(More customer reviews)This is a stunning, not-stuffy-at-all adaptation of Tolstoy's seminal work. The casting is excellent and the script is true to the story line. Anna is particularly well-cast. She's passionate, loved by men and women alike, smart and compelling to watch. The two men in Anna's life are well cast, as well. Anna's husband's character is portrayed with all of the depth that he has in the book, which is an impressive feat. The man who plays Vronsky was a perfect choice even if he is blond and in the book he is dark.
The Kitty/Konstantin parallel plot is very well done, and both characters are also very well cast. In the book, Kitty has more depth than is portrayed, but she is beautiful and charming here nonetheless.
They don't rush the plot. It is presented thoughtfully which does Tolstoy's masterpiece the due it deserves. Watch this over several nights if you want. You'll think about it all day, every day until you're done watching the whole thing.

The Old Settler (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)I first caught "The Old Settler" on TV several years back and enjoyed this comedy-drama thoroughly. I was thrilled to find out it was available on home video. Starring one of my favorite actresses, the beautiful Phylicia Rashad and her equally talented sister, Debbie Allen (who directed), "The Old Settler" is the story of a Harlem spinster in her late 40s-early 50s (Rashad) who sees a last chance at love and marriage when she meets a younger man in his early 20s named Husband (Bumper Robinson), fresh from the country, who becomes their houseguest during World War II. The spinster Elizabeth and Husband hit it off as friends right away, but soon the situation evolves into something more. At first, Elizabeth is reluctant to get involved with the young man, but Husband's charm wins her over. However, there are several folks out there who are frowning upon their relationship, and they refer to Elizabeth as an "old settler"...a popular term in the 1940s for an older woman who has never been married and has zero prospects for such.
Debbie Allen plays Rashad's skeptical divorced younger sister, Quilly, who doesn't trust Husband and disapproves of her sister's behavior when it comes to him. However, when you hear the possible reason why Elizabeth was still single at her age, you dislike Quilly somewhat and are rooting for Elizabeth and Husband to make it as a couple. But by the time the film ends, Quilly redeems herself. Plus Husband has baggage of his own: his ex, a woman his own age (Crystal R. Fox). Since moving to Harlem, she has gone from being a quiet country girl to a worldly woman who loves the nightlife. She can seemingly control Husband with an action or a word. She proves to be the catalyst in this May-December love story.
Without revealing too much more of the movie, "The Old Settler" proves one again that Phylicia and Debbie working together make an excellent team. Debbie is especially humorous...her little quips had me laughing. I highly recommend this film, and it IS available on DVD...you just have to hunt for it! Well worth the purchase.

And now comes Dark Blue, a special task force in the LAPD composed of specially-trained police officers whose job are to go undercover, infiltrate criminal organizations and bring them to justice. The team is composed of 4 police officers with unique personalities headed by Lt. Carter Shaw (Dylan McDermott), a grizzled, battle-scarred LAPD officer who is tasked with heading the task force and coming up with plans to bring down hardened criminals; Dean Bendis (Logan Marshall-Green), a no-nonsense guy who "absorbs" his role being an undercover cop and sometimes has a hard-time detaching himself from the roles his job demands; Ty Curtis (Omari Hardwick), the only married member of the team who tries to balance the demanding expectations from his job and his personal life and Jaimie Allen (Nicki Aycox) who was recruited by Lt. Carter to the team based on her past and struggles with demons of her own. The team put their lives on the line to infiltrate criminal organizations using deception, mundane and unconventional methods to get the job done. The plot is filled with a lot of action and drama that incorporates violence and human compassion at the same time. Its been a while since I have seen a cop show with this kind of story line. The members struggle with personal anxieties of their own but gets the job done at the end of the day. I Highly recommend this show for its unique plot and story line, deviating from the traditional cop shows we've seen in a very long time!

(More customer reviews)Survivor Vanuatu: Islands of Fire, the ninth season of the series, is definitely among the best seasons of Survivor. This season featured many interesting and unpredictable plot twists: an earthquake; nude sunbathing; shocking tribal council outcomes; and, of course, the winner. The DVDs' features are great. The four featurettes, along with the audio commentaries, add much insight and intrigue into what happened behind the scenes. Overall this was an excellent season of Survivor, and this DVD set is a must-have for any true Survivor fan.
