Lucky Strike Presents: Your Hit Parade 1950s Collectors Edition (2006) Review

(More customer reviews)I Loved this item, however, "Caveat Emptor!". This DVD was created from Kinescopes. In case you're not old enough to know what a "Kine" is, it was a process that predated Videotape. A Cameraman positioned a camera in front of a Television screen and filmed whatever was being broadcast. As you can imagine, Video quality was poor and of course, black & white but remember, That's all they had to work with! Considering these limitations and the rarity of this material, I was satisfied but you may not be. The box mentions names like Frank Sinatra and Doris Day having been associated with this show but that was on the radio. They won't be found here. The TV series starred Soprano Dorothy Collins, Canadian Mezzo Gisele Mackenzie, Leading man type Russell Arms and Hoagy Carmichael type Snooky Lanson. Very simply put, the show presented the top tunes of the day as numbers from a musical revue or Broadway stage show. The show aired once each week and so the producers were constantly under pressure to find new ways to present the songs. This could be a major problem when the song was a huge hit and refused to leave the charts. Years ago, I saw Dorothy Collins' night club act and she related: "I sang (Nat King Cole's hit) "Too Young" so many times that they literally ran out of ideas and finally had me singing it on a fire escape!". The four half-hour segments presented here are from November-December 1955 and you will see many of the songs repeated several times in front of one cheesy set or another. They tend to be MOR (Middle of the road) Pop hits. "Autumn Leaves", "16 Tons", "How important can it be?", "Suddenly there's a valley" with only two R&B hits (You may recognize one of them). LaVern baker's "Tweedle Dee" (Dorothy does a good vocal imitation of the great Ms. Baker). You won't recognize the other one (Harvey Fuqua and the Moonglows' "Sincerely" sung the McGuire Sisters way by Gisele) Good but not Soul. One episode is a Christmas episode and closes with Dorothy Collins singing live in Rockefeller Center. How rare is that? This quartet of stars were household names 50 years ago but are mostly long forgotten. Gisele would have her own one-hit-wonder with "Hard to Get" and Dorothy would go on to star in "Follies" on Broadway in the 1970's. This DVD also includes the original commercials for Lucky Strike cigarettes (singers hawking cigarettes? Dorothy even does so in a nurses uniform!) and Richard Hudnut Quick Home Permanents (hawked by Spokesmodel Julia Meade moonlighting from selling Lincolns on Ed Sullivan). The Commercials are wryly funny. Sound quality is on a par with picture quality and although I loved this, I can only recommend it to people who are old enough to remember when this was a hit TV show.

TV Commercials: The Ultimate Collection (2008) Review

Same old, same old.
The commercials on this set were downloaded from the Prelinger Archives. You don't need to fork over money for any of these, because they're readily downloadable over the web at the Internet Archives.
The worst thing with this set is that they actually managed to screw up the audio on the ads! It's tinny sounding, echo-y, and nothing like the mpegs you can download for free off the Web.
And they cut corners when they engineered the DVD. You cannot skip through any of the commercials if you've seen one; you have to fast-forward. As somebody who can burn professional DVDs, I give this outfit a big fat F for laziness.
Bottom line: Don't waste your money.

Legend of Zelda: Complete Animated Series (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)First of all, I want to say that it is truely awesome to finally have this on DVD. I was a huge fan of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show when I was a kid, and I always looked forward to Frisdays for the Zelda episodes.
The Zelda cartoons, themselves, are a lot of fun. Granted, they are a little silly and could even be considered 'cheesey' from a certain point of view, but they are what they are. They may not come across as serious as some of the video games (i.e. Ocarania of Time), but this is perfect for something targeted at kids. I was 9 when this show came out, and I loved it. And I love looking back on it now.
If I were rating just the cartoons, in-and-of themselves, and not the DVD as a whole, I would give it 5 stars.
But, as you've probably noticed, I only gave it three stars. And I have reasoning behind this.
I just picked this DVD up earlier this week as well as the recently released boxed set of the Super Mario Bros. Super Show.
The SMBSS set is the first in a series of box sets that will collect all of the non-Zelda episodes of the series. There are 24 episodes on that 4-disc set, complete with all live action segments and all cartoons (it even has the previews for the Zelda episodes).
Having bought that at the same time, I found it very disapointing that all of the complete live-action segments were not included on this Zelda release (only a handful of episodes include them). Being that I am kind of a 'completist' and wanted to have the whole 'Super Show' series in as complete of a manner as possible, I found this to be a let down.
Personally, I would have much prefered if the SMBSS set had also included the Zelda episodes complete with live-action degments, and this particular Zelda set had just been a separate release for people who only want the Zelda series, and don't care about the live action stuff or the Mario cartoons. I would have liked to have all of the episodes in order, but could have dealt with separate releases if all the live action stuff had remained intact.
If you are someone who is only interested in the Zelda cartoon, and don't care about the rest, then this will be right up your alley.
If you are a completist like me, you will be at least somewhat disapointed.However, even after taking acceptance of what content is included on this set, it still seems silly that the thing is 3 discs and costs as much as it does. During the Super Show episodes, the cartoon segements only accounted for about half of the running time, with the live action stuff being the other half. Since this only mostly includes the cartoons parts with only a few exceptions, there is no reason that this shouldn't be a 2-disc set and about 5 to 10 dollars cheaper.
It costs about the same as the SMBSS set, which is 24 complete episodes on 4 discs. This is only 13 (mostly) partial episodes when taking the live-action stuff into account. They seem to be trying to give it the appearance that you are getting more than you truely are. And it is extra disapointing since both releases are put out by the same distributor.
So, its up to each individual to decide if it is worth their money. I just wanted to put the info out there of what exactly is included in this set to not give anyone false hopes (particularly anyone who may have already bought the SMBSS set and not this one). It's certainly not a bad buy, and I do not regret buying it, but it won't fully satisfy the completists out there.
