(More customer reviews)I was lucky enough to be at this show last year, and it was a wonderful evening. Very rarely does an opportunity arise for so many great artists to come together and perform on one stage, so it was moving to see so many acts, and fans, gather together to pay tribute to the talents of Trevor Horn, possibly the greatest producer of the last 30 years.
All the performances were of a high standard, including Trevors' own band The Buggles, who opened the show with two UK top 20 hits, "Video Killed The Radio Star" and "The Plastic Age". Other highlights included the reformed and newly fronted Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Yes ("Owner Of A Lonely Heart"), the divine Ms Grace Jones, vocal spot on and oozing charisma on "Slave To The Rhythm", and of course ABC. Martin Fry is a true showman and he was on top form for this performance.
For me, the highlight however was the duo DOLLAR. They reunited especially for this event - no mean feat given Thereza Bazar now lives in Australia. Dollar are a group who have never been given their rightful place in musical history. They were the first act who recognised Trevors producer potential from The Buggles records, and as such were the first to utilise him as a producer (and song writer). The result was 4 smash hit UK singles, two of which are included here, "Give Me Back My Heart" and "Mirror Mirror". It was the sheer magnificence of these records (most notably "Hand Held In Black And White") that attracted ABC to Trevor Horn. ABC of course became a global phenomena, opening the door for Frankie, Art Of Noise, Seal. You get the picture. Upshot is, had it not been for Dollar, you probably wouldn't have the chance to view this magnificent show, because a lot of these records wouldn't have been made.

What About Brian - The Complete Series (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)This series initially started two different ways: J.J. Abrams (creator of "Lost" and "Alias") trying to go back to his roots of simple relationship drama (year ago he created the WB hit "Felicity"); as well as Jeff Judah and Jason Katism (of "Life as We Know It" and "Freaks and Geeks" fame) trying to produce a show with their signature quirks, yet one with a premise appealing enough were they wouldn't get cancelled after 13 episodes. And so "What about Brian" was born.
The show was simple enough: Brian (Barry Watson from "7th Heaven") is a serial-dater that has never been able to keep a girlfriend around longer than several weeks. Upon the engagement of his best-friend he finds himself as a 7th-wheel among his closest friends (including his college roommate/business partner and his much-older sister). The series follows as Brian tries to search out love, as well as the various romantic entanglements/problems that his various friends find themselves in such as: affairs, new business ventures, single-parenthood, engagement, etc.. Essentially the show was about a group of early thirty-something's trying to not only make their mark on the world, but trying to share their success with "that someone special" and all the hilarity and heartache that comes with the territory.
Unfortunately for the creators and ABC, while the premise was interesting, the actors/characters likable, their was always something missing from the series. That special SPARK that a series needs in order to find itself on the lineup for the better part of a decade was missing. After airing 6 our of the produced 8 for its first season the network pulled the show, re-staffed a majority of the producers/writers, fired an actors/hired three additional actors... basically all in an effort to make the show what it could be. And while yes, the second season is an immensely pleasing 19-episode arc ultimately the series was doomed from the beginning. And like similar shows of the past (such as "once and again" which had many of the same producers) the show was never able to find a following and it was canceled due to low-ratings.
That is not to say the show is bad in any way. In fact it's highly enjoyable, its just easy to tell why people would prefer to watch it in one or two sittings, vs. weekly over the course of a year. Presented here on 5 DVDs are all 25 aired episodes (the 2 unaired episodes leftover from season 1 are not included) along with deleted scenes and behind-the-scenes interviews.

The mission is billed to both the crew and the world as an example of human achievement and satisfying humankind's desire to explore the unknown, but it soon becomes clear that there is much more to the mission than this. Before reaching their first destination, Venus, the crew discovers the 'Beta Object', and the true nature of their quest is revealed.
This show is full of mystery and unanswered questions that leave you with great anticipation for the next episode. Throughout the season, we get to know the crew through their interactions on the spaceship Antares and through their memories of what happened on Earth before the mission. The characters struggle with the complications of friendships, romance, and passion both on the Antares and Earth, which test their integrity and strength as human beings. In addition to the interpersonal challenges, the Beta Object is affecting the crew physically, mentally, and emotionally. We are left wondering if these changes will help or hurt the astronauts on their journey...
Defying Gravity does an outstanding job of appealing to all viewers, regardless of whether they consider themselves SciFi fans or not. Sadly, this television show went mostly unnoticed due to poor management by the ABC network. While it may not have gained the huge following desired by ABC during its short-lived debut, it has a loyal fanbase and the potential to achieve great success if properly advertised and scheduled.

Celebrity Mole - Hawaii (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)At first I preferred the 'civilian' versions of the Mole, but when I got this on DVD it quickly became my favorite and the reruns of the original Mole were fun to watch - but not as funny. Kathy Griffin (whom I know more from her voice as Alice on 'Dilbert' than from 'Suddenly Susan') and Steven Baldwin stole the show in my opinion and the other five were there for the ride.
The Mole is the only reality show I can stand, tolerate or watch, and this, the first celebrity version of the show has become one of my most favorite shows in my DVD collection. A better mix of well-known to moderately-known celebs take part in this crazy, silly, and completely all-out wild journey through our 50th state as the seven contestants try and figure out who is the mole.
As for technical specs: chapter breaks where you'd want them (at the commercial breaks), the closing credits have the funny moment in full screen (unlike the original broadcast where its computer-trimmed down to Postage Stamp Vision - or where I live, cut from the broadcast to tell you about an upcoming local news report about several cats who were alarmed by loud noises), and the special features are numerous. I especially liked seeing the extended Post-Execution Reactions and more from their daily Confessional interviews.
My only problem was with the packaging - the whole swing arm thing for one of the discs where it likes to loosen itself and rattle in the packaging every once in the while made me find a little nicer home for the set.
As for the whole deal about this reality show not taking itself seriously...I think that was the point. Reality shows are allowed to have a little fun, too.

Greek: Chapter One (2007) Review

(More customer reviews)A little Animal House, some Van Wilder, a dash of American Pie, and a pinch of Gilmore Girls-esque drama, Greek is the kind of premise that could have easily gone cheesy and overdone. Fortunately, it doesn't; whether it's depictions of life in the Greek system are accurate or exaggerated, it manages to find a happy medium between alcohol-drenched party scenes and actual character-driven drama.
It's the characters, while mildly stereotypical, that really make the show; anyone who was awkward as a college freshman, whether they were in the Greek system or not, will identify with Rusty, the dorky physics major who longs to be in a fraternity; his older sister Casey may at first glance play the perfect blonde sorority princess, but she has plenty of flaws and problems to work through. Her current high-society boyfriend Evan, while definitely arrogant and a little flaky, also seems to have a sensitive side; but it's Casey's ex, ringleader of the Animal House-esque Kappa Taus, aptly-nicknamed Cappie, who steals the show. A funny, fast-talking, goofball with a heart of gold (which gets broken entirely too often), he's the kind of character you can't help but love (unless your Evan Chambers, anyway). The supporting characters, too, are surprisingly well-developed (Dale, Rusty's Bible-thumping, physics nerd roommate is hysterical, and Casey's archenemy Rebecca is the girl everyone loves to hate), and the show even tackles such issues as gays in the Greek system. However, the main theme of the show seems to be the importance of brotherhood, family and friendship. All in all, a great show, definitely worth a look.

Brothers and Sisters - The Complete First Season (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)Somehow this show originally escaped my radar - then I was talking to a friend about a song from one of the "Ally McBeal" soundtracks and she said, "have you seen the new show with Calista? And Rachel Griffiths from 6 Feet Under? And Sally Field and Patricia Wettig?" I went home that night, set a TIVO season pass, and was relieved to find all the full-length, previously-aired episodes on ABC.com. Soapy? A bit. Addictive? Definitely!
Some actors and their stories, like the brother and his wife trying to conceive, aren't the most mesmerizing...but overall this is a show you can easily get addicted to. Just the right amount of drama and humor to keep it from being a one-note affair, and the parade of guest stars (Meredith Baxter, Marion Ross, Susan Sullivan and Rob Lowe, who's technically credited as Special Guest Star for this season) is icing on the cake. I'm anxious for the new season to begin...and I can't remember the last time I said that about a series that wasn't on HBO!

Scrubs: The Complete Ninth and Final Season (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)It's too bad that this show had to be called Scrubs, because it would have made a relatively good first season of a different show. And, as another reviewer has pointed out, the Scrubs holdovers were often the worst part of this last season.
Why was this show finally canceled? Let us count the ways:
1. In a move that apparently only the staff writers found funny, Zach Braff's J.D. became increasingly vane, stupid, and effeminate to the point of being totally ridiculous. This change began in season 5 when JD's silliness leaked out of his fantasies and into his normal behavior, when J.D. began truly acting selfishly with regard to his relationships with Elliot (especially) and Turk (occasionally). This annoyance persisted throughout seasons 6 and 7 as the fantasies got longer and dumber and the stories lost their humanity and realism. Though the writers sagely brought back the sweet and introspective J.D. for almost all of season 8, we find him back in his worst insecure, jealous, appletini drinking form here in season 9. He seems to exist only to appease those who tuned in to see Braff's mug.
2. After slowly softening Dr. Cox and Kelso up for the last 8 years, the writers had no antagonist against whom they could pit these new med students. In the first seasons, audiences rooted for JD, Elliot, and Turk to hold their own against Kelso, Cox, and Bonnie. In later seasons, the stories became more about unfolding those once menacing characters and watching JD, Elliot, and Turk grow up. With all of that out of the way, these new cast members are left without much of a challenge, as no one really finds Cox or Kelso all that scary. Even the patients, often demanding, uncooperative, or just hillarious in earlier seasons of Scrubs, are mostly just warm bodies this time around.
3. The choice to focus on Lucy as the new protagonist was an obvious but poor one. Lucy was written to appeal to audiences in the same way that J.D. had: she is unimpeachably nice, well-intended, and in over her head. Unfortunately, the scripts magnify Lucy's insecurity and weirdness to such a degree that she never feels like much of a real person. Her decisions (sleeping with Cole, for example) never seem to make much sense, nor is she terribly sympathetic. In short, it's hard to root for her because she seems hopeless, stupid, and hollow. Practically anyone, though especially Drew or Denise, would have made a better lead.
4. The writers clearly ran out of ideas by this season. Longtime fans of the show would watch familiar storylines play out in familiar ways. Echoing Elliot's interactions with Phillip, Denise would be forced to deal with Cole, the rich kid whose well-connected parents make his life easy. Echoing Elliot's naive belief in the power of a heroin addict to quit, Lucy invests her faith in a hopeless drunk. Echoing Elliot's stuggle with showing compassion to a young mother, Denise learns to show compassion to a young child. Over and over again, the same stories repeat with only slight deviation. Cole's entire character, for the first half of the season, appears to be little more than a less funny version of The Todd.
With all of this said, there are a few high points.
1. Cole's character does eventually show some humanity and, in doing so, becomes far funnier. His frequent run-ins with Drew and his inadequate attempts at being a boyfriend to Lucy are some of the few truly laughable one-liners in the season.
2. Drew, Dr. Cox's new protege, is absolutely the standout member of the cast. Not only is he incredibly believable as the kind of kid Cox would actually like, but his past as a med school burnout is truly novel.
3. Turk and Kelso remain true to form and are both hilarious.
