Manchild - The Complete First Season (2002) Review

(More customer reviews)I was perusing the "unusual" today, in search of a comfort video to nurse me through the balance of a particularly violent Sunday hangover. I picked up this compilation of Manchilds first season, and was snagged by the cover which advertised "Sex In The City for men". "Ahkay", I groaned, figuring something half as entertaining would make a fine accompaniment to drawn blinds and a trough-full of Spinach Artichoke Dip.
Dragged myself home, popped this thing in with low expectation, and was immediately, and very pleasantly, surprised.
I watched the entire 2 DVD's in one sitting, and laughed (painfully considering the headache) the entire way through. The characters are, much like Sex In The City, leaning over the cliff of believably, but sufficiently real to connect with. All four of them roughly 50, all of them successful, all but one of them are single. Philosophically "light", but nonetheless intriguing.
Where Sex In The City seemed to be about four young women growing up and finding a place in their lives for family, Manchild is more about what's on the other side of family..."what then?".
I do think it appropriate however to issue a yellow "Girlfriend/Wife alert", there are numerous "men issues" that these energetic 50 year olds aggressively and often unsensitively tackle. I watched with my girlfriend, and would occassionally glance over to see her, mouth agape in horror that men might ever think or do such things.
For those that love SITC, you have cause for celebration, this is a male reflection of that show; for everyone else who are looking for a good laugh (or to successfully nurse a hangover), pick this DVD series up. You won't be dissapointed.

Lexx: Series 3 V-2 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)The first season is the best but the second season is quite good. Pay attention to the other "real people" that have reviewed it. First of all LEXX was out long before Farscape so the ridiculous line about sound familiar is out of context. LEXX is unique in its approach to SciFi. It is far more graphic in violence and erotic behavior than other series you will see. I have purchased the first two seasons on DVD since I think they are the best. The rest are worth seeing but I am not sure about buying.

As the Godfather saga was the view of the mafia from the executive suite, this series is a complex tale of the mafia from the working man's point of view. If you've never watched this show, you're in for an extended treat. Yes, there is violence and nudity, but it is never gratuitous and is needed to contrast Tony Soprano, the thinking man's gangster, with the reality of the life he has been born to and, quite frankly, would not ever have left even knowing how so many of his associates have ended up. Tony Soprano can discuss Sun Tzu with his therapist, then beat a man to death with a frying pan in a fit of rage, and while dismembering and disposing of the body with his nephew, take a break, sit down and watch TV while eating peanut butter out of the jar, and give that nephew advice on his upcoming marriage like they had just finished a Sunday afternoon of viewing NFL football. Even Carmella, his wife, when given a chance for a way out, finds that she really prefers life with Tony and the perks that go with it and looking the other way at his indiscretions versus life on her own. If you followed the whole thing, you know how it ends. If you didn't, trust me you've never seen a TV show end like this.
I'm looking forward to seeing all 86 episodes together over a short time period versus the very annoying long time periods between seasons that we had after the first three seasons. Remember, it took eight years (1999-2007) for the show to go from season one to season six.

Surviving Gilligan's Island (2001) Review

(More customer reviews)This show was perfection. Anyone who enjoys the classic show Gilligan's Island MUST see this Documentary. The re-enactments were great. Much better then just showing pictures and old clips. It shows how the show was created having look alike characters play the parts of the original cast. These actors were very entertaining. Especially when I wasn't too excited about seeing new actors filling the roles. But it turned out to be perfect. The DVD menus and extras are themed very closely to the show and make for some fun amusement. This just makes me want all 3 seasons from the original series on DVD even more. I cannot wait for that day to come. All Gilligan Island lovers must own this DVD.

Andromeda Season 1 - Vol. 4 (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)The Andromeda DVDs have been somewhat of a disappointment to me, this one, 1.4 more so then the other. The episodes themselves are in wonderful quality and are the main reason I bought the DVD.
However the limited number of episodes on each disk is appalling. And the extras on it, doesn't even come close to making up for the lack of them. The bloopers were short, and were mostly of Kevin Sorbo. The behind the scenes of the alien makeup seemed promising, however was less then five minutes. And then there was the fact that I could never find the commentary for "Fear & Loathing in the Milky Way."
So my advice to you is, if you are truly an Andromeda fan, then this is something for you. But be prepared for disappointment.

(More customer reviews)"The Last Detective: The Complete Collection," comprising all 17 episodes of this superior British television mystery series, is now becoming available in the United States for the first time. The series, a subversive police procedural, was made by Granada for the United Kingdom's Independent Television (ITV). It made its debut on British broadcast television in February 2003, and has never been seen on broadcast TV here, which is our loss, as it is an excellent, character-driven production that offers a light-hearted blend of mystery and comedy similar to that of Poirot Investigates: Eleven Complete Mysteries;Blue Murder: Set 3; or Rosemary & Thyme - The Complete Series. The collection comes at a value-packed price, and offers as a bonus, the 1981 treatment, starring Bernard Cribbins, that tells the same story as this series' pilot.
It's based on the "Dangerous Davies" novels of Leslie Thomas. The veteran, highly thought of, everyman looking Peter Davison (Tristan in All Creatures Great & Small - The Complete Series 1 Collection), stars as the title character, Detective Constable Davies (and it's quite a disgrace for an older man to be only a constable!) He works in the totally unimportant, out of the way, North London precinct of Willesden. And he's only the last detective in that he's the last detective his boss would assign to any case, had he his choice in the matter. So Davies gets the least promising cases: yet, in his plodding fashion, he generally does get his man - or woman, as the case may be.
Emma Amos plays his sexy wife, Julie: in the complete collection you will see their relationship go through some changes, as she first throws him out, then takes him back. Sean Hughes, (the guy from Eejit Records in The Commitments (Two-Disc Collector's Edition), plays his freeloading, quirky chum, Mod: we see him go through quite a few career changes in the complete collection, too. Rob Spendlove plays Detective Inspector Aspinall, the station house's tough supervisor. Charles De'Ath as DS Pimlott and Billy Geraghty as DS Barrett add greatly to the flavor of the cop shop; and we get to see the three of them going through changes too. Various well-known actors, such as Sian Philips, Norman Wisdom,David Threlfall and Susan Woordridge, guest star in supporting, but still meaty, roles.
The series manages to be witty and entertaining, yet still intellectually satisfying, with a minimum of onscreen violence. Cinematography is fine, and it's firmly grounded in its North London location. For better or worse, its actors have been encouraged to use that locale's flavorful accent: some may have trouble with it. But it really is a pleasure getting to see all the episodes in sequence, and seeing the characters develop. British mystery lovers: this one's for you.

(More customer reviews)Last year HBO released the complete series of this ground-breaking show with the very high pricetag we've come to expect from any HBO original series on DVD. According to the press release, a year later, HBO wants to make this collection more available to consumers with new compact packaging and a lower price point. I continue from the press release:
The new package is still book style, but of a vastly different sort - it opens up from a split down the center in a gatefold fashion, and discs slide in from the side. Speaking of discs, HBO informs us that all of the DVDs from the previous Complete Series set will be included, with all the bonus material found on them. However, the extra soundtrack CD discs will not be packed in with the revised collection. Still, the new list price is a hundred dollars lower, which certainly good news for any fans who perhaps couldn't afford last year's model.
End of press release. The bottom line on this is we are paying one hundred dollars less to give up 2 music CDs and in exchange get packaging that should not enable so many scratched discs. Andromeda (Volume 1) (2000) Review

(More customer reviews)The dialogue in the first ten minutes "There are too many of them!" and "It's our only chance (hope?)" peg the script writer as a student at the George Lucas School of Scriptwriting (correspondence only). The starship (who is a machine, let us not forget)wants to look like a sexy babe with a lot of cleavage showing prominently. Would that 'look' really appeal to a machine - wouldn't it want to be metallic and oily? Besides, the 'living ship' idea is done so much better in Farscape. So I wonder if I have wasted my money.
However, Kevin Sorbo is a surprise - a better actor than our lad in Farscape (who only looks sober and/or confused most of the time). Sorbo's athleticism adds a reality to the fight scenes and he seems totally dedicated to his dream of reuniting millions of worlds (unrealistic as that seems in the face of our inability to unite even a portion of our planet).
Tyr is tremendously sexy, especially when given a chance. And the other characters are off-beat enough to be interesting. Except for the furball - they really should have gone to see Brian Henson on that one - the mask looks like a mask - it never moves. And the spraying is inconsistent with his Zen-like character (who seems more Catholic with his confession and absolution stuff - poor fellow). He won't kill anyone, but he will torture them? Come on.
Are we still going to be riding motorcycles with windscreens 12,000 years from now? Will people from another planet be quoting the Bible about "Reaping the whirlwind" - wouldn't they be quoting Neitzsce instead (sp?)? The anachronisms boggle.
So I bought the next set. So I'm hooked anyway. So sue me.

Sharpes - Rifles Collection Set (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)I had not read any of Sharpe's books before watching the series. However, I love British TV drama and novel adaptations, and I love the period in which Sharpe's adventures are set, so after reading the reviews in Amazon.co.uk, I decided to give it a try. And now I'm hopelessly hooked! All the actors' performances are wonderful, but Sean Bean's is simply stunning. The story is very respectful to the people who lived in Spain in those times, both those who were for and against the French (I'm Spanish. I know), and it is even respectful to the French enemy. The plot is a mixture of adventure and spy story, with quite a bit of criticism of the British class system thrown in.This is as good as a historical novel can be (and I've read quite a few)especially because of the feeling you get that the characters belong to the period in the way they think and the way they act. In fact, it would answer the question What were all those handsome officers from Jane Austen's novels doing when they were not dancing with her heroines?. This is the other side of the same story, without contradicting it. The hero,Sharpe, belongs to the "dregs" of society, he is "scum", although he is more human and braver than the petty officers who have purchased their comissions and who are, otherwise, so elegant and so good at dancing with Austen's heorines. I am also beginning to read all the Sharpe's novels and I love them. Bravo Sharpe! Stand and Fight!

(More customer reviews)"LIFE OF RYAN" is an MTV series created by Joey Carbone (Carbone Entertainment) which the first two seasons aired on MTV and the third season is featured on this complete series on DVD.
The series focuses on the life of pro skateboarder Ryan Sheckler, the youngest winner of the X-Games at the age of 13 and now focusing on the teenager from age 16-18, as he tries to become champion again.
Unfortunately, things are not as simple for the life of Ryan as his parents Gretchen and Randy have gotten into a divorce which both parents try to be civil but it for Ryan, it has hurt him emotionally.
As he tries to live life with his younger brothers Shane and Kane and his mother/manager Gretchen in surfer town San Clemente, he tries to have a relationship with his father who has found a new girlfriend. Helping Ryan deal with life are his best friends Casey, Tony, Taylor and Mitch. But throughout the series, Ryan struggles with divorce, his mother as his manager, his relationship with his father, his friends and also trying to find a girlfriend, managing multiple businesses and just dealing with his fandom and his "haters" while pursuing his quest to win another X-Games.
"LIFE OF RYAN: THE COMPLETE SERIES" features all three seasons on DVD broken up onto three discs.
SEASON 1:
1. CHASING CAMBRIA - Ryan likes a girl named Cambria but not sure if she digs him. Both Ryan and his best friend Casey have their first holiday with their parents now divorced.
2. 5TH WHEEL - Ryan spends time with his younger brother Kane. His father Randy is having a big party for Kane but his mother who attends, finds it hard to see her ex-husband with another woman and both Ryan and his mother reminisce of the past birthdays and how hard the divorce is for his mother.
3. CARELESS WHISPERS - Ryan goes to visit his father Randy and his new girlfriend Kristy but it shocks him when his girlfriend tries to get close to him and hug him and the more he thinks about it, it stresses him out more.
4. RAISING KANE - Ryan goes on a date with Tony's ex-girlfriend Julia and not sure if his best friend approves.
5. X-TREME DISTRACTIONS - It's time for the X-Games and it surprises him when he finds out that his father Randy and his girlfriend Kristy is coming. This ticks him off. Meanwhile, Ryan starts to hang out more with Tony's ex-girlfriend Julia.
6. HE SAID, SHE SAID - Ryan's mother is now moving on with her life and is going on her first date since divorcing and it makes Ryan feel a little uneasy.
7. DOWN GOES RYAN - Ryan breaks his arm during a fall during a competition.
8. HOME AND AWAY - Ryan wants to get his own house and get away from his family.
SEASON 2:
1. DON'T GO - Ryan and his mother and brother will have dinner with his father and new girlfriend. But things are made much more stressful as Ryan's father and mother are going back to court.
2. MY BROTHER'S KEEPER - Ryan is getting closer to Kayla. Meanwhile, he tries to coach his brother Shane. Shane feels a bit of pressure and stress because he is the brother of pro skater Ryan.
3. HOUSTON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM - Ryan is upset when he wants to talk to his mom but she's always in manager mode.
4. SHECKLER, INC. - Ryan's business endeavors is going great and now he can expand on his own business. He also misses his girlfriend Kayla who has been gone for two weeks.
5. AND YOU JUST MIGHT BE THE ONE - The pro skater friends of Ryan worry that he may not be focusing on his skating and focusing a bit much on his new girlfriend. Kayla returns and Ryan can't wait to go out with her.
6. ODD MAN OUT - Ryan and his father Randy go on a father and bonding trip to the gun range.
7. MAN'S BEST FRIEND - Ryan wants a dog but his mother is against it. So, Ryan wants to see if he can raise one, so he borrows Tony's dog for a week.
8. SKATE IN HEAVENLY PEACE - It's Christmas time and Ryan is happy to have family and friends together. But unfortunately, he can't bring his father because his mother's boyfriend is coming and it might be too weird and it's stressing him out.
9. PARTYING WAYS - Ryan's friends have a surprise party for Ryan and while his girlfriend Kayla was important in planning the party. Ryan ends up not talking to her at the party (since he's greeting friends he hasn't seen for a long time). Ryan feels he can't give his girlfriend the time because of his career and feels he needs to breakup with her.
10. SINGLE LIFE - Ryan's now single. And so is his father Randy. Both go on a father and son bonding trip to Las Vegas.
11. NEW BEGINNINGS - Ryan finds out that Casey and Taylor have broken up but is more upset that his new roommate and best friend never told him about it.
12. PAST, PRESENT & FUTURE - Ryan is upset with Casey and Mitch for looking at his phone and assuming that he may be trying to go for Taylor.
13. CRACKS IN THE CREW - The breakup of Casey and Taylor is affecting the crew and now Ryan considers ditching his best friend Taylor.
14. TONY'S TEST - Ryan wants to know if Tony is dependable as a roommate, so as a test, Ryan invites him to travel to Austria. Will Tony pass the test?
15. FINALLY ON MY OWN - Ryan's mother and father are communicating and also Ryan gets stressed because his mother is trying to decide how her son's new home should be painted.
SEASON 3:
1. MY HOUSE, MY RULES - Ryan has moved into his new house but he starts to have many parties and everyone invited. With many drunk teens who eventually get into fights, break a hole into Ryan's house and even Tony leaving his used condoms in the ground, this episode is probably the most edgy of the series.
2. ADDING INSULT TO INJURY - Ryan builds a skatepark in his warehouse and while attending a tournament in his area, the audiences boo him.
3. BUSINESS BEFORE PLEASURE - Ryan is holding a celebrity golf tournament and his manager warns him of his friends attending and getting out of hand. But Ryan doesn't think his friends will cause any trouble...Will they?
4. RIGHT HERE, RIGHT NOW - Ryan Sheckler competes in X-Games 14 and tries again for a gold medal.
5. MODEL BEHAVIOR - Shane wants to become a pro skater and Ryan talks to his parents in giving Shane a chance to travel on tour with pro skaters for three weeks.
6. WHAT'S NEXT? - Ryan finds out that Casey and Mitch have been accepted to a college in Colorado and are moving in two weeks. For Ryan, this is devastating and a life changing experience.
VIDEO & AUDIO:
What I enjoy about "LIFE OF RYAN" are the various shots of San Clemente, outdoors, sunshine and it really helps the picture quality. With many reality TV series, when indoor scenes are captured, the amount of noise is just enormous. So, it was pretty cool to watch the series and notice how cool and vibrant the colors are and overall, looked good.
Audio quality features Dolby Digital stereo and dialogue is clearly heard. If anything, the series is front-heavy and there is a lot of utilization of music, thus you get a good dialogue/music driven audio track.

"LIFE OF RYAN" is really entertaining and if anything, I think the film really showcases the personal life of pro skater Ryan Sheckler. Showing that he's just a normal teenager who experiences the same emotions, stresses out and has real-life problems like every teen out there.
Granted, Sheckler is a multi-millionaire, has several businesses and is quite successful but the series is not so much about his skateboarding competitions and business life but mainly about how this athlete is dealing with his parent's divorce, dealing with his relationships with family and friends but how he has to live these separate lives of being a professional and having to be a regular teen and learning that for him, it's difficult.
But the heart of the series is his relationship with his mother and father. His mother Gretchen is a manager that wants to make sure his son knows what his schedule is and what he has to prepare for but during these tough times, when he needs his mother, she's often in manager mode and it cause a bit of friction between the both of them.
As for his father Randy, the divorce has hurt him financially and emotionally. And as tough as he looks as a businessman and biker, he cares about his son a lot and gives him advice. But because his father is more businesses minded and logical, it causes some friction between father and son as well.
If anything, the problems that Ryan goes through is trying to be the middle man between his father and mother. While dealing with the stress of competition and high school life, it's more than a teen can handle and it shows on camera.
Ryan seems to stress out with each episode and granted, he has every reason to. And you can see how that worry over his personal relationships with family has somewhat transcended into his relationships with friends, which are like family to him, it's understandable why his life seems quite dramatic on TV.

(More customer reviews)Love the Flintstones. Have been waiting for a nice priced complete set. Unfortunately the paper sleeves for the discs WILL end up scratching the dvds. Im sure some will be scratched upon purchase . So I will get the single sets. I recommend people buy those instead. Much nicer cases and only about about $15.95 more (105.94 for all the single sets) than that the silly looking box the complete set comes in. Course Im still giving it four stars for the episodes.
UPDATE: The regular sets have now been put back to their regular price of around $32. So its not so good a deal anymore. I guess you could wait for them to be on sale again or just take your chances with the complete set. Plus theres no new bonus material so the only thing your getting EXTRA is the UGLY ORANGE BOX. This set is basically the orignal six season sets repackaged. Again I think its best to wait for good prices on the single sets. The packaging is much more convienent.

Like the the first two reviewers, I wondered what the difference between this collection, currently on sale for $109.99, and the "Collector's Edition" on sale for $196.99. But since all I really wanted was to have all the episodes on DVD I went ahead and ordered the cheaper set. When I received it today, I read the back and toward the end of the top paragraph it said:
"Celebrate the show that explores the day-to-day - and night-to-night, world of single women in this, the definitive collector's edition.
With that read, I wanted to see if I really got the "Collector's Edition" so I called my girlfriend who bought her "Collector's Edition" at the regular price of $300 back a few years ago to compare the difference. Good news! Sounds like they're the exact same thing! What I received in my $109.99 set is a pink velvet spiral binder with various color pictures of the ladies and scenes from the show and short summaries of each episode. The DVDs are nicely tucked away, by seasons, in pockets of thicker pages after the summaries. The pink velvet spiral binder comes in a plastic sleeve for protection from scratches, etc. There's no way, however, to see if this DVD set was made in 2007. Everywhere I looked said 2005. Oh well, I'll be happy if all the DVDs work!
If you want to peek at what this set looks like I suggest clicking on the "Collector's Edition" for $196.99 and looking at Picture 4 of 9. It's the picture with the binder (closed and open) with the DVDs nicely scattered in front of it. That is exactly what I received today.

(More customer reviews)On the basis of previous reviews, you'd never know that this series was on the verge of being canceled at least twice, that it never made satisfactory numbers for HBO, or that it was almost universally ignored by award committees despite its fervid following.
There's a number of things for the faint-hearted or first time viewers to know about The Wire before you jump in:
1.There is no denouement, no simple, clear resolution at the end of every episode ala CSI, NCIS, or any other typical police drama. On the contrary, The Wire is the epitome of the "slow build", it takes episodes to get started, much less finished. As in life, there are rarely any easy, clear resolutions at the end. Unlike the black and white worlds of network tv, The Wire is all gray.
2.There is not a simple, single story line. Rather The Wire is characterized by complex, multiple story arcs that can extend over more than one season. It demands (and rewards) concentration, rather than escape. Redemption and revenge are possible, but not in one episode or one season. The Wire requires patience.
3.There are no clear cut heroes and villains (this is the anti-"Heroes" tv show.) There are only human beings, all flawed. McNulty, a hero, is an alcoholic who cheats on his wife. Even Marlowe, the apparently soulless villain, grapples with very human issues of loyalty and pride.
4.Though there are great, fully realized characters (almost too many for escapist viewers to follow), and though to some degree Baltimore, the city, is a central character, the abiding presences in The Wire are Baltimore's institutions and organizations: courts, city government, educational system, labor unions, police, newspapers. Even gangs are seen as just another organization. Unlike any other show I've ever seen, The Wire demonstrates how institutions are built from a complex web of relationships and motivations and seem to have an existence independent of those who participate in them. And it does so in such a subtle way that it's not automatically obvious. It doesn't appear to be about institutions, but it is. That's subtlety.
That's only a start. There's more that makes The Wire a challenge for viewers: it's non-linearity (it's more like a spiral), it's bleak view of cities and urban institutions; the seeming randomness of so many events that impact lives, etc., etc., etc.
All that said, The Wire, for those willing to make the investment of time and attention, is a transcendent, moving experience. However downbeat it's subject matter, it is, in the end, a true work of art, a masterwork, and as such ultimately enobling and uplifting. And just a thrill to watch.

One Foot in the Grave: The Complete Series (2009) Review

(More customer reviews)One Foot In the Grave is one of the most cleverly written and funniest sitcoms you are ever likely to see. The main character Victor Meldrew is an iconic figure in British comedy. While on the surface he seems to be just a grouchy old man he is in fact a very deep thinker who tries his best to do what is right in a world he doesn't generally agree with. Sometimes things go his way but usually the result is disaster. The supporting cast are all brilliant, his neighbors Patrick and Pippa are forever catching him in awkward situations and are convinced he is insane. His feud with Patrick is one of the most hilarious parts of this show.
I don't personally know anyone else who is familiar with this show, I don't think it has ever been shown on PBS in my area although I know it has been show in other parts of the country at some point. One Foot is a show which I believe deserves a huge cult following here in the US if it were just more well known. In a way you could compare it a bit to Seinfeld in that there are usually several storylines in an episode that converge in the end, again usually adding up to disaster for Victor.
There are so many zany, surreal moments in this show that I couldn't start to list them here. My advice is just buy it and see for yourself. If you appreciate British humor you will in no way be disappointed. I might add that the theme song is written and performed by the legendary Eric Idle of Monty Python fame, he also guest stars in one episode.
One word of advice, if you own a multi-region dvd player try amazon.co.uk for the region two version of the box set as it is much, much cheaper than the region one version, this is true of almost all BBC dvds as well.

The grim reaper finally gets to Victor Meldrew. He may not arrive in the form of a strangely-shaped unordered parcel, as a workman with the intellect of an orangutan, or even as Meldrew-fixated ex-neighbor Patrick, but he better be prepared to listen: Victor might have a few complaints to make!

(More customer reviews)I want to preface this review by saying this: I envy each and every person that will forever be able to pick up this set and experience the magic, whimsy, and zanyness of the Gilmore Girls fresh and anew for the first time.
`Gilmore Girls' which ran from 2001-2007 on the WB and CW networks is a show that is simply about a mother and daughter. But it goes so much further than that. This particular mother/daughter combo are best friends and separated in age by a mere 16 years. Yet, more than the interactions between Lorelai and her daughter Rory, typically the zany towns-people are the characters that steal the show. Their incredibly charm, matched with `the Gilmore Girls' wit, all set within the picture-perfect New England town of Stars Hollow, makes "Gilmore Girls" seem almost like a story book fantasy.
The series begins with Lorelai reluctantly starting to rebuild her relationship with her waspy high-society parents, after they agree to fund Rory's private school education. Throughout the seven seasons the audience watches as Lorelai relationship with her parents start to blossom, as well as the bond that forever strengthens between her and her own daughter, Rory. Lorelai was raised as a princess, but always hated her parents for the rules that society put upon her - hence why she ran away from home when she was 16 and pregnant. Throughout the years as well, the audience watches as Rory grows from an innocent and naïve 15-year-old girl, into a mature and seasoned 22-year-old college graduate.
It's impossible to put into words just how magical this show really is. And it is not the perpetual `chick-flick' that many write-it off as. It is infact probably one of the smartest and best written television shows to grace the small-screen in recent years. One would need several PH D.s in Popular Culture to get even 80% of the refrences that these girls throw around. And beyond that the performances of the actors makes this show something special. And, although the show started as a drama, the humor was always present and by the middle of season one the glimpses of the great comedy to come started to make themselves known.
My review my sound like a very proud grand-parent raving about their grandchild, but that shows the love I have for this magical series. I watched from the very first episode at 14 years-old with my best friend until the series finale in my apartment during my sophomore year of college (with the same friend by my side, traveling 700 miles so we could watch it together). I have loved every moment, and will buy this set in a heartbeat.
This DVD set includes all 153 episodes on 42 DVDs in their original full-frame broadcast video with Dolby Surround Sound. (More customer reviews)I just got my house and it's great! Most who are interested in this set probably already know each of the 210 episodes by heart, so I'll describe the packaging. It looks so cute on display. The roof lifts up to reveal the nine cases for each season. They look like minis of the individual season cases with sturdy covers that open up like books. They are set in the house at different heights so they are easy to pull out. Inside there is the episode list and photos like with the individual seasons. The discs are in cardboard sleeves that have a photo of one of the 5 main characters with two quotes. I know a lot of people are concerned about the cardboard sleeves scratching the discs. I will admit, they do fit rather tightly in the sleeves, but each sleeve has a paper backing that seems to protect the disc from scratches. I have not noticed scratches on the ones I've pulled out so far but, I haven't played these discs enough yet to really test it.
What I really like about the box set, besides it being so cute, is that it takes up less room than those big, bulky individual season sets. It takes up a little more than six individual seasons worth, so that frees up a lot of space in my cabinet. The discs have the same extras as the individuals seasons, plus you also get a book with the shooting script for "The Finale." The autographs of the writers are facsimiles on the cover. If the discs hold up (I've heard of disc protectors you can snap on called "D-Skins," but I'm not sure they will fit with this setup) and with the reasonable price you can get this for on Amazon right now, I see no reason to keep those bulky individual sets, so up for sale they go!

(More customer reviews)I totally looked forward to Wednesday nights on SpikeTV for Blade: The Series! It was a fun show which kept true to the Blade movies and even added some fun along the way. With the budget that Spike had to make this series it did a fantastic job! It left me wanting more after every episode! I couldn't believe that it had to be cancelled because it got too expensive for Spike to produce. I wish it got picked up by someone else. The acting was more than adequate, and the special effects and fight scenes were great! I was waiting for the Season release on DVD, and now that it is around the corner I will be purchasing it the day it comes out! All the nay-sayers of this series need to remember that it was a TV show and not a big budget movie. Spike and the directors and writers did a great job with this. It's pretty obvious that it had an audience if it is being released on DVD! BUY IT and enjoy some comic book fun!!
