Coupling - The Complete Third Season (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)Coupling is one of my very favorite shows for several reasons: the terrific actors, the solid scripts, and it simply makes me laugh more than most other sitcoms. This season features a lot of farce and new Jeffisms (such as "porn jelly" and "secret listeners"), but there is also more of an emotional depth given to all of the characters. I can't review the DVD itself yet, but if the special features and presentation are anything like they were on the second season DVD, that would be fabulous. Here is a recap of the seven episodes of this season:
1.) Split - Picking up where season two left off, we follow Steve and Susan (in a split-screen format) after their breakup. The men and the women head to their own versions of the "Temple of Woman", before Steve and Susan reunite again.
2.) Faithless - Jane falls for a handsome co-worker at her radio station, James, the host of a Christian program. Meanwhile, Jeff tries to figure out whether his pretty co-worker Wilma likes him as a friend or as something more.
3.) Unconditional Sex - Wilma admits her sexual attraction to Jeff, despite her having a boyfriend and him being involved with Julia. Jeff tries to find a way to stay faithful to Julia without offending Wilma, and confusion ensues.
4.) Remember This - Patrick shows up at Sally's apartment at 3am, believing Sally had called him to get rid of a spider. It turns out that he had dreamed about the phone call, and he interrups her night with another man. This later prompts Sally and Patrick to reminisce about their first meeting. They describe two very different versions of what happened to their friends.
5.) The Freckle, The Key, and The Couple Who Weren't - Jeff and Julia's kinky evening is interrupted by the sudden return of Julia's ex-boyfriend Joe; Steve and Susan discuss "nether freckling"; Jane is dismayed when she learns surprising details about her new boyfriend, James.
6.) The Girl With One Heart - Much to Steve's horror, Susan removes the lock on their bathroom door. Later, Patrick brings his new girfriend to Susan and Steve's dinner party, which leads to a misunderstanding between her and Sally.
7.) Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps - Sally thinks she's pregnant, so she asks Susan and Jane to take pregnancy tests together with her. The tests get mixed up, but one of them is positive, meaning that one of them is pregnant. Meanwhile, Jane and Jeff bond over their failed relationships with James and Julia, respectively, and Patrick and Sally finally address their feelings for each other.
If you haven't seen the first two seasons, I urge you rush out and buy them. But this season is even better, and I can't wait for this DVD to be released.

'Allo 'Allo The Complete Collection (2008) Review

(More customer reviews)From the creators of the venerable British sitcom "Are You Being Served?" comes this 85-episode collection: the continuing adventures of "humble cafe owner" Rene Artois (Gorden Kaye) who is constantly dragooned into aiding the desperate efforts of Resistance fighters against the Nazis in wartime France. Like "Are You Being Served?," the scripts are full of double entendres, single entendres, farcical pursuits and intrigues, crazy comedy props, and plenty of verbal and visual jokes, delivered by a solid ensemble cast. In the many bawdy situations where a broader comedian would mug shamelessly, Gorden Kaye's sheepish subtlety scores every time.
This is a serial, so the episodes must be watched in sequence to follow the insane storyline. Among the plot points running through the series are a frenzied hunt for a missing painting, the equally frenzied concealment of two clueless British airmen, pompous posturing by military officers and Gestapo spies, the tunneling INTO a prisoner-of-war camp, clandestine romances forced upon Rene by anyone in skirts (even the Resistance girls can't resist Rene, and one of the German officers has eyes for him, too), everybody adopting cross-dressing disguises at one time or another, and any number of wild schemes to harass and hinder German battle plans, involving ridiculous and ingeniously engineered props.
This viewer had seen the first three dozen episodes on public television before the station discontinued the series, so it was great to see so many more episodes. This 19-disc collection presents all 85 half-hours, and there isn't a lemon in the bunch. Even when the jokes are predictable, it's the reactions of the various characters that often carry the comedy. The series survived many personnel changes on both sides of the cameras, and viewers will probably become fans who will find their own favorite characters and portrayals.
There are many "Allo, Allo"-related bonus features in the DVD set, including an episode of "Blankety Blank" (the British "Match Game") and a documentary about the series as a whole (on disc 16 -- DON'T watch it until you've seen all 19 discs, because the documentary gives the series' ending away).
HIghly recommended for comedy fans, and delightfully habit-forming viewing: we enjoyed watching an episode almost every night for three months.

Lovejoy - Season 4 (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)Please don't mistake this as a criticism of the program it is only an opinion on the lack of quality product one gets for ones hard earned quid.
I and the family have loved this program since it was first broadcast on the BBC back in the early 1990's. The cast of characters and the scenic beauty of East Anglia are terrific. The TV production is almost as good as the books. This is possibly the best season of the series. The rough edges are polished and the interaction of the actors is superb and the writing is at its peak.
The only reason I cannot rate this 5 stars is due to the lack of re-mastering. For $51.99 plus S+H, one would think this wonderful program would have been restored. Instead it's like watching BBC Gold re-runs on the telle on a stormy East Anglia night. Scratchy picture, hissing sound track, and faded colour. Come on, with today's technology there is no reason for this program to be presented in Dolby Digital 2.0 mono and a faded image cut to fit the TV screen. For $52.00 I should get something fully restored to its original glory presented in Dolby Digital 5.0 at a minimum.
I will buy this regardless of its lack of quality and cherish the entertainment value as I eagerly await the release of season 5.

(More customer reviews)We are at Series 5 of 6 with our favorite antiques dealer. Ian McShane's Lovejoy is one of the richest characters in television. He is always looking for the next score with the help of his two side kicks Tink and Eric. And this season he has a new love interest.
Series 5 has the following 14 eisodes:
Pig in a Poke - Lovejoy buys a set of James Gillray prints only to find out they are copies. Eric finds a stolen statue at a house of Lady Jane's friend. (Tony Winner Brian Stokes Mitchell guests)
Who's the Fairest of them All - Lady Jane asks Lovejoy to help her old dance teacher to sell a mirror. Then she drops a bombshell - Lord Feldsham is bankrupt and they are selling the Hall. And she is leaving.
A Going Concern - Lovejoy minds Feldsham Hall until it is sold. But seeing an oportunity, he uses the Hall as a showroom. Enter new love interest Charolette Cavandish of Cavandish Auction house.
The Kakiemon Tiger - Lovejoy is once again in financial trouble so he takes on a new apprentice - Beth. (James Nesbitt and Colin Salmon guest)
Three Men and a Brittle Lady - Charlie Gimbert buys a fake porcelain statue and Lovejoy catchs up with the forger. Charolette's former boyfriend arrives from NY and asks her to move to Paris.
Ducking and Diving - Eric and Tink take a holiday at Eric uncle's pub. Lovejoy shows a pair of tourists around the antique stores but he also has an Welsh dresser to sell. Eric decides to leave the business.
Stones of Destiny - When a Celtic cross is stolen from Charolette's auction house, Charolette and Lovejoy chase after the theif. Lovejoy makes his first overture to Charolette.
Poetic License - Charolette is asked to sell some items for a friend and she asks Lovejoy to value the items. While at the nursing home, attempts on Lovejoys life are made. (Susan Fleetwood guests)
The Peking Gun - Lovejoy is asked to value some posessions of a colonial widow. Lovejoy discovers a chinese cannon but it has significance with a chinese tong. (Burt Kwouk guests)
Goose Bumps - Charlie tries to aspire to higher levels and hosts a Dog Show and Wildlife Auction at Felsham Hall. He asks Carolette to act as hostess. But it is Lovejoy who winds up invited to dinner. (Pete Postlethwaite and Freddie Jones guest.)
Swings and Roundabouts - A friend of Lovejoy's asks him to sell a pair of candlesticks. But they turn out to be stolen. Meanwhile a friend of Charolette's wants the travelling fair's carousel. (Guest James Carroll Jordan)
Never Judge a Book by its Cover - Lovejoy discovers a rare bible but when the owner's brother opposes the sale, Lovejoy suspects something is afoot. (Richard Briers guests)
The Lost Colony - Lovejoy travels to the Carolinas to meet up with some American relatives and recover some lost properties. (Barbara Barrie, Ken Kerchival and John Gielguld guest)
The Price of Fish - Lovejoy and Charolette are invited away for the weekend - of course to value something. Tink and Beth battle Charlie Gimbert.
This was another great season of Lovejoy -- even with the cast changes.
