Tonka Tough Truck Adventures - The Biggest Show on Wheels (2004) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)We too, rented this movie, and my 4 and 5 year old boys absolutely loved the movie. They watched it basically, non-stop, for 5 days!! I enjoy the computer animation style, and it's a little hokey - but for the boys - it's good clean entertainment. I really recommend this if you have young boys.

Down and Dirty with Jim Norton (2009) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I purchased Down and Dirty with Jim Norton thinking it was going to be stand-up with Jim Norton. This DVD is hosted by Jim Norton, but is 4 - 30 minute episodes of stand-up by other comedians. Each episode you see less than 5 minutes of Jim telling jokes, so I was pretty disappointed. If you are an avid collector of Jim Norton stuff, I would say buy this DVD. But if you are looking for some true stand-up of Jim Norton I would say buy his other DVD, "Monster Rain" instead.

HBO premieres a four-part showcase for some of the comedy-club circuits most outrageous R-rated comics, hosted by the foremost practitioner of "cringe comedy" and co-star of the HBO series Lucky Louie Jim Norton. Each half-hour edition features an opening routine from Norton, who then introduces 2-3 comics per show, with each show ending with a top club headliner like Artie Lange, Andrew "Dice" Clay, Bill Burr and Patrice Oneal. The series deejay is Lemmy, beloved by fans of heavy metal as the hard-partying singer/bassist for Motörhead.

Andromeda - Season 3 Collection 4 (2000) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)The Right Horse - Beka endangers the crew of Andromeda and even an entire planet by protecting Able Ladrone, a part love accused of stealing secret DNA. Interesting story with insight into Beka's character with a surprise twist at the end.
What Happens To A Rev Deferred - Dylan and the crew receive a cry from a long lost friend - Rev Bem. Excellent episode dealing with the return of Rev Bem, a tranformation and a hint of Trance's true nature.
Point of the Spear - Dylan and the crew battle the Pyrians to save the planet Samsarra and avoid a galactic war. Excellent action episode with the ebb and flow of battle. Again, a hint of Trance's true nature and the battle to come.
Vault 0f The Heavens - Dylan is beckoned by the voice of a mysterious woman to an icy moon orbiting a giant, fiery planet. Dylan saves an entire race. Strong episode with some interesting science (I'm an armchair reader of physics) behind it.
Deeep Midnight's Voice - Dylan and the crew search for a Nietzchean slip-scout carrying a probe that can map the slipstream - a power that could change the universe. Excellent episode where we see a planet unaware of what is our there and the first hints of Tyr's plans.

'Allo 'Allo - The Complete Series Five, Part 1 (2006) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)The series has had it's ebbs and flows in quality. Season Five, Part One has to be the funniest season so far! I missed the departure of a couple of characters in season three, but the show was back in stride with this season. It is very very funny. The bizarre Herr Flick episodes have be trimmed and changed to make them funnier and less redundant. Jack Haig shines as LeClare and there are some very funny scenes where his schtick is stolen by a couple of the main characters. Marner and Siner shine in this season as well. The newer characters have settled in and add to the fun and enjoyment. I recommend it!

Lexx - The Fourth Series, Part 1 (Vols. 1-3) (2000) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)This is one of the best seasons of Lexx. We all know how outlandish and insane this show is by now. But, there are extremely different tones throughout the series most reviewers fail to realize or even appreciate. The original four movies were a very straightforward Sci-Fi affair. They were unique, but not the best in terms of production. The second season took a Star Trek theme of traveling the galaxies, only to discover that every other living being was recklessly stupid or pointlessly evil, which allowed for enormous amounts of dark humor. The third season on the other hand, was more of a twisted philosophical meditation with religious themes, abandoning the majority of the humor provided in the previous season. By the fourth season, with a thinning budget and news of cancellation, Lexx retreated to the safety of lower production costs by bringing the Lexx crew to Earth.
This is the season where things started to turn even more insane than ever before, and trust me; it's a good thing! The production crew took more risks, was more experimental, and LOADED the show with social commentary. This season had more humor than drama, and it threw a lot of fans off, especially the ones who started watching during the more 3rd season. There are some low points (Mort & Moss), but some of the most memorable episodes come from this season too. Don't miss the first episode "Little Blue Planet" for one of the funniest parables of the United States Presidential Elections ever filmed. In addition, watch Lexx and the crew make the biggest joke out of Texas in "Texx Lexx," the outrageous "Xevivor" parody of the show Survivor, the continuous joke on George Bush in "Bad Carrot" (Don't worry Republicans, the Germans and Canadians just make bodily function jokes at the former US President), a unique interpretation of Dracula in "Vlad," an ugly underbelly of family life and kids in the humorous turning point "Stan Down, "and a lot more! With episodes that promising, how could you go wrong?

Andromeda Season 2 Collection 3 (2000) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)The Editorial Review for this DVD is misleading. The DVD actually contains Season 2, episodes 210 through 214. The Editorial Review alludes to episode 210, "The Prince," but doesn't list it by number. On the copy I got, episodes 210-214 *are* all there.
As for an actual review, if you like Andromeda, and are collecting Andromeda DVDs, this is a must-have. A lot of plotlines pivotal to Season 2 are continued or even completed in this set. I highly recommend it to fans of Andromeda, particularly fans of the first two seasons, where the plot lines were carried over from episode to episode. This is the middle of Season 2, when the show was still getting better and better. For the record, Andromeda has made me a HUGE fan of Keith Hamilton Cobb, who plays Tyr, and I intend to follow his future endeavors closely. What a talent!

Jasper, Texas (2003) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I rented this movie when it first hit the video stores & later wound up purchasing a copy on DVD. It was sickening to watch the scene where James Byrd gets dragged to death by the three racist, young white men. I own a book on the tragedy & the book goes into much greater detail regarding the events which led up to the brutal murder. John King, the ringleader, is believed to have been sexually assaulted by a group of blacks in prison & this supposedly made him a bonafide racist. If that's true it doesn't justify in any way what he did to Mr. Byrd, who was just a random victim. I was jumped by four blacks in 1980 when I was 14 (I'm caucasian) & it was definitely racially motivated. For a number of years afterward I had racist feelings but have long since gotten over them. Racism is WRONG & simply cannot be tolerated. Racism must be fought wherever it is encountered because we are all human beings and all equal in the eyes of God. We should focus on our similarities & not on our differences. The KKK is not nearly as strong as it once was & is fading fast. Getting back to the movie, I thought it was good that they showed many blacks & whites trying to bridge their differences (especially the church communities). When the KKK & Black Panthers came to Jasper to start trouble, the town (blacks & whites) stood up to both groups. It was satisfying to watch those three scumbags get what they deserved. Two got the death penalty & the third got life without parole, I believe. Hopefully this will send a clear message to bigots everywhere that this isn't the 19th century anymore & if they commit these violent, hate crimes they will forfeit their own lives. May James Byrd rest in peace.

This extraordinary true drama, set in the small town of Jasper, TX in1998, explores the aftermath of the horrible death of James Byrd, Jr., the African- American who was dragged to his death by three white men. An outraged nation watchedas the white sheriff, played convincingly by Jon Voight, and the first black mayor ofJasper, played by Louis Gossett, Jr. struggle to maintain control of their town and theirpersonal emotions. Jasper, Texas is a shocking reminder of the racial tension that stillexists today.

Jack Frost (Remastered Deluxe Edition) (2008) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)"Jack Frost" tells the story of how the wintry sprite is transformed by his love for someone very special to him! And the great voice actor Paul Frees (best known as the voice of Boris Badenov in "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle") does an amazing job as the voice of the villain, Kubla Kraus. Don't miss him singing the "Rub-a-Dub" song! (Which is usually cut from TV broadcasts of this film.) "Jack Frost" is another extraordinary film by Romeo Muller, who also wrote the classic Animagic, Rankin/Bass Christmas films, "Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Frosty the Snowman," among many other enchanting tales.

(More customer reviews)PLOT: desperate couples go to Dr. Jacobson known as the "baby maker" who has very good results with infertilty~ reality has him using his own sperm and lying about pregnancy to many women.
Dr. Cecil Jacobson helps many couples looking to get pregnant including a drug called HCG which can create a 'false positive' ~ the Costellanos were told twice they were pregnant including seeing a baby in an ultra sound~ both were lies and manipulation by the Doctor~ at the same time Mary Bennett and her husband go TO DR. Jacobson~ and conceive via artifical insemination have a son~ 5 years later Dr. Jacobson has the STATE of Virginia trying to revoke his medical license due to the lies and also USING HIS OWN SPERM to impregnate women with out their permission or knowledge~ when Mary(Melissa Gilbert) is top notch as the desperate Mary who now shows up to "support" the doctor but finds her son looks like him and a group of children all have the same eye problem~ after a DNA test she finds that Dr. Jacobson fathered over 75 children including her own son~ outraged she makes every effort to have his license revoked~ the Doctor simply went into the restroom and "poof" supplied the sperm without any one being the wiser until DNA tests caught up with his lies~ George Dzunda is excellent as the crooked Doc who feels the women should be "grateful" he used his sperm~ this is based on a real event. well done and well acted~ I GIVE IT 5 OUT OF 5 FOR REAL LIFE EVENT AND GILBERT IS AT HER BEST IN THIS ONE~

Plain Truth (2004) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I happened to come across this movie completely by accident one night while channel-surfing. I have to say that I tend to avoid the Lifetime channel as a rule, but this particular night I came across the beginning of this movie and it looked interesting. So I gave it a chance. Wow, what a surprise! This turned out to be quite an enjoyable movie with tons more depth and intrigue than a typical Lifetime made-for-television movie will offer. In fact I would even rate it among the top movies I've seen recently.
Alison Pill plays a young Amish girl who is arrested on suspicion of killing her newborn child. Normally, the "girl gets arrested for killing her baby" wouldn't make for a very worthwhile movie plot since this topic is nothing new, but having an Amish girl be in the center of it all adds an unusual twist to the movie, one of the things it has going for it. And Alison Pill nails this role; I'm shocked that she has not been in more well-known movies. Her acting talent is obvious from the beginning, not to mention being quite attractive. Equally as good is Mariska Hargitay as the lawyer who represents her in court. And she isn't too hard on the eyes either. I don't mean to harp on about the attractiveness of the 2 women in the lead roles, but hey, it certainly doesn't hurt to have that as a bonus.
But getting back to the merits of the movie, don't let the word "Lifetime" discourage you. Believe me, I've done my fair share of cringing from the painfully-bad movies that Lifetime tends to show. But I can assure you that "Plain Truth" is a welcome change, with some great plot twists (you won't see the final one coming a mile away). Highly recommended!

Masters of Horror: Sounds Like (2006) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)This dark episode plays like more of a TWILIGHT ZONE than most of the other entries, but it's disturbing in its portray of massive grief and man's tendency not to really listen. Chris Bauer stars as Larry Pearce, a supervisor at a software support call in center, whose loss of his young son to heart disease has left him surly, cold and insensitive. Laura Margolis plays his submissive wife who is eager to have a son to replace their loss. Unfortunately, another component of Pearce's grief is his supersensitivity to sound where in any noise is overwhelming, leading him into a gradual maelstrom of madness.
Bauer is quite good in assaying the difficult role, very convincing as he descends into violence and madness. A good entry in the uneven series.

Mad Men: Season One (2007) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)It would be hard to imagine a more absorbingly intelligent American TV series--in terms of writing, acting, and visuals--than MAD MEN. Just before the final season of THE SOPRANOS began in late 2007, AMC presented us in the summer with the thirteen episodes of this marvelously atmospheric series created by one of the main writers of the series, Matt Weiner, that HBO insanely took a pass on. Ostensibly the series is about a group of advertising agency working for Madison Avenue advertising agency, the fictitious Sterling-Cooper, in 1960, during the Nixon-Kennedy presidential contest; yet on a deeper level the show wrestles with much larger questions about the meaning of obsession with having (and marketing) happiness in mid-20th-century America. The series centers primarily around four characters whose lives are inextricably linked with one another: Don Draper (Jon Hamm), a handsome advertising executive at Sterling-Cooper of few words but enormous creative gifts who hides a mysterious past; his beautiful but childlike wife Betty (January Jones), whom he keeps entirely separate in the suburbs from his work life and his mistresses in the city; Peggy Olson (Elisabeth Moss), Don's new secretary, whose naive affect and kind heart belie her tremendous ambition; and Pete Campbell (Vincent Kartheiser), the smarmy account executive who trades on his ties to the Old New York "Knickerbocracy" to get him ahead. The four central actors are absolutely first-rate, as are several within their near orbits: John Slattery as Roger Sterling, the roguish partner who is both Don's friend and his competitor; the gifted Christina Hendricks, as the firm's femme fatale head secretary; and Robert Morse, as the firm's wily and eccentric senior partner.
Morse's presence ties the series to his famous work in both the Broadway and Hollywood production of HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, and the episodes make intelligent reference also to any number of important American fictional works about the NYC business and suburban domestic worlds of the post-War era, including THE APARTMENT and THE BEST OF EVERYTHING. (Richard Yates's REVOLUTIONARY ROAD and the films of Douglas Sirk are also repeatedly evoked too, if in less direct ways.) One of the pleasures of this fine DVD set are the superb extras which allow us to see the especially thoughtful work done by the series' set designers, hairstylists, and (particularly) its head costume designer. The commentaries are generally excellent, and it will come as no surprise to fans of the series that not only the series creator, Matt Weiner, and its writers are especially eloquent but so too are its actors, especially Hamm and Kartheiser. The eye-catching design of this DVD package (fashioned to look and open, naturally, like a classic American manufacturer's product: a Zippo lighter) has been rightly praised for its innovation but also rightly criticized for its unwieldiness.

"Half Moon"

New Order: Live in Glasgow (2008) Review
Average Reviews:
(More customer reviews)I'm endlessly fascinated with New Order. No matter how much you know about them and how many of their live shows you've seen there is always something lurking around the corner of New Order's vast cellar of history. The first concert I ever saw was New Order on their Technique tour back in May of 1989, and, quite frankly, it wasn't very good. They just looked annoyed with each other, and even more annoyed with the crowd. They probably were. Having said that, the second disc of this set is worth the price alone as it spans their most creative and inspiring decade (the 80's). The video of most of the early live stuff is rough and unexciting, but they sound so good it doesn't matter. To see them play tracks like Leave Me Alone, Everything's Gone Green, and Ultraviolence back when they were fresh out of the studio is yet another great and new experience as a New Order fan. They look awkward and apprehensive, but you can sense a palpable focus on the music, and a creative drive burning from their eyes. They look hungry, and it makes one yearn to see them in a intimate setting.
The first disc is ok, the light show is cool, they sound tight, and their bellies have never been more bloated. It sounds good on a loud 5.1 sound system, but honestly it's nothing we haven't seen before. I would love it if the original 80's shows were released in their entirety, regardless of the video quality. New Order have become one of the best bands of the past 25 years, and they deserve to have every one of their moments witnessed and cherished!
