After 8 DVDs, you'll be fluent in Japanese! For sheer quantity you cant beat this box set. But I want some more "reality TV" footage, like "Wild Girls: Thailand" (ASIN B000F6YVRW) or like the Peach Island series .. but then again I have a preference for the beach, preferably with Asian beauties in bikinis on them. Peace!

Half Pint - Live in Jamaica (2003) Review

Half Pint - Live in Jamaica (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd lay good odds, there's not a reggae music lover alive who hasn't enjoyed, owned and worn out at least a dozen of Half Pint's hit tunes. The dynamic Jamaican singer, born Lindon Roberts has scored with reggae audiences for two decades now, with hits including: "Sally", "Winsome", "Level The Vibes" and the tune that many call Jamaica's National Anthem - "Greetings." Crowned the new `Prince of Reggae' by Jamaica's press, a title shared by very few other exceptional artists including Peter Tosh and Dennis Brown, Half Pint has emerged through dancehall fever and the conscious roots scene as one of reggae music's most dignified, humble and best-loved artists.
Having been covered by rock and roll's greatest band, The Rolling Stones in 1987 ("Too Rude" was officially recognized as a cover of "Winsome") audiences worldwide now have the opportunity to watch Half Pint perform his greatest hits live, during this hour-long, May 2001 Heineken Startime concert in Kingston Jamaica. Looking healthy and sounding as crisp as a biscuit, Half Pint entertains thousands of smiling faces bedecked in a fine crown of dreads and white linen threads. Backed by the ever resourceful, everlasting Lloyd Parks & We The People Band, Pint covers the stage beyond the stature of his stage name and segues in and out of fifteen numbers majestically. From the opening "Greetings", "Winsome" and "Crazy Girl" numbers, Pint warms the crowd with "Cost of Living" and "Political Fiction" before turning the heat up a notch with "Level The Vibes." From then on it's "Victory," the girl favorite, "Substitute Lover" and a host of old favorites including, "Love Zone", "Puchie Lou" and "Sally."
Bonus vibes include two music videos, "Just Be Good To Me" and "Together We All," a television `On Stage' interview with Winford Williams, a bio, discography and photographic slide show. The first music video has some good shots of Pint happily cruising in a convertible red Mercedes but is somewhat clouded by the amateurish love interludes woven into the plot. "Together we All" is much more real in comparison and visually stimulating.Bonus vibes include two music videos, "Just Be Good To Me" and "Together We All," a television `On Stage' interview with Winford Williams, a bio, discography and photographic slide show. The first music video has some good shots of Pint happily cruising in a red, convertible Mercedes, but is somewhat clouded by the accompanying amateur acting. "Together we All" is much more real in comparison and visually stimulating.
Overall, the sound quality is excellent (5.1 surround sound) and apart from some annoying disruptive edits in between song segments, the filming is good. Mid-way through the concert there are some good close-ups on stage, making up for some color saturation problems due to low light and the nature of the outdoor/evening location in Kingston. Still, with these small diversions aside, this DVD is a must-have for Half Pint and reggae lovers alike, as it offers a rare glimpse of a singer who represents all that is uplifting and righteous in today's reggae business.

At least, thats how I call it, and it's not meant as an insult. This is one of my favorite cop shows of the 90s - Barney Miller meets Hill Street Blues. Fans of 21 Jump Street will recognize Captain Fuller as Detective Brooks. I'll be crushed if the rest of the series isn't released.

I screened this film some time ago and it's a great Film Noir for fans of the genre. Roy Scheider (Jaws) is super as 'the detective' in a hitchcock-styled cat and mouse that takes place in Long Island's The Hamptons. Lust... greed... murder.... everything you need for a night of home entertainment indeed:)

Real World - Back to New York (2000) Review

Real World - Back to New York (2000)
Average Reviews:

Good Footage. Bad Price.
Let's face it, paying [this much money] for an episode and a half of footage you didn't see leaves a bad taste in your mouth. It should.
The DVD itself lacks in any -- real special features. "CAST BIOS" is simply a paragraph that was posted at Mtv.com plus a 30-sec clip from their 10 minute casting tape. The house tour is good -- yet weird to see Coral and Mike walk around talking to the camera.
Lots of bumping into the camera mishaps, bad haircuts, and parodies make this DVD actually worth buying. If you liked Lori, you get to see a side of Lori the TV show choose not to focus on.
LESS DRAMA! They actually show the cast having fun together. No fights. But...why watch Real World to see people get along?
Another problem with this DVD is too much Mike, or "The Miz", or P.Diddy, whatever his name is. A good 60% of this video is Mike running around acting stupid. Ok, funny the first time...old the second time. Cuts of Malik and Nichole seem to be small. One clip of Malik, and a un needed one of that.
The thing that gets me is they say 'You Never Saw'. The never tell you what they are going to show you that you didn't see. Mostly interviews then small 2-5 minute clips.
Footage of the Hamptons that wasn't released, Lori & Coral's musical, Mike's fake porno, and squeals of Racheal make this worth having. I wouldn't say this is a 'must' for hardcore fans, but a...'it'd be coo to have...". And for fans of the show that watched on & off, I'd advise you not to buy 50 minutes of repeated footage.

AC/DC: Plug Me In (3 disc Limited Edition) (2007) Review

AC/DC: Plug Me In (3 disc Limited Edition) (2007)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
OK, just pop in disc 1, look at the hilarious arcade computer game menu, and you know it's gonna be fun. Because AC/DC was and is always in for a bit of fun. Have a good time, while rockin' out. Judged from the content on this boxset, that is very obvious. Select "Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be" and you just can't not bang your head a little bit to the electrifying sound, which, on this track, sounds absolutely brilliant, beautifully remastered for this release. The really old clips before that sound a bit muffled, probably because of age. Further on the sound is varying between spectacular and a bit cranky.
I understand that the restoration people only can do so much, but I'm very satisfied with their clean-up work.
At last, with this release, we get to see Bon Scott's funny stage persona in full, making funny faces and winking at the cameras. In "Rocker" you can't stop laughing when Angus goes into the frozen (from shock?) audience and gets in their hair. More jokes from the band as they cut off Pete Drummond's intro speech on camera, and just kick off with "Problem Child".
The selection of songs is very good, although I suspect that some fans will miss their personal favorites.
Rounding out disc 1 are some cool vintage interview clips with the band and one long interview with a very laid back Bon Scott.
Disc 2 contains live material with singer Brian Johnson. As there are several live dvd releases out there featuring Brian, most fans are familiar with Brian's showmanship. It's nice to see some of his most early footage with the band, from 1981, including some interview clips, where he admitted that he didn't realise what he was in for or how big the band already had become.
Especially cool is the VH-1 clip where we see the band in a very small studio space as opposed to the large stages we have seen them up until now, but with a good sense of being a tight unit and comfortable with each other and just enjoying playing rock n' roll together. Rehearsal footage made during the soundcheck for this session is presented as a bonus, also very cool. We see Angus playing with a cigarette in his mouth and just jamming along. The sound starts out a bit crap, because it's a soundcheck, but later on we get to hear the instruments getting into the mix and Brian's dancing along.
The other cool extra on this disc is live footage taken from the Rolling Stones 40 Licks tour, where AC/DC probably shared the bill on that day in 2003.
Angus and Malcolm join the Stones on stage to play "Rock Me Baby", an old B.B. King blues track. Keith and Ron Wood and Angus doing his usual funny thing, just a pleasure to watch. You can tell by the look on all of their faces that The Stones and the Young brothers really had some fun there.
Disc 3 contains first of all some tracks that have been cut from disc 1 and 2. Why not put it there in the first place? I don't know. Maybe to ensure picture and sound quality with a high bitrate on those discs. Maybe to give the fans some extra stuff for buying the Collector's Edition. Among the highlights is a clip with band rehearsal footage from 1983, where we see the band playing facing each other, a set up anyone who's playing in a band will recognise. Great stuff.
Also featuring on this disc is a big part of a concert filmed in 1983 in Houston, with 9 songs in a row. A bit of a shame that they didn't put the entire gig on here.
All in all, I had a great time going through all this stuff, and I'm very pleased that live material from the Bon Scott era has been made available. I still can't believe the energy Angus has when I see him play (I myself saw AC/DC play in 1988 and 2000). The way he moves like he's on full tilt and bangs his head, as if he's the greatest fan of the band, and then play so effortlessly, amazing. Especially the old stuff is great where he looks just like a kid (and probably was).
Apart from the great dvd's you get a nice booklet, and some facsimiles from old concert tickets and backstage passes, and a concert poster from 1979.
A spectacular set for a great price. Highly recommended! And Amazon, please, don't list this as a Rolling Stones release, they're on 1 bloody track for pete's sake. This is AC/DC, man.

If you have seen any other Real World You Never Saw DVDs, then you will know what to expect with this DVD. The formula is the same. For those that don't, it's pretty much a collection of outakes that show the cast acting silly. There is no drama here.
I give this DVD an average rating because MTV never puts much effort in the DVDs. The short runtime is weak enough, but the special features are always lacking. I was hoping this time they could at least throw in the City High promo songs for this season, but instead we get the same old house tour and cast bio/audition tapes.
Like I said, it's average at best.

Well season tree on Lexx was my favorite. The whole story about heaven and hell was imaginative at worst. As it began to wrap up, the story takes us to Girl Town where we see a parody of ruling by commitee and burocrats. It is very clever and at times side splitting funny. The we move to purgatory on The Beach where stan has his judgement day. IT is the least entertaining episode of the season but it is nessasary to the unravel the upcomming Heavev and Hell, the season finally. This climax is great as it puts the Lexx crew in their worst scenario ever and fortunately pulls them out in time to throw them one final ball buster before the credits roll. A great show and a great run down the strech to a gripping final scene. have fun.

John Callahan's Quads: Freak Parade (2005)
Average Reviews:

I first saw Quads on a Canadian TV network about a Year ago in Montreal.
I believe the Canadians and the Australians were the only ones with the balls to put this show on.
I thought it was one of the funniest things I had seen on TV in North America.
It will appeal to those of us who appreciate dark humor, being that it is extremely politically incorrect and is sure to offend the majority.
I can never see an American network carrying this due to its nature and the fact that we have become one of the most uptight countries in the world when it comes to what is exceptable humor. Just Look at Mr. Stern going to Satellite.
John Callahan is an extremely funny and talented guy.
I am sure he catches a lot of flack for his work, poking fun at someone in a wheelchair is a risky premise for a show, but it is worth mentioning that in the real world Mr. Callahan is also confined to a wheelchair.
I will be pre-ordering this DVD....

The Gin Game (2003) Review

The Gin Game (2003)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
DVD and MTM do a passable job in the production of The Gin Game, but what was their greatest asset in the old Dick Van Dyke series becomes their Achilles heel here, namely their strong chemistry as a team. I just couldn't get past the feeling that these people had known each other for decades, and knew each other's every quirk. In this show, that gets in the way of the story line that revolves around two elderly strangers getting to know and dislike one another and go through the process of accepting each other (and themselves) for who they are. It's too bad that they picked this particular project for their long-awaited reunion.
I was privileged to see the incomperable Jessica Tandy and Hume Cronyn in the original stage production of this play. Strangely enough, although they also were a team of VERY long standing, they were able to overcome this issue. I understand that a VHS version of that performance is floating around. I strongly recommend seeing that, if you can.

I was doubtful about this show in the beginning- but after the first two episodes I was hooked. This is hands down the best show currently running on Nickelodeon. The animation is good, but reaches its highest point during the fight scenes- the pacing is spot on and the movements often fluid.
Another highlight of the show is the characters- all of them are well-rounded and developed. Even the antagonist has a backstory and motives.
And don't let the Asian inspiration repel you- this show isn't just "American animation trying to be anime."
I have too much to say about "Avatar" to fit it into a reasonably sized review, so let's just leave it at this: Buy it. Now.
