(More customer reviews)Soup to nuts, the folks over at PBS pulled it off. They've condensed the history of the American Broadway musical into six hours, and it feels about right.
Yes yes yes, there will be hordes of folks who quibble that their "all-time most important" musical didn't make it, but that's missing the point.
You will feel as if you have a serious grasp of the development of the American musical after seeing this film. Period. Mission accomplished.
The first segments of the documentary, hosted by the ageless Julie Andrews, begin with Flo Ziegfeld, and the "Follies". One thing that hasn't been mentioned (yet) is the nice concomitant history lesson you get regarding New York, Times Square and American popular culture while absorbing this mini-series. The influence of opera (or more properly, operetta), vaudeville and minstrel shows are made abundantly clear, and are fascinating to someone like me who really had no exposure to this sort of material.
As we reach mid-century, more and more of the people talked ABOUT in the film are actually alive...and the shows discussed are ridiculously familiar to even the most "uneducated" viewer. Song after song reveals their source...standards that originated on Broadway that have become part of our cultural language.
Artistic ambition grows by leaps and bounds...from the musical "revue" to musical "comedy" to a dramatic "book" musical. Storytelling techniques through song and staging develop as fast as the geniuses on the stage, behind the stage and under the stage can think...
Some of the creators, like Sondheim, are expert at analysis and insight. They provide some great "talking head" moments about musicals that aren't theirs! By and large, the critics they used for the documentary come across as enthusiastic, overwhelmingly knowledgeable, incisive, playful...I thought as a group they were terrific, without any hint of elitism, snobbery or any number of other "stereotypes" one may have about a "New York Broadway critic."
My first audible gasp came at the end of episode five, when they play that "I Love NY" commercial from the late 70's. I remember seeing that as a kid, but the only thing that had any effect on me was the presence of Brooke Shields at the end of it.
People like Mandy Patinkin, Patti Lupone, Angela Lansbury, those "Cats" creatures and yes, I think that's Patrick Swayze in "Grease" mode...what a riot!
The most affecting portion, for me, is the last episode, for that encompasses most of my personal Broadway experience. I imagine that whatever era you feel the most affinity towards will have the same effect.
Spending 6-10 minutes per musical or producer seems criminal, until you simply appreciate the tidbits for what they are. They're like little gems. Fragments of shows that you yearn to see ALL of...
...so let me editorialize for a second.
All musicals should be filmed once with their original casts, if only for posterity. I own "Sunday In The Park With George" and "Sweeney Todd", two exemplary musicals (covered here) and nice DVD's to own. What I wouldn't give for an "Evita" (not covered here) with Lupone and Patinkin, or the original cast of "Rent". There. Editorial done.
Speaking of "Rent", the final fifteen to twenty minutes of the movie are an emotional tidal wave. Seeing Jonathan Larson's last day of work on video...watching him make his last milk shake at the Moondance Diner...and then finding out he dies right before previews, is not heartbreaking, it's heart-shattering.
That segment leads into the piece on 9/11. Somber and a little creepy, as you've seen almost six hours of the busiest intersections on Earth suddenly empty, a modern ghost town.
The filmmakers then pull off a terrific stunt. They show the post 9/11 commercial encouraging people to come back to NY. It echoes the one from over two decades prior, yet is defiant, proud and yes, a little inspiring.
A quick cut to "Hairspray", specifically to the finale which may be the single most energetic song to ever grace the boards, and then summing it all up with "Wicked", a musical I coincidentally just saw three weeks ago (and loved), made for an amazing viewing experience and I could not recommend this any more highly.
Now, for those of you who DO own this, my copy is plagued by a jittery video (with pristine audio) across all three discs. No one else has mentioned this, so perhaps my case is isolated...
One last request: please watch the rehearsal "bonus" footage with Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, working on their song from Wicked called, "For Good." Watching and listening to these two outstanding singers tentatively creating these performances, intercut with footage from the final result, sent shivers up my spine.

Marquesas is one of the two best (and most important) Survivor seasons of all time, and it's ridiculous that you haven't released it yet. I would only rank Pearl Islands ahead of marquesas in terms of watchability, unpredictability, and beautiful locations, and I'll be the first one to buy it when you actually release it. So hop to it! A lot of people are dying to watch this one again!

(More customer reviews)I need to preface this review with this note: I am a HUGE fan of "Survivor," and despite the bad reviews, I actually enjoyed the DVD of the first season quite a bit.
There's nothing very interesting in this "best of" compilation. It basically starts off with each contestant's audition tape/interview, then proceeds to one scene of something that happened to them during their stay. This is immediately followed by tribal council and their final words. Unlike the first season's video release, there are no additional challenges here, there isn't any additional nudity or profanity (other than the one of Alicia and Kimmi fighting, which we've seen on TV at least a thousand times by now), there isn't any graphic footage of Michael slaughtering the pig. In fact, even the "Symbolic Tribal Council" for Michael's departure that Mark Burnett said wasn't shown on TV but would turn up on the DVD didn't make the final cut.
What do you get as far as additional features go? There's footage from all the contestants' appearances on The Early Show. If you have a DVD Rom drive, they've recreated the official CBS web site for the show on disc - including the weekly show summaries, contestant profiles, popularity poll ratings, Outback feature, games and the Real Media video clips. This is rather interesting, since you can read about what happened during their stay in the Outback in full detail, with pictures and video supplementing the experience. However, not all of the video clips on the online site made the transfer to the disc. So basically, if you have an internet connection, logging on to the official site is still a better option.
What's good about the DVD? The transfer is brilliant. You can see actual rainfall during scenes where it didn't seem to be raining when the scenes were aired on network TV. But for me to be writing a review about a show and to have to focus on this aspect should tell you what you really need to know about this DVD. After months of anticipation, it's quite a letdown.

Chris in the Morning...the one and only DJ at the little radio station (KBHR), in Cicely, Alaska is about to give the traffic report..."Maggie O'Connell just drove down Main St, and she's going a little too fast". That about sums up the pace of this little remote town, elevation 6,572, that with the addition of Dr. Joel Fleischman, newly arrived from New York City, has a population of 215 quirky, but very lovable residents.
Dr. Fleischman(Rob Morrow) is being held against his will. Going through medical school with the financial help of the good people of the state of Alaska(as he is constantly reminded), he is now committed to serve his time...a few years of medical services in return for his Columbia University education. It won't be so bad...a condo in Anchorage, golfing on the weekends, a nice office in the city..but wait..hold the phone...instead of Anchorage, he's roped into serving his time in Cicely!
Joel is always trying everything to find some loop-hole in his contract,and you will fall more in love with the wonderful characters and the beautiful surroundings with each episode. And...you'll have lots of laughs doing it. He is like a fish out of water as this big city yuppie deals with the everyday happenings in Cicely. "I'M A DOCTOR", he says over and over, as he contends with wild animals, plumbing problems, the wilderness, and interacts in the seemingly odd lives of the residents.
The stories you will find to be some of the best writing TV has to offer.
You can't help but to become attached to the residents. From the native Indians, to the ex-astronaut, the beauty queen, and to the folks who just found themselves there, wanting to start a new life and stayed. And apparently, Dr. Fleischman can't help it either, as by the end of the first season we see he has begun to warm to them and has started to discover the beauty of his surroundings as well.
The story lines will definitely keep a smile on your face.Right from the start there is even some great romantic tension between the Doc and Maggie(the local bush pilot, who also happens to be Joel's landlady).The cast is a marvelous ensemble. It includes Janine Turner, Barry Corbin and John Corbett.
Also included are deleted scenes and outtakes. The picture is beautiful, the sound is in DD2.0 surround, and there are captions in English for those who need them(this is always a plus in my book). It may also be viewed with French or Spanish subtitles. One thing I might have liked would be an insert with info about episode placements.Most of the discs are 2 sided, and that would have made it easier to find my place when I had to leave off.
The question is, is it better to go with a multi-pack or one season at a time. The prices from the outside sellers seem to be best at this time, but you should check for the best deal on the individual seasons(adding shipping charges from outside sellers) and see which comes out cheaper(amazon vs. merchants). Sometimes if you can find a good deal on a multi-season set from a merchant, it might work out best as you will only have the one time shipping fees(same for any number of DVDs). If you are patient you can put this(or each season) in your cart and watch for a good deal.Also keep in mind there are two more season(5 and 6) and the entire series is also packages together for sale as well.
If you are a fan, you will enjoy reliving some time in Cicely with the Doc, Holling and Shelly, Chris, Ed, Maurice, Marilyn, Maggie, and one very large moose! If you have never seen this and are looking for some really fine entertainment, you will find that here...but..be careful, you may want to pack it all in and move there! This would also make a great Christmas Present for anyone who loves this show.

The Complete Seasons 1 through 4 of Northern Exposure. Stuffed with Bonus Features. Deleted scenes, extended scenes, unexposed footage and lost storylines. Joel Fleishman is fresh out of medical college, and fresh out of luck. Failing to read the fine print in his scholarship conditions, he finds he has no choice but to move to the remote and somewhat eccentric town of Cicely, in the wilds of Alaska. Once there, he is welcomed by the peculiar locals who are not keen to see him go, most especially Maurice Minnifield, the ex-NASA astronaut. Despite Joel's adamant denials, one gets the impression that he enjoys life in Cicely more than he admits.

Survivor - The Complete First Season (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)In June 2000 the landscape of American television was starkly different than it is now; nearly all shows stopped production in the summer, and aside from a traditional game show fad that was beginning to subside, all programming was scripted fiction.
Then Charlie Parsons and Mark Burnett brought to CBS an idea that, while not entirely original in concept or design, was remarkably different than anything currently being aired in the United States. It was a "reality" show, based on the hit Swedish program "Expedition Robinson", in which a group of strangers were dumped on an island and forced to fend for themselves, and vote each other off one by one. They called their version "Survivor", and it kicked off a TV revolution that does not appear to be going away.
This first season of "Survivor" established all the rules which, eight seasons later, are considered gospel by fans and contestants alike: sixteen players are divided into two tribes where they must build shelter, find food, and compete in challenges. Lose the challenges and you face Tribal Council, where the tribe votes out one of its players, be they the weakest link, the bossiest leader, or the slimiest snake. Eventually the two tribes merge into one where the challenges become individual and the field is ultimately levelled to two remaining players who are judged by their fallen peers. One is left standing to claim the million-dollar prize and the title of Sole Survivor.
With these parameters, sixteen Americans volunteered to be the initial guinea pigs, and were marooned in Borneo. Some were there for the adventure, some for the fifteen minutes of fame, and some for the money. It was, in the end, a game, and those who sought the pot of gold proved the most ambitious. One of the only rules of Survivor is that you cannot conspire to share the prize money. The Pagong tribe, consisting of mainly younger players like Jenna Lewis, Colleen Haskell and Greg Buis, were quite content with this and opted to lay back and let the cards fall where they may. But the Tagi tribe (including Rudy Boesch, Susan Hawk, and, of course, Richard Hatch) discovered early on that you could bend the conspiracy rule without actually breaking it. If they all voted together as a bloc, they'd have the numerical advantage to ensure a slot in the final four or five. You could call it an arrangement, or agreement. They called it an alliance.
The alliance strategy ultimately proved the obvious way to go, and it was perhaps that one aspect of this first season which proved the most influential on the seasons which followed it; nearly every subsequent winner of the game has used a solid alliance to get them to the top. It is not always the ringleader, not always the strongest or smartest. No one person or personality is guaranteed victory in this wholly unique game, because the game is shaped by the people who play it, and no two people are the same. Survivor was an almost instant ratings smash, and the first season finale ranks among the most watched events in recent years, and this can be attributed not to its sex appeal or entertainment quotient, but its curiosity. Random people scheming and plotting to outlast each other in a democratic process. Survivor is, at its core, a microcosm of Western society and politics, a grand sociological experiment of the Pax Americana.
The DVD release of the complete first series allows many fans who have forgotten or did not see the original Pulau Tiga castaways to experience, or re-experience, the show that they fell in love with those four long years ago. And coming with the hindsight of eight sequel seasons (season nine is being cast as of this writing, and producer Burnett and host Jeff Probst are reportedly signed through season twelve), it is a real trip to go back and watch how it all started; when grubs were considered "gross food", sloppily-edited credits gave away future events (giving berth to the wild internet "spoiling" subculture), and "alliance" was considered a dirty word. Probst is shaky here; the job is new to him and there is no edge to his attitude. It is a new experience to him, as it is to everyone else. And all the great moments are here: Greg and his "coconut phone", Sean's alphabetical voting strategy, and of course Susan's infamous "snakes and rats" jury speech, often imitated but never duplicated.
Survivor fans will need a copy of Season One. Others may want to consider this as the perfect place to start catching up on what they've been missing.

Blind Date - The Ultimate Uncensored 3 Pack (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Because that's pretty much all this DVD is...women showing their breasts during various parts of the "Blind Date" scenarios. The DVD is introduced by a woman who pulls down her top while promising "hot scenes to come." Then it is just various clips of women appearing topless (or sometimes fully naked) during various shoots...showing up for their date with their shirt open (no bra), getting naked on dares, flashing breasts during the pre-date interviews. And then just for "fun" tossing in some uncensored swearing on a couple of the date scenes. They DO actually go through one full date at the end full of sexual innuendo and nudity from the male and the female sides, culminating in the couple showing their own amateur sex film shot in just enough darkness to hide the naughtiest bits. And I don't know what the producers were thinking when they included footage of a woman doing the post-date interview while sitting on the toilet clearly demonstrating that she'd probably eaten too many...ummm...bean tacos on her date.
Oh and by the way...host Roger Lodge does not appear in the DVD, which seriously detracted from whatever little quality this had, because I think his comments might have made it a bit funnier. Then again, his refusal to appear in this DVD might have been a smart choice.

Big Brother 3 - Episodes 1-4 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)What good is a DVD set with only the first 4 episodes? I assume the others will come out later (or not, if this one doesn't sell), but then we have to spend MORE money.
The reviews for the Big Brother 4 DVD indicate that Season 4 is only 2 discs, featuring highlights only.
Why can't CBS put out a COMPLETE SET of at least ONE season? Also, don't they realize that the true fans want everything? That includes ALL the episodes AND some uncensored clips as well.

Survivor 3: Africa - The Complete Season (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I normally don't care for reviews written before a product is actually released, since they generally aren't very helpful. But how this season has not yet been released is beyond me. It may not have been very popular at the time, but if you go to just about any Survivor message board, it's clear that the fans are dying to see Survivor: Africa released on DVD as soon as possible.
I'm glad to have Palau and Vanuatu coming out later this year; I'll happily purchase any seasons they release no matter what the order. But while these seasons are good (Vanuatu is my least favorite season ever but it's still entertaining), they aren't Africa or Marquesas, two of the better seasons in my view.
I, like I'm sure most fans, feel that they should release the series in order, but if that can't happen, at least throw fans a bone here and give us the ones that we didn't just watch a year ago. Let us have the seasons we haven't seen in a long time. The sooner Africa, Marquesas, Thailand, and Amazon are released the better.

This season featured many interesting and unpredictable plot twists: an earthquake; nude sunbathing; shocking tribal council outcomes; and, of course, the winner. The DVDs' features are great. The four featurettes, along with the audio commentaries, add much insight and intrigue into what happened behind the scenes. Overall this was an excellent season of Survivor, and this DVD set is a must-have for any true Survivor fan.

Survivor Pearl Islands - The Complete Seventh Season (2003) Review

(More customer reviews)Honestly, I was too busy ogling Burton doing his thing in the Pearl Islands ;) Good heavens, that man is an Adonis!
But I have to agree, this was one of the most entertaining Survivor seasons: among others, you had Blackbeard in a tie dyed shirt (and later, a skirt) who stole shoes... a Cub Scout from the 666th level of Hell...a 250 lbs., hugely muscle-bound crybaby who was afraid of pelicans, crabs, palm fronds and WATER... and a despicably brilliant wrestler wannabe with a not-quite-dead-yet grandma.
And, of course, the Outcast twist, which drove Survivor purists in the internet forums crazy for weeks. All in all, a great season, and a worthy addition to your DVD library :)

(More customer reviews)Who ever is the genius idiot who decided to put the faces of the people eliminated on the disc they are eliminated? Did anyone ever think that some people may not have watched the show and did NOT want to know who was going to win, which was clear from the order of the faces on each disc? Once you know this the element of surprise is gone forever.. How sad...
Don't look at the pictures on front of every disk if you want surprises. If you don't care then you'll know who exactly get voted off with each disc and worse, you'll know who wins when you see them on the last sole disc.
Otherwise, this show was GREAT!! and therefore gets 4 stars, but really zero stars for ruining the surprises. Fire that putz that decided to blow it for people that have not watched it. Me, one of them.
The only other thing that was pathetic was the commentary by Lex, Kathy and Alicia who spend their valuable audio time on the bonus commentary biggering like teenagers over Boston Rob. Making ridiculous statements that Rob betrayed Lex etc. and that people were lying. Duh!!! The game is about outwitting, betraying, lying, and outsmarting everyone. Their bitterness of not winning makes me sick. What did anyone expect? That they were going to hold hands all the way to the finish line?

(More customer reviews)I mean really, Tiffany "New York" is an absolutly horrible person. Not only does she look like utter trash (the fact that she can barely keep her eyes open due to all that eyeshadow is hilarious by the way), but well...she pretty much is trash. Despite her being a despicable human being with nothing to offer to men or the human race in general, I love this show. Mainly due to the fact that it makes me feel like a better person. Oh sure, I can be as bitter as can be (and how could one not be in a world where a person like "New York" gets their own reality show?) but at least I'm not a crazed, diva with an ego the size of Texas and no substance whatsoever.
