Wow. The car ads on her are very cool. It's almost all chevy ads, but they are remarkable. The best of the bunch are from the 1930s and 1940s and shot on high end filmstock. The television ads from the 1950s are somewhat lower quality but still pack a bunch. The best part of all of this is seeing these classic cars in their era and they look beautiful. I had a great time watching it and replayed several of the ads over and over again.

This 2 DVD set allows you to imagine a time when television was just being born and lets you put yourself into the 1930s when automobiles were just becoming a part of the American landscape. It captures that era like nothing else can. Some of these advertisements – most were meant to be shown as newsreels before a feature film. were shown as newsreels before motion pictures – document the first ever usage of product placement in advertising. The History of Advertising – Automobiles 1930 to 1940 is a vintage collection of high quality movie clips and television ads highlighting Chevrolet motor company. What makes this collection of advertising films interesting is that it provides a valuable insight in to the marketing strategies implemented during the great Depression. What’s interesting about these clips is that they have a broad appeal. You can imagine film majors being just as interested in them as advertising students.A few of these films were designed to promote corporate citizenship rather than any specific model of automobile. While it forcefully demonstrates how central automobile manufacturing was to the American economy it even more strikingly shows the effects of the automobile on our landscape. Featured tracks include:•The Triumph of America •Chevrolet Leader News •Formations •When You Know •Chevrolet Leader News •The Other Fellow •Helping You Sell •All in One •Over The Waves •Tough Friends •The Trip •Chevrolet Leader News (Two Clips)Because television and even sound movies were a new phenomenon directors and writers from the best movie studios were brought in to create these ads. Most of the films included were created by the Jam Handy Organization. The DVDs work on any zone DVD player. First off, you should know that these are not television ads - unlike a lot of DVD advertising collections out there. These ads actually pre-date television.
I bought this set as part of a marketing class I'm taking and it gave me a lot of good ideas for how to sell things and get the public's attention.
You see skywriting and how billboards were designed and pre-video publicity stunts.
There isn't any commentary so you sort of have to piece together what is goign on on your own, but I didn't have any problems.
Of the bunch the skywriting clip is the best one.

The quality is not terrific and there are problems--and this stuff is in the public domain. However, this is about the only way to get this material and it is of considerable interest for animators and cultural historians.
Before DVD people didn't "restore" films much and before DVD and video tape (an era I remember too well) access to just about everything was limited to the point of just not there for you. We've gotten a bit spoiled and our expectations on media material are way too high; unrealistic even. If this material was restored the DVD would cost an exorbitant amount of money and probably wouldn't exist--restoration is expensive. One of my favorite East German science fiction films was restored by the University of Massachusetts German language department and offered for educational sale only for $150--it was the only way they could justify the expense.

See Some Of The Best Cold War Propaganda Animated Advertisements Ever Created! Put Yourself Back In Time To The "Us Or Them" Attitude Of The 1950s!This DVD is an incredible journey back in time to the Golden Age Of Capitalism. World War II had just been won, but America felt it was facing a new enemy – creeping communism. Any student of political history, advertising or film history needs to own the History Of Advertising: Animation 1950-1960 DVD!One of the most astonishing things about these animated advertising shorts is that not all of them were produced by the government. Many were produced by corporations – yet they still push the same message as federal propaganda films. Imagine big corporations pushing political agendas today! It just wouldn’t happen. These films are a fascinating lesson in how industry and government worked together to create the worship of money and productivity!

TV Commercials: The Ultimate Collection (2008) Review

4 words:
Same old, same old.
The commercials on this set were downloaded from the Prelinger Archives. You don't need to fork over money for any of these, because they're readily downloadable over the web at the Internet Archives.
The worst thing with this set is that they actually managed to screw up the audio on the ads! It's tinny sounding, echo-y, and nothing like the mpegs you can download for free off the Web.
And they cut corners when they engineered the DVD. You cannot skip through any of the commercials if you've seen one; you have to fast-forward. As somebody who can burn professional DVDs, I give this outfit a big fat F for laziness.
Bottom line: Don't waste your money.
