Junction Boys (2002) Review

Junction Boys (2002)

I first watched this movie while working as a Behavioral Health worker with borderline criminial Adolecents age 12-17. A fellow co-worker brought the film in as a suprise "treat movie" for the kids.
In all my years (there have been many) I have never seen a reaction to a film from this population in all my life. The story of the team and Mr. Bryant and how it wa portrayed in this film made the kids begin to think of their own lives , and how they could do better for people.
It was a strange reaction to this film, but it truly moved them and myself.
As far as the film itself goes Berringer is great as is the support cast and the studio did an excellent job. I have heard the book is even better.

The Fifa 2006 World Cup Film - The Grand Finale (2006) Review

The Fifa 2006 World Cup Film - The Grand Finale (2006)
Average Reviews:

Even though the quality of footage is good, this DVD misses so many exciting points of the last world cup. The group stage is dealt with in basically 5 minutes, with a few highlights of selected games.
Argentina - Serbia, for example, only 1 goal shown. France - Brazil game omitted, France - Spain game also ommited. Nothing said about controversial Italy - USA, or Italy - Australia game. About half of the teams competing were not shown, let alone mentioned!
Highlights of England - Portugal (1/4 final), France - Portugal (semifinal) and Italy - Germany (semifinal) each goes on for 10 minutes, way to much for these games that produced 3 goals in total!!! waste of time, they should have used that time for more group games.
Overall, very dissapointed, although the highlights of the final game and the interviews were good. Not what I expected. The 1982 and 1986 world cup highlight videos were the best, in my opinion. If I knew it would be like that, I would not have gotten this DVD.

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006) Review

NFL America's Game Super Bowl I-XL (2006)
Average Reviews:

I love a good work of fiction but sometimes reality can be very entertaining. This series is well-made and so intense and passionate that it brought me to tears more than one time. Every episode is a unique road to the superbowl by the team who won it and told by 3 important actors of the team. The 1985 conquest of the Bears for example is told by Mike Ditka, Mike Singletary and Jim McMahon. The stories that leads to the big game are fascinating, touching and often surprising. I love the series so much that I was comtemplating buying the first DVDs on the market which focus on one particular team and all the superbowls they won. But now, I was happy to see that they compile everything in one package. The packaging is very well made, the 40 DVDs being separated in 4 eras (66-75)(76-85)(86-95)and (96-05), 10 discs by DVD. Also, an interesting 88 page book with every conquest by every team. On the DVDs you have also a bunch of interviews that we couldn't see on the NFL network. If you love the NFL this is a great work by NFL films and Steve Sabol and a great piece of history to possess. The only thing missing is the Colts Superbowl last year but the documentary is about the first 40 Superbowl so we can't have everything unfortunately.

History of Soccer: The Beautiful Game (2001) Review

History of Soccer: The Beautiful Game (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 6 DVD box set is titled, "History of Soccer: The Beautiful Game" on the outer package, but in fact, the documentary is actually called "History of FOOTBALL," so I will be using the word "football" to describe this great game, as it should be called.
At any rate, this is a very meticulous package. It contains the first ever, motion picture of football. Film footage of the 1901 FA Cup Final between Spurs and Sheffield United. Every World Cup final goal ever scored. And these are just the EXTRAS.
The real show is the documentary, narrated wonderfully by Terence Stamp. It starts from the beginning, where a multitude of cultures and nations began to kick a ball around, and it moves through every significant event that has shaped the football world since.
There is the Soccer War, where an actual war was started as a result of a football match.
There is the Moscow Dynamo team, captured in Nazi-occupied Russia, whose exploits against Nazis in a concentration camp were the stuff of communist legend, but are revealed to have been less than legendary now that the truth can be told.
There are the giants of club football, such as Manchester United and Liverpool on the England side, Juventus, Milan, and Inter on the Italian side, Real Madrid and Barcelona on the Spanish side, and many others. And there is even a look at the darker side of the game, such as hooliganism, various victims of air crashes, and the horrendous Hillsborough tragedy.
A spotlight is shone on every football-loving nation, from England, where the game's governing body was founded, Italy, Brazil, Spain, Holland, Germany, Russia, and many more.
There is tragedy and triumph, elation and dejection at every moment. Scores of interviews from actual participants of many matches lends a human side to every story, and if you love this game of football, you will eat this DVD series up like I did.
Buy this if you are curious. Buy this if you are a fan. But most of all, buy this because it is a quality piece of documentary work with so many extras that it will take you a long time to complete viewing the entire set. You won't regret it.

My Sister's Keeper (2002) Review

NAMI: The Nation's Voice on Mental Illness (www.nami.org) honored this movie with a 2001 Outstanding Media Award. it's excellent. A non-stereotyped portrayal of a person with mental illness and an at times difficult, but loving relationship with her sister. A true story. Book by the same name. It both opens minds and entertains. Great acting by Kathy Bates: an informative contrast to her role in the movie Misery.

Playmakers - The Complete Series (2003) Review

Playmakers - The Complete Series (2003)

This is a fascinating, engaging, television show. A show of true quality that does not talk down to its viewers. That is probably why ESPN cancelled it, and that's a damn shame. The NFL should be brutally ashamed of itself for thinking that its public image would be effected by what is clearly a work of *fiction.* Why does the NFL think its public image is that high anyway? Don't get me wrong I love football, but I hardly consider the game, or its players & coaches to be paragons of virtue. Does anyone? ESPN should be ashamed (though not as much) for caving to the pressure. Hopefully, another network will pick up this fine, fine show so that we can be treated to another season. At the very least, the producers should be allowed to give the show a decent finale instead of leaving it unfinished.

What generated all the controversy about PLAYMAKERS, ESPN's daring hit series about a fictional pro football team? This eleven-episode, three-disc set lets you immerse yourself in the off-the-field lives of the Cougars from its very beginning. With its lightning-fast pace and great characters, this gritty and edgy drama is as intense a roller-coaster ride as any drama on the field.

Dhani Tackles the Globe: Season 1 (2009) Review

Dhani Tackles the Globe: Season 1 (2009)

Dhani Jones really makes this program. Great personality, sense of humor and a natural in front of the camera. Locations are interesting with a novel approach to learning about other locations from a sports angle. Dhani completely throws himself into each cultural experience. I especially got a kick out of the extra challenges he faced, good-naturedly, in the Cambodia episode. This man has a whole other career waiting for him once he leaves football. I predict we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.
Interesting locales, challenges, beautiful photography and a host who feels like a best friend--how can you go wrong? Highly recommended!!

I felt compelled to write a review on this because I sorta feel conned. I bought this 3-disc set hoping for a little more than about 50 minutes on each disc. Film companies can fit hours and hours of footage on one DVD, why did NFL Films decide to stick less than an hour of footage on each disc? It doesn't make sense other than to be able to charge more for it. It's fascinating to watch and I love NFL Films but all this footage could have easily fit on one DVD. It's not like theres directors commentary or any real special features. One every disc they have little snipsets of individual players and the Sabol comments on them (Jim Brown is one example). Even with this, you're not getting any more than a little over an hour of material on each DVD. It's a great set but it's not worth the price at all
