(More customer reviews)Produced by Discovery channel, it is over 8 1/2 hours of a mind-blowing documentary on the pharoahs of Egypt. You are shown the discoveries of the Kings and Queens and the painstaking trouble they take to identify the mummies. They show the out-of-the-way inscriptions that spell out a detailed look at everyday life, as well as the secret personal lives of these pharoahs. From the Egyptian museum, and the Giza pyramids, to Luxor and the Valley of the Kings, and on to the Aswan quarries, they cover everything in exquisite detail, and with the best professionals in their fields to support their findings. You could watch it 5 times and see something new each time. On the 1-5 scale, I would have to rate this video a 7. In a word -- FANTASTIC!!!

(More customer reviews)Dhani Jones really makes this program. Great personality, sense of humor and a natural in front of the camera. Locations are interesting with a novel approach to learning about other locations from a sports angle. Dhani completely throws himself into each cultural experience. I especially got a kick out of the extra challenges he faced, good-naturedly, in the Cambodia episode. This man has a whole other career waiting for him once he leaves football. I predict we'll be seeing a lot more of him in the future.
Interesting locales, challenges, beautiful photography and a host who feels like a best friend--how can you go wrong? Highly recommended!!

(More customer reviews)The four-part documentary is well done, breaking the phenomenon that is modern China up into its 4 vital parts and examining them closely. The representation is fair, and each segment is well-paced. The bonus disc - the Great Wall, is also well recounted... except for the actors speaking with a fake Chinese accent: why not hire English speaking Chinese for the parts?

Plain Truth (2004) Review

(More customer reviews)I happened to come across this movie completely by accident one night while channel-surfing. I have to say that I tend to avoid the Lifetime channel as a rule, but this particular night I came across the beginning of this movie and it looked interesting. So I gave it a chance. Wow, what a surprise! This turned out to be quite an enjoyable movie with tons more depth and intrigue than a typical Lifetime made-for-television movie will offer. In fact I would even rate it among the top movies I've seen recently.
Alison Pill plays a young Amish girl who is arrested on suspicion of killing her newborn child. Normally, the "girl gets arrested for killing her baby" wouldn't make for a very worthwhile movie plot since this topic is nothing new, but having an Amish girl be in the center of it all adds an unusual twist to the movie, one of the things it has going for it. And Alison Pill nails this role; I'm shocked that she has not been in more well-known movies. Her acting talent is obvious from the beginning, not to mention being quite attractive. Equally as good is Mariska Hargitay as the lawyer who represents her in court. And she isn't too hard on the eyes either. I don't mean to harp on about the attractiveness of the 2 women in the lead roles, but hey, it certainly doesn't hurt to have that as a bonus.
But getting back to the merits of the movie, don't let the word "Lifetime" discourage you. Believe me, I've done my fair share of cringing from the painfully-bad movies that Lifetime tends to show. But I can assure you that "Plain Truth" is a welcome change, with some great plot twists (you won't see the final one coming a mile away). Highly recommended!

(More customer reviews)I have watched this show on the Travel channel and I was absolutely frantic to find it on DVD. After months of not finding it, I was thrilled to find it here on Amazon. I love to watch how people survive in the wilderness with no TV, no modern technology, not so much as metal for knives, something a lot of people take way too much for granted. Mark and Olly show nothing but respect for these people, even through they swam in the river after a ritual sacrfice to stop it from raining, and that caused it to rain for 4 more days! I can't wait to get the DVD to watch.
