PTU: Police Tactical Unit (2003) Review

PTU: Police Tactical Unit (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
PTU (Police Tactical Unit) is the handiwork of award-winning Hong Kong director; Johnnie To(Full-time Killer, Exiled, Breaking News). I've always read that Johnnie To is the epitome of hard-boiled cool, his films usually have that dark, gritty style with sly humor and stylized, intense gunfights. PTU's screenplay all happens in one evening, and while its premise is quite simple, with a script not as polished as "Infernal Affairs", To's signature style is still represented quite proudly.
Synopsis derived from the dvd back cover:
Set against a TsimSha Tsui that never sleeps, a stolen police sidearm triggers a suspenseful chain of events. Tracking down the missing gun before dawn, police inspector Lo (Lam Suet, Dog Bite Dog) gets his car vandalized, then he gets beaten up by street thugs. Suddenly, he is wedged between two gangs on a brink of a bloodbath. While staving off investigations by both the anti-vice squad and homicidal unit embroiled in a turf war. His only lifeline is a maverick team of Police Tactical Unit headed by a cop named Mike Ho (Simon Yam, Exiled) who helps him search for his missing gun.
PTU stands for Police Tactical Unit, the film itself uses a very simple premise. But the film is full of the usual Johnnie To signature. Characters, all threads collide in one night, high contrasting light versus dark. A natural minimalization versus a deep sense of dark humor. The film has a very cool and precise timing in its proceedings that the film is a gritty visual ballet.
The delight of watching To's films is the way the scenes unfold; questions are answered and more questions arise. Although the film does leave some questions unanswered, a clever script, great acting, humor smartly dispersed in its proceedings and the film does have a few surprises in store for the viewer; makes for very powerful cinema. There's really a very slim chance that the viewer will figure out the climax that is the beauty of Johnnie's films. Also, the magic of his film-making is that the director always finds the right actors for the role. Lam Suet hardly plays a lead role and that adds to the feeling of unknown and the viewer will have no difficulty connecting with his eccentric character. Simon Yam fits the role of over-the-top policeman Mike Ho, his methods are a bit extreme and unorthodox at times, but he does have his own sense of loyalty and camaraderie that is very effective.
PTU, truth be told, is another "buddy flick" because Johnnie likes to emphasize friendship in his films, but he adds nasty and dark characters to balance the shades of gray, black and white, good and evil. The supporting characters are given a purpose in the film's direction. No wasted opportunity, as Johnnie To maneuvers the proceedings to ultimate irony. There is a lot of dialogue and the film balances out with its excellent cinematography, which brings us to its strongest point. The film is mostly shot at night, and the awesome use of lighting gives the film a dark, atmospheric feel. In a way, the film is presented almost like a stage play, the members of PTU move around in the rain and uses simple street lamps to emphasize attention to what is happening, that under the spotlight; something relevant that may affect the lives of others is going on. I rather thought that the spotlights were meant to represent the underworld, its dealings and the rules that apply.
However, on the minus side, the film's pacing suffer a bit because there are quite a few "slow" moments and the action is almost non-existent until the climax. Now, don't take this as negative comments, the film is great the way it is; a police drama that makes a really good effort in engaging its audience that even though the film is slower paced than most of To's films, the style is immersive as the story unfolds. That is one of Johnnie To's strengths; he has a great feel for storytelling.
PTU may not be as explosive as his other films such as EXILED, The Mission and Full time Killer, but the film is definitely worth a watch. PTU is a clever return to Hong Kong crime drama, that even with its rather slower pace, the film can stand on its own as one of Johnnie To's greats.
RECOMMENDED! For fans of cop/triad films [3 ½ stars+]
Note: I own the Hong Kong release by Mei-Ah entertainment, the Dragon Dynasty release should carry an English dubbed track.

Son of the Mask (New Line Platinum Series) (2005) Review

Son of the Mask is an ugly, horrible, awful film. It's factory made with utter incompetance and has zero consistency with the original film. The CGI effects are the absolute worst, worst, WORST you will EVER, EVER, EVER see and the Mask character only appears twice for like 5 minutes in the whole film. Oh, please stay away! Stay well away from this hideous monstrosity! I'm sorry I can't say more but I have no words to aptly describe this worthless, pointless movie.

The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002) Review

The Wild Thornberrys Movie (2002)
Average Reviews:

It has to be said: although I'm a twentysomething, I still *love * to watch Nickelodeon cartoons, my absolute favourite being "The Wild Thornberrys." I've seen every episode (many more than once), and I was a little skeptical at the thought of a full-length animated movie.
Happily, the movie far surpassed my wildest expectations. The animation looks great, including the use of several CGI elements not present in the series (at some moments it reminded me of "The Lion King"). There is enough background information included (including the opening credits of the series) that newcomers won't feel left behind. The whole Thornberry gang is here, including the addition of Nigel's parents, and several new characters as well. The voice work is fantastic, including such well-known names as Tim Curry as Nigel, Red Hot Chili Peppers' Flea as Donnie, Rupert Everett as the baddie, and Marisa Tomei. The music is an eclectic mix of traditional and modern, featuring such talents as Sting, Dave Matthews, P. Diddy and Brandy, Youssou D'Nour, Sting, Baha Men, Nick Carter, Peter Gabriel and Hugh Masekela.
The story finds Eliza Thornberry, a twelve-year old with the magical ability to talk to animals, on a hunt for migrating elephants with her family, who are award-winning naturalists. Eliza's older sister Debbie is a moody, pop culture-obsessed Valley Girl who hates all the wilderness trekking. Donnie is the Bornean wild boy that the Thornberrys adopted, who is always causing trouble by making messes and stuffing things up his nose or down his pants. Darwin is Eliza's best friend, a chimpanzee with very human tastes, including his obsession with Cheese Munchies. Eliza starts out playing with the cubs of a cheetah friend, but when one of them is stolen by a poacher Eliza must rescue him. However, her parents send her to a London boarding school, where Eliza is miserable and doesn't fit in. The rest of the movie you'll have to see to believe!
There are some scary chase scenes, wounded animals and tense moments that might upset younger viewers, but overall "The Thornberrys Movie" does an excellent job of bringing the show to the big screen while remaining faithful to the humour, excellent ethnic music, and magical elements of the original series. One of the things that I love the most about the "Wild Thornberrys" is that the episodes take viewers all around the world, and the show's producers try to avoid ethnic stereotypes with the various characters, as well as adding authentic music and traditions. This is one cartoon that is witty, educational and downright fun for the whole family. There's something for everyone with "The Wild Thornberrys Movie."

Smallville - The Complete First Six Seasons (2001) Review

Smallville - The Complete First Six Seasons (2001)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A quick look at each Smallville season (including a star ranking out of five):
Season One (*****): Sets down the roots of an amazing show focusing on the younger (high school) days of Clark Kent, the future hero Superman. In this season, Clark's crush on Lana Lana and friendship (yes, friendship) with Lex Luthor are developed, as well a certain green substance that seems to wreak havoc on the town of Smallville.
Season Two (*****): This season focuses on Clark finding out his Kryptonian heritage, including a very moving guest appearance from a man of Superman movie lore. What I consider to be the best part of this season is all the allusions to the Superman cannon (or mythology)...there are multiple great moments in each episode that will make you crack a smile.
Season Three (*****): What I consider to be the best season of the show, as it explores the potential for evil in Lex Luthor and why he is so troubled. Lex's psychotic break is a high point in the series, while this is also the last season that the Clark/Lana romance remains emotional on a week-to-week level.
Season Four (****): The plot got a little weaker this season (I think the producers needed something for Lana Lang's character to do, thus the "witches" plotline), but it still introduced classic characters from the Superman comics and saw all the main characters graduate Smallville High, taking the show in a whole new direction.
Season Five (*****): This season rebounds from a weaker previous season, as it introduces a new famous Superman villain (at this point much more powerful than Lex Luthor), has an emotional special Christmas episode, and features a 100th episode that will have you reaching for the tissue box on multiple occasions.
Season Six (***): By far the weakest season of the show. Starts out with a bang, but never achieves that kind of success again until the season finale. The Clark/Lana romance is so stretched that it becomes like a soap opera, losing its emotional punch. An evil Lex and a junior Justice League forming are the highlights of this emotional bereft season.

Chasing Secrets (2006) Review

Chasing Secrets (2006)

One of my favorite movies, and the story may be applicable to many of today's families. A well-to-do mother of two privileged teenage daughters finds them too prideful for her liking, so decides to show them their roots. She takes them to the place where she grew up, and tells them about the squalor and abuse of her own childhood--something they had previously known nothing about. The story unfolds about an elderly black couple who loved her, taught her, and gave her a chance at a real life. Warm, touching, and absorbing--and they do it without putting anything in that the whole family can't watch.

Survivor Vanuatu: Islands of Fire, the ninth season of the series, is definitely among the best seasons of Survivor. This season featured many interesting and unpredictable plot twists: an earthquake; nude sunbathing; shocking tribal council outcomes; and, of course, the winner. The DVDs' features are great. The four featurettes, along with the audio commentaries, add much insight and intrigue into what happened behind the scenes. Overall this was an excellent season of Survivor, and this DVD set is a must-have for any true Survivor fan.

Supernatural - The Complete First Two Seasons (2005)

The content gets four stars because I really enjoy this show. But this is nonsensical pricing for a 2 season package. Season 1 is less than $24, and season 2 is priced at less than $38. So purchased individually it costs around $62 for the two seasons, but if you act now you can pay $107.89 and get a combo pack of the same two seasons. I guess they must use more expensive plastic to bind them together!
