is, the man died from being savaged by a giant cat -- and Mike saw her eyes glow when she was upset. So Vicki (Christina Cox) and Henry (Schmid) start investigating the woman's home and her family -- and uncover an ancient family secret and a tragic loss.
Among the other cases they handle: creepy art and men drowned with oil paint, a mysterious box that sticks Vicki in a time loop, a Goth club being threatened by a strange drug and insect attacks, a gang of truckjackers accidentally let loose an Incan mummy, and a murderer who suddenly changes his story (claiming psychic visions). And Henry unexpectedly seeks Mike's help when another vampire starts killing in his territory... leading to a reunion with the slinky Christina, his ex-lover/vampire-mother, who's got a nasty problem that is more than it seems.
Unfortunately, all this supernatural stuff is slowly crumbling away Mike's professional credibility, and the relationship between the three of them is getting increasingly tense. When an old demonic enemy returns to attack Coreen, Vicki must depend on both men to help -- but it may not be enough.
"Blood Ties Season Two" is in some ways darker and more desperate than the first season, now that Vicki has gotten totally immersed in the world of the supernatural (and Mike is starting to sink in too). But the core of the series is much the same -- it still sticks to the monster/artifact-of-the-week formula ("Talismans don't kill people; people kill people"), and maintains that distinctly dark, grimy feel, with lots of pale light, shadowy urban streets and a very unusual vampire.
And the murky mysteries are nicely speckled with gritty action sequences, monsters both typical (werethingies!) and unique (bug demons!), and some painfully bittersweet moments, such as the tragic fate of an out-of-control, self-loathing vampire. But the writers keep things tongue-in-cheek, and have some wonderfully quirky dialogue ("Don't you have a lucky shirt or socks?" "I have a bonnet that Anne Boleyn gave me right before she tried to poison me. I'm still here, so I guess you could call that lucky").
The biggest problem with "Blood Ties Season Two"? The ending. It's abundantly clear that there was a third season intended that would dealt with the myriad hanging plot threads -- namely the fractured love triangle and the whole Astaroth problem -- but it never happened. So the ending is depressing and unsatisfying. Come on, make us a TV movie!
Kyle Schmid actually steals the limelight in this season -- Henry becomes a more passionate, tragic figure as he deals with some of his past demons, while thankfully maintaining his sexy-trickster attitude (after admitting that he likes Celucci, he adds, "I'm gonna regret having to draw him being eaten by hellhounds"). And he pulls off even potentially-cheesy scenes, such as when Henry describes to the half-blind Vicki how luminous and vibrant the world looks to him.
But Christina Cox and Dylan Neal still hold their own -- Vicki seems more at peace with her new "night life" and the crimes she has to investigate, but her emotional life is even more snarled than it was before. She's getting pulled in two directions, and it now hurts. And Mike is slowly coming to terms with Henry's presence -- and evens seems buddyish once or twice. But the slow destruction of his career and his nice comfortable life is a painful thing to watch.
"Blood Ties Season Two" has an unsatisfactory finale, but it's still a solid fantasy/horror/mystery series that is one of the better vampire shows to make it to TV. Definitely give it a watch.

(More customer reviews)If I were rating this movie solely on quality of the film, it would get one star. if i were rating it solely on how much i love to watch it even though it's awful, it would get 5 stars. SO I averaged it and got 3.
The dialogue is horrendous, the effects cheesy, the music (not the soundtrack which is great, but the score) indescribably awful. It looks like a made for TV movie.
However- I can't stop watching it. i saw it 3 times in the theater and pre-ordered my own copy. It entertains me. Plus, Edward is nice to look at... oh, James too. LOVE James.To me this movie is absolutely hysterical- where it doesn't intend to be. The scene where Edward first sees Bella in class and he looks as if he may throw up on her??? Great! The look that Billy Black and Edward exchange as they pass each other in their cars? Priceless. I love the baseball scene! But the crouch down and prepare to fight stance they take at the end... Can anybody say Power Rangers? But just mentioning all this makes me want to watch it again. I know it makes no sense. It just has that power.
I should be embarrassed to like this, but I'm not. I will watch it over and over again proudly. I will recommend it to anyone I can. Watch it and love it. But know that it's terrible and know that it can't compare to the book and that all of it's charm is due to it's cheesiness.

Blade - House of Chthon (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Blade: the Series is currently playing on HDNet. I watched the first three episodes and was totally hooked. I downloaded the rest of the episodes from iTunes and watched them all over the space of about a week. I regret having missed the show when it was running on Spike. I think the show's creators did a really good job of translating the movies to television, and the show itself was a little more adult than most basic cable fare.
Unlike some of the other reviewers, I think the production values and acting in the show were just fine. While I initially had some problems adjusting to Kirk Jones as Blade, I think he improved a lot as the season wore on and was good at conveying Blade's reluctant caring and his gruff exterior. I was especially impressed with Jill Wagner, who plays Kirsta Starr, Blade's spy in the House of Chthon. Wagner was equally convincing wearing a evening gown or kicking butt in blue jeans and a t-shirt. In the first half of the two-hour pilot episode, Wagner wears blue jeans and carries a gun. About halfway through, she shows up at a party wearing a spectacular white dress. Wow. She's a gorgeous gal. Of the series regulars, only Jessica Gower, who plays one of the key vampires, struck me as a little wooden.
I do have some plot issues. Emily Hirst plays Charlotte, a pure-blood vampire, born a vampire instead of being turned like most of the others. Hirst is 13 or so, and her character is supposed to be 200. Do pure blood vampires grow old, maybe at a slower pace than humans? The other pure blood vampires shown in the series are all adults of different ages. I don't really understand the concept. Another gripe: during the pilot, Krista has a sniper rifle loaded with silver-tipped ammo aimed at Marcus Van Sciver's head, but instead of just blasting him, she insists on taunting him over a two-way radio she's left behind. Of course, we know what that means...
Quibbles aside, I enjoyed the show a lot, and I am sorry it only lasted one season. I would like to know what happens next. Maybe if enough people buy this DVD of the pilot episode, we can get a few direct-to-DVD movies made featuring the same cast.

Sanctuary: The Complete Second Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)"Sanctuary" has always been a murky, shadowy series, but the second season makes everything much, much darker -- death, insanity, and the biggest baddest Abnormal since... well, ever. The handling of the Cabal and Ashley are pretty clumsy, though the stories that follow are more solid and intense than those of the first season.
In the aftermath of the Cabal's worldwide attack, the gang encounters a young con artist named Kate Freelander (Agam Darshi), who has been hired by the Cabal. But when Magnus (Amanda Tapping) and Will (Robin Dunne) go hunting for the Cabal's headquarters, they encounter Ashley (Emilie Fullerup).. who is leading an all-out assault on the Sanctuary.
The Sanctuary gang also have to take in hundreds of new Abnormal refugees, in addition to their usual problems -- a future scenario filled with cannibalistic zombies, a flying superhero, Henry's old flame is attacked by a peaceful Abnormal, a vampire squid, a rageaholic Abnormal mob boss, and a gang of trust-fund vampires. Even worse, Druitt (Christopher Heyerdahl) seems to have returned to his "Jack the Ripper" ways, and Magnus seems to be going insane after shooting Bigfoot (Heyerdahl again).
And a trip to Mumbai goes horribly wrong when Will becomes the host to a bizarre Abnormal, which connects him to Big Bertha, a vast, ancient Abnormal "who raises the seas and shakes the land." Problem is, someone else wants that power instead.
Maybe it's just my imagination, but "Sanctuary Season 2" seems considerably darker than the first season (although it has more sunlight). It starts off rather wobbly for the first few episodes, which are basically devoted to writing both Ashley and the Cabal out of the story -- and it's done in a painfully contrived manner, especially since the Cabal seemed to be the Big Arc Villain.
Fortunately the standalone episodes, and the ones involved with Big Bertha, are far better -- lots of buttkicking action, gruesome murder (knives, spores, zombies), some truly bizarre abnormals, and the usual gothic gloom and rainy skies. But there's still an undercurrent of quirky humor (Henry and Bigfoot go off to geek it up at Comic-Con... especially since nobody notices the Big Guy there). And the whole episode with the Adjustor was just hilarious.
Tapping has some of her most brilliant performances here -- grief, paranoia, struggles with her ex-lover's killer nature, and even the possible loss of the Sanctuary network. Heyerdahl is amazing as both the bloodthirsty Druitt and the gentle (if grumpy) Bigfoot; Dunne is awesome as the gentle, intelligent Will (as well as the hardened, cold "future Will"), and Ryan Robbins gets a great episode devoted to Henry's personal issues.
The one false note: Kate. Darshi is a good actress and the character has promise, but why replace the annoying blonde with an equally annoying brunette? Fortunately, there are some excellent guest stars -- Michael Shanks, Erica Cerra, and the villainously hot Calum Blue.
"Sanctuary Season Two" has some stumbling blocks (I want more Cabal!), but the actors are still brilliant and the storylines are picking up. Worth seeing despite the wobbly first few episodes.

WolvesBayne (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I'll keep it short. This is an indie film, produced by "FIWI Entertainment". Credits are given to
the State of Louisiana, Governor Jindal, the Parish and city of Lafayette and its mayor, and the city
of Crowley and its mayor for assistance in the filming. The overall tone of this film is not a horror
movie, nor a parody nor camp; it seems basically designed just to be an entertaining film. The parts
don't always add up to a predictable whole in films; sometimes a bunch of somewhat-average components
add up to a real flop. In this case a bunch of average (at best) components add up to something more
entertaining than it ought to be. The plot is vague and unpersuasive; the special effects are not
high budget, the action scenes for the most part are rather lame, the acting is very uneven, the dialog
hardly brilliant, yet somehow it manages to be fun. Maybe it's that some of the actors and actresses are
pretty good-looking. Maybe its the romantic subtext between the lead male and female. Whatever the
reason I came away liking it OK. The film has no rating but if it were rated it would fall somewhere between
PG-13 and R. There's no nudity, no foul language, no guts but quite a bit of blood. And frequently
skimpily, shall we say provocatively-dressed women.
Bayne is just an ordinary, ruthless, self-centered businessman when his life becomes transformed by getting
bitten by a werewolf. He is befriended by the woman who opposed him business-wise, "Alex", because she
knows he is now caught up in a battle he knows nothing of, and because she figures she may need his help.
Like the dust-jacket says, it's vampires against werewolves against slayers, not to mention vampires against
vampires, with unsuspecting humanity the stake in this game. Don't expect the plot to make sense; just
enjoy the show. Deserving special nods: Mark Dacascos as the vampire Von Griem, Rhett Giles as Jacob Von
Helsing, and Christy Romano as "Alex". There are no "special features" but yes, there are subtitles available.

(More customer reviews)To all those reading this, I hope you take the time to consider. I will not say that this video is a waste of your time and money. I will say it was a waste of mine though. The concept was a good idea. However, they fell short of the supposed intended target. This series is severely lacking in the detail work that makes a series great. Their hero is painted a hero from the beginning, he isn't made to stand the trails that make a hero. While the "bad-guy" (in my opinion, the hottest guy on the show) lacks the depth and definition that made him a villian.
This show is only focusing on the young and shallow. If they wanted to attack all genres of the community, a little action, a dash of humor appropriately placed, and a well-served villian who knows how to act with a flair. Garnish the serving with some well placed hi-jinxs that is sure to keep the audience feeding out of their hand. That, and you could have picked a better looking hero.
One of the key differences between DANTE'S COVE and THE LAIR is that THE LAIR has no cliff-hangers or segways. Everything here is cut and dry as you would expect a vampire to act. Undead or alive, this series lacks the backbone to make it a true cult classic in the gay community. Hope they have better luck next time around.

Dark Shadows Reunion (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)The essential elements here are a gathering of nearly all surviving members of the cast save for "Barnabas" who is conspiciously absent. Alexandra Moltke (Victoria Winters) appears for the first time since leaving the show. Some of "Dark Shadows" most famous scenes are shown in a quick review of the actors work. Dan Curtis is also present to tie a lot together.A few genuinely funny responses in the question and answer session, particularly John Karlen (Emmy winner, but not for "Willie" who gave a perfect performance of a man having a nervous breakdown that should have won one) and a perfect impersonation of Thayer David by "Adam". Also included are star appearances on the Mike Douglas Show and The Merv Griffin Show and a few adverts. I don't recommend this DVD unless you are a real fan of the show. It moves rather slowly and you see the actors as they are today, much older but wiser. But fans love them 100% and are just glad to see them all together again.

The Moving of Sophia Myles (2006) Review

The scenery surrounding the church, and the church itself was beautiful!

Dracula - The Dark Prince (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)Or so they would have us believe. This film is strongly influenced by the Bram Stoker novel in mood and menace, but it is still highly entertaining and quite well done. Meant to be a historical drama about the real life of Vlad the Impaler, Dracula: The Dark Prince takes us to Romania in the 1400's, to see what made the man the legend he is today. The story is told from Vlad's point of view, as he recounts the story of his life before an Orthodox Ecclesiastical Court in defense of his crown. We first see Vlad as a child, training for battle with his father and younger brother, Radu. But soon after, Vlad's father is killed by the noblemen of his own country, who are constantly looking after their own interests above anything else. His brother kidnapped and brainwashed by a perverted Turkish Sultan, and himself believed to be long dead, Vlad eventually raises an army to help him take back the throne that rightfully belongs to him from the noblemen and their hand picked NEW prince. Once back in power, Vlad and his beautiful, new, young wife commence to having a son. Simultaneously, Vlad takes his revenge on the noblemen of his country who were responsible for the death of his father and so many others. With that matter taken care of, Vlad focuses on his main interest, dealing with the accursed Turks that have plagued him all his life. This brings up the problem of his younger brother, who is now one of them, and matters are not helped by the failing mental state of Vlad`s wife, who is disturbed more and more as she discovers the brutality of her husband`s style of government.
While the film does mention and even depict Vlad's more legendary and gruesome exploits, those that were less likely to be true were presented only as rumors amongst the people and noblemen of Romania that the Prince himself always denied. The film doesn't really take much of a fantasy angle, it simply drops hints here and there to remind you that this is the man known as Dracula. True, in the end the possibility that Vlad did become one of the undead is left open, but even the act that many have claimed ruined the reality of the film could easily be interpreted as the hallucination of a dying man. Overall, this is a pretty good film for what it is, and I recommend it to all fans of Dracula, real or imaginary.

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete First Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)I've never seen/read Twilight nor did I know that the Vampire Diaries was based on a series of tween books. I, generally, try to stay away from those kind of "kid" versions (I'm more the Tru Blood type). Anyway, I decided to give V Diaries a shot and I'm so glad I did.
Vampire Diaries is a guilty pleasure. Despite the fact that the series is set-up with the high school crowd, it definitely has a more adult feel to it with the complex issues that come up and the dark, edgy violence. The first couple of eps played a bit too 90210(ish) but then the series really took off.
The main characters are well rounded and believable even in unbelievable situations. The series has managed to weave a set of relationships that breath life into each of the characters. Elena is the high school girl who must not only face personal tragedy but a new boyfriend (Stephan) that may or may not be what he seems. And Stephan has his own family issues with his bad boy brother, Damon. And while Damon is definitely bad (body count anyone?)he has reasons he believes are valid for the pain he inflicts.(mostly)
Elena as played by Nina Dobrev is a smart girl with a compassionate heart who definitely doesn't put up with any BS. In this vampire tale she doesn't just automatically tell Stephan it's all right when she finds out his secret. It's not cool that he's a vampire. People die around him and that's not ok. They fall in love despite his being a vampire rather than because of it.
Stephan Salvatore, Mystic Falls resident brooding vampire, started out (to me) a little too much like an Angel wannabe but Paul Wesley has done a competent job in opening the character up. What he does to Damon in the basement was truly chilling. I was like, HEY!, aren't you supposed to be the good guy!
And last but not least of the lead characters, Damon. What can I say. Damon is just delightfully bad. Ian Somerhalder plays him with relish. In the wrong hands, his character could have easily become a cliche but the actor has turned him into someone you just can't help but feel for (equal parts sympathy and revulsion)as he struts his way around, doling out cruelty with a smile, all the while hiding a secret of his own.
The supporting cast is also just wonderful in their roles. Kudos especially to Candice Accola for her portrayal of Caroline Forbes. The whole cast was well chosen and that they're all beautiful and sexy doesn't hurt either.
Anyway, before this review becomes a novel... just watch a few eps. I dare you not to get hooked on it.
