(More customer reviews)From the creators of the venerable British sitcom "Are You Being Served?" comes this 85-episode collection: the continuing adventures of "humble cafe owner" Rene Artois (Gorden Kaye) who is constantly dragooned into aiding the desperate efforts of Resistance fighters against the Nazis in wartime France. Like "Are You Being Served?," the scripts are full of double entendres, single entendres, farcical pursuits and intrigues, crazy comedy props, and plenty of verbal and visual jokes, delivered by a solid ensemble cast. In the many bawdy situations where a broader comedian would mug shamelessly, Gorden Kaye's sheepish subtlety scores every time.
This is a serial, so the episodes must be watched in sequence to follow the insane storyline. Among the plot points running through the series are a frenzied hunt for a missing painting, the equally frenzied concealment of two clueless British airmen, pompous posturing by military officers and Gestapo spies, the tunneling INTO a prisoner-of-war camp, clandestine romances forced upon Rene by anyone in skirts (even the Resistance girls can't resist Rene, and one of the German officers has eyes for him, too), everybody adopting cross-dressing disguises at one time or another, and any number of wild schemes to harass and hinder German battle plans, involving ridiculous and ingeniously engineered props.
This viewer had seen the first three dozen episodes on public television before the station discontinued the series, so it was great to see so many more episodes. This 19-disc collection presents all 85 half-hours, and there isn't a lemon in the bunch. Even when the jokes are predictable, it's the reactions of the various characters that often carry the comedy. The series survived many personnel changes on both sides of the cameras, and viewers will probably become fans who will find their own favorite characters and portrayals.
There are many "Allo, Allo"-related bonus features in the DVD set, including an episode of "Blankety Blank" (the British "Match Game") and a documentary about the series as a whole (on disc 16 -- DON'T watch it until you've seen all 19 discs, because the documentary gives the series' ending away).
HIghly recommended for comedy fans, and delightfully habit-forming viewing: we enjoyed watching an episode almost every night for three months.

(More customer reviews)I like watching this with a glass of wine late at nite in the dark. No one will watch it with me and that is ok.It is a spoof of ww 2 occupied france. The jokes are broad and the stereotypes are over the top but I don't care it is funny in the silliest way. Everybody in france seems to want to get down rene's pants. ( Which is so ludricrus and hilarious because rene is bald, chubby and kinda whiney.Even a certian german officer who acts so gay you wonder if it is a put on to get ahead constantly comes onto him. Some of the gags get old like the bad dressing in drag, but most do not. Like Officer crabtree butchering the french language .

(More customer reviews)The series has had it's ebbs and flows in quality. Season Five, Part One has to be the funniest season so far! I missed the departure of a couple of characters in season three, but the show was back in stride with this season. It is very very funny. The bizarre Herr Flick episodes have be trimmed and changed to make them funnier and less redundant. Jack Haig shines as LeClare and there are some very funny scenes where his schtick is stolen by a couple of the main characters. Marner and Siner shine in this season as well. The newer characters have settled in and add to the fun and enjoyment. I recommend it!

(More customer reviews)Here it is... the final series of one of my favorite imports and a surprisingly funny sitcom about the German occupation of France during WW2.
While I feel the series suffered a bit following series 6 after Gorden Kaye suffered serious head injuries in a car crash and one half of the original writing team, David Croft, handed off his portion of the writing duties it still managed to bring hilarity to the war effort.
Before the meat, a bit of commentary:
With the total disrespect shown to fans by studios these days with many stalled, incomplete, or abandoned TV series in the marketplace it is refreshing to see a classic completed, especially a BBC series which tend to be higher priced than standard domestic fare.
As anyone who is looking at this item is surely a true fan I'll not bore you with how good the series is. You already know. So here is what I know about this release.

Meanwhile, Herr Flick undergoes plastic surgery to avoid capture by the Allies, General von Klinkerhoffen hatches another fool-proof plan to assassinate Hitler, and no one can remember where they have hidden the painting of the Fallen Madonna with the Big Boobies. As normalcy recedes further and further into the distance, Michelle plots an escape via the annual fishmonger's parade, and Lieutenant Gruber desperately tries to fix his little tank. Episode summaries:
Gone with the Windmill - As the war draws to an end, Gruber and von Strohm return from Spain, their escape attempt having failed. René agrees to hide the painting, still missing a boobie, and suggests the Germans fake their own kidnapping by hiding in the windmill, which von Klinkerhoffen has earmarked for target practice. Meanwhile, a heavily bandaged Flick tells Helga he has had plastic surgery to avoid capture by the Allies.
A Tour de France - Captured by the Communists, René is looking for a way to escape. Meanwhile, everyone else assumes he has been killed in the windmill explosion. Flick and von Smallhausen are attempting to trick Edith by pretending to be British.
Dead Man Marching - Renés backside is full of buckshot after being mistaken for an elk while escaping from the Communists. He now must lay low or face being re-captured, but in the end decides the safest plan is to turn himself in to the Germans, faking amnesia from the explosion.
Tarts and Flickers - Michelle tries to send important microfilm to England via homing pigeon. When that fails, she decides on using a motorised float in the annual Nouvion Fishmongers Parade. Flick and Von Smallhousen pose as waitresses to search for the painting.
A Fishy Sendoff - It is the day of the annual Nouvion Fishmongers Parade, but von Klinkerhoffen, Gruber and the Colonel are heading to Berlin on a most special mission: to assassinate Hitler with an exploding picture frame.
A Winkle in Time - The Allies have landed, and the Germans are in trouble. While a disguised Gruber and von Strohm attempt to mingle with the villagers, Flick and von Smallhausen try to reach the ocean in a mini-submarine via a secret tunnel under the town... Nouvion, present day. A Mercedes pulls into the square where there is a statue of René, the war hero. Old chauffeur von Strohm opens the door for the rich owners Helga and Gruber (now an international art dealer). Inside the cafe is René's young adopted son. René is being assisted to the toilet by Yvette. Upstairs, an older Mimi attends to the bedridden Edith. René is explaining that he never found the painting, when an accident suddenly reveals its hiding place. The painting is now worth millions, but will everyone get their share?
