Cruel World (2005) Review

Cruel World (2005)
Average Reviews:

When I bought this movie I had never heard of it. I'm not sure if this even came out in theaters or not, but since it's only $10 I figured why not. This movie is mostly lame. There are some good moments. Edward Furlong's acting is pretty good and sadistic.
There are absolutely no bonus features at all. The only menu is a pop up menu to use while the movie is playing. Still it's not so bad for the low $10 price tag.

Millions witnessed Philip Markham's (Edward Furlong, Terminator 2: Judgment Day) public humiliation when he got dumped by Catherine, the beautiful star (Jaime Pressly, TV's My Name Is Earl) of a popular dating show, and now--several years and reality series later--he wants revenge. After taking Catherine captive, he lures nine unsuspecting co-eds to her luxurious mansion in the middle of nowhere, trapping the contestants in his own sick version of reality TV--where the challenges are bizarre, the danger is real and death is just a competition away.

CBS, please get your butts in gear on this one. Marquesas is one of the two best (and most important) Survivor seasons of all time, and it's ridiculous that you haven't released it yet. I would only rank Pearl Islands ahead of marquesas in terms of watchability, unpredictability, and beautiful locations, and I'll be the first one to buy it when you actually release it. So hop to it! A lot of people are dying to watch this one again!

I am a HUGE fan of this season. The DVD, however, fails to show the best scenes. It follows the cast from the beginning try outs but ends before all of the drama really started. None of the fights are included on this DVD, it doesn't include the recording sessions. I was very disappointed because it's marketed as if it includes the entire season.

This animated series is the funniest thing on TV!
Interesting characters, intriguing plot, fun art style.
A great gift for anybody from a kid to a college student!
Why Cartoon Network is wasting airtime on shoddy live-action shows when great animation like this can be had from Canada (oh bless you, Great White North!) baffles me.
Totally baffles me. :D

Yes, this movie is similar to Saw, but not a total rip off. It has its interesting moments, and a good twist. The ending was a little too improbable, but I'll let it go, since the movie was interesting and kept me awake. Fun horror movie. Nothing too gory or gross.

Survivor - Season Two - The Australian Outback: The Greatest & Most Outrageous Moments (2001) Review

Survivor - Season Two - The Australian Outback: The Greatest and Most Outrageous Moments (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I need to preface this review with this note: I am a HUGE fan of "Survivor," and despite the bad reviews, I actually enjoyed the DVD of the first season quite a bit.
There's nothing very interesting in this "best of" compilation. It basically starts off with each contestant's audition tape/interview, then proceeds to one scene of something that happened to them during their stay. This is immediately followed by tribal council and their final words. Unlike the first season's video release, there are no additional challenges here, there isn't any additional nudity or profanity (other than the one of Alicia and Kimmi fighting, which we've seen on TV at least a thousand times by now), there isn't any graphic footage of Michael slaughtering the pig. In fact, even the "Symbolic Tribal Council" for Michael's departure that Mark Burnett said wasn't shown on TV but would turn up on the DVD didn't make the final cut.
What do you get as far as additional features go? There's footage from all the contestants' appearances on The Early Show. If you have a DVD Rom drive, they've recreated the official CBS web site for the show on disc - including the weekly show summaries, contestant profiles, popularity poll ratings, Outback feature, games and the Real Media video clips. This is rather interesting, since you can read about what happened during their stay in the Outback in full detail, with pictures and video supplementing the experience. However, not all of the video clips on the online site made the transfer to the disc. So basically, if you have an internet connection, logging on to the official site is still a better option.
What's good about the DVD? The transfer is brilliant. You can see actual rainfall during scenes where it didn't seem to be raining when the scenes were aired on network TV. But for me to be writing a review about a show and to have to focus on this aspect should tell you what you really need to know about this DVD. After months of anticipation, it's quite a letdown.

Finally, the best season of NEWLYWEDS is on its way! After the first season i thought the show had hit it's peak because the second and third season weren't that great! But i think this season showed a new side of both nick and jessica. We got to see jessica film THE DUKES OF HAZZARD (and check her out in THOSE shorts) and nick without jessica. Although the finale was SOOOOOO SET UP it's unbelievably unbelievable, it was great to re-cap the entire series! Enjoyable, funny, NOT DISAPPOINTING! Buy it! (or wait for the box set with all four seasons which will be unavoidable to descrease your savings balance and increase theirs!)

The Amazing Race - The Seventh Season (2001) Review

The Amazing Race - The Seventh Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having Rob and Amber from "Survivor" compete on this show's Season 7 was obviously a bit of stunt casting (and, to a degree, was regrettable, because TAR shouldn't really need to resort to such attention-grabbing ploys) but as far as that goes, they were a definite upgrade from Alison from "Big Brother", who appeared in Season 5 along with her boyfriend Donny. It really shouldn't come as a shock that they proved to be excellent competitors, and there's one leg of the race in particular where the Robfather pulls a Jedi mind trick to convince some of the weaker-willed to dance to his tune.
Personally, I think Seasons 3 and 6 have been the strongest, but this edition has one really great team (Brian and Greg), the requisite team you love to hate (Ray and Deana), the token old couple (Meredith and Gretchen) that refuses to go quietly into that good night (NEVER bet on the old couple to be eliminated first on any TAR season), a stereotypically snarky gay couple (Lynn and Alex), and the ever-popular team where you can't believe the words that are coming out of their mouths (from Kelly--not so much from Ron). At least one of the teams had no real business being on the show--the word is that they were actually recruited by the casting agents, rather going through the audition tape process like everyone else, and it is pretty much evident. A member of another team spends so much time groaning and complaining about inevitable defeat that you'll want to hit the mute button whenever he shows up on the screen.
This season spends rather more time in South America than in previous outings and, unusually, scarcely hits Europe at all, and then takes a literally surprising direction for the home stretch.
There's plenty of drama, and at least three photo finishes with desperate flat-out sprints to the mat, and one of these is among TAR's all-time great moments to watch. And thankfully, no one proves to be as wretched and vile as TAR5's Colin and Christie or TAR6's truly loathsome Jonathan and Victoria.
Plus there is llama herding, so you know that you're in for quality entertainment. Until TAR3 and TAR6 come out, this edition is not too shabby.

The Real Housewives of Orange County - Season One (2006) Review

The Real Housewives of Orange County - Season One (2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What really makes me angry about this show are the kids! They live in multi-million dollar homes, have everything anyone could possibly want, totally funded by their parents.....except ambition, the most valuable asset they could give their children, not free BMWs!
Easy living kills all ambition in rich kids. Don't think so? Just look at the Ozzie Osbourne spawn! They have the funds and chance to become anything of value in life such as doctors and other high paying professions, but just become slugs and drones, parasites living off their parents well into their young adult years (Tamra are you listening? Kick the young bloodsucker OUT!)
And the women, OH, where to start.
I did like Vikki, the insurance company owner, at least she works for her money, not marrying it. But in Season 2 her huge mouth which is constantly going started to grate real bad. We have dubbed her "La Pie Hola Grande" and every time I think of her I see the gaping, yapping mouth.
JO: A supposedly college degreed woman who can't quite read the instructions on the back of a fast food package, can't sing, wants to sing, but does not know music related terms, has no interest in learning. Her speaking voice peeled paint. I don't think she'd actually make it through the first round of American Idol. She stated on the show, she HATES responsibility. Does not want to raise her rich ex-boyfriend's kids, would rather spend, spend, spend than work, stay out all night, and pretty damned young to be such a serious boozer! She's no doubt searching for her next sugar daddy.
JEANA: A successful working lady with disasterously raised children! Her daughter seems like the only one with manners or ambition of any sort; her old sons are basically large toddlers who bad mouth their mom who just stands there and passively takes it; brutish kids who would rather spend a lifetime of partying and basically being stuck at a 16 y old mentality. I just shriveled up like a bug on a hot rock when she said she bought each kid a million dollar home! What did these parasitical kids do to DESERVE that!!! Talk about the age of entitlement!
TAMMY: A minor train-wreck, but a train wreck. Illegitimate child with boyfriend, one ambitionless bleached blond, tatooed daughter living with a scummy tatooed biker type who breeds pit bulls ( oh, yeah, Riverside, Calif area needs more of THOSE!)
TAMRA: I like her. She has worked for what she has, but parenting skills to oldest son the PITS! Oldest son is 21 going on 14. Homeless, jobless, ambitionless, living on the dole with parents, the hardest part of his day is figuring out what time to wake up. Step-dad Simon really stepped up to the plate and got him into a Mercedes Benz workshop going into sales. He sits at home whining that he has no job because "opportunity hasn't come his way." Kid, I have news, opportunity does not find YOU!! You find IT!!!!! Oh, what a hard thing life is for this poor boy! I applaud every nasty dig his step dad gives him for being a slug and drone (Drone: An adult male bee that lives in the hive, does nothing for its keep, while the rest of the hive goes out and makes livings every day.)
Tamra: Do the kid a favor immediately, give the kid a deadline to get ANY job, then kick his lazy a$$ out! You do him no favors and are crippling him. At least Burger King would teach him to get up and out of the house EVERY day. Yes, that's what a job is.
Tamra is married to joyless Simon who must think smiling causes impotence. He gave her a $40,000 rolex for her 40th birthday. He sells Mercedes Benzes. Note to self do NOT buy a car from this dealership. He's either selling a lot of cars or they're over priced. He also says he can't sell a car unless he has sex every day. Gee the rest of us just have to go to work every day without sometimes. We still are able to do our jobs. What does he do when she's out of town? Guess he doesn't sell anything.
LAURI: Last and least. Nothing about this aging wannabee 27, 47 year old post menopausal woman is authentic! Fake blond hair, fake over done nose and lips, fake breasts. She's on the prowl for a rich husband. With her druggie son who is frantically trying to get her attention by constantly getting in trouble with the law. But mom's so blinded by dollar signs in her eyes, she doesn't seem to see the kid. And the ambitiousless older daughter who can't even pick up the cat poop in the condo she's sponging off her mom with or even bother to make car payments. Lauri comes with more baggage than LAX!!
I really wonder if boyfriend is serious about an engagement, or just wants to be on TV and once the series is over, engagement is over. Hurry Lauri, before he finds a younger blond thing with less baggage and gets away!!!! Three words for George: Pre-nup, pre-nup, pre-nup!
As Season 4 approaches here's some clues on what might happen:
Laurie and George's made in Heaven wedding turns into the Marriage from Hell. As it dissolves into a knockdown dragout through divorce court, Laurie has time to audition for the Batman sequel as The Joker, or at least as Mrs. J. She already has the face (attention Nancy Grace, better find out what really killed Heath. Sorry, couldn't resist.)All of the slug kids are still sitting around waiting for someone to hand them a living.
SEASON 4:
New Golddiggers.
Gretchen: Likeable, pretty, not apologizing for being an obvious G.D. Has a rich sugar-daddy who is dying of cancer. She got him to take her to the jewelry stores before he went to die in the hospital. With all the publicity of the show, she'll find another daddy if this one does not get her to the church on time.
Lynne: Poster girl for WHITE CHICKS GET TOO MUCH SUN!! By the age of her kids, she's probably in her late 40's, looks 54. It won't be long until she's looking like a Kennedy matron, like, say Maria Shriver's mom who resembles a breathing mummy. And like the chubby cougar from last year who they dropped from the show, Lynne is extraordinarily BORING! I don't know why there wasn't someone else in Coto who could have spiced things up a little. I predict this is the LAST season. And that's not a bad thing.

The Amazing Race: The First Season (2001) Review

The Amazing Race: The First Season (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am happy that the show finally found an audience that made the producers of the show decided to release the first season on DVD. I think of all the reality series, this one will hold its own best in "repeated viewings" and on syndication. Unlike other reality series, even if you already know who wins or who gets eliminated in a particular episode, it doesn't ruin the quality of the episode. But of course there's still nothing compared to seeing these episodes for the first time.
It is a revolutionary reality series that has a concept that was probably very hard to pull off on paper (can you imagine the reactions of the TV executives when they first heard about the concept of the show). But amazingly, they did pull it off! It is very evident that the producers treat each episode as "special episode" because can you just imagine the logistics and the number of people (across the globe) involve in producing this show?
There are some aspects of the show that were later on in the succeeding seasons were changed mostly for improvements. Example of this is that in the first season, Phil only received the teams who came in the last place (a person from that particular country receives those who came in before the last team). Part of the fun is watching the reactions of the racers anticipate whether they were eliminated or not. Because in the first season the racers already know if they came in last, we were not able to see those kinds of reactions.
Some of the most memorable teams were Team Guido (you won't believe the extent they were willing to do to get ahead), Lenny and Karyn (the original fighting couple, but their fight looked real and not some deliberate attempt to gain screen time. When Karyn said "Disappointing", you believe her!), Nancy and Emily (even though Emily acted like a brat, Nancy just radiates with motherly innocence in the race), and Kevin and Drew (the original funny guys)
When the winner finally cross the finish line at the finale, with all the eliminated teams cheering for them, you just can't help but feel like being a part of the race.

A year or so back I had no clue who the h**l Kat Von D was. One of my friends liked her show and her love for tattoos. So I decided to look her up online and to my surprise...wow! Her work is very in depth and awsome! I don't have cable so I am not able to watch her television show. When I saw The First Season was coming out on dvd, I had to have it! I didn't buy it when it first came out due to issues.
Recently I went over my friends house and she has cable and we were watching it. The show is awsome! Recently my set arrived in the mail and I have been watching it since then. You get to see a little in-depth look into her personal life along with her love for tattoos. Her JOB! Tattooing is not an easy job...as it is shown on the show. Kat and her posse are very good at their work and are very great artists!
Great Reality T.V. Show!!! Not full of bulls**t!!!
Problems are:
This dvd set says on the box Season 1 Vol. 1. I dont get why? Too much confusion here! I looked on many websites online and it lists 13 episodes for Season 1. This set includes 13 episodes which makes the entire first season. So why do they have it say "Season 1 Vol.1?
The 3 dvds in this set are not in your regular dvd case. No regular case...no slim cases. They are kept in cardboard sleeves. WTH! So everytime you take out a disc to watch it will get scratched. So why would you want to buy dvds that will get scratched each time you want to watch it? When I took out each disc to inspect them, they had light scratches. Light scratches "who cares" some may say? I care! I spent my money on a dvd set that should last a while, not a year. It says that the dvd companies are cheap with releasing television dvd sets!! I believe it's a sneeky ploy. They make them cheap, so then when it messes up people will keep buying the sets over and over again.
Also if you like your dvds to have awsome extras...this set doesn't have them!

Project Runway: The Complete Fourth Season (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Season Four of "Project Runway" starts out slow, but it builds up steam and draws you in... the show is still a high-class production and leaves other "reality" shows in the dust.
Early on, Tim Gunn pronounces this season's ensemble to be the most talented group they've had on yet... but it's a little hard to believe him since the cast lacks the dynamism and sharply defined personalities of earlier seasons. Nevertheless, a couple of designers quickly reveal themselves as unlikable or bizarre, and that always adds a little narrative spice. I would say that this season was largely packed with bland personalities, but once they drop out in the first half, the show gets more exciting, and when it becomes clear that one of the most irritating contestants has a pretty good shot at winning, the subsequent eliminations will get your adrenaline going.
This season was also marked by constant one-upping on the part of Heidi Klum and the producers -- almost every episode has a twist or a Big Secret. Sure, it's gimmicky... but so what? It's also fun! Perhaps the greatest thing this season is Heidi's new wardrobe -- after being pregnant and having her baby during previous seasons, she's now trimmed back down and is again able to wear whatever she wants. One of the great joys of this season is to watch the reactions of the contestants as Klum arrives on the runway in one eye-popping outfit after another.
Great show. Looking forward to Season Five! (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue film reviews)

I LOVE project runway. since it doesn't run in germany (where i live) i always order the dvds from the US. so i wonder everytime why they cannot just NOT tell the winner on the backside of the dvd?? this time i just didn't look on the backside, but then the winner was shown in the menue of the dvd....
i missed the reunion and also the "wear are they now" - there was just a short interview with the winner. the extras are too few.
heidi strikes me as quite heartless - there is never any empathy and she just says her lines.
but still i watched the season in almos just one go! it's marvellous. but no project runway season will ever come up to season 2 (santino!). that was the BEST.

I am a true Survivor fan. From the moment I watched the very first episode I was hooked. I looked forward each week to see what challenges they had, and who would be the next voted off. I really missed the show after it was all over.
When I seen this dvd advertised I was very excited. I bought it thinking that it would have the 13 episodes that were shown on tv, plus extra never before seen footage. I was a little disappointed to find it was only hightlights from the episodes. There was a lot that they left out, like the challenges which I truly loved. So you dont get the exact feel of it all.
I still enjoyed the dvd, and I enjoyed the extras, (well, most of them, excluding naked Rich). It brought back some good memories of watching it for the very first time.
So if you watched it before, and are a fan, I recommend picking this dvd up, but if you didnt watch it and were planning on getting this dvd to see what the fuss was all about, I recommend holding off.
Maybe they will release all 13 episodes that was originally shown on tv!

Project Runway - The Complete Third Season (2007)
Average Reviews:

As I said on my reviews of Project Runway - The Complete First Season and PProject Runway - The Complete Second Season, this show had me hooked immediately, and Season 3 was no exception. Thanks to this season's designers, I actually enjoyed this season more than season 2. Some of the creative challenges include: creating an outfit made out of items found in the designer's living space; designing a gown for Miss USA in the Miss Universe Pageant; making matching outfits for a dog and its owner and creating a background story for the owner (actual dogs modeled the outfits on the runway!); and one of my faves, using materials from a recycling plant in Jersey!
Yes, there is some drama on this season (two designers accused of "foul play", one designer being rude to another's mother), but as before, the drama does not overtake the creativity that is this show's hallmark. Another wonderful thing about this show is how there is also a nice age range of the contestants (one of my faves is a 40-something mom of 5 children with another on the way during the show!).
Extras on the DVD include:
1. "WEAR Are They Now?" featurette: curiously, this time they eliminated one of the Project Runway Season 3 winners, with no explanation of why there is no update for the missing designer (I will not reveal the names so as not to spoil the series for anyone).
2. "WEAR Was He Then?: Tim Gunn, Making It Work" featurette: a nice mini documentary on Gunn (can you believe this very formal guy was inspired by pop-up books as a kid?!?). Gunn definitely seems more human after watching this.
3. Tim Gunn's Season 3 Blog: contains Gunn's commentary on the individual designers/episodes
4. Designer Bios
5. Outtakes presented by L'Oreal Paris

Celebrity Mole - Hawaii (2003)

At first I preferred the 'civilian' versions of the Mole, but when I got this on DVD it quickly became my favorite and the reruns of the original Mole were fun to watch - but not as funny. Kathy Griffin (whom I know more from her voice as Alice on 'Dilbert' than from 'Suddenly Susan') and Steven Baldwin stole the show in my opinion and the other five were there for the ride.
The Mole is the only reality show I can stand, tolerate or watch, and this, the first celebrity version of the show has become one of my most favorite shows in my DVD collection. A better mix of well-known to moderately-known celebs take part in this crazy, silly, and completely all-out wild journey through our 50th state as the seven contestants try and figure out who is the mole.
As for technical specs: chapter breaks where you'd want them (at the commercial breaks), the closing credits have the funny moment in full screen (unlike the original broadcast where its computer-trimmed down to Postage Stamp Vision - or where I live, cut from the broadcast to tell you about an upcoming local news report about several cats who were alarmed by loud noises), and the special features are numerous. I especially liked seeing the extended Post-Execution Reactions and more from their daily Confessional interviews.
My only problem was with the packaging - the whole swing arm thing for one of the discs where it likes to loosen itself and rattle in the packaging every once in the while made me find a little nicer home for the set.
As for the whole deal about this reality show not taking itself seriously...I think that was the point. Reality shows are allowed to have a little fun, too.

Season 3 was one of the best of the Big Brother Series. (I also loved Season 2 with the "evil" Dr. Will). I'd forgotten alot of Season 3 - Amy & Marcellus, Chiara & Roddy, Lisa & Eric, Danielle & Jason... and good ole Gerry.
The fighting, the loving, Amy leaving then returning, Marcellus and his decision with the Golden Veto, Danielle and her comments in the Diary room - I loved all of it and was saddened when I finished watching it again.
The only "extras" are the audition tapes of the contestants. Interesting but I wish there were more "extras" such as comments from the House Guests or Julie Chen. Maybe the producers will add more on the next Big Brother DVD release. (Hopefully they will release more).
My biggest beef is with the packaging. I received the set with several DVDs loose inside their jewel box. A friend of mine received her set with alot of scratches on the DVDs. Instead of having each DVD attached inside, two DVDs "share" the same space, one an inch or two down from the other. The "top" DVD on each side is supposed to hold down the other one but comes loose so they both rattle around.
Another thing - I've noticed Amazon has raised alot of their prices and this is no exception. I bought BB3 here when it first came out and paid $49 for it but now it is selling for
$62.96. Ouch!
