I do not know how much of the episodes are staged, but they make for compelling viewing. I had tears in my eyes watching the plastic surgery episodes, and felt for poor Sophie when she got a little overwhelmed. It is also a real kick seeing how Gene works his mojo in all the different situations. This is good stuff!

Generation Kill (2008) Review

Generation Kill (2008)
Average Reviews:

As an Iraq veteran I was skeptical about watching this at first, thinking that it would be a "Hollywoodized" version of the war. Then a buddy of mine told me it was by far one of the greatest shows he's ever seen, so I gave it a go. Halfway through the first episode I was awestruck. Like the title of my review states, this show is brutal, relentless, and above all AUTHENTIC. Though I was with the Army, our job was very similar to these Marines in that we rode around in Humvees searching for the bad guys.
Anyone who has served in Iraq in a combat role will relate to these Marines all-too-easily. Well talk the same, have the same frustrations with the chain-of-command and understanding our mission some days (though thankfully my unit did not have anyone like "Captain America"), and deal with the same issues regarding supplies, lack of sleep, and fighting an enemy who the day previously may have been begging you for food.
Some viewers may be turned off by the extreme vulgarity and profanity, but fact is that is the way most "grunts" talk. And I think every Platoon or Squad in theater has its own "CPL Pearson." Fact of the matter is, none of us are saints and war does bring out mankind at both its best and its worst. "Generation Kill" shows both sides to the Marines in the rawest sense. One thing I like is that it does not attempt to take a political stance one way or the other on the war. Some may view the series as anti-war, given the way some of the Marines question their mission and why they are there. But again that is another reality of this war.
I never thought I would ever want to watch a movie or series about Iraq, however this is by far one of the best series I have ever seen, period! For anyone who is a veteran, knows a veteran, or just wants to know what the war over in Iraq is really like, "Generation Kill" is a must see!

Based on the national best-selling book by Evan Wright, Generation Kill is an authentic and vividly detailed 7 part HBO mini-series event that presents a uniquely epic and intimate portrait of the first 40 days of the Iraq war from the perspective of the Marines of the First Recon Battalion – a new breed of American soldiers.
The mini-series tells the story of these young Marines physical and emotional journey into the heart of Baghdad in those initial weeks, and how the war reveals to be much more complicated, problematic and tragic than anyone had contemplated. Many of the complications and problems that arise are due to the unwieldy military bureaucracy which the Marines confront in the midst of the war, the challenges of over-zealous and incompetent commanding officers, ever-changing rules of engagement, a non-existent strategy, severe deficiencies in necessary armor and supplies, and an enemy they don’t understand.
Generation Kill is a humorous and frightening first hand account of these remarkable men, of the personal toll of victory, and of the brutality, camaraderie and bureaucracy of a new American war. It is a profoundly insightful and realistic look at the risk, costs and ultimately, the failures of the war.
Written and produced by Emmy-award winner David Simon (the Wire), and also produced by the award-winning George Faber (Elizabeth I).

The Simple Life - The Complete Third Season (Interns) (2003)

Of all the other seasons Id have to say this is the best!!! Especially because they are a lot more episodes where Paris actually tries to work and to help others not like any of the past seasons where she doesnt want to get dirty or she doesnt even try. This season has more comedy to it and Paris shows america that she is a nice intelligent person and that she is not just a 'dumb blonde.'

Project Runway - The Complete Third Season (2007) Review

Project Runway - The Complete Third Season (2007)
Average Reviews:

As I said on my reviews of Project Runway - The Complete First Season and PProject Runway - The Complete Second Season, this show had me hooked immediately, and Season 3 was no exception. Thanks to this season's designers, I actually enjoyed this season more than season 2. Some of the creative challenges include: creating an outfit made out of items found in the designer's living space; designing a gown for Miss USA in the Miss Universe Pageant; making matching outfits for a dog and its owner and creating a background story for the owner (actual dogs modeled the outfits on the runway!); and one of my faves, using materials from a recycling plant in Jersey!
Yes, there is some drama on this season (two designers accused of "foul play", one designer being rude to another's mother), but as before, the drama does not overtake the creativity that is this show's hallmark. Another wonderful thing about this show is how there is also a nice age range of the contestants (one of my faves is a 40-something mom of 5 children with another on the way during the show!).
Extras on the DVD include:
1. "WEAR Are They Now?" featurette: curiously, this time they eliminated one of the Project Runway Season 3 winners, with no explanation of why there is no update for the missing designer (I will not reveal the names so as not to spoil the series for anyone).
2. "WEAR Was He Then?: Tim Gunn, Making It Work" featurette: a nice mini documentary on Gunn (can you believe this very formal guy was inspired by pop-up books as a kid?!?). Gunn definitely seems more human after watching this.
3. Tim Gunn's Season 3 Blog: contains Gunn's commentary on the individual designers/episodes
4. Designer Bios
5. Outtakes presented by L'Oreal Paris

The Girls Next Door - Season 2 (2005) Review

The Girls Next Door - Season 2 (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
By now the world knows these three beautiful women by name: Holly, Bridget, and Kendra are no longer described simply as "Hef's Girlfriends" (although they are...all 3 of them). Thanks to the E channels hit reality show the Girls Next Door, people are able to get to know these women, and take a quick glimpse into the amazing lives that they lead at the Playboy Mansion.
Holly is girlfriend #1 -- she sleeps with Hef in "their" bedroom, has been dating Hef for the longest (going on 6 years now!), and in general maintains the status of Lady of the House. She's a real sweetheart, and while she dreams to someday be able to marry Hef and start of family of her own, she still enjoys the close friendships she's made with Bridget (who has been dating Hef for about 4 years), and Kendra (who has been dating Hef for about 2 years now). The three of them together equal tons of fun, and they each bring a unique personality to the show.
This DVD boxset is awesome. It is 100% completely uncensored -- so anything that is either blurred, bleeped, or edited out for content control while the episodes air on live TV, is likewise left alone for the DVDs. Boobs, butt, and cuss words abound, so even if you've seen all the episodes on TV, I guarentee the experience is quite different once you view them again on DVD.
One of my favorite features of these discs would be the commentary. All three women provide commentary for each and every episode, and I fully recommend taking advantage of that fact. They will nitpick the episode apart, tell the audience when and where the network took a few too many liberties with the editing, and basically provide a little extra insight, and some interesting little tidbits. Holly personally stated that she loves doing the commentary for all the episodes because it gives her the opportunity to sometimes "set the record straight" and "have the last word" on some of the many mansion escapades!
Don't miss out, because these are seriously some of the most entertaining DVDs you'll own! I've considered it a very wise investment!

I write for the Teen section at Bellaonline and have had this set awhile. This is my revised review as some people felt my last review wasn't helpful. The box no where mentions the episodes of when Jessica shot "Dukes of Hazzard," even though they aired in the original run. The set includes the following 20 episodes:
Disc 1
The anniversary
Nick's 30th Birthday
The Newlyweds Shop
The French Language
The Duet
A Newlyweds Christmas
Jessica's 'Dessert"
Puppy Madness
Disc 2
The Newlyweds Vacation
Valentine's Day
Cacee Moves In
Mistmatched Threesome
Celebrity Issues
Eye Surgery
Newlyweds Baby
The Kentucky Derby
Disc 3
Nick and Joe
The Travelling Newlyweds
Nick's Lawn
The Newlyweds
& Special Features
Special features
They include: deleted scenes, Nick & Jessica MTV Timeline, "Happy Birthday Jessica, From Nick Special", Jessica "Moments," Nick "Moments, and a few other things.
I did watch the show in it's original run and notice some episodes missing. I don't know why. I will update my review in a traditional manner, but I just wanted to help with some of the confusion about what episodes are included.

The Princes of Malibu: The Complete Series (2005) Review

The Princes of Malibu: The Complete Series (2005)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Princes of Malibu is reality TV taken to such a cartoonish extreme that it can't really be considered reality TV anymore - I mean, once you've put a full-on dream sequence into your show (as well as an army of Elvises, multiple attempts to sell music awards on eBay, more celebrity cameos than a 2000s era Simpsons episode, and musical stings fo each character) your pretensions of showing real life have pretty well gone out the window.
The central conceit of the show is that multimillionare record producer David Foster's two stepsons have just been kicked out of college and are living it up at his Malibu mansion, making a huge mess and holding gigantic parties without his knowledge. So Foster tells them that if they don't start paying $10,000 a month in rent, he'll throw them out. Ignoring all thoughts of getting jobs, the boys turn to their permanent houseguest and "best friend" Spencer Pratt (who is also an executive producer on the show) and start scheming and scamming.
But really, has reality TV ever been about realism? I don't think so. Reality TV is about insanely over-the-top situations and people in the same manner as scripted TV, it is just a bit more improvisational (in theory) than a scripted sitcom. "Princes" takes this to its logical extreme. So, why should you, dear reader, watch the show?
1. For the hilariously over-the-top schemes. I don't want to give away too much, but essentially you have the wacky hijinks of the Simpsons or Ed, Edd, and Eddy but done in real life (for certain values of real life). The boys are like obnoxious frat boys given an unlimited budget and told to scheme, and things get zany fast.
2. For the strange frission of rooting for and against pretty much every character simultaneously. David's right in just about everything he says, but he still comes across as if he's also rude and insulting to people who don't deserve it. The boys may be lazy, ungrateful, and the like, but in a sense they typify a rebellion against authority that I think everyone can on some level identify with. It seems like to see them as completely "the enemy", you'd really have to see Michael's goofy ideas in The Office as "unfunny, because they could hurt the company's long-term survivability", and the Three Stooges as simply poor role models for our children with their excessive eye-based violence.
3. To see Spencer Pratt in something before The Hills - sure, he's still kind of a scumbag, but here, he is at least a semi-likeable scumbag.
4. To recapture the mood of wicked excess in 2003-04 that gripped certain segments of our society - one can see the show as, like Dynasty or Dallas, a sort of period piece. When your children ask what caused the housing bubble, you can show them "Princes of Malibu" and say "those people, mostly".
General internet reaction seems to be against the show, but I urge you to give it a try - I watched it with my cousins last summer and we all found it hilarious. And hey, it's only $8 - certainly much cheaper than a new movie, and it's about 4 hours of content (no commentary either, just straight episodes).
